Hi.
Have you heard of UnBrickable Mod? It's a hardware modifiction which can be made to a working or bricked device that lets the device accept firmware over USB without using download mode. This special debug mode will allow a device to operate by booting from USB when powered off.
Here is a video demonstrating the use of this modification on a Samsung Captivate
From my research, it is theoretically possible to bring a similar mod to this platform.
Apparently this device is bricked quite frequently. I don't own one, but I'd like to help. I cannot gaurantee anything, but I'd like to work with a Qualcomm processor. Since this device is bricked quite frequently I'd like to put an offer here that can help out everyone. Once I've located the proper modification technique I will post it and everyone will have the information available for free.
I need a single device to work with. If anyone wishes to donate a dead or working device, please post up or contact me.
i don't think we had that many bricks...

This is actually the most frequently bricked new device of this generation. Considering that it's still on sale, that's saying alot. People are flashing Exynos based ROMs on this device and causing it to hard brick. The real flood starts once warranties expire.
You probly haven't heard much because people are returning their devices to T-Mobile under warranty. I've got an ethical solution which I wish to bring to this device.
I don't know if they deserve it. A lot of the time it's kids that are new to the scene and can't tell the difference between devices. They should read more, but still...

I think this would be a great idea for one major reason. It would allow the devs to get real crazy with out risk of making a paper weight. I for one am a huge fan of your work and love your captivate mod for when i acidently flashed firmware for my phone and not my bros =p. but that goes back to pay attention
Ive got a hard bricked phone pm me if you still need one.

I receive about 2 inquiries a day with hard bricked T989 devices. It's a solution that's definitely needed. I've gotten a lot of JTAG research on them and have the pinout for JTAG mapped. I'm working on the CPU side of supporting the device now. If you have one of these devices, JTAG and UnBrickableMOD should be considered very valuable to you...
did you get the phone? it does seem like the amount of people with bricked phones are rising
bump, 2 more posted bricks today
Hopefully you get a device, because then my phone (skyrocket, basically the same device with a LTE radio) would probably get it too.
Add me to the list Odin crashed in the very end of the flashing process. Now the phone won't even turn on.Ordered a jig,but i highly doubt it will do anything since it appears to be hard bricked.Oh well, back to the vibrant for now.Waiting for a solution.

I'm goign to bump this because we could really use an unbrickable mod. we have had 3 bricks so far developing CM9.

Hi everyone,
I made a stupid error last night and I flashed the wrong rom to my phone :S I flashed a AT&T ROM, now my phone won't turn ON at all tried all combination to go into download mode nothing happen. When I plug it to my computer it required a driver that I couldn't find. to make it worse I called T-mobile hoping that they will help me but they couldn't because I don't have a prove of purchase :S since I bought it from someone else.
Any idea what can I do ?
Yep, it's dead for good unless someone has figured out how to make/use a USB jig for the TMO SGS2... that's why we read before flashing roms.... it's never really a good idea to flash a rom from a different device anyway.
What a retarded mistake, seriously?
You go to flash a ROM but fail to even recognize that they are two totally different phones?
If you are that clueless you should not even be flashing ANYTHING

I doubt it'll come back to life without a USB jig. You can try calling T-Mobile for a replacement again and just tell them you need a warranty replacement...the person you were speaking to probably doesn't know that proof of purchase is not required. I've never had to show proof of purchase and always gotten my phones from somewhere other than tmobile, but I think that would be considered fraud in your case since its not really a mistake on the manufacturers part....
Does it boot up? if it doesn't boot at all you're golden. Just call in for a warranty replacement.

Yes, even if you do not have a proof of purchase, you can call Samsung directly and get it replaced.
Please remember this guy came here for help not to be criticized. I also know that when something like this happens, it's no fun and he's probably feeling bad enough as it is, so why add salt to injury?
Thank you for all your good replies, say what ever I'm retard or anything you want. I made a mistake ( because I didn't pay attention ). This is not the first time I flash a phone ( I flashed my previous Nexus one and flashed my HD7 ) and I previously flashed my Galaxy S II with BeastMod, I don't know how I missed it this time.
Thank you for the time that you wasted to tell me how retarded I am.
I ordered a USB jig last night and I'm waiting for it if it didn't work I'll send it to Samsung.

I can sort of understand what the OP did, I mean, it's the "even if I know it's not the right thing it's close enough and if I do it just right maybe it will work or I can make it work" thing. Haven't we all experienced this at one time or another? We learn from this stuff

I did it, not ashamed, it happens and I'm by no means new to the root and ROM game. Odin'd recovery and forgot to untick repartition. Same thing you got...Qualcomm high speed USB interface...this phone is way more sensitive in download mode than the vibrants are. So I brought mine back once for that then two more times for the screen.

My first two word in my post was " Stupid mistake" because I know that it's preventable...
There's no one among us who hasn't made some type of mistake at some point in life so lay off the guy.
Sue you might not make THIS particular mistake but that's aside from the point.
For him to meekly ask people for advice while openly admitting an error that he could've lied about or blamed on a made up entity and receive this brand of childish, elitist, holier than thou, insulting nonsense is an embarrassment to the rest of us.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993996
the guy posted a link to facebook with download links in there
eventually after I flashed the ROM I saw that he named the file for my phone:
Liquid JB v2.0 RC8 (D2TMO) but I flashed this one: Liquid JB v2.0 RC8 (D2ATT)
which is probably the AT&T version, first of all I wanna say to this DEV - thank you very much for not making this clear to everybody that you have different roms for 20 different phones on one spot, now my phone is bricked thanks to you, yea yea yea you flashing is your own responsibility but how you could not make this thing clear just take a look at his thread it doesn't say nowhere that the right rom for me is somewhere down there, I assumed that the link on the top is the newest for my phone.
My phone is dead now, it doesn't wanna turn on, it doesn't wanna go into download mode, it doesn't wanna go into recovery, please help.
Thank you in advice!

Hey buddy,
I don't wanna be the bearer of bad news, however, it looks like you may have bricked your phone by flashing two roms made for other phones...
Liquid JB v2.0 RC8 (HERCULES)*
SIZE: 93 MB
MD5: 467aa4c3894e444e649fd18e7f89b6ef
MAINDL: http://bit.ly/SPAkAc
This is the one that you should have flashed. The "codename" for our phone is Hercules, you picked two roms for phones codenamed D2TMO and D2ATT (Droid 2, maybe)
I'm sorry but this is completely your fault, not the devs. About 9 links down lies a big fat HERCULES in plain text.

So you just download the first link you saw when there were clearly loads of them? What kind of logic is that??? Sorry, but people like you shouldn't be rooting and flashing. I would have stopped and made a post in the original inquiring about which was the right download. Your phone is BRICKED. There's nothing you can do except get a warranty exchange from T-Mobile. It's a painless $5 fee and you'll get your new handset next day. Hope this was a lesson learned. READ READ READ. And when in doubt if you can't find your answer by reading, ASK.

Probably. But JTAG repair services are probably anywhere from $50 - $100 and a TMO warranty replacement is $25 though they will reimburse if you call and complain.
FYI... the D2TMO is the Galaxy S III for Tmobile.
I have been following the liquid jelly bean thread and I was amazed as to how many people bricked their phones by not knowing their devices code name..(Hercules) there is no difference between how the downloads are displayed and labeled in the Liquid jelly download page vs any other aosp based rom download page dont blame the developer or the OP ..just learn from it and move on

Yeah honestly I don't see why your so upset with the Dev, are you paying him money for the rom? Not paying attention to what your flashing IS your fault not his. The fact that you choose the first link download it, then flash means you either don't read or don't pay enough attention to what your doing.
Sorry you brick your phone hope you get it resolve but seriously learn from it and stop blaming other people for your mistakes.

Actually, no. The vast majority of people on XDA manage to download and flash the correct ROM's for their phones on a daily, for some hourly, basis. These people take the time to understand not only the process involved but also the consequences. You say there were many links and it was not clear which was correct for your phone? Well, why did you not ask? There is nothing wrong with taking whatever steps necessary to protect your $500 device. If you are unsure, ask. If you, for whatever reason, are afraid to ask, don't flash.
This mentality of not taking responsibility for one's own actions has permeated so much through society it should be labeled a virus. Next time, do the research that so many others do every day, ask the questions you need to ask and you'll avoid posts like the ones in this thread as well as the frustration of a damaged device.
Good luck to you.

OP could learn from you, brother.
T989, AOKP JB MS1 (KK nightly)
I don't mean to offend you or anything but you clearly downloaded a file and flashed it when it has ATT in its file name. The file is obviously for a AT&T phone and considering that you are rooted and got CWM installed on your phone you must atleast know something about your device. You should of learned that its called the "hercules" and that flashing something else would brick it. Most roms have hercules or the phone's name in the file name and that is a clear tell on how to fix it.
Lucky for you I did the same mistake except I downloaded the Galaxy S2 rom from CyanogenMod site and flashed it on my hercules (thinking all galaxys2's were the same) and then it got hard bricked. (My first attempt ever to install a rom yes I fail) but it was under the 20 day t-mobile exchange warranty and I got a brand new (not refurbished from the 1 year warranty) overnighted to me for free of charge. Your best bet would be to use the 20 day exchange if its new and the refurbished replacement if it isnt (normally cost 20$ for restocking fee, etc.) but thats good to get a phone back.
Okay, I have seen many post on hard brick and also seen the many suggestions. Tried all but it seems that I just have to bite the bullet and turn it in to either Sprint or Samsung. I loaded a international rootbox mod and hard bricked my phone. It recognize by my pc by the usb connection and assigning a com port. It dose not load the flash drives though. Odin dose not recognize the usb connection. I tried qubking777 methods(which seem to be used for only soft bricking), tried to put it every mode possible, and even removed the sd/battery then connect to usb. It gets a red led light for about a couple minutes but nothing in trying to flash via Odin. If anyone has anything new that I can try without jig/Jtag would be helpful. I have been claim to be a noobie at this from friend at work and know that the pc world is different from the smartphone world but some of the concepts are the same. That if you think the same way as I do. So please no crazy remarks that is any demeaning ways. I do have some experience with root and mods when I did this HTC EVO original.
Thanks

I've seen people report that they work. Never tried it myself, but thats just my 2 cents
@OP............have you read the numerous stickies, questions, threads, posts about what to flash and what not to flash? kennyglass123 and numerous others have made sticky threads about how to get started, what to do and not do after you root
Cmon dude, even though they may have the same name doesnt mean that software-wise theyre the same
I have an EVO 4G and an EVO shift 4G, but i dont go flashing roms between the two just because theyre similar
When you're doing this kind of system level, you need to know what you're getting yourself into, in the end you couldve just asked in the thread if it works for the sprint s3 or <insert carrier here> s3, and you wouldve gotten a "no"

The mentioning of me doing things to the EVO and talking about the same thing was saying that I am reading and not jumping into stuff i do not know about when working with the S3. Yes they have different ways of rooting and flashing what not but the technology and concepts are the same. The only thing have jumped into over my head was that I grabbed the international load of rootbox mod because there was no clear indication what mod was what from their website. Once I loaded that and reboot, now I am a bricked. I am just trying to see if there anything that I haven't tried yet. It seems that I have indications that the phone has not gone to far and I can do something. Maybe something that works the with bootloader to get it to a point to clear and flash a restore..
The technology is not the same either
The international version is GSM while the sprint variant is cdma, the international version is quadcore while the sprint one is not
Software wise, the partitions line up, but incorrectly
The boot partition on the sprint variant lines up with the misc partition on the international, and a couple other partitions line up incorrectly as well

Phones completely done dude. You can't do anything to recover it without getting it jtagged. You have no boot loader the partition for the kernel on the international S3 is the partition where our boot loader is stored so when you flashed that international rom it wiped your boot loader and wiped other important partitions

Thank you for pointing this out. The OP also gets defensive when it's pointed out. He uses all the wrong stuff but when he breaks it he finds the right section to seek help. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
he claims he is reading and not jumping into things, I guess he skipped over the word INTERNATIONAL as opposed to the one on this section SPRINT.
OP and as you wrote "please no crazy remarks" this and the others are not crazy it's just amazing how you did not find the right section to begin with but had no problem finding it now that you messed it up?

Yes I have been following this fourm for a while which lead me to the rootbox mod page in the first place and known where to paste certain threads. I don't even know why I thought there was some very intelligent people on here that are nothing but very disrespecting when someone is looking for just the slightest information. If any one wants a extra check by there chuck wagon meter, please point me in the right direction. Can't believe that I posted any thing here after seeing this stuff in other post. THANKS EVERYONE!
Johnboy you have to understand we get three or four of these every week from people who do not read and just flash away. They find a rom on the international thread and flash it. Voilà 600 dollar paperweight. Then they do fraud and claim hey don't know why their device doesn't work. Who pays all of us with the continued rise in cost on our device.
It's funny though how every single one of them find their way to the right place and forum when they mess-up their phone. Amazingly!
This is the best place and forum to find the right information about your device. Swallow up a little pride own up to that you made a bone head move, and move on and stick around. You will find lots of support.

Like my mamma always said. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothin! For some reason, i hear it in a southern accent. Even though I'm from upstate NY. These posts will never end. And insurance fraud claims will never end. Either way, the cost of our phones will rise.

Thanks edfunkycold, I do understand that this get a little redundant. This is not going to get me to swallow on a bone head move. It is determination to find a solution and help find a end this repeated cycle for everyone. Seeing other threads the phone dose respond to get a port assignment and is requesting for a driver install. So that is some of good sign. Everyone keep your eyes and ears open and I will be back with something. lol
Kudos to you Johnboy for powering on to find a solution. Good luck to you.

I'm going to save some time and update your status for you. As you'd see this imformation if you searched...
The drivers its requesting is the "QHSUSB_DLOAD" driver. Its basically a piece of hardware waiting for firmware to be loaded at a factory level. You will not talk to it with any software you currently own, hence the jtag requirement. Spent months hoping to do the same. You won't I promise. If I'm not mistaken even Samsung doesn't fix it in the state its in. I believe they send it to qualcomm, could be mistaken there tho so don't quote me on that. And props to edfunkycold for telling it like it is. Needs to be said and youll probably recieve an infraction now for not holding his hand and telling him it will be okay. Telling people the truth tends to get you in trouble on here.
I know that I am going to get plenty of flack for this but after a week in working this issue. I had given up and turn it in for new. Even after building a jig that did not do anything at all. I know the jig works because it sent the new phone into download mode immediately but it did not reset the flash counter. Sorry for not finding a fix or even had to turn my phone in. In my field it takes breaking something to make sure you never do it again. So now I know not do flash anything for the GS3 I9300 for the the Sprint model.

Man, you are wasting your time, get the damn thing JTAG, period. If you are looking for a free fix, it AIN'T happening....the international rom hard bricked...period.
BTW, being an IT guy, you should have known to read before applying....you are more knowledgeable than some of the noobs. And by your negative responses, it is for sure a tech reply!

IF ANYONE EVER GETS THIS IN DEVICE MANAGER......"QHSUSB_DLOAD"...it is hosed. Pay the 60.00 and get it over with.
And NO a jiig will NOT work!
now hit the THANKS button...heheh
I seen someone mention that
People have been labeling tw roms and aosp roms incorrectly,There have been an unusual amount of brick topics lately, anyone else wondering if we are dealing with standard "flashing" user error, or actual misleading info on certain roms . Many of the most novice to longtime xda members have even been bricking over the stupidist stuff.
This device t999 specifically
bricking this(any) phone by flashing an incorrect rom isnt that easy to be honest... plus the worst that can happen by flashing is usually a softbrick a.k.a bootloop. (unless your an idiot and you flash stuff from a different device)
i mean i may just be way too experienced after 8 years of hacking away at android, but its not simple to brick a phone. its usually caused by lack of attention. for example, most people dont even read the OP of roms threads the whole way. they just download and flash and come back and say "why doesnt this work?"
im also curious how many people actually tried to use ODIN to restore there phone before they proclaimed "hard brick"

I have literally 4.5 months of experience with Android and I feel the way you do so I think it's largely lack of paying attention or not doing the research and reading first. I've tried multiple ROMs on my phone and I've helped friends learn how to root and understand the process of installing ROMs and no one has had a brick yet.
If you jump out of an airplane without learning how to use your parachute what do you expect ?
The S3 most likely has a high number of bricks because it has a huge user-base - thus even if the proportions are the same as other devices there are more people by number who are trying things without knowing what they're doing and those people are going to end up with bricks.
I've certainly seen times when the ROM was to blame, but it's almost always not a hard brick. That's the chance you take with installing a custom ROM - sometimes there are bugs and stuff happens. If you can't accept that possibility don't flash.

ahh the userbase! thats a good one thanks for pointing it out. i also believe that users from other variants end up here and flash the incorrect rom by google-ing "roms for s3" and going to the first xda link they see. which may lead to flashing improper roms resulting in the $400 paper weight
999 times out of 1000 it's user error.

Yes user error is to blame nobody likes to search or even read for that matter
Reading fixes 99.999% of all common newb problems

If anyone hard bricks this device they deserve it. You literally almost have to intentionally try to brick in order to do so.
On another note... I haven't seen many brick threads with ppl that actually broke their devices
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Most brick threads I've seen lately are either softbricks, boot loops or not bricked at all, just errors from dirty flashing.

+1 i definitely agree with what you said. my friend searched on google "how to root galaxy s3" attempting to root her AT&T GS3, and almost ended up with a brick (she found an international s3 root method) had she not came and asked me first...phew that was close.
It's just called common sense, not many have it.
Most I have seen are soft breaks and user panics before either: clearing cachy and factory reset or Odin. They just jump straight to I have a break.

Google and XDA Premium have been my friend throughout my past few years with T-Mobile... since the days of my Behold, Memoir, Samsung Galaxy S 4g, and now my SGS3... I've found a great piece of mind in knowing I'm not a complete idiot, nor am I the first to screw something up.
And while I have made a few devices "boot-loop" from time to time, rooting is easy as pie. And if you happen to research before you do any job, you might learn a thing or two. I specifically love the threads (on any forum, not just here) where someone posts "READ CAREFULLY" followed by "DOWNLOAD LINK" and just two or three replies later, there has to be that one r-tard that asks "What do I do? Where's the download link? I'm so confused!". I want to piss in their coffee and break their mug over their face. Literacy is depleting; and there's little we can do about it.

Hilarious!
Things have gotten so much easier. My only brick was a g1 (HTC dream). Things were a lot trickier then. It had an IPL-initial program loader (bootloader) and an SPL-secondary program loader (radio). Some roms required the bootloader from the the HTC magic (mytouch3g). Not all dream radios were compatible with the magic bootloader. So you always flashed a magic compatible radio first then bootloader. One night when it was really late, I was repeating the flash I had already done I my own g1 but on my wife's g1 this time. I accidentally reversed the order and BOOM, hard brick. In that state, the ipl can't hand off to the spl. Only option was hardware jtag that hadn't been discovered yet.
She was pissed.

Remember when I rooted my first (lg optimus v) I thought with a recovery I could flash any Rom...thankfully I have learned otherwise and didn't have to learn by looking like an idiot.I came very close to flashing some random Rom probably from the evo4G
Fortunately laziness actually served me well lol

Hush little baby Dont say a word
Just Cuz you bricked doesn't make you a turd
Just Google or use the search feature
You'll find help for your ........................mistake.
Jk man, Google JTAG services. Won't link to websites or outside services cause I'm pretty sure that's frowned upon in our community.
Also, not going to coddle you:
You're in this mess because you didn't read carefully or didn't do the pleasurable, light research it takes to enhance you're device so no body is going to hold your hand through fixing it.
Its going to cost money to fix it.
Taking it to your carrier won't fix it unless you're some awesome liar and the Samsung employee that receives your device doesn't give poo about his employers rules and regulations.
Like I said Google/Bing/Yahoo (Lol), JTAG and you'll be fine.
Goodluck
