My cousin is a hipster who's always loved the iPhone since it first came out, 4 days ago he picked up the 4s and was bragging about how smooth it was. I showed him that my lumia was smoother and he started swiping back and forth on his screen as fast as he could. Right then, he gripped his phone and it shattered, that might be an understatement, it exploded. It was just a mess. I am an opportunist so at this point I said "something else my phone can do that yours can't." I then pitched my phone and then let it crash to the ground unscathed. He was in awe. I've been letting him play with my titan since and he keeps asking "think I can trade my phone for this?" its amazing how people react once they try WP7.

How hard or in what way was he gripping his iPhone that it shattered? That seems like some incredible brute strength

Either that, orrrrr it's not true in the slightest.
It doesn't take much to break the 4 or 4s. I probably see more people walking around with broken screens than with good ones. The ones with decent screens are often using otterboxes. When a phone's externals are mostly glass it's not hard to break.

Yup, my mates sons both hav iPhone 4 and both have shattered/ cracked backplanes and one has a chip in the glass on the front, should be said, they are both early 20's and party a lot and the phones are about 6 months old.
you can smash an iPhone 4 by looking at it the wrong way..

Without joking I also know some people who have a broken iphone screen because the phone only fell out of the pocket. So I always show them my OMNIA 7 where I never have put a screen protector. After 1 year of using the screen is still non-scratched...
Windows phone 7 is kinda awful though. I owned an HD7 for a couple weeks and it got old quick. The animations were annoying, I missed Google Apps (turn by turn nav was sweet!), really not interested in social networking, and the app selection is terrible. Also, I loved experimenting with all the roms that were available for Android.
If there is something that apple does right is, iTunes has a huge music selection, great app store, super smooth gaming performance, and great developers all around, and amazing responsiveness. Course, if he wants to trade a 4S for a Lumnia then I have a spare laying around here, tell him to call me up

to each their own, I just came from android and aside from games this phone is a much better experience.
It doesn't feel like it's shoddily pieced together by 100 random people, it is coherent and smooth.

Yep, would hate to have pro-Android sentiments on XDA, god forbid!
Anyway, When I was talking about iTunes I meant their music selection and the content, I do agree that iTunes is a terrible piece of software though! One of the big reasons I stopped using them.
it doesnt matter how many times an iphone user will drop his phone break than buy a new one. They will still buy an iphone again so it will take a LONG time till we will be able to break the isouls but with android i have converted quite a few people.
The weirdest people on the planet are the people who want to convert you to their preferred mobile operating system. I don't even know what I would do if someone tried to convert me by dropping their phone on the floor - run away screaming, perhaps.
I have an iPhone and a Samsung Focus S. If I drop either one of them, they'll break. Near as I can tell, Apple, Microsoft and even Google have yet to defeat gravity with their current offerings.

Having dropped my HTC 7 Pro a good few times now, the sum total of damage are a couple of paintchips, and the h on the back has gone missing. In summary, the same as my HTC Legend.
It isn't difficult to make a phone that can survive being dropped. The iPhone 4/4s is just incredibly fragile. I have made a small fortune out of replacing the glass on my friends shattered iPhones - HTC have made a few quid too.

I dropped my HTC 7 Mozart on purpose a couple of times to demonstrate how solid it is. It has a few scuffs on the metal case, but the screen remains flawless and the device itself works fine. The only issue I had when dropping the phone was the fact that the battery cover flew off every time and the battery slid out
Awesome story!!!

2 weeks and is broken!
I had this thing for not more that 2 weeks and the speaker is broken
T-mobile is sending replacement tomorrow, but this is disappointing from HTC
Only this time i will put screen protector from day one.... the screen is not exactly scratch resistant.
If we add the battery performance andddd this is not exactly Desire
How'd you break it?
I work in mobile sales and deal with people like you on a daily basis, "i've only had it 2 weeks and its all scratched/part A broken/ its really slow/ battery life rubbish" I have had my desire for nearly 2 months with no scratches, the screen is as scratch resistant as most touch devices - as in don't stick it somewhere its gonna get scratched- pockets with keys - and you'll be fine. Try and remember how much these devices cost and treat them with respect. If your unfamiliar with Android/smartphones/computers then don't complain if it doesn't work as you'd expect as you have no knowledge or experience to base it on and have more than likely done something wrong, lastly battery life on all touch devices is poor when compared to older mobiles - WE ALL KNOW THIS BY NOW!! - learn how to use power management features and apps such as juice defender, be aware that lithium ion battery life will improve within the first month if used properly and finally if you don't know these things then USE GOOGLE FFS!! It's all scratched up and broken after only two weeks? Unless you work in construction or something you REALLY need to learn how to treat your devices or stick to something more play school. It's an expensive high tech device, it's not a rubber coated brick. It's a small computer with a 3.7 inch GLASS screen... learn how to treat it.

This.
People are the same with laptops.. just because its portable it doesn't mean its not a fragile bit of modern tech.
Did I miss something in HTC's advertising? Where does it say its scratch resistant?
And you have had it 2 weeks, the battery should only just be starting to reach its peak performance.
I don't wish to appear cynical but all your statements point to the fact that you don't look after your phone and have limited knowledge about it, I'm not surprised your speaker has broken. Count yourself really lucky HTC are giving you a second chance.
Lol.. lucky their speaker broke, that sounds like a genuine fault.
I have to admit I think the speaker is of bad quality. Bloody built in obsolescence imo
Lucky you are getting a replacement.
Mine has dust under the screen, this is not something I could have done myself, not that amount of dust in that specific place after 2 weeks (I've had the phone longer but it's been there for 2 weeks).
T-Mobile wont do anything, even though the Nexus One has the same issue.

Agreed to all.
I have had iPhones, HTC HD2, Hero etc and never scratched one of them. I don't use screen protectors or cases, I don't need them as I put the phones in my pocket without my keys in that pocket. My left one is for my phone, my right for everything else.
Unless you have had a dodgy unit that is made of plastic, I'd have to say its probably down to how you are storing it!
Good luck with your second one
Hmm interesting replies...
I was driving from work and my sat nav suddenly went muted ant that’s it. When i shake the device the speaker works on and off... so for me this is dodgy speaker
About the scratches... Its only one tiny scratch caused by my PLASTIC button on my pocket ...
Could be anything, a bit of sand in your pocket and you're screen is full of scratches. Pouch and screen protector all the way! Or pay around 400 euro's (directly or indirectly) and don't care what happens to those 400 euro's.
Anyway, there are always devices that can have some problems like a broken speaker or something.
Try reading a forum about whatever device, and there are always the same 'stories' like yours. Maybe it's because we're promised perfection which is impossible. But perhaps it's we all want to have perfection and don't know that's impossible anymore. But! There is a reason warranty exists... sometimes things break. No matter what product.
Does anyone else notice that the front camera is off. Turn the front facing camera on, do you notice you have to hold your phone off centered just to get your face in the middle?
yeah, i find that kinda annoying as well. poor design choice especially for face unlock.
You make it sound that its hugely off centered
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I would rather they centered the camera above the screen and located the ear speaker off to the side. Then I could look like the world's biggest dork when making a call.
I just tried this for the first time....I'm convinced people like searching for things to annoy them. I had to hold the phone at the ever so slightest angle if I wanted my face perfectly aligned, even if I didn't it wasn't like I was that far off center.
This forum is funny, though it's no different than the iPhone forums. They do the same **** over there, literally dig for things to complain about. Just an observation as an iPhone and Android user.
Is therea phone with center from cam? Most if not all front cams are located off center.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I find this quite annoying too. How hard is it to get the camera to point straight ahead?!
My iPhone 4 camera is off center, but it centers the face fine. Again, still not a big deal to me as the Nexus isn't that far off center. It works just fine for me and I have another phone that is perfectly centered and it still doesn't bother me.
This drives me crazy too. I thought it to be a manufacturing defect, and will still look into it with Google and Samsung. Don't really understand how they couldn't angle the camera inside the body slightly so that it looks at you when its right in front of you. Just seems weird to point the phone down and to the left a bit to get my face in there, or at my neck when I'm holding it horizontally.
Wow, really? People will find ANYTHING to complain about.
"OH NOEZ!!1 I HAZ TO MOVE DA FONE A BIT TO BE CENTERED!1!1"
Please.

Well then concentrate on your studying and your girlfriend rather than on the angle of a front facing camera on a phone.
Seriously, just enjoy your life and don't worry about the camera.
Turning the phone at a slight angle isn't that big of a deal.

I am a major techie and love to have the newest and greatest like all of you out there . I have one major concern that is holding me back from saying that this is definitely going to be my next phone over the galaxy s III and that is when you are actually talking on the phone is it uncomfortable and awkward to hold up to your ear for a 30-60 minute conversation? I have bigger hands so I am not worried with texting, web browsing, etc....just worried that the phone is slightly over the perfect size to hold to your ear.
Thanks for your opinions!

I think it's quite nice, to be honest.
I haven't heard one person ever say it's uncomfortable holding up to your ear.
People forget how big home cordless phones/cell phones used to be a couple of years ago.

Mostly use a headset on all my phones including the note 1. But when i do make a in hand call from time to time, I've haven't found its size to be a problem. The payoff of the note 1/note 2 size format for me is for surfing and online reading..... Perfect small paperback size.... I haven't used my tablet since i bought it. If it was much smaller it would lose a large chunk of functionality for me. I don't even think of it as a phone anymore. As with anything it depends on how you use it, but it was at least 3 weeks before i realized how effective the format size was. Now im totally addicted.

Better yet most other phones now seem extremely small. Friend of mine has an iPhone 4s and I realized last night how much smaller the screen really is. I feel spoiled now and and do not feel like I would want to go back to a smaller phone. I use this thing as my Netflix device all the time too simply because of the enormous screen size. Truly a phone of its own kind in the marketplace today. Even better it's already picking up steam with support. I am now running the cmenard ROM with multi-window functionality among all the apps. Buttery smooth and battery life is awesome as expected. Sorry, just expressing my happiness with this phone. I paid full price like most everyone else but I feel it is totally worth it!! :good:
i noticed that too after about a week of having it. when i had a vibrant the sgs 2 and 3 seemed huge compared to it, but after having the note 2 you are completely right that it feels like a normal sized phone and just makes others seem overly small in comparison.
It's funny you say that cause when I first got it I was thinking about taking it back cause I thought it was too big. But now when I hold an S3 or something similar, which I thought was the perfect size now feels so small. Go figure. Next step I'll be holding a Nexus 7 to my ear. Lol.

I've been saying the same thing myself. The Note II feels normal to me now and every other phone seems tiny. I don't think I could go back to a smaller phone at this point honestly.
I do also like that the Note II is still somewhat slim in the width and (to me) shaped like a phone. The Note I looks a bit wider and more like a small tablet to me.
I ended up in a few Apple stores last week during a business trip to DC. In each store, my friend and I asked an Apple Genius to take our picture next to the iPhone 5. Both of the genius' were happy to snap the pics. My buddy and I both held our Note 2s next to the iPhone 5 and smiled... and watched the Genius grumble as he snapped the pic. *snicker*
Just wanna jump on the bandwagon and say that after playing with my Note 2 for a couple of week it now feels natural. The other day I went to open the casket of my GS 4G and I thought that the phone shrank, but it was actually still the same size as it was before. Haha! There is now way I'm going back to anything that is below 5.5.
Hell yea. I'll contribute. All I've ever had are relatively big phones. It started with the Motorola Droid. That was big for it's time. Then the Droid x which everyone knows was one of the first 4.3 inches of android. Then the galaxy nexus which I thought was big as hell opening the box. But now the note 2 is the biggest jump yet. 5.5 inches is a night and day difference to anything out there. I honestly feel like it's perfection. Watching movies, Playing 3d games, Drawing pictures, Browsing the web, and anything else is so much better on this phone. When the note 3 comes out I'm dropping 700 easy on the damn thing

I can agree. Went from my Moto Photon to this and now it seems small. I compared it to my Samsung moment which was my first android device and I can't even use the screen on it anymore because it's so tiny.
my phone (with a spigen hard case) fall to ground first time, the screen is fine, but I can't power on it anymore...
sent it to LG service, said need 3 days to check what's wrong..
my Nexus 5 fall to ground many times, and working well. and Nexus 5x just one... LG quality now is really bad.
Well, LG might say that user handling of devices nowadays it's very bad.
Hard cases suck for drops. They accept the drop instead of deflecting it like softer ones do. Just my opinion, buy a better case

You don't think anyone dropped their Nexus 5 and it broke too? It's just luck if it breaks or not, as with any phone in a drop.
My 5x fell onto tiled floor with no case or screen protector. Barely even a scuff on two of the corners. Good job LG!
BTW you shouldn't expect a case to help in a drop when it's not designed to help in a drop, isn't advertised to help in a drop, nor was it ever publicly tested in drop tests.
If a case doesn't have these things then it is for scratch protection, minor bumps, and aesthetics only. Don't be fooled by empty marketing promises. It's easy for any case or SP to type some words on their JPEGs "super resilient, shock and explosion proof, 9H hardness" but that doesn't mean it's true or was ever actually tested. They just want your money.
Couldn't the thread have been titled, "First unlucky drop and no power.." or something like that. Ya just gotta throw in the dig of "bad quality LG" as if it's their fault you dropped the phone. I just don't get all these threads that don't really ask questions so much as to get eyeballs on a negative depiction of a very capable phone. And I'm just as guilty, I read this crap.
Me too Bobby. I keep feeding the trolls. I can't help it. I feel bad for them.
Thing is it was happening in the 6P threads too. I had one for about a week until I realized it was just too large a device for me and I was definitely going to drop and break it due to the size and slippery back. "Super lag on the 6P", "awful camera", speakers terrible" things like that just the same as here. Some of them just Sammy fans and some iPhone heads but they came out of the woodwork. And same here, "5X-Hugely disappointed" over 45k views. I mean who goes on just to post something like that instead of taking the time to return the device and research another one? It just makes me wonder motivation.
Back on topic, I dropped my phone once and not a scratch. It was on the carpet, does that count?
The only thing lacking quality in this situation is your grip.
Mine survived a 4 foot drop to concrete.

Me three.
I have to say -- I always try to assume the best in terms of motivation, and just chalk up someone's different experience to use case, app selection, etc. But my 5X is so fast, and multitasks so well, that I have to question motivation as well.
today LG called me ... said the mainboard damaged....
change a new mainboard is expensive, so I 'd better to buy a new one

That, I'm sorry to hear. Somehow in this day and age they can make a phone almost indestructible. At least from a toilet drop and 5 feet onto cement.
my 5 fell into the grand canyon, I wonder if the screen broke. still rang but no one answered. sad. love my new 5X
