I have had this phone going on a month now I would say this problem started about a week ago. The phone (not on the charger) just gets hot and the battery life dips tremendously. (The phone is stock unrooted) I used to be able to get at least 14 hours out of the phone with normal use and 3g on, now i get about 7 hours before i have to plug it up again. The phone can be in my pocket idle and I can feel it heating up, I have never had a device do this I am at a loss right now because the main reason I sold my evo was because of the rave reviews of the phones battery life and all of a sudden that is just gone. I tried searching the forum before posting and found nothing with regards to this problem, If there is another thread like this I do apologize it was simply overlooked.
Any suggestions??? Thanks in Advance.
Could just be a Los, try sending a text or making a phone call the next time it happens...
Usually when I have a ghost Los, my phone will heat up and the battery drops. If you can't send a text, go to your task manager and go to the RAM tab and clear memory. That usually helps, but if it doesn't work, just reboot.

I've had it happen to me once, I woke up one morning and it was hot and battery drained. I noticed it had the LOS circle up top so I attributed it to that..........It's only happen once thus far.
It's not LOS I have service I can call and send texts but the phone just gets hot as he'll and battery life gets destroyed. The thing is this started about a week ago and I have not installed anything new on the phone it just started doing this on it's own.
I would not say my phone gets "hot" but noticeably warmer especially when playing some games. To help with the battery drain I have underclocked and undervolted -25.
The Facebook app didn't seem to like my phone very much. After downloading it and going to bed I woke up with a hot phone. Uninstalled soon after and works fine now =]

I started to have this problem after flashing "Rogue" kernel with CWM
It was Fancy Widget (HTC style clock) I don't know why the conflict started in the past week because I've had fancy Widget since the day I got the phone. Thanks for the help guys really appreciated.

Greetings All!
This happened to me once. While phone was in pocket battery life nosedived and temperature skyrocketed. Wasn't LoS. Looked at running apps/services and saw that AP Mobile was running out of control. Which surprised me since I wasn't using the widget. So I froze it and the problem has not reoccurred. It was probably just a fluke but since I wasn't using it anyway it seemed like a no-brainer to hide it.
Cheers, Henri

Something that I have noticed is that every time I pull the battery for this problem when I restart the phone the keyboard is reverting from the Smart Keyboard Pro back to the standard Samsung keyboard. Is anyone else seeing this? Could this be related?
It has to be an app that's killing the cpu look on the first page under my original post Hyabusa1300 (thanks) gave me the advice that worked. Figure out which app is causing the issue and uninstall it.

Almost always a hot phone means it is doing something in the background. Defiantly check battery stats and see what is running

Hello guys,
Did any one of you experienced the same thing.
It happend to me for a second time,
While the phone is on charge to use it and this time i was using only the FB app to review some stories, when the phone became extremely hot from the back next to camera and also the display. And at the same time Led started blinking as crazy red&green.
Dont know which app u r using to measure this temperature but its definately not normal. Even when i play some HD games the phone did get so hot. Got worried.
Any experience or advice? Thanks

It can be rom or kernel related. Never had the blinking issue, but device also got hot. You can by try reflashing both, and systemtuner, free on playstore, is a good app.

LED blinking just simple humanity notifications that the phone is currently oveheats. All lithium variants battery wont charge under overheated condition as the itself is unstable..
For quick resolving, turn off wifi could be a quick solutions..
To dig into root-caused, you may wanna check any mis-behaving apps before suspecting kernel.
Well my phone is with the latest stock rom. Didnt flash any custom rom, even not rooted.
Also i was only on 3G internet, bt & wifi both off and also with sync off,
As i said at first post i was only checking through the FB app some stuff, and couldnt believe that FB app can overheat my phone such for less than 10 mins
You are right that the blinking is most probably notification for the overheating.
Did anyone know what is the maximum temp which the phone should not reach? On gaming for example when all the cores are using.

On gaming the phone goes to about 77 degrees, according to system tuner. It feels hottish, but not to bad. I once had it up to 88 degrees while playing with a weak signal. Have you looked at what is eating the power, yet?

FYI, My LED will blink while battery sensor catch up around 48C.
FB App is well known lousy and slow app but it probably not the cause, what we said was to check against faulty backgroud app for your problems and take a look on battery stat find out unusual battery drainage.

Don't worry, I've had the exact same thing happen to me before, but I think that was ROM related since the ROM was in very early stages of development. I do also remember waking up one day to HOX overheating (probs never got a chance to get into Deep Sleep). It was so hot, I thought the internal components had fried up. And yes, the Red and Green Notif Light blinking is definitely a sign for overheating. So I quickly changed the ROM and ever since that day, nothing's happened. But anyways, you did say it was the stock ROM so what I suggest you do is clear the processes and look carefully at when it specifically starts becoming warm. It could be an unstable app you might have installed. But then again, the kernel could be at fault. Probably setting the CPU at a clock speed it doesn't require.
Hope you get this sorted, good luck.
hi guys,
thanks for the replies ,
My HOX is 2 months old and I'm not feel ready yet for custom rom, in case something gets wrong.
I have better battery monitor installed, and so far the phone stays in ~90% deep sleep
no indicates for interrupting program while sleep.
so the problem I guess is really with the kernel , when the phone is awake and using some apps ..
but every time when i check the processes there is nothing "extra"
i didnt understand how you guys measure the phone temperatures.
Regards

Glad you listened and had a look at what is eating the battery. Its not always the obvious answer. Glad your phone is running normally and not dessert style?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Okay, so I am getting pretty bad battery drain whenever I use my phone. The phone goes into deep sleep just fine, and wakelocks don't seem to be an issue. Whenever I use any app though, the battery drains very quickly. Now obviously using the device will make the battery drain faster than it would when it's asleep, but I'm talking about losing 2-3% with only playing 2 minutes of Scrabble or checking a news feed for less than 3 minutes. My screen is on half brightness, but it's only been a week since this has really been noticeable.
I'm not sure if my battery is getting worse or something (although I try to not overcharge it and let it get to around 50% which I don't see why that would be an issue) or this is just an illusion and it's been happening the whole time.
Has anyone found any solutions or ideas to help conserve battery?
I'm stock, nonrooted, running the latest update. I never have any sync or push notifications active. I keep NFC on but I've had that on since day 1 and didn't seem to be an issue before. I restrict background data for the Play Store (tried that yesterday but didn't seem to help much), brightness is always around halfway, and I am using JuiceDefender pro. I have the Amazon App Store installed which I've considered to be an issue, but haven't seen many people complain about it recently and it doesn't seem to report anything on BetterBatteryStats.
Bump? =\
I've been experiencing the same problem as you recently. I'm going to backup and format EVERYTHING and odin back to stock and see if that'll help.
I have a feeling it has something to do with my SD card.

Hmm I didn't think of that. I have an SD card as well but I've had it for quite a while so I'm not positive if that's causing it.
Tell me if ODINing it back to stock actually does something. I believe that the battery itself may be causing the issues though, but I'm not sure.
...So there's only one other person which these issues? What am I doing wrong?
I hate to keep bumping this thread but I am literally only getting 3 hours of screen on time when I'm on airplane mode and am at 20% brightness.

For the moment, my battery seems to be doing better. The only reason I wiped out my SD card was because my phone started getting hot at the bottom when listening to music from my 32GB SD card, so I thought it was some sort of corrupt file my phone kept trying to read and drained the battery

A few days ago I decided to try out ktoon's kernel. I was getting horrible battery life and there is a distinct possibility I did not give it enough time to settle as some have said. One person suggested I get Better Battery Stats, but at the paid app part, I didn't bother and went back to stock kernel.
Since then I have found the thread here and installed it to see what was going on. Fully charged battery unplugged and left idle.. When I woke up I had 8 hours of time on the battery and 92% left.. I was happy with this... A quick game of Angry Birds Star Wars later, and I am down to 88%... Now it has been an hour and a few random things later (Angry Birds Seasons, uninstalling bloat via titanium backup) and I am down to 78%.. 10% gone in an hour?
I am just a bit on the very confused side. I was getting 18 hours or so of decently heavy use prior to flashing a custom kernel. Now, I could just be checking my phone more and not noticing it and causing some bias here, but I am at a loss. One member seems to think I have a hardware problem causing my battery drain and that I should replace my device, but I figure it doesn't hurt to seek a second opinion.
As for the ROM I am on, it is just the stock LJ7 with a few theme tweaks I have done and removed some bloat.
Perhaps I am just looking too deep assuming something is wrong..
EDIT: I just followed a tip by Naddict to stop Google Maps from reporting anything.. Hopefully that helps a bit..
Same I think I get good battery life randomly like for instance any ROM or kernel I try I get random battery life sometimes 10+ hours sometimes 7 or less and I do my best at optimizing my phone to save battery I switch brightness to zero no sync at all juice defender ultimate was also tried lol

Could you post kernel alarms. I mentioned the potential for SD issues basically it works this way. You have cached information that doesn't get wiped the program accesses it and basically because for instance the ktoonsez kernel contains newer linaro or the fact it's based on 4.12 those small difference make the cache potentially poisonous.... another example is corruption of the partition causing media scanner to basically endless loop another example network spoofer if it crashes while running corrupts dalvik and requires a wipe. Or your SD card it's failing. Just examples

Forgot to mention, when I wrote the OP, I had already switched back to stock kernel. Phone is plugged in charging atm, I'll have that screen shot for you in the morning if you still need it.
I can't complain with these results here... Since I did a few things when I got up, I lost 1%. But over night I only lost 7%
What am I doing wrong. 4 hours after a full charge and I'm at 28%. I used the phone for a total of an hour today between Facebook, YouTube and Internet browsing. Almost dead, WTF!! Please someone help me fix this. I have each frequency undervolted 115 MHz and its pretty stable. I also keep mobile data always off when not using it. So why is my battery life so horrible.

Any other g2 users having major battery issues? Sprint g2, some apps and bloatware frozen/removed. Rooted as well. Battery dropped 38 percent in 4 hours with little to no use. Location services are off. Shows that android operating system using around 40 percent. Any idea of what is causing this? So far, not loving the update and the issues its having.
Absolutely not... Quite the opposite. I'm on a custom ROM but I used ZV7 ZV8 & ZVA before with no issues. That's one great thing about the G2 is the Snap Dragon processors are great on the battery, a charge lasts a long time and the battery never gets hot even with constant tethering and heavy usage. You should try the Snap Dragon battery guru app in the play store at: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xiam.snapdragon.app which is great for saving juice. Or takes a couple days to get full effect cause it learns your patterns and stops apps from refreshing during times when you don't use them, cuts of WiFi and or data during times when you aren't using it. Also I'd check your battery usage stats and see what processes are draining it the most. Is most likely an app or 2 draining a lot of your battery, so the battery guru will stop that from happening during times that you don't use those apps.
Sent from my LS980 4G using Tapatalk
Its very common after a firmware update for a battery to go outta whack. It may be that you need to recalibrate it. After any firmware update its adviseable to so a factory reset at 100% battery level. Then use your phone normally till the battery dies and phone shuts down. Plug in the phone and let it charge to 100% while off. Turn it on, and use it till the batt dies again. Repeat charging to 100% with phone off.
That may solve your issue. Fully cycle the battery 2x.

Do a factory reset after OTA that might help or flash the ZVC.tot for a complete fresh install like I did.
Just an FYI Swype connect is a known battery killer for some its mentioned on their forums and it sometimes runs even when all connect features are blocked.
Another thing block location services when not needed it will save a nice amount of battery life.

I think its a problem with 4.4.2, google is fixing that in 4.4.3. Also make sure Sprint Connections Optimizer is really off.
The only issue I've seen is Bluetooth showing up under battery stats as being used at around 50-55% yesterday with a runtime of over a day. I'm thinking its just a reporting bug since I haven't used Bluetooth at all and I don't see a noticeable drop in battery but if it is using it I'd definitely like to curb it.

I get 7.5 hrs and 15% battery left at 50% Brightness, location and autosync drain battery a lot as I mentioned before. Also use task manager to autoblock Sprint apps and uncheck Sprint Connections Optimizer it eats battery, Lastly Swype connect runs even when online features are disabled and eats battery, there are many complaints about that on Swype forum as well.
Im mostly on WiFI and have full signal due to Airave (no LTE) so I guess that helps too. All those things add up, I'm sure you can achieve that screen time as well.

I don't have a solution but the same problem. I'm fine with it getting warm but it's getting really hot! It's great that we have kitkat but it's not all that stable yet.
Restarting seems to help temporarily. Feels like something gets stuck and then makes the CPU run extra stuff but I don't see anything with my wakelock analyzing apps...
When it is in "battery-eating-mode" even browsing or watching a video makes it run hot!
Generally it indicates that a file or service has become stuck, or hung. For me it's common for the Samsung.index.service to get stuck indexing a file and sometimes lasts 3 days before it's resolved.
You should use some kind of monitor to see whats causing it.
Gsam battery monitor does a good job of showing rogue apps, and battery and heat.
Also a CPU monitor is included in the debug/developer which can also show the culprit.

I quite upset about this now. I reset my device and still have the same problem. My tablet used to be excellent and had great battery life. Now Kitkat Haase it basically useless because the battery drains so fast.

Indexservice uses 30 percent of my battery. I read that happens if you have lots of pdfs on an external SD card, but for me that is the whole point of this device. If I just wanted to play games, watch videos and surf the Web I would've gotten an ipad. Really dissapointed with Samsung here. Did they not test the device before they released the update? Or do they clock out of their jobs and go home and use ipads?

Yeah the indexservice did the exact same to mine, Samsung were no help. Happened even when I put PDF's on internal storage.
I had no other choice but to root it and freeze the service with titanium backup, I really didn't want to, but I was left with no other choice.
As I had gone that far I also froze a bunch of other Samsung apps/services - I am so glad I did, the tab absolutely flys along now - feels like a different machine.
Root it, you won't be disappointed
Sony released a statement suggesting disabling the Google backup functions to improve battery life with kitkat Roms. If you don't need those maybe you wanna try that as well.
Settings/general/accounts and save&backup
It will likely fix itself after a few days. It happens on mine every few months for a day or two. Then it settles down and works normally. Same on all Samsung devices.
Has nothing to do with KitKat.

I did some testing with an app to check cpu frequency and here's what I found:
Sometimes the tablet goes into "fury mode". Which means that as soon as there is any task for the cpu however small it may be it drives all cores to max 1.9ghz and full speed. Which means even while I'm browsing or watching a video the tablet runs about as hot as when playing an intense 3D game. And with equally bad battery life.
Really bad performance/efficiency handling. Like now I've been browsing(chrome) for 30 min and it ate 15% battery life and it's extremely hot on the back where the cpu is. There aren't any special processes running I've checked with watchtower. Cpu load is not that high but frequency has been constant 1.9ghz max speed on all cores... need custom Kernel PLZ.
I have to say though this is not always the case. Sometimes after a restart or when it was laying around for a while this fury mode doesn't happen.
just rooted and froze indexiservice using titanium backup...hopefully this will help
Ok looks like everything is good now.
Rooted and used titanium backup to freeze all the stupid stuff that was causing the device to get super hot
