[Q] Link2SD - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to figure this out by skimming the Link2SD topic, but seeing that there were 202 pages intimidated me. I have a few simple quick questions.
1. Does Link2SD work with Android 2.3.3 or is it only for older versions of Android?
2. If I have previously moved things to SD using the native Apps2SD support, do I have to uninstall them before I use Link2SD?
3. If the answer to the above is No, is there a performance hit in not doing so?
4. Does Link2SD require an unlocked bootloader?
5. Does it work on the rooted Verizon Xperia Play running the stock ROM?
I think that's it. I'm going to probably go ahead and experiment with the program anyway, but if someone can shortcut the process by answering these questions, that would be a big help!
Thanks!

EDIT:
1. YES - works on 2.3.3
2. NO I didn't have to uninstall them, just link them.
3. No but some programs may need to be uninstalled and reinstalled before they work. And some apparently don't like being linked.
4. Apparently not.
5. Yes, it appears to.

I want to set up a partition on my SD card so I'll have to format the card first, so all most of my apps will be half deleted because I have used app2sd on them. If I copy the current contents of my SD to my PC and then copy it back after I've created the partition, will everything be ok ?.

App2SD...????????????????

Sorry Guys if am asking this Question here....i have searched full XDA Forum for this ....got ans too but still have confusions.....
1st of all wanna know what is App2SD....Hope its the application to transfer all your application installation to SD card....
2nd i have tried several methods listed here in forum...but no result.....SD card is having full space and phone memory is just 50 MB left.....
Tried Defrost application and selected all installation to external media....(Hopefully this is the correct method...but didn't figured out for me yet....)
Tried to give EXT3 partition to SD of 512 MB...but here i don't know the full procedure and really confused how to go about.....
Tried for Froyo ROM's as i believe its having inbuilt capability to install all app to SD card....No result yet....
I requet all my frnds here to just giude me to the right path...i am sure i will do the rest ..... really confused with a lot of explanation given in forum....
One more small help needed...i need to have HTC Default dialer application as some of the ROM has removed it with some other application....

Someone please guide me........please
Instead of bumping your thread have you tried looking at the thread of the chef released rom for your phone as you might realise that others have same issue with the rom or not. I did a quick search of forums and i managed to find the answers within seconds.
We cant support your rom as we dont know what you are using / version and questions regarding that rom need to be posted in the correct forum thread

Sorry M8...But i am really confused with several ROM's and Methods listed here...
I will follow your instructions in future....Sorry Again....
Different roms work differently and you really need to try one, then ask about it in the chefs rom thread and if you dont like try another. Swapping roms and trying to use the same instructions on each may not work so you are only confusing yourself.

A2SD is indeed moving apps to the external memory. A lot of custom roms have it. It requires an EXT partition on your memorycard, an easy way to do that is to get rom manager from market

Thread moved to Q&A.
judging by your post, you have already rooted your phone
here's an example how to do it with Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM v1.0c, which has built in old A2SD. I think it should work
- backup apps and system data with Titanium Backup Donate
- copy sd card content to pc in disk drive mode (by doing this, you will also copy your backups)
- download rom, radio and put them in root folder of your sd card
- you need to have some sort of recovery (whether it's update.zip in root, or permanent recovery - it's your choice)
- say a little prayer
- enter hboot -> recovery
- wipe all alvailable options (it depends on your current settings): data, cache, davlik cache, ext
- flash radio, it will ask for you to reboot from recovery, do it, it will restart few times, don't interrupt process of instalation.
- flash rom
-after you finish it, don't reboot, instead partition sd card using standard options: swap 0, ext2 512, fat32 rest, sd: ext2 to ext3 (this will format and partition your sd card, you will loose it's content
- reboot your phone, it will last longer than usual
- copy your sd card content from pc back to sd
- install titanium backup donate and restore system data and apps, it should force apps you previously had installed to sd
- reboot phone to finish restore
- install quick system info and check if your A2SD storage is partialy filled with data
-you should have your current apps and settings with A2SD enabled
Finally did it today with ROM manager huh......
Thanking all for support...

[Q] Moving EVERYTHING to SDcard or just "a part" ??

Hey Guys! Im new on this forum (even though i have made this account some time ago, i never used it )
So.. i just Rooted my HTC Desire, which i've been so afraid of. But now i had to to it regarding the lack of SD-card installing.. BUT! now i installed this neat app called something like "app2sd" which unlocks the installing to SD-card, but it just unlocks the feature like the FroYo update unlocked, just on some other apps?
So my question is.. CAN i move the WHOLE app to my SD-Card, and can i do it without flashing a custom rom or whatever? (which i am afraid of doing) because i want some of those GAMELOFT apps and the main app does still fill up some space unfortunately..
I hope you get what i'm saying (im not the best at english, but im trying )
If you didnt understand me, and want to help me, just tell me and ill try slicing it in pieces
Thanks in advance!
- Mathias
Well the froyo a2sd do in fact move the full app. It just leaves data and dalvik cache behind on /data. But to answer your question, yes it is possible, but the best implementations of a2sd is found in the custom roms. Those are also a natural extend, when you have rooted your phone. And btw. there is no risk involved in flashing a custom rom at all. The risky part is the root process itself.
If you want proper a2sd, you must go about it in the following steps:
1. backup all files on you sd-card to your computer
2. install rom manager
3. in rom manager choose to partition your sd-card. Just pick 512 for ext, 0 for swap and the rest for fat32
4. Move all your stuff back to the sd-card, which should now show up as being 512 mb smaller
5. Pick a custom rom and download the zip file like leedroid, if you like the stock look(or find a flashable zip containing the files for a2sd)
6. backup anything necessary and flash the zip through recovery
edit: and btw. don't excuse your english. It's not bad compared to many other people on this board

Thanks for the fast answer!
Well its not for breaking my phone im afraid of using custom ROM, my problem is that theres always some issues, and i've heard something about the RADIO or some stuff??
But if theres a custom ROM based on the FroYo which allows me to move EVERYTHING from my internal to external, which would you recommend, and wheres a good spot to find alot of those roms?
By the way, i also want them in danish language!
Well as for stability, those completely based on the stock roms(leedroid) are just as stable as the htc-ones. And if you are already on froyo, updating the radio shouldn't be necessary. And the only roms without danish language on here is the one labeled miui(some chinese custom rom) btw. im danish myself.
But the way you want to completely move /data to /sd-ext is called data2ext, and i personally wouldn't recommend it, as everything gets kind of laggy in my experience. This is due to the sd-card being much slower in read/write rates than the nand chip, so keep as much as possible internal without filling it up. I would recommend a2sd+ instead, which should give you plenty of space for apps as well
A great rom build on std. htc with a2sd+ is leedroid as already mentioned or auraxtsense, if you want a different theme.
Yea I see but let's keep it English as some people might find it useful :b
But now I ran into another problem .. which is, that I know used that app2sd unlocker and now I can't put widgets on my homescreen from the apps? Like handcent sms if you know it?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes that is because the froyo a2sd solution stores the apps on the fat32 partition which is not initialized before late in the bootprocess meaning the apps is not accessible when widgets are loaded. So using froyo a2sd you should keep apps with widgets on internal.
But with a2sd+ on leedroid or a similar Rom this won't be a problem as the ext partition is initialized early in the boot process. So go with one of the custom roms. That would be my recommendation
Alright then.. but is my data from my apps stored on my sdcard? Like I have "3gwatchdog", and it has stored all of my data transfers. Is that saved when I back up my sdcard and just install the program on my custom Rom?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
No, data from apps is still stored on the internal memory
The ONLY way to get it all onto the SD card is to use a custom ROM which includes Data2SD - but it's still a bit buggy and can lead to a quicker death of your SD card
So theres no way, that I can save my stats from my apps, so I can restore them on my custom Rom??

Thanks for telling me about that app! But my problem as I see it now, is that when I wanna use Titanium backup, I do need "busybox" and busybox fails when I try to install it? On the market it also says that HTC Desire is not supported?
- what am I supposed to do then?

[Q] How do you permanently disable froyo apps2sd?

I've tried to search all of XDA, but I could find anyone wanting to fully disable froyo's apps2sd.
I prefer to use DT a2sd on my ext3 partition. With using Ti backup and installing from the market, some apps get installed on the SD in the .android.secure folder. Its a pain for me to one-by-one move them off the SD and back onto the phone, so DT a2sd moves them to the ext3.
So, does anyone know how to disable froyo's apps2sd? I'm using a sense ROM if that matters.
Thanks!
Bump. Back to the top.
Anybody? I know there's some smart people in XDA that would know how to do this.

Looking for an answer to this as well.
There are apps to sd apps that let you move all apps on sd to internal memory, but I've never used one.
I know in cyanogenmod there's an option in settings to choose install location for apps (internal/external/automatic) but I'm not sure about your rom. If you're using stock I know it isn't there but otherwise you could check your settings.
Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.

That's the file I'm looking for. I've read in a Droid forum somewhere there's a . sh file that can be edited to have the same effect as cyanogen's option.
I'm on a sense based ROM, and I can't find that file.

I see it. I think someone had discussed a "<some name>.sh" file to edit that sounds like what the cyanogen setting does.
I opened the sh file you pointed to and it just came up with gibberish.

I don't have a direct solution for you, but this app might help ease the pain:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&feature=search_result
It's designed to help people go the other way around, but it groups apps into three tabs -- On Phone (movable), on the SD card, and phone only. You could use the "On SD Card" tab to help you find the apps that are on the SD card, and you can click on one to go right to the app page and move it back.
You'll want to turn off "Notifications" under settings, as that feature notifies you when apps can be moved the SD card, which isn't what you're wanting to do.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep this in my back pocket.
The reason I'm looking for this mod is to avoid having apps default to the SD card when I restore them from Ti backup or purchase them from the market. Some apps (like angry birds for example) will default to SD card when available.
I'm trying to trick the system into thinking the SD is not available for app installs.
http://androinica.com/2010/08/03/how-to-install-apps-to-the-sd-card-by-default-on-android-2-2-froyo/
You could try this, but backwards. At the very end it tells you how to set it to internal memory. I'm not sure if location 0 is internal or automatic. Since location 2 is external, location 1 might be internal. You could try both. Hope this helps.

Awesome! Now that's what I was looking for!
Not sure what "pm" command does, but it took. I set it to zero; now I need to find a way to test it. Just I'll have to disable Dark Tremors a2sd and verify. If someone has tested this, let me know if zero is the right setting to force only internal installation.
Here's the followup question: Where is "setInstallLocation" defined in the system (file)?
That way I can use root explorer to verify the setting and not just push a value with the terminal or adb.
Thanks again!

Question about the Wildchild Custom ROM Firmware...

I was thinking of installing the Wildchild ROM but wasn't sure if a few things that I use on a daily basis were working because nobody had asked about them..
Anyway,
1. Does the Camera work?
2. Does Mobile Network work?
3. How much Internal Storage is user available?
4. What's the difference between the Odex'ed version and the De-Odex'ed version?
Thanks! :highfive:

1.Yes
2. Yes
3. Depends if you have data 2sd or link2sd.
4. You can theme deodexed version. Odex has more internal memory.
Use odex if u want to use link2sd. Otherwise deodex. No doubt it has got everything working accept for HTC bloatwares. If u want pure sense u can always choose wildchild sense.
For internal storage go to the link in my sign and check the second last image.

From the horse's mouth:
1. Like a ****ing BOSS!
2. (See above.)
3. That info is provided to you in a snazzy (yet outdated) graphic in Post #1 of the original WildChild thread. Found here, for your viewing pleauremints.
4. Lots of good tutorials here on XDA will explain that in detail but the nutshell is this: ODEX == (more room in the /data partition); DEODEX == (more room in the /system partition). Since it is desirable for most sane users to have as much users space in /data (for your apps!) then it is in your best interest to try the ODEX'ed version. If, however, you wanna get funky with Link2SD (or a2sd/data2sd/etc.) and desire to theme my ROM, then you'll wanna get DeOdex'ed because it will be a pain in the ass to mod otherwise.
Take care, and don't forget to slap a THANKS my way, Billie Jean!

Flashed it, it's brilliant! Love the transitions and lock-screen especially. Could I suggest one thing though? There's an app called "ROM Toolbox Lite" that has the features of a few of the apps you included in the ROM such as "AdFree" "File Expert" "Link2SD" and "NoFrillsCPU" inside the one app. It's pretty useful and means I don't have to keep switching apps to do everything I need to do. There's nothing wrong with what's there it's just for simplicity's sake.. Still, this is the first ROM I've flashed and I love it. Thanks!
Also, I'm pretty new here. So how do I thank your last post? I can't find a button or anything?

Something similar happened on my tablet a while ago, it said it didn't recognise that is was there but if you go in to Settings>SD and Storage, it should show all the statistics etc.. and give the option to mount or unmount the card. If its unmounted then just mount it, problem fixed. If it is mounted (Mine was) then it's just the phone being awkward. The only difference it makes though is that you have to go into a file manager or link2sd to move anything to it. You can't move things from the built in file manager... If it's not like either of those then either the SD card is full or i'm outta ideas.. Sorry if this doesn't help...

i found mistake. all partitions of sd card must be primary.
*sigh* This is probably the best ROM out there that I can find, and I can't use it because my phone is CDMA, so everything but wifi and mobile works, and I really need those.
Please please please consider making a marvelc/cdma version of this ROM. I don't want to have to settle for an inferior ROM just because of this. Or if you know of an app I can install that will fix this issue, please let me know

clockwork mod and root questions on Galaxy s3 question.

I am attempting to install clockwork mod on my Samsung galaxy s3 and want to know if the Samsung Galaxy s3 (metroPCS) in the setup is the right install for model number SGH-I747M. Im asking this because when rooting my phone i used the wrong Samsung root and ending up bricking my phone. I then went to a store where they do that kind of stuff and got them to recover and install root for me. Im still running on stock firmware thou. Wondering also if im fine with stock firmware 4.1.2, but would stock firmware limit me in any way for root apps?
Termal emulator the java enabler scripted for dolphin doesn't work for me. Also someone link me to that muiltitouch scripted.
DroidSailAPP2SD sometimes when i have it guided to install to SD card it says insignificant space for some apps. I deleted the cache for playstore like i read on another post and i think that worked maybe.
when i click on install to sd card it just brings me to the app info page. Is that normal or is there soppost to be some sort of progress bar.
If I install on sd card and take out the card will the apps be disabled or will it crash?
Just installed ADfree didn't seem to get rid of adds on tetris. Maybe i have to set it up some how?
Rom toolbox seems like, a all around program. Worth the full version?
uninstaller app worked wonderfull.

I went in the dolphin settings and checked and there is a flash box i picked it. I think it has flash now. haven’t checked. The forum i must of read was prob old and they added it in a newer update.
I really think apps are not installing on SD card. I looked under clockwork mod and theirs an option to partition the SD card for installation of apps. Like I said I press the install to SD card and it goes to app info page on a different app. I don't see any transferring bar or anything. Next time i gotta see how much memory i have to compare.
Is that what I was I soppost to do? I still haven’t installed clockwork mod im afraid of it being a different version still.
i don't think Droidsail is doing anything. I select the file then click on move selected app and it asks me for root access and when it does it goes to the app info page. No progress bat or anything.
I found another app called foldermount witch I think makes a directory on your sd card with the app. looks like it works. looking at the folder it seems that it just copys the app. When i check how big the app folder is it's the same size both on the sd card and internal. Apps are located at Android/data right?
I need a answer for the clockworkmod asap.
I found another thread about Mounts2sd.It requires me to make a SD-EXT partion do i do this by enabling the cache-move the cache partion to data or sd-ext. going to read the thread thouly
