I recently purchased an 8525 and stumbled on to this fantastic site.
It's like a kid in a candy store. Unfortunately I have no idea the language you speak but want to learn where can I get a crash course on all this?
I am stunned by the level of features that you all apparently have and I want them too. So if someone could guide me to kindergarten class it would be appreciated.

before you get flammed - I'd suggest looking through a few posts to get an idea what you want to do, and learn the structure of what you have to work with.
Options:
Install customizations on your currently installed operating system
Reflash to a custom OS
Build your own custom OS
Upgrade to a newer Radio
Install custom first and second splash screens
But if you do any flashing - read the Wiki and INSTALL HARDSPL FIRST!!!!

I agree with mattk_r look around before you start asking questions you have found the right section so your on the right path. Your 8525 is a Hearms model made by HTC. if your on the OS it shipped with then your using WM5 A lot of the people around here have had 20 versions of WM6 flashed to their units. So before you try to flash READ,READ, READ everything you need to know is in "XDA-Wiki" and as stated above, before you try anything make sure you "hard spl" your device ,don't ask me what that is go to Wiki and find out everything you need to know is there. If you don't then you are going to find out what the term "Brick" means and you don't want to no that.Good luck and welcome to the club
read read read. There's always new roms coming out. Watch one and follow it along and see how bugs get worked out. I read and watched for about a month before i finally tried one.
When you do actually decide to flash a new ROM, you should definately check out Mr. Vanx's site. His walk-throughs are top-notch.
Before you do anything ake sure you have Hard SPL on your device. You'll find it in the Hermes Upgrading forum. After that you should be good to play. I spent a few months reading different threads just to see what everyone was talking about. It did me a world of good because I knew the terms and roughly what to do.
Hi...also, check out the well done new member intro (by stevebonning) here:

Thanks for being gentle on me. I will read, read, read as suggested.
Again all of you guys and gals are freakin amazing as I read thru these I am impressed by your creativity and ingenuity to work around programs.
Just wondering - there seems to be across various threads hints at reasons not too, such as iffy GPS & battery performance hit.
Anything I should be aware of before I try ( just made a Goldard )
If you screw up the Apps2SD installation, you can kiss your USB functionality goodbye. It's less concerning because it's affecting very few people, but it's more concerning because nobody really knows why it happens in the first place. They're still working on possible fixes.
I've experienced better battery life, myself.

Search! Read! Post new thread anyway? Sigh!!!
I came on the forum for a look around about 45 minutes ago, ever since I have been reading and reporting threads (as per recent mod request) that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Please search, read, learn instead, far more fruitful and doesn't damage the forum usability for everyone else.
Good thread. I learned something here.
Go easy on the OP.
It's not that easy to search and find the older threads because few people tag their threads. In this case he did fine the threads but perhaps he wants to know in the context of THIS phone? Also, this thingy evolves very fast so an updated info is probably warranted.
Sorry j-zeus if I was a little over zealous there. This was about the fifth thread I had come across. I'm sure you can appreciate the irony of stating in your OP that you had found other threads on the subject but that you had decided to start a new one anyway.
Anyway, I didn't mean to be rude or combative, I just wanted to point you in the right direction for future posts. It really does make life easier if the forum is well organized without multiple threads on the same subject.
Cheers.
One reason NOT to root now that I could think of:
Google IO is only few weeks from now (May 19-20), there they will most probably announce Froyo, Android 2.2.
It would be wise to wait what will come out.
APP2SD will be native if they include it in 2.2 (I [email protected]!).

No worries - I do know how to search and did. I find it somewhat over the top as it throws up 28 thousand snippets of information that you have to trawl through only to find it's out of date already - and for a non techie like me this leads to masses of confusion. I post the question to get the latest feedback, not stuff from 2 months ago ( also as posted it helps others too ).
1 reason is: it wipes your phone and you get a random other rom, which might have stuff missing you are used to.
sense for example is missing for sure.
This is the kind of thread where my sig really makes a lot of sense...

I agree the search facility is not the best on this forum and after searching for a few hours its easier to give up as i have normally lost the will to live by then.
and it's funny that there's an exact same thread right below this one.

Sense is only missing if you... pick a ROM that's missing Sense. That's a very silly and misleading thing to say.
The default rootedupdate.zip that's provided with the unlocking method is just the stock ROM with root; it still has Sense. Half the ROMs on XDA for the Desire still have Sense. Saying you lose Sense when you get root is just flat-out false.

Thats not on really, I did try the search before I added my post and I was easily able to find threads relating to this topic which is where this question should have been posted. Even the OP acknowledges the existence of other threads in the.. er... OP.
I added a note to the J-Zeus in case he/she felt my response was over zealous as upon re-reading it it does sound a little sarcastic and he/she has responded amicably. The thread has been moved since my post.
I have been using this forum ever since I got involved in hacking my XDAII (new account since then as lost my details) and the desire section is the messiest I've seen, I guess because this is the first iPhone killing android phone and has proven to be unbelievably popular. I was only trying to ensure this forum remains usable, ordered and collaborative.
What I said was in line with the forum rules, your response isn't.

Coolio!
BTW I don't know if you have spotted but there are 3 search tools on the forum. The one at the top between new posts and quick links is a...
'site:xda-developers.com <your term here>' Google search.
But once you are in a thread, at the top of the OP there is the option to 'search this thread' which may help out in some searches as it is, of course, limited to the current thread only.
In any given forum section, in the same position, there is the option to 'search this forum'

By no means guaranteed but hopefully! I am sure they will make it exclucive to the N1 for a while. Even if there is no official update I rather suspect it'll find it's way onto the device through the Devs here and else where.

IMO that would be very strage if Desire wont get Froyo and would be dated after two months.
But I have seen Google Nexus One with Desire's OS, which means we will be able to put Nexus One's or Magic's Froyo if it wont be offered officialy ?
Not trying to be a jerk, this is a sincere question. I really like my Tilt2 and don't want to get a newer phone with Droid on it. My phone is really, imo, built solid and has almost never failed to perform. I know it's a little heavy, but that doesn't bother me. I really would love to have a fully functional Droid that I could use. Mainly because I really don't like Apple and won't get an Iphone, even though I think the I-4 is a cool phone. Is there anything I can do as a forum member to help get this project further along? I was wondering if we could all maybe tackle 1 thing each and help out. Might not be anything I can do, but I'm willing to help if I can.

I don't think anyone can be sure that Android will ever be finished. The developers have done much for this device, but with the HD2 finally able to boot the Linux kernel, I think most of the support we had will move towards getting Android on better, newer, and more capable devices like the HD2. In addition, most of the remaining problems with getting Android completely working are the ones that were very difficult to begin with. Things like initializing hardware correctly, and figuring out how to get the various parts of the device to talk to each other. I'm honestly kind of doubtful that we will see more development with Android on the Pro2, since AFAIK only one person is working on it (though I hope I'm wrong).
it seemed at first that android for the touch pro would never work but now the only thing that doesnt work is the camera. maybe the touch pro 2 will get to that level some day. who knows.
So from what I gathered, the Tilt 2 won't be having any further development to work with Android? I also still have my Fuze. Is that development continuing? If so, maybe I will keep my Fuze instead of selling it and use it to test with Android?
By the way, what is the real name for the Tilt 2? Is it Rhodium or ?
Thanks guys, this place really ROXS!
I await your replies!

I'm not sure what you mean by complete. New builds are released all the time, etc. If you mean all hardware functioning, here is the list from Reefer's thread:
NOT WORKING IN THIS BUILD:
BT
Sound (in call mic and earpiece work, no ringtones or music)
Camera
Opengles: using software rendering for the time being.
Battery Meter
For sound, look here: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121743
One guy has made an NDISwrapper for Android...amazing.
For HW3D, look here: http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125379
Battery Meter is working very well. It's not accurate (seems like it's 10-15% off) but it shows low, which means you can get charged up in time with no problems. I also recall phhusson saying this WILL be 100% some day, it's just very tedious and time consuming, and everyone is more concerned with making things run better and on more hardware.
In other words, development is still very much active and some very smart people are working on these problems. I believe Mr. Steve Ballmer said it best here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zEQhhaJsU4
If you're patient, more of the pieces will come together soon enough and Android for our device will be more complete (relatively speaking). For the record, I'm very content with the state of things. All development from here is just icing on the cake
Mods, if I'm not supposed to link to outside forums, just delete them and/or let me know. That's just where the more technical info is.
i thought sound was fixed already today there was a new build for rhodium?.
i think sound just got added but not for music. I think they upgraded the sound in the earpiece and speaker works now.

This is also incorrect. TP2 development is moving along faster now than it has been in a while. Not everyone wants a HD2 just beacuse it can boot android. Sure it has a fancy screen but no hardware keyboard, so i'm not even considering it as an option for a new device. Also, for future reference there are quite a few more than just one person working on this...
Also, define finished? The OS itself is in constant development. Will Android itself ever be finished? I hope not.

ok, point taken. When will Android ever be fully functional on the Tilt 2 phone?
Now! Then! No, Then! When it's done. This isn't a native OS, don't go in expecting perfection. Go in expecting nothing and be amazed with every update. The alternative is to port it yourself. Good luck with that.

My initial question was pretty point blank. Don't expect perfection, just would like full functionality on my phone because I like the AnDroid OS. The question was never meant to be a gripe, not sure why it struck a chord with you. I don't know how to port it, so luck is not needed. Thanks anyway

Are you serious?!?! What you are asking is very disrespectful because You obviously haven't even read the FAQ/WIKI because it states:
5) When will the next release be out? I can't wait to get more features on my phone!
The next release will be out when the developers are able to get it ready. They are contributing their time for free and can't work on it full time. If you want to help speed development, make a donation to one of the main developers to help encourage them, don't pester them by asking a million times when the next release will be out when they won't know until it is ready.
hope this helps clear things up.

you didn't have a clue mmh ? what where you thinking ? that those people are well paid for doing it, and because of that your in position to come here and whine ?
and it's nothing about wearing hearts on sleeves, since it's only repeating the obvious like breaking in open doors.
however, I have some question :
Is it possible to have a feedback from some developer if it is a question of money to make things go further. if yes, what would it be approximately.
because, it is nice to encourage people to donate, but I didn't read anywhere from some person actually working on the project that it is indeed a question of money.
maybe this would be the first thing to find out ? from the developers side, is there anything that "non-aware" people can make to get things go further ?

Please excuse the question but I am a 4 month owner of a G2. Right before I bought the phone I startedlooking into the reviews for this phone which I ended up seeing things about modifying (rooting) the phone. I'm sorry to be asking aq question that may have been answered thousands of times but I do not want to act like I know what I'm talking about here. I'm in the construction business and use my phone for work and gradual personal use.
I am very intersted in modfying my phone to better suit me but I have no idea what each one of these different roots do. Are there any links out here that someone can guide me to in order to see the differences in these roots? I would like to know what each of them do in order to determine which root better suits me.
I appreciate any assistance you can offer out here. Thanks in advance.

The guide to rooting is fairly technical, but if you follow the steps (seriously, double check your typing before issuing commands), you'll be good to go. As far as the ROMs go, the list in the link I sent you is most of the more reputible ROMs and the links will take you to their threads which will detail the benefits, additions, etc. each ROM has.

It seems nowadays that these forums have become a total waste to anyone if you dont have the latest devices or what help with rooting them. Other than that there is no interest in sharing or helpinp others anymore. I have posts that were posted in various forums, some months ago already and have had absolutely no feedback on them.
What is the point of even posting anything anymore,if nobody out there is bothered to help with advice, sharing files, apk's,mods etc anymore. I am really disappointed that the community in general seems to have just given up on anything other than the latest and greatest.

The android phone market is a trap that many people fall into. Yesterday, we were buying smarthphones to make them last, and Xda was there to give these phones a second life. But today, people are buying phones because they MUST buy. It's become a fashion accessory, and this consumption pattern has affected the look of the forum. The world of new technologies no longer takes the time to live, unfortunately ...

I would like to point out something you may have missed, i could be mistaken. However, this is (my reply) is truly valid.
I have modded smart phones and devices, i usually follow tutorials, Even if i may seem invisible. With that said, yes the infrastructure of technology is to move forward and "keep up'. I believe you missed what xda-developers means.
You don't need to keep up with the trends, afterall it's a decision only you can make.
Maybe you would benefit from buying old devices, and creating your own design. Customised. Just like an artist paints a pucture, inspired by the souroudning.
Please understand that I'm just a menber as you, but using an alternative thought process of what's going on here. I am unbiased, so i basically sit on the fence with everything. But c'mon. I ported andoid 11 on an S2. Unstable, but thats why this place exists. You have provided valuable feedback. I agree on one side, but would never bite the hanf that feeds me. so to speak..
I believe in development and not destruction.
In your case, honestly. if you're happy with it, stick with it.

Thank you for your feedback. We are actively working on ways to promote more helping and sharing of content on XDA. If you have any ideas, would love to hear about them!
The issue I have seen over the years is that many people come on XDA looking for it to be a "help site". Many want something for free. But, in order to get, you should give. XDA is about sharing of mobile device knowledge.

Help whores... some too lazy or inept to do Google searches and take the time to sort it out.
After which they vanish*.
Problem with that is to use these devices effectively you must immerse yourself in them to some degree.
This site provides an effective platform to aid that learning curve whatever your end goal is.
Learning from others mistakes is always better than making them yourself...
Both Google and the manufacturers push OS's and hardware platforms in a self serving way which is many times in direct conflict with the end user's best interests. This site helps to provide workarounds for the many issues this creates.
Something for everyone is not a bad thing...

Yes,i agree with your statement. But of late, the help you speak of or learninm from others does not happen anymore. In my specific caseg have posted to various manufacturer forums asking for said help and advice and have got not one reply on any of those forums and topics in question.
Hence my saying that it seems to have become a place where if you dont have the newest available handsets etc,you wont get answers to your questions etc anymore because all the top developers are trying to keep up with the latest Android software releases and the latest camera etc technologies to take the collective community forward, but sadly it is to the detriment of the majority who cannot for whatever reason move forward with them and are stuck using older devices and then as a result dont get any feedback anymore on their questions etc.

Part the problem is the thread shows up once in the sea of other threads and quickly gets sunk to the bottom.
It's a busy site. Not sure what can be done expect bumping the thread every few days or whatever.
Separating the rooting, moding, new app threads from general questions might help... or just create more confusion. Probably do more harm than good.
(Edit) Personally I enjoy the cross exposure to other devices and platforms as it increases my knowledge/awareness base.
It's fascinating even if I don't always understand all of it.

Lot's of stuff for older devices has been covered. i.e. developers move on to latest devices, they develop, research, post etc. before moving on and at some point that device becomes an "older" device of which info/data already exists..
either way, cant expect everything to be covered as it's impossible. I was at that point once upon a time.. once i realized cant always rely on an experienced dev to be there to answer all my questions is when its great to research and learn on your own.. eventually stuff will become easy and you might have ppl asking u for help.. thats a positive thing about xda and the internet, theres endless knowledge out there if you are patient and willing to learn.

That, but also the fact that the technology has slowed down quite a bit. It was only a few years ago where most phones would begin to feel slightly sluggish on stock OS after a year of updates...Now? A relative of mine bought a mid range Motorola phone from 2019 and it's fast as can be, game wise it's decent too. The incentive to eek out more "oomph" isn't as high as it used to be - imo.
