December Update Confirmed by top Samsung dev - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

TL'DR - A sprint executive told me there is an update in the final stages with a December release to fix LoS
Full story:
I have been having problems since I bought this phone with LoS and had been having bad customer service to the extreme which I won't go into here.
A couple of days ago I did an executive email bomb (not the [email protected] address, but their actual email addresses). Bob Johnson, the customer service top guy at Sprint personally called to apologize to me at 9pm at night. After I explained the issue, he said he would research the issue and get back to me. A top Samsung dev called me today who said he had spoke to Bob and informed me that an update was due in December. He offered to push the update to my phone now but said it was still in testing, so I declined.
He explained the cause of the issue to me. It is isolated to areas with spotty coverage, which is why some don't experience it at all. If you are in 4g and leave 4g coverage, or in 3g coverage and leave 3g coverage, and in the process of sending packets, there is apparently a bug where the phone does not detect this and would just give up after it could no longer talk to the old tower.

Sounds good but I don't expect much unless they officially state that.
EDIT: I retract my above statement.
Thanks OP.

Sounds realistic to me thanks for posting.

December is just a few days away now...
Hopefully this rings true.

Lol he literally was willing to push the update to me that moment. I only declined because he emphasized it was still in testing and could make things worse, phone too critical to risk that.

you could have accepted, pushed the new update, make a dump (for the devs) and revert back to your old nandroid? lol
though when i read the title i thought this was about ics. lol

I considered that and am still considering calling him back Monday and telling him to go ahead and send it, but I am not an android dev, dont know what this update will break as far as root and recovery especially since it is an internal samsung build, and not sure I want to risk that when December is like a week away.

You're looking at this from the wrong perspective. You have the opportunity to provide the community with everything they would need to fix LoS and you're only worried about what it will mess up on your phone. After receiving, packaging and uploading the update, you can easily just Odin back to what you're on now until our developers can modify, test and compile. Ask any of the developers how to upload an OTA after you receive it.

I will call back Monday and see if the offer still stands. Of course there is always a chance he uses xda which would suck.

Most techs us xda.....especially htc crew.
XDA has played a big part in their success which is why my avatar is so jolly. They tried to pull fast one locking down 3D boot loader giving us the middle finger.

I would jump on the offer to test the fix. It would be great to have someone from the community actually help test the fix, even if you don't feel comfortable sharing whatever is pushed to your device.

Forgot to mention, he did say they originally intended to release the LoS update this month, but some other bugs were discovered so they just wanted to do a single maintenance release in December instead. Don't know of the bug you mentioned is one of them.

the update was never supposed to come out in November - refer to link above!

A dev in irc #epic mentioned LoS was due to tower switch also.

it's interesting that when xda members don't like the content of a post they get sad and try to discredit the information. All the information in this post was given to xda in October. I went through the hassle of calling Samsung and Sprint and brought xda the same information here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313705 - but I guess because it was October and December was so far away, people didn't want to believe it.
Now its close to December and the information is much more palatable to the members so everyone quickly accepts the information as fact and everything is just peachy.
Maybe the membership should treat other members with enough respect to give them the benefit of the doubt on information that is provide. Bringing BS info to the forums would not benefit me in anyway and the reception of such information with the "that's BS" mentality only makes it less likely for members to contribute openly due to the expectation of facing criticism.
Either way, thank you Kingsway8605 and please excuse my interruption of your thread!
Glad to be re insured the update is still on its way unlike my Logitech revue update!

I just know what I was told by a reliable person. I can guarantee the person in the link was not dealing with someone as high up, and the thread was started in late october, so it is possible there was a different timetable before that. If you want to doubt it, that if fine, but I trust the person capable of pushing me the update more than the tech support person mentioned in the linked thread.

I made the post and I don't doubt you are right. You missed the point - what I posted in October is the same information you just posted. I am agreeing with you and saying that this information was also posted in October!

That means ICS will drop next summer on this phone if they've taken this long for the LOS fix.

[Q] 8/1 Froyo Update?

Sorry if this has been addressed in another thread. I didn't see one dedicated to it and it's a hard thing to search.
So the update is available again today, Sunday 8/1. Does anyone know if it's still the 3.26.651.3 release? I installed one of the rooted ROMs and just wanted to know if I need to worry about updating again (to a newer rooted ROM) due to a newer official version.
Thanks!
So, official OTA is live? This is new.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Also, running one of the current ROMs means that you should plan to update. All of them have some kinks. They're very fresh.

I did a manual HTC software update on my wife's unrooted Evo at about 8PM (pacific) and got a message saying an update was available.
I haven't installed it, but I did download it. Can anyone tell me where it's saved to?
Dare yea to take the update then tell us if you are still rooted.

Wait. So you installed the unrooted update, then got a notification that an update is ready on the same phone? Should be safe, just make sure the version numbers are different.
EDIT: Think you can copy it off the phone and post it somewhere?

No, sorry for the confusion. I have two phones; my rooted Evo and my wife's unrooted Evo. I installed the rooted ROM on my phone. I was curious on Sunday to see if the "official" update was available for manual updaters, as some sources had suggested, so I did a manual HTC software update on my wife's stock 2.1 unrooted phone. I was offered an update for the new 3.whatever/1.47whatever update (I don't have it in front of me)
I'd be happy to upload it, but I'm not sure where's it's stored. It didn't seem to be in the SD card's root, or under downloads. does anyone know where it would be?
HTC's twitter had something to say about an hour ago:
http://twitter.com/HTC
Why "trolling?"
I'd really like to know why someone tagged this with "trolling." What did I do that you'd call me a troll? All I did was ask a simple question about the update I got on my phone on Sunday.
I have to say, while not the most unfriendly place I've ever visited, it's pretty ****ing close. You guys are constantly at each other's throats and constantly insulting each other. I've never seen the word "troll" used as much as I have here. I've never seen so much ridicule and flaming over nothing.
Some people are actually pissed off (and actually insulting people!) because some other users dared say they weren't impressed with Froyo. Are you ****ing serious? Really? That bothers you? Holy ****; you really need to get a life. Others were actually put off by the idea of starting an "off-topic" thread in the Evo group! Talk about not having enough to worry about! I've seen a poster called a fanboy and a troll because he simply mentioned CM6. It seems like everyone who dares make a positive statement about a ROM is automatically a fanboy troll.
It seems like anytime a person other than a developer starts a thread, someone has to say something insulting about the user or impinge their motive behind starting it. I fully expected someone to make a negative comment concerning me starting this thread -- I just didn't realize you'd be such a ***** that you'd have to hide behind tagging it.
The developers seem like decent people, but a lot of you hangers-on are just a bunch of immature, self-important, assholes who seem to feel a need to insult others and their choices in order to feel better about yourself and the choices you've made.
I'm sure this will be considered trolling, but since everything anyone does is labeled as such, it's sort of lost its meaning
We used to have a rule that the first person to bring up Hitler, Nazis, or the 3rd Reich in an argument automatically lost -- it's a mark of a weak intellect and a dearth of ideas. I think the same needs to be said about you idiots who trot out "troll" on every thread. I've been here a month and it's already gotten old.
New people are not going to stick around if you treat them like this.

if you check for updates again can you right down, and post here he name of the update they list?
i do not recall if it gives a file name or revision number.
otherwise you might have to do it on your phone and then use root explorer or something to find the file.
i do not know if it is downloaded as "update.zip" or not.
you can also offer to upload it to one of the many hosting sites that are used here and one of the dev's cna look at it to see if its different than the one from last week.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I thought this was a place for learning, but I don't understand how anyone can learn something when they obviously feel they know everything already.
All I want to know is: how do I find out if this is the same version as the one that came out Thursday or Friday, which I believe was 3.26.651.3? I tried to find it on the SD card, but I can't.

Woo! More unsubstantiated rumors.
With each failed attempt at guessing a release date, our chances of being correct on the next guess improve, right guys? Guys?
So EA17 means that it was completed on the 17th of January. So either they are clueless how to release this OTA without bricking devices or they are really testing the **** out of this one then. I hope its the latter case.
I feel like Charlie Brown going to kick the football. Surely Lucy won't pull it away again this time...
I think this one will actually be the one, theres already proof with that picture. Now Now, I know that it can be edited, but still, it seems like this date will be the one we were actually waiting for.
I just don't get it.
EA17... so it's already done.
It's not out because it's being tested.
So why is there a release date?
- If they know it's fine, it should be out already.
- If they expect it to fail, then how do they know it will be ready by a certain date?
If I had my way a lot would be different... but I don't understand how/why the final release will not be a build dated maybe a week before the actual release date, a date we will not know until it happens.

It makes perfect sense. They are going to test whatever they release for a while to make sure its polished. The rumor that AC received was probably that IF they dont find any major bugs in this version, it will be released on the 21st.
If they are so sure it's fine, they should release it now...
And if they DO find an issue, they'll disappoint everyone AGAIN.
This is nothing more than predicting the future, and they've been doing it poorly for 6mos now, why does Sprint think they'll get it right this time?
Releasing it at such-and-such date assuming all's well is what they have been doing since August.

Sprint isn't leaking the rumors. It's individuals that work for Sprint who want to give us an idea of when we might expect it (then they find some bugs)... or just douchebags that want to throw out rumors for laughs. Again, Sprint doesn't say when they are releasing updates because that makes them look worse if it's buggy or they don't follow through.

I am running 2.2, it has some issues, but works remarkably well. No FC's, and only slight screen rotation lag. So I can wait for Froyo... I am willing to wait because I want them to fix any and all bugs... Whether that be GPS, keyboard misses, screen rotation, whatever..
I am not a Sprint Lacky, have no stock in the company, but how people can get so emotionally attached to a software upgrade is beyond me. I can only imagine what people will be saying if they released a rushed buggy version.
Those of us that flashed the FroYo DK28 will still get this OTA if/when it comes out, right?

I'd be happy with a new leak that's better than DK28 instead of "release dates" for froyo.

Not exactly. You will have to flash stock DI18 for the OTA to come through and install. But I recommend waiting for our dev teams to get hold of it first to tweak it.

Posting what Koush said from G+

For the people that are not on G+ or follow a few of the cyanogenmod team members that are on it I wanted to repost what Koush said about an hour ago. I know people are waiting for CM7 on the E4GT but at the same time pestering the dev's is not going to get us anywhere and in turn could get them upset.
Epic 4G Touch Users: The devices were donated to us by RootzWiki, with absolutely no strings or expectations attached. Please stop asking for ETAs, it's extremely irritating and pretty disheartening.
Regardless, for those asking about Epic 4G Touch, here's what has been done with it so far:
The first official template/guide for building Samsung recoveries, specifically tested on Epic 4G Touch:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8296-gui...rkmod-recovery-into-samsunginitramfs-devices/
It also helped add external/internal sd card support in CWR and RM:

https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/89ed0b7355e93c145bb40483db5f79766a00e7df
You may not appreciate it, since it doesn't get you CM7 immediately. But this is the kind of work that streamlines the process for future Samsung devices getting properly supported and mainlined.

The fact that Samsung can't even get off their ass to fix such a serious problem like LOS much less update their phones definitely makes people antsy about getting AOSP (which also helps bring other development)
Thanks for the update! I really need to follow them on Google+
Koush is the man! Noobs....let him be.
For what its worth I don't think the hangup is Samsung and lies more in the hands of Sprint who apparently have had a Samsung update submission and haven't done anything with it...for various reasons given I don't understand.
In addition to Samsung stepping up their game since the Samsung S's releases (namely beginning with SGS2 they also tried to counter their poor update record.
During the time I had the SGS2 from April through July we had THREE Samsung updates...coming fairly quickly after known issues.
The carrier here is the roadblock.
Lesson? Get the Nexus Prime.

The problem with the idea that Sprint is holding up the updates is three fold:
1) Why would Sprint hold up the LOS fix? They're losing money on constant credits and device exchanges.
2) Samsung has a history, no matter what carrier, of not being anywhere near prompt with updates.
3) Also, why would Sprint hold up updates for only Samsung devices? Other device makers don't seem to have issues.
I think the fact is, Samsung sees the international market as more important than the U.S., and is even less concerned with the CDMA market.
I am so exited! Got my phone and stock drove me CRAZY within a few hours. The folks at CM seriously spoil us. We are so lucky to have them. I don't know why the small group of geniuses at CM can develop a ROM that is AWESOME and the stock ROMs suck so bad. I mean, she wouldn't anyone want to know what their battery percentage is, or have options for their dock and lock screen style, or not throw their battery and performance in the dumpster!
Not only does CM put out awesome ROMs in a timely manner, they do it across like twenty devices and eight manufacturers for free! ! ! Friggin miraculous. Anyway, thank you! Let's not be impatient because the miracle takes a couple weeks longer than convenient.

Hey Nifnard,
How would I know his actual handle?
I know how to search in G+ and when I searched for Koush a log of profiles came up. I bet you were giggling like a little school girl when you were posting.
People on this website are full of themselves. I miss the old XDA.

Google is a verb. So true. All my friends and family members probably think I'm an asshole because I google everything on my "google phone" to prove everyone is wrong. Sadly I prove myself wrong too at rare occasions.

Sprint reply to my email re: E4GT ICS issues

Sent an email to Sprint explaining my issues with battery life after ICS update. Here is the response I got. Just thought I would share
Thank you for contacting Sprint. I apologize for the inconvenience that
you have experienced with your phone.
There is no known issue related to the Software upgrade to Ice Cream
Sandwich on Samsung Galaxy SII handset.
Please visit your nearest Sprint Repair Center for assistance and ask
them to perform a diagnostic test on your phone.
To shorten your wait time at one of our stores, you can make an
appointment online or over the phone. It's easy to find a Sprint store
that is convenient for you; simply visit sprintstorelocator.com.
Alternatively, please call Sprint Technical Support at 1-888-211-4727
and follow the prompts for technical assistance. To enable testing, it
is important you call us from a phone other than the Sprint phone you
are having trouble with.
Please reply to this email or visit sprint.com if we can be of
assistance.
Sincerely,
Julie K.
Sprint
not trying to be rude but if you are on stock ics and you are having bad battery life you should probably look at your battery. Don't expect to get over a day with these phones, but stock Ics is pretty good on battery life.
I'm sorry but there is no way in hell that sprint does not know what is going on. They do know what is going on period. One good look at their forums over at sprint says so.
That email you go back looks like a standard form letter ( email ) that they just push out to get you off their backs.
Those emails are automated.
They scan for key-word phrases, and automatically respond with pre-set emails.
I can guarantee no person at Sprint read it.
They don't even copy and paste anymore, just a script that responds!
Are you sure its ICS and not some rogue program you installed?
I would suggest a hard reset and leave the phone stock (IE - not install any apps) for 24-48 hours and see if you still have battery issues.
Or it could very well be your actual battery....
I do know of one issue I have seen with a few ROMs and kernels. There is a issue where if you have the notification light enabled and you get a notification then it keeps the phone from entering deep sleep. Now I will say this issue didn't seem present on stock FF18. If you're not running a stock kernel I suggest flashing Chris41Gs stock SAFE kernel. It doesn't seem to be plagued by this bug. Just something I've noticed and thought I would share.

You're not alone. There are a bunch of us having issues with the released ICS. I'm probably going to revert to Caulkin's EL29. That was the best I've had so far. I've talked to sprint and they don't seem to care too terribly much. Initially they claimed a network outage for my connection issues, but when I told them it's everywhere I go the rep didn't have much else to say. It seems that they released ICS without really testing, which is frustrating. This is as much Google and Samsung's faults as Sprints.

I think its mostly Samsung and sprint fault Google has no fault in this update and of course sprint reps and techs not going to care cuz there's nothing they could do plus I'm pretty sure they hoping for Samsung to hurry up with that patch so people would stop calling them and complaining about the failure of the ics update.
Its funny cuz everyone wanted ics people here in xda well for this device was impatient and was rushing Samsung for the update which now everyone is hating it for having issues lol well this is what you get, me on the other hand I could careless for the ota because source was the major big deal once I read that ota and the leaks where the same their wasn't no reason for me to take the ota update then since there's really no difference heck I Odin back to el29 got on caulks 3.0 gb rom and I'm going to stay there till the devs finish compiling or doing what ever it is that they do with source kernel, once its ready and ics roms are better and much more stable with kernel source that's when ill go back to ics I think that's the best idea to do but I know that's kinda hard for some of you flashaholics out there.

Your not being a **** at all its just basically the truth there's folks out here that act like little kids and are impatient to received there candy and mind you the devs that are working real hard shares and make these candies for free, heck I'm a flashaholic myself but I have other hobbies besides flashing that could keep me entertain that's what some of these folks here need if you check the dev forums you'll see so much useless post referring (omg I can't wait for the next update, or omg freaking awesome there's a from update thanks alot I'm downloading now) like if the devs doesn't know that your going to download it I mean yea its good to give your respect and good comments and such but I think instead of cluttering the dev forums with useless non info about issues the bad and the good about the rom just hit the thanks button for these incredible devs.
Geez sorry I just had to rant cuz idk how these mods and devs can handle it

LOL, wow, apparently opened a can of worms here. The point of my post was merely to let other xda users know that I contacted sprint and they told me there is no known issue with the ICS update on the E4GT.
Love you all

You do realize there were 3 weeks without an RDF? Sprint couldn't take that into thought to make bug fixes? There's plenty of time for us to wait.

I guarantee most people problems will be fixed if they did a clean install. Not many people were *****ing when it was just a leak. When i was running FF18, battery was as good as GB. I got 5+ hours of display time.
I had great battery life on most if not all of leaks. The difference was, I almost always did clean installs. I'd bet the battery issues are related to old GB app data not playing nice on the ICS base, which is why most that have done a factory reset after upgrading to ICS have seen their battery life improve.

couldn't agree more... additionally to vent a little since this seems like a good post to do it in I'm getting really tired constant onslaught of "bug" posts about the stock ics ota... most of them are specific to the user and not an actually bug ( ie "this isnt exactlly the same as it was in gingerbread im anggggry" ) and it doesn't seem to be appropriate for xda... take that sort of stuff to the sprintusers forums, the devs here are not going to be patching the stock ota for you. If you find an actual bug in a dev's rom please use the dev thread to report it, the dev will thank you, and believe it or not this is the actual point of the dev threads, despite what the thousands of posts saying "omg rom update thanx you!!!1!1 flashing now" would lead you to believe ( use the damn thanks button as opposed to cluttering up the dev thread, that's why its there)....ugh, this place would be a lot better if people would learn to use the damn search bar as well, as its not super fun to see the same questions in thread after thread.... also get off my lawn... /end rant

That's the number one thing that annoys me just seeing the same questions after post after post for example look at Chris 41 new thread for his new kernel in the op it states everything you need to know I mean everything and yet folks still tend to ask I feel like if your not going to read then don't flash at all cuz the dev do what they can and post all the info that is needed so folks won't have to clutter the dev forums with the same questions over and over but it seems like folks these days are to lazy to read or are just straight up dumb.

I have stock (completelly stock) EL29 Samsung epic touch 4g and I updated via a sprint update (legal) and my phone reboots constantly and battery life is not that good. I know is not the battery because prior to that I went all day with one charge.
use stock mail, text, phone and contacts the only program not stock is the go launcher.
So I think a clean install might not be the solution.
Hehehe i hope nobody read my pre coffe nerd rage.
Sorry, all!

Any Movement or Update on S-OFF to Root Verizon M9?

I am sure it is a hugely difficult task, and maybe with little financial reward as a result of the small amount of people who have Verizon and and M9, but is there any movement or update on this? I remember seeing when I first got it that it would take some time but would eventually happen.

Still stands the same. You have to have java card\clip to s-off which then will allow root. Currently no software method\sunshine available, but as we all know, that could change tomorrow or never.

That's what I feared; I thought I remembered the developer of the software roamed these forums, so maybe he would see it and be slightly more motivated
You could always nonchalantly mention him like this @jcase if you wanted to be real sly about it... Lol

You might be better served to just go the route every one else has and ship/drive to a dev with access. I wouldnt hedge my bets on getting software exploit going anytime soon. But my sentiment will ring the same with everyone else.... This phone is infinitely better with root

This.
Well worth it. With the incredibly successful sales of the M9 (not), I wouldn't hold my breath for devs to continue to focus on the M9, especially as it becomes the "old" handset when HTC releases its next flagship.
Why my post get deleted? I was offering free s off all htc models all android versions ! What's wrong with that ????
Maybe someone thought o no ... I can't have a alternative s off for free I lose my 25 bucks lol . Why not give the people a option! !!!

I offer free local s off service that I say AGAIN is free . also doesn't void warranty and I can do all htc models and android version
Neo has consolidated all users doing the same exact service in the Java card/clip thread.
That's why. You are on the thread there now. Perhaps you are in denial that there are many users already doing this and more in that thread? Even boot loader unlocks without warranty voiding?
So yes please...stop duplicating posts everywhere.
