Please help me root this device. I have only ever done my Gs2 a few times with flashing etc, so am basically a complete noob.
I have tried for the last couple of hours and am wanting to go mad. I have followed all the lines about unlocking the device and the fastbook oem unlock, But all it ever tells me is waiting for device. Im guessing im missing drivers, but I have dont the samsung drivers a couple of times, and unzipped and followed the instructions.
Any easier to follow guides or info out there that can help me?
When I plug the phone in to unlock it, i dont get the usual ding from windows, i just get a little thre dings like it doesnt know what it is.
please help. Thanks....
Ps, sorry if I am being stupid or cluttering the forum. cheers..

Haven't rooted mine yet, I'll be doing it at the weekend. Had loads of issues with the drivers when I rooted my Nexus S. In the end I installed PDA net on my PC - the drivers installed with that worked fine (you don't actually use PDA net thereafter) Not sure if this works with the GN but you will not do any harm trying it.

Cheers guys, Im so new to this, its so frustrating. Its got to be a driver issue. My comp reconises the phone when its on, but when its in bootloader mode, windows is giving me three dull bells when connecting the device....
will have a look at the other thread, Have already read that one I think, and looked so foreign to me!!! lol
I cant pst in the other thread, but have downloaded and installed pda net for android, and when it gets to installing the drivers from the phone, it does it all, ie galaxy nexus , the other driver that i cant remember and the galaxy driver is not installing. Even gone two miles down the road and got a different laptop. no matter what I download or ty and install it just dnt do it.
can some one either make a real simple idiots guide for me the idot, or locally please let me pay you a small fee to root these two phones. Im almost in tears after 5.5 hours of constant crap and pathetiness.
Wishing right now i had not bthered with these phones. At least my s2 and flashing was simple.
It says "waiting for device" because for some crazy reason when you are in fastboot mode Windows (which is what I'm using) uses a different USB driver than when you are in "normal" usb connect mode.
What you need do to sort it out is to go to Device Manager and change the driver to use the Samsung instead of whatever crazy one Windows has decided to use. Then you can carry on with doing the bootloader unlocking.

Ok so what have you done so far?
You have the pdanet drivers installed on your pc?
You need to boot into fastboot mode to install the driver you need to root your phone.
*THIS* guide will explain what adb and fastboot are exactly.
*THIS* guide will show you how to set up adb and fastboot.
When unlocking the bootloader you will need the file fastboot.exe which you can put in the root of your c drive for easy access. The atteached file needs to be renamed from .zip to .exe as you cant attach .exe files in xda.
If you have any more questions then just ask .
Mark.
ok..... having gone through similar a few minutes ago.
The drivers kept saying that they had failed to install. kept trying over and over.
then i twigged:
1) made sure debugging mode was on
2) Rebooted the unit into bootloader mode - suddenly the adb driver installed successfully doh !
wonder if this is the same issue you are having ... the adb drivers only install successfully once the nexus is connected via usb and in bootloader mode
of course you may know all that already but it had me stumped for a while
Thank you guys, some good info and detailed posts, which is what I was hoping for! I'm in bed now, but will give this a blast and report back tomorrow!
Really appreciated!
Thanks .......

Big thanks to everyone. Woke up with a clearer head and proceeded to try again. Done as wilbur said and installed drivers in recovery mode. And perfect.......
after so many problems all was sorted. Then used superboot, and all was ok. 2 galaxy nexus's rooted. think the lesson learnt is to walk away instead of furiously trying things.
Cheers for all the input. What a easy methd ONCE all the drivers are there!!
Cheers people
Glad you got it sorted

I tried the "IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!!".... to no avail.
I had fallowed the instructions to a tee and around step 55 it all went down hill, it was supposed to automatically flash a ROM and it did nothing, and now i have probably screwed it up worse. Phone is still 100% functional but i would like to reset back to factory settings, no root, no nand, no custom rooted ROMS, nothing.
Does anyone know of a way to get my phone back to the way it was when i walked out of Best Buy earlier today?
Thanks for the help and all the great resources here at XDA.
Daugusta.
Search for and run the RUU
Step 55? Thats the idiot proof guide? I followed the original guides and there were like 10 steps max..
Haha, could i snag a link to the guide you used? also, where can i find this RUU?
Thanks.

This is not flashed, its an exe so its run while your phone is plugged in. Should go smoothly, but as always know the risks of flashing anything
I've heard toasts method is pretty solid for rooting.
Quick question wouldn't this be in Q & A? Not trying to come off as a jerk. Just my 2 cents

RUU Is not working, i get it to start, it restarts my phone and then sits their at a black screen that says "HTC" Then the program says "Waiting for boot loader" and counts to like 75 and then errors saying that it cannot connect to the phone. I then tried to start the process, pull the battery, then manually put it into the boot loader and the program never recognizes it.
Anyone else have another idea, or a way to get this working?
Thanks,
Daugusta
I believe you have to use HTC sync when you run it, though I could be mistaken. Search YouTube, there's a video of it somewhere. I wouldn't give up on rooting just yet though.
Trust me im not giving up
Try the 1-click Root Method
I looked at the fifty-five step root method and peed my pants, then I hit up jiqqaman's one-click root method. Stable root, and you can flash the stock (rooted) rom.

When I have ran an rru from previous HTC phones I have had to have sync up. But then again its never been at a black screen

Ya, i had the HTC sync running as well, synced up fine with my comp but the RUU still gave me the same error.
Im running this on Win 7 64 Bit, im guessing the 64 bit may be the problem. ill try it on a different comp and see how it goes.
Just tried it on a 32 bit Windows 7 comp, still same issues.
Sucks man, coming from the iphone world this rooting stuff seems a hell of a lot more complicated. The last jailbreak I did on my 3GS I downloaded 1 program, plugged by phone into the PC, clicked 1 button and bam!
This andriod root stuff is waaaaay more difficult, NAND this, bootloader that, recovery this, RUU that, adb this, zip and flashing all kinds of stuff. Wish there was a simpler method. Im obviously a noob so Im sure it will get easier with time.

There shouldn't be any problems caused by 64-bit OS. I used Win7 Ult 64-bit and it worked fine. Do you have the HTC Sync drivers? That may fix the problems you have.

I noted this too, only I didn't have an iPhone, just an iPod Touch. Despite this, I am having a lot more fun with Android and how it works. I.E. *.9.pngs which made made jaw drop when I understood how it works. SO AMAZING.
I don't think I will ever be much of a dev, but who knows. I have been digging through a TON of documentation over the past 2-3 weeks.
Thread moved to Q&A.
well I'm pretty much over this rooting business. Ill wait for the official froyo update from Sprint/HTC and not worry about this crap, no camera, instability, bricking, etc. Guess I'm not much of an android hacker and the phone works pretty well bone stock.
Here are my questions...and please explain this to me like I am mentally retarded haha...
For returning my phone to bone stock, Like Day 1, same as it was when I walked out of Sprint store...
1) download .exe file from post #1 onto my PC
2) plug EVO into USB on PC (run in USB debug mode?)
3) Run .exe file while EVO is in Andriod
4) Select yes, yes, blah, blah and it will do its thing automatically?
Is this correct? Some have mentioned I need to download HTC sync onto PC. Yes - No? Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully someone can comment THAT HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS and not just guessing/speculation can assist.

Great question.. Some of these long winded threads need trimming and a definite answer listed out. Clutter = confusion
Im stupid stuck on the first step and Ive been at it for a week now, I just want to Root, then Ill never need to PC plug the phone again.
The problem is my Evo 4G ONLY connects to the pc to charge. Ive tried fixes, sorry, Ive wasted time on fixes and help posts; I did just successfully install 3.29.651.5IMG.zip from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448, but that was just been an update.
Anything Terminal Emulator, HBOOT or RECOVERY I can do, thanks for the help, google searching is pulling up all androids, allphone models, all Dates, I keep getting 2009 results.
ALSO, to anyone interested in Metro Flash, the 10 dollar phone flashing service from Metro PCS; in Nevada, found out yesterday, MetroFlash isnt available because the setup or network is/are changing or something. I forgot the specifics, but the rep said that even if I went and did it in CA, it wouldnt work in NV because of that.

Do you have HTC Sync downloaded to your cpu. IF you don't you need to, so that you will have the drivers that you need to start the process.
I tried versions 2.something and the version on the htc support site, thanks though.

And you are sure you are downloading the correct version. Are you on windows? 32bit? 64bit? Mac? All of that matters so you D/L the correct version otherwise your cpu will not recognize your phone and install the drivers. If its not doing that then it has to be that you aren't having the drivers installed correctly.
I've had a bad USB cable be the culprit of my computer not recognizing my phone. Mine would say "unrecognized USB device" though.
I would try another cable and report back.
Dude i friggin LOVE the help, but the port on the phone is screwed. i actually came back to elaborate on my response; Ive downloaded Most of what I could to ADB if it were working- JDK, Android SDK full, super 1 click, autoroot, unrevoked3, and several RUUs. Initially I followed directions, after nothing working, I experimented. Then I did a faulty usb port search, and all of the suggestions were 'unplug and replug' and such. Its defected.
Spencer my computer isnt responding at all to the USB plug, but thats what posts said, it could be the port or the cord or the pc usb port/hub. its my phone.

Oooooooh, well you're probably looking for help in the wrong place. You need to take the phone for repair. But I did see a thread on here someone posted about how to root without using a computer, but I didn't actually open it to see what the process was. Maybe that will help you out.
You know what Swaze, Im un and re-installing right now, its HTC Sync SETUP 3.0.551, the other was htc sync2.0.35. Be back after the reboot.

I didnt answer either, but I have win7 32 and 64bits installed on this pc, Ive been on the 32bit since the first day.

Try mailing the files to u then use a file explorer to move where u want them. Unless ur using an ruu I don't think u actually need connection.
If I remember right unrevoked has set it up where u can do everything. from your phone using a web site. Maybe I'm wrong.

sand thats actually something worth trying, use a root file explorer to copy/paste the flash-image files since I dont have S-Off. Nice, thanks dude.
This will probably sound like the dumbest idea EVER but why can't you just buy a card reader and put the images on the SDCard the old fashioned way? Seems easy enough to me, am I missing something? Also couldn't use just copy the files over using your DropBox? Thats how I do it.
or how about WiFi Explorer? its an app in the market lets you browse and copy files to your SDCard via WiFi.

Update- Root Manually
Following Sand's suggestion, I began google searches of the manual root processes, supporting information, etc.
Here's where we're at
I began by copying the flash-image to the proper system folders, using Root Explorer, File Expert works too. If you copy files to system/protected folders with an ordinary file manager, the permissions fail.

Just updated another post, and this is what I put

this was the most recent attempt, Android lacks adhoc support though
ADB For Beginners
Commands like 'cp' and 'cat' are used interchangeably it seems, when I find a fuller command list incorporating more, this one will be replaced
Always Up To Date Root Guide
This is a great place for ideas if you're stuck, theyve put all the verified instruct-files on one page. I guess thats what moderators on forum sites do, consolidate information, this was just easy to read without weeding through any unrelated information
Evo 4G Root/Android Root
This was another promising page I came across, but the the 300mb zip failed installation. 'Main Version is Older', all the files in the zip were for like 1.0 and my Evo's radio is 2.15. Changing the Android-info.text in rom .zips to match my devices information was my next idea. Do not do it though, scanning google result lines said it could brick your android.
Visionary, No ADB
This is last because it was a bastard, long story short its not even for the Evo. The jerk.
Updated Again - ADB over Tcp/Ip Works, How to Root?
I was tethering when I found the Adb over wifi so I didnt test it- shouldve though. I connect now cmd tells me, but the 1 step rooters arent working. Before I waste another weeks chasing bad paths, what should I use?
After wasting so much time with your issue, why haven't you used the time to get the phone fixed/replaced?
I had similar issues when I rooted my phone. My phone kept disconnecting while the rooting process was taking place. The issue I found out was my USB cord. I went to the Sprint store and got a new one, then my computer (W7) detected my phone through disk drive.
The new cord worked, using the AutoRoot program found in the rooting section here, and it completed my root.
I hadnt thought of that

Is there a way to root the Gingerbread rom without having to get adb to work?
Because it will not work for me.
Far as I know you'll need adb. Keep trying. You'll get it. When I had a backflip over a year ago. I went crazy trying to understand how to root. Now adb is easy. Easier with win xp I think.

Yah my problem this time was that i didnt have a driver. but that link worked. none of the ones on this website would though.
Everywhere i read it says i have to downgrade first. i was following the guide but i have to install the original g2 OTA signed.
Now ive ran into the problem that every copy i try to download is corrupt. just my luck. a 30 min process takes 5 hrs. or more.
I got to the point where adb reboot my phone into bootloader after the the temp root and did not realize the update.zip would not work. now im afraid to turn my phone back on. i dont want to have to do everything over again.
Ok figured that out. Windows xp was set to hide file extensions so i was nameing is pc10img.zip.zip
Guess ill see what problem lies ahead. i swear i could write a 100 step write up of what i have to do for a 15 step write up.
Got it rooted. Just took all day. Could not let my phone win. LOL.
Havent spent that long on a phone since i installed android and full WP7 dual boot on my HD2.
I run xp x86 on a computer that came with vista. maybe thats why i was having a problem.
I was able to install the nand backup from my old phone right to this phone. just a million hours of tinkering. I cant imagine how frustrated the developers get trying to make these roms work. i bet there compulsive about it though.
If someone sees this please put these drivers on the how to sticky section.

XP and vista shouldn't matter with the chip architecture so long as it supports it. But then again if it didn't, it would not install at all, and if it did for some weird reason it would not boot so that wasn't your problem.
Previously I had installed on my phone (I believe, but could be mistaken) a Twilight Kernel and Hurricane v1.6 Rom. Well, I had nothing but problems with the rom, and put up with them for some time, just because I didn't have time to go through and find a rom I liked and flash it. I decided to do just that yesterday.
Apparently my mind broke and I did something wrong (probably numerous things). I had first attempted to put the shiney new CWM9 with Shadow Kernel on, rather, I made the mistake of trying to just put the Shadow Kernel on after having done a full (triple) wipe on my phone. I got the boot loop for the kernel since there was no rom (duh) loaded. Okay, no problem, I'll toss a rom on the SD and boot into CW3 and flash it? Yeah, not so much. I got a short "Samsung" logo boot loop and could not get into CW3 after that.
So, I Odin'd it back to EL30, thinking I'll just start from fresh, right?
Wrong.
Next in the series of mistakes I made, I forgot that I had already downloaded and installed the Samsung drivers (don't ask, my brain was apparently on leave yesterday) and attempted to re-install them. They did not like this and would not progress and I had to End Process the install from Task Manager. I then uninstalled the drivers completely fearing that I may have corrupted them by trying to re-install and then EP'ing them.
I then re-installed them, or so I thought. Plug phone in and start again with One Click Root. Fail. The script couldn't find my device.
Hours of searching and trying different things later, script still couldn't find my device, though I now have both the phone recognizing there is a USB connection, and the computer has stopped yelling at me that there are no drivers (I believe it finally gave up and installed the Windows drivers for it). But still can't get it rooted or do anything but stock stuff.
So..
1:Samsung drivers won't install, running Windows 7-64 Ultimate; error at end of install just states: "The MMS InstallWizard was not successfully installed SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones v1.3.450.0."
2hone previously recognized USB Debug mode, but no longer. Will only Recognize standard USB connection, and with the connection made to PC, the script will not recognize the device.
3:adb for all intensive purposes does not appear to be loading..per the message from the script "Root was not obtained after 60 seconds. Make sure the phone is connected and that adb is working. If adb shell isn't root, reboot the phone and try the script again." I've rebooted numerous times, but I'm pretty certain that since it's not going into Debug, it's just not being recognized.
I have even tried Gingerbreak with no luck, just continuously sits on the rooting screen, but never proceeds (upwards 45 minutes I let it go).
Please please please please help me fix all the mistakes I did and get this thing working again and get the damned drivers installed proper.
(Baseband-S: D700.0.55.EL30, Kernel version 2.6.35.7, Build number: Gingerbread.EL30)
Note* I am happy with any root/kernel/rom at this point, I don't care, I just want the damned thing rooted again.
And of course after I finally cave and post for help, I find the thread where it clearly states OneClick Root no longer works for Gingerbread...so we'll add that into the mistakes I made...
Question still stands, how do I get this rooted again?

If you are up and running EL30 just Google How to Root Samsung Epic on EL30 and a qbking77 youtube video will pop up and all the links are there as well for the files you need. IT'S DONE!!! Again thank you both so much1
I've literally tried every method on the internet to root the GSM Galaxy Nexus and I keep getting stuck at the very beginning: I can't get past the driver step and making sure the computer recognizes the phone as an ADB device. I've tried Samsung driver install, pdaNET drivers and just about any other method and I still can't get my computer to show that the device is a ADB device and therefore cannot root the phone.
Its a Play Store Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.4
all help is incredibly appreciated. I've been working on this problem since Friday.
I'm on a 64bit Windows 7 on a Dell XPS 15 computer

If your Command Prompt displays the message "waiting for device" your driver wasn't successfully installed.
Close the Command Prompt window and open Device manager while your phone is still plugged in. (Search for it using the search option).
Right Click the "Android" option and select Update Driver. Choose to "Browse My Computer" and "Let Me Pick From A List." Pick the Samsung driver with the newest date and install it. Now retry the code above.

Try this.
I've tried updating via device manager. The problem is, it always says its up to date or when I manually select one it still doesn't work. Should I just not pick the newest driver? Pick an older version when selecting a new driver?
EDIT: also, another issue is that with Wug's when it searches for the adb device is searches in an odd folder that doesn't exist and I can't figure out how to change where it looks

Or download the GNex Toolkit. Was having driver issues as well today (they were installed but for some strange reason Windows didn't recognize it anymore) and used the ones that come with this toolkit to reinstall through device manager. Of course as always with these things, use at your own risk, fiddling with drivers can be tricky .
What are you getting from your adb devices command? I had a problem with mine showing as consistantly offline. I had to change from a frontal USB port (usually a bad idea anyway) to a rear port. Some device/computer combinations make adb unhappy when using a USB hub, which most frontal USB ports essentially are.

When I use WugFresh and check for ADB it checks a nonexistent directory and returns an error. I found another method on google (I think the webpage was Foolproof method or something) and I check through command prompt and when I do it says List of Devices: then a blank line underneath
EDIT: just installed the GNex toolkit and drivers, plugged in, adb devices and it returned the blank line
EDIT 2.0: I just witnessed the most beautiful thing in the world. I plugged in again and it miraculously worked. I think I might tear up and cry a little
Yeah, for some reason the USB Driver in the Android SDK does NOT work. This was incredibly frustrating when I was trying to unlock my phone originally. I spent probably 30 minutes googling and trying different driver downloads.
I have attached the ones I used that DO work.
So here is the new story:
unlocked bootloader but it did not factory reset. It rebooted and my phone is as it was.
When I went to do fastboot boot boot.gsm.img, It says boot.img downloads and then it takes me to the google logo screen and gets stuck

I've never rooted an already installed ROM for the Galaxy Nexus, but might I ask why you're not just installing a pre-rooted ROM from recovery? It'll save you a lot of headaches for sure. Even if you're not into custom builds, there's plenty of AOSP pre-rooted builds out there

I don't think the pre-rooted ROMs get OTAs, or do they? I've been trying to root on stock so I can still get OTAs and I like how stable it is. I've messed with other ROMs on other phones and I almost always go to stock or CM but I'd rather stick to stock on this for now
Okay I can understand that. However do realize that once you install an OTA, your root will probably be gone and you'll have to root manually once more ...
i actually delete any driver and use the pdanet works just fine, i had the same problem that you. is just mather of patience.

Yea re-rooting is fine. I really only need root for a few days to get my phone set up but K really don't need root privileges in everyday use so losing root once I've done what I need is ok

Maybe not. SuperSU has a feature to keep root when installing an OTA.

Man.. as easy as this:
Go to bixie's jb rom thread, he has there linked a supersu+busybox cwm flashable zip, dl that and copy it to the device. Dl also a non-touch cwm image.
Unlock your bootloader, bla bla follow guides on how to set up/use fastboot, BOOT cwm (not flash it) with 'fastboot boot cwm.img', flash that supersu zip, reboot. Done, you rooted jb, install voodoo root keeper or something, back up root. Thats one way how to root a Nexus. You can even relock your bootloader after you finished customizing.
