Insights to possible Verizon X Play unlock - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just curious to know as to the thoughts of TSBroiche's discovery of the working sim card slot for Verizon model?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263183&page=6
Has anyone tried it and worked? I have a MAC OSX and wait to see if I can bootunlock my phone on MAC.

I was under the understanding that the sim slot on the r800x was useless since the actual cpu doesn't support GSM? Or are you talking about traveling abroad?

I guess if traveling abroad, then GSM to enable no?
I was not aware that the CPU doesnt support the GSM. I see in the hidden menu that the GSM is active but only working for emergency service.

Sprint version: does not disable GSM?

The Sprint version is being advertised as an international phone, and comes with a Sprint SIM card pre-installed, and what appears to be a security strap, making it difficult to remove.
Before traveling internationally, you can call Sprint ahead of time to have them active their SIM card, and for the low low price of $1.99/minute, you can use overseas GSM networks to make phone calls, and in many cases, data access.
Of course I'd like to buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card and install that for much more reasonable rates while overseas, but I'm not sure if it's as simple as plugging in a different SIM card.
I had read that the Rogers version of the phone required...something to active the SIM slot, and even then seemed not to work for data via 3G.
Anybody else have the Sprint version? Played with GSM yet?
I'm a little apprehensive to start tearing into it to remove their SIM card just yet...
The GSM is 2G only, no 3G.
Well my buddy has a AT&T sim card that i put in my TP2 but it did not work. I switch the phone to GSM only but it did not pick up a network. I also put that sprint sim on his phone but it had no network either. According to the manual its lock from going to a gsm network on the USA.

Hopefully a custom ROM can unlock the ability to use GSM networks in the United States!

good to know.
I read in the manual that it was not usable on US GSM networks too, but I assumed that was because they never intended for you to remove the Sprint SIM card, so of course the Sprint SIM card wouldn't work domestically.
So it seems the Sprint phone can be unlocked for GSM just like the Telus phones, but I haven't read of any success getting GSM 3G to work w/ an unlock code.

d'oh, missed this....
What about EDGE?
Check the specs, if it said gsm 850,1900 it should be able to use with in the US. Just have to sim unlock it first in order to use.

[Q] Verizon model - Sim Unlock Possible

I am interested in getting the Verizon model for how cheap it is. Is it possible to sim unlock the Verizon model to use on T-mobile?
I know someone is offering a boot unlocks and regular sim unlocks with GSM models. Not sure if it will work with the CDMA model.
Insights?
He said he can unlock Verizon locked Plays as well.
He just said on the 12th page post of his unlocking forum that the GSM baseband isnt supported.

Thank you
I think @netorino is right, baseband doesnt allow gsm networks."
I am just asking and double making sure cause I kept seeing people using the word "unlocked". And I know unlocked has multiple meanings. (boot, sim, ect)
I come from HD2 XDA.

Don't quote me...but I think you would be better off getting the AT&T play as its gsm as is T-mob, while Verizon is cdma.

Quick answer? NO, absolutely not.
Longer answer?
Basically the SIM Slot seems to be physically uncoupled from the chassis. Further, the chipset that would be running the GSM is replaced with one for the CDMA. Whether it can function as both is a question, but the chip is actually different (from my teardown to look, the chip numbering is different from the tech/repair manuals).
I would, in general, assume that no phone that is on Verizon (unless it specifically says "World phone" or "World Edition") can be used on T-Mobile. CDMA vs GSM silliness. Different frequencies, different methods, different technologies.
So while the bootloader unlcok could work for the CDMA model, the SIM-unlock wouldn't.
Interestingly enough, there are still traces of the GSM code in the phone's diagnostic menus though.
i have a friend that has a phone repair shop in my hometown. i called him when i found a play that is cdma thru verizon. it is a world phone and has a sim card slot. he said that as long as its a world phone version it can be unlocked for gsm use in the united states. idk im getting one tonight and im gonna tinker with it and once i get it all going i will let everyone know on here if it can in fact be unlocked for gsm use in the US.
Well???

This was stated years ago, the R800x has a sim card slot but it is turned off on a hardware level. It is a non-functioning sim slot.

[Q] Can the LG Optimus G LS970 be unlocked for use with a GSM carrier?

Hi there, I've been looking for this answer all over the internet but it isn't clear to me yet...
Is it possible to unlock a Spring LG Optimus G LS LS970 for use in another country GSM carrier?
I understand that this phone have a micro sim slot and support both Quad Band GSM & HSDPA, and some listings in ebay says that it can be flashed to metro pcs or crickett, also some sites on the net sells the unlock codes for this phone. Thanks in advance...

You would have to have a rom, or software for the sim card to properly pass calls over a GSM network. If you don't want to use sprint, your best off unlocking the device and taking it to metro or boost.

So basically if I do the sim mod and install the correct ROM I'll be able to make calls over any GSM network worldwide?
No ROM currently supports this. Once I get the LGOG off my account I'll play with it.
I couldn't help but say that Boost is Sprint's prepaid option.
Metro isn't the move either, everyone I know who's had it was absolutely furious with their phones and service.

I don't think...
I'm pretty sure the Sprint Optimus G does not have a Micro-SIM slot whatsoever. I have done some research and looked all over my phone and there is no spot there a SIM card would go.
I believe you may be talking about the AT&T version of the phone.
If that is so, I would recommend having a mod move it to the proper forum.

There's no slot for one, but if you tear the phone apart, there is a spot where a micro SIM can be soldered directly to the board so the phone detects it. Check out the link posted earlier in this thread if you're interested. Nobody's gotten it fully-working yet, but the capability is there...

So what's the point? Sprint isn't GSM so the only use for a SIM card would be to save numbers, no? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Partially Wrong

You are partially wrong, If the phone was to be unlocked to another carrier than the SIM card would not only be used for contacts storage but to allow GSM Service on that specific network. For example if I used the SIM mod and unlocked the phone to Tmobile (since they are a GSM based network) than the phone is required to have a SIM for the GSM service and contact storage or you could just use your Gmail Account for your contacts back-up. ( I think that is what it is, Don't hold me to it though)

You cant use that tablet on europe at all, no CDMA carriers there, you need the ATT version and pay 19usd to unlock it.
THERE is NO way to get it working, the SIM slot on the sprint tablet is just for Sh1ts N Giggles..

Not really. I had my note 3 from sorint running on tmobile. But i only had edge and slow service bad voice calling. This phones hardware bands and software bands arent really meant for it. I had to modify the carrier info in my phone to get on tmobile alone. But ince there sorint didnt work anymore. A domestic sim card unlock isnt as easy as with gsm. With gsm the carrier info is practically just in the sim card. But with sprint CDMA it in the phone. Right now sprint sims are just for the lte and spark network. Not the actual use of the phone. So youre kinda out of luck sorry.

Ita bc the hardware is not made for it. The frequencies arent right. If you go to sprinta website the only phones they have that they can domestically unlock for any gsm are the iphones.
