Stock Samsung charger query? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The standard charger lead isn't long enough for my needs. I have a 1m USB extension lead, will this affect anything or should it perform the same if I extend the stock lead? What I am most concerned about is will it still have over charge protection or will the 1m a USB extension affect this somehow?
Also? I connected to my PC via USB and it started charging but much slower than mains, should that be the case?
Thanks.

Standard mini usb and usb doesn't provide the same power that the mains can, therefore doesn't charge the phone as quick.

What I meant was wall charger to USB extension to Samsung USB/micro USB charger lead to phone. Anyway, works perfectly. Will just keep checking to make sure it stops charging at 100% and doesn't blow up!

USB port pn your computer is only 500mA and your regular wall charger is around 700-1000mA (1A)

Uhm, it's micro-USB. I'm sure you knew that but just want to make sure someone doesnt't read this thread and then buy the incorrect cable.

The overcharge protection and all charging/battery logic is handled by the phone. The charger just provides power. This is true for pretty much all phones and similar devices charging over USB released in the last few years.

Charging Cable Recommendation

I would like a longer cable that will also allow charging from computer USB, car charger USB port, etc...
Basically I don't want to be limited to having to have that brick of a Samsung wall charger with me, and of course the longer cable.
Can anyone recommend one? I've looked on Amazon but all the descriptions just aren't clear enough...
Unfortunately I have been reading that the "bulky" charger is the only one that will charge the tab properly. My suggestion would be to buy a USB extension cable to solve ur short cable issue.

Really? I swear I read of a cable that would work on computer USB.... darn, my cable is short circuiting at the 30 pin so I need a new one regardless. I have an extention cable already.

Try this:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/design...tch-for-samsung-p1000-black-95cm-length-72276
I leave my tab plugged in overnight to my pc using the supplied samsung usb data cable. It charges at a slower rate but is typically charging about 70% over a 9 hour period.
I also have an USB3.0 2.0m extension cable (tried an ASUS transformer for a week), which allows charging and data transfer ok

That will allow the Tab to charge from any 2A charger (most common would be iPad chargers).
The tab will go into USB charging mode (e.g. charging disabled) with iPad chargers unless you use the cable above or modify the charger.
I haven't had time to investigate, but it MIGHT be possible to allow charging from unmodified iPad chargers with a kernel modifications. Not sure - it depends on whether we have separate ADCs for USB D+ and D- or not.
this will work, you could also buy the cable without the charger.

Can't charge from PC, not enough current available. Best you can do is adapters like th DX one to allow iPad chargers which are often more compact.

Tab, not Tab 10.1 - The original 7" Tab will charge from a PC, the 10.1 will not.
The cable will work with the Tab 10.1 just like the 10.1's stock sync cable - which means it will transfer data but not charge when connected to a PC.
Guys, I keep reading in this thread that the tab 10.1 can't be charged via a PC, well I'm here to tell you it can and does. Every night I leave mine connected to my PC, and in the morning it's charged! Admittedly it's a slower charge rate (seems to be around 6 or 7% per hour), but it charges never the less. I use the samsung supplied cable and nothing else.
Of course, it won't charge if the tab is in use via a PC USB port...

USB Fast Charge mod

Hello I was wondering if there is a mod to have usb fast charge when plugged into the comp. I just came from a Inc and there was a mod flashable through cwm. it was very nice. it charged the phone just as fast as an outlet, if not faster. is there a mod?
thanks
Interesting... I'd be interested in this as well.

the developer behind it for the htc Inc was chad0989
. he made the incredikernels and the incredicontrol app. tried to use incredicontrol app just for fast charging but didnt work since the kernel doesnt support HAVS or SVS. Im on Francos btw
Imoseyon said once any speed charges were done by taking code out that slows it. Nexus doesn't have it in kernel now according to him so not likely.

Would there be a way to selectively trigger AC mode as opposed to USB mode?
just asked this in the IRC chan and few devs said doing this could mess up your computer system. point of the hack would be to trick the cheap car chargers into giving u the full charge, not the computer.

Not many motherboards have USB ports capable of supplying current in excess of the spec 500mA.
Research modding your (car?) Charger to be detected as AC charger instead of USB.
Sent from my Nexus Prime.
What about a mod that allows the 3 pogo pins to receive more than 500mA(recognized as USB)? That seems ridiculously low and is far more relevant/needed. If you want to charge through the pogo pins you are just SOL.

I haven't seen a device that can't do 1A over USB in like a decade.
Hell, even non-PCs have no problems with it. I've done it off a Wii before just for fun.
A lot of newer motherboards can even do 2A over USB (to charge iPads). Most ASUS boards in the past 2-3 years have this as an advertised feature (asus ai charger).
Very interested in this actually. Not so much for USB/AC charging on a computer, but for MHL AC charging.
With the current MHL adapters (even when plugged into an AC outlet), the Gnex reports USB charging. To make maters worse, the screen does not shut off on the Gnex. After an hour or two your battery will die. 500ma is just not enough.
The MHL spec says that 500ma is the charging spec. However, I tweeted with Tim Wong:
http://twitter.com/WongTim
He is the president of the MHL association and he said 500MA is the minimum, not the maximum. My quess is that the Gnex won't try to draw more than 500MA since the data pins can't be shorted on the MHL connector.
I think the MHL adapter will provide for more current, just like most laptops and desktops.
With this mod, it would be nice to tell the Gnex to AC charge. Tim suggest that the phone should not draw more than safely required so long as the voltage doesn't drop on the MHL adapter/MHL tv.
I think the Gnex, by design looks for the shorted data pins and doesn't try to push the envelope as far as monitoring the voltage drop on a USB detected power source.
I recall reading about some smoking/dead phones from fast charging mods. Thanks but no thanks.

I came at this problem from a different angle and accidentally found a solution for you. I have an iPad and it wouldnt charge from my PC so did some research and came up with this:
http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/
Its a free driver from asus that increases the max amp on USB bus. Supports most mobos and works awesome on my PC and dell laptop, I can now charge the iPad on there.
It also has the benefit of fast charging of my Nexus. Double win.
EDIT: Ignore the ****ty site design, it looks terrible but does as it says

Edit: Didn't work for me. Same charging speed with and without it.
Here is a pm back from chad:
I'll look into it and see if I can come up with something for the gnex also. I do not plan to release a kernel, but possibly I could provide a patch.
Can you get me a kmsg (/proc/kmsg) while you plug your phone into an AC source, and then a USB source?
adb shell "cat /proc/kmsg"
Also a log of the power draw while connected to USB and to AC
Thanks

I can... charge my tablet?!

Hey guys,
So I made this rather funny discovery (not surprising though). I have an OTG cable for my Gnex to read USBs, out of curiosity, I plugged in my USB data cable for a Galaxy tab 7 (P1000).
Since this tablet doesn't really have USB host functionality (unless I have like 300 cables and a power source), my Gnex was charging my Gtab :\
If I were to get a new tablet (which I plan to later), could I choose which device to charge which device? Say e.g I want to charge my phone using my tablets power. I ask this since newer tablets have host functionality.
Thanks
Bwahahaha. I have visions of a short guy bringing a tall guy a ladder.

it's not going to work, you can't output power through MHL or host(im pretty sure) and besides the voltage would be to messed up to charge. so no.

I see your point, the charge provided by USB host wouldn't be that high anyway...
Would be a cool function to have though right? I've been caught in situations where I wish my tablet could charge my phone ...

Yes you can output current through OTG, so it is not a wonder that you can charge your tablet. Otherwise you could not even use any memory sticks and such.

I doubt the GNex can output enough power to charge the huge tablet battery at anything but painfully slow 1% per hour process.

Moreover, the Xoom cannot be charged through USB...
But I like the idea to charge the GNex through the tablet. It's got quite a large battery. Two actually.

I won't be charging my tablet much, most likely tablet charging the phone e like you guys have mentioned!

[Q] Charging as USB even though I'm using the wall original wall charger

Hi!
I bought my GNII a week ago and phone is awesome!
The only problem is it takes soooooooooo long to charge. I didn't assume that something was wrong yet since it is new. After charging for the third time and it's still slow, I searched for answers but came back empty. So I'm here hoping somebody could help at least so that I could do everything on my end before contacting my provider.
Here are some information:
1. Charger that I am using is the stock charger that came along with the phone. USB cable and Original Charger.
2. Phone is not rooted.
3. When I plug it using the wall charger (USB cable + Original Charger) it is being detected as USB instead of AC.
Hope somebody could help.
Thanks!

No there aren't , the problem is with the defective 4 pin usb cable bundeld with few of our sets actually we need to have 5 pin cables for proper charging , had exactly the same problem with my s3 puechased a HTC usb cable after that my problem was gone for good.

Yep the one packed with it is usb3 which is a bit faster. The other one is usb2 which is a bit slower.

will it charge like AC after flashing? Rooting it would be my last option since I just discovered it could charge as AC without rooting. The only problem is why it charges as USB on wall charger but AC on a UPS.

That kernel will charge at 900mA by default over a normal usb connection.
I flashed it rather that the sock kernel just for that reason, plus for me it gives improved battery life etc over the stock kernel. You can overclock also but I have no desire to do that with the Note 2 as its pleanty fast enough already.
Does anyone know off a kernel that actually has usb fast charging enabled in it ?

[Q] Very slow charging. why??

When i connect my galaxy note 2 to stock charger it shows that in my battery stats it's charging as USB not AC.
Well what's supposed to be the problem. is my charger broken or the usb port in my phone is damaged??
Are you using the stock charger with the stock USB cable? My note 2 was charging really slow until I realized that the USB extension cable I was using wasn't delivering enough juice.

Do you have another 2A charger/USB cable that you can test from? I use an HP Touchpad charger + cable because its 2A and has a long cable.
I just happen to experience the same thing. I have had my Note II for a couple of weeks now and it have always charged from almost empty to full in less than 2,5 hours. Today however, it's going really slow. I do not know why. I've tried everything I can think of. I juse only the stock charger. Also tried the Ipad charger - no luck. This seem to be a quite common problem.
Hmm, just as I thought, more and more of this should be coming in upcoming days. I lost two good night's sleep because of this. Anyway, this is what I have done and you guys SHOULD do.

I found a huge variance in charging rates based on a combination of chargers and cables. Goes to show that the cable makes a huge difference. Here's my findings:
** Stock Charger (2A):
w/Stock Cable (4-pin) - 1698
w/Cable from another phone (5-pin) - 1698
w/Cable from battery pack (5-pin)- 1698
w/generic eBay cable (4-pin)- 100! - It didn't charge at all, even with screen off.
** iPhone Charger (1A):
w/Stock Cable (4-pin) - 1300
w/Cable from another phone (5-pin) - 1100
w/Cable from battery pack (5-pin) - 1300
w/generic eBay cable (4-pin) - 100!
** Car Charger (1A):
w/another generic eBay cable - 490
