If your phone is branded, you have to wait for your network provider to release there version of the firmware. Only other way is to use flashtool to flash the 2.3.4 firmware.

That's what I did. Simple as can be. No AT&T bloat ware either. Just backup whatever games you want to keep from the AT&T rom first so you can reinstall them after flashing.

Your Japanese S0-01C
http://www.nttdocomo.com/pr/2011/001515.html
(Android 2.3.2; ja-jp; SonyEricssonSO-01C Build/3.0.D.2.79)
If you flash to non-japan firmware, you may not get your japanese specifc apps and features support. The Japan firmware is different from the worldwide firmware like HK, Europe, Americas and etc.

You should be fine flashing a different ROM on the SO-01C there would be afew changes in the information but technically it shouldn't matter. As the other user mentioned, each firmware has its region and market apps which are pre-installed on the firmware and when you flash they are on your phone but if you don't care for those, you can simply do it by using FLashTool.
Good Luck
thanks for your clearly reply, i'm not a Japanese, i'm just like the pink so i don't need any jp apps
can you tell me which 2.3.3 FW now is the best for arc (battery is the most i care)

[Q] Flash 2.3.2 Global>Root>OTA update?

Hello,
Has anyone tried to flash 2.3.2 global, root it, and is OTA available for 2.3.4?
Anyone taught of that?
I haven't tried yet cause is there any app to backup phone settings and phone memory? from SE?
I CONFIRM THIS WORKS + ROOT REMAIN
Regards
AFAIK, no OTA available yet for 2.3.4...
+ OTA for the update before this was only for HK and UK ( and Germany if i'm not mistaken ), no world generic or other region... so we might guess that the OTA 2.3.4 will take too much time to go for the firmware version of choice...
some guys already converted to HK version as it's the fastest one to update...
I had the Germany version and till yesterday evening there was no OTA update...
but now the phone is not working after upgrading to 2.3.4 and than downgrading back to 2.3.2 global and rooting it
I have seen a lot of people including myself had their phone ****ed up by downgrading 2.3.4 to 2.3.2 and root. I suggest you to wait till there is a solution for this problem.

I am tired of flashing my phone back and forth and getting really frustrated. So I went to SE, told them the phone was dead and play dumb. They gave me back the phone with a new motherboard. Now I am using 2.3.3 4.0.A.2.368 HK ROM
From 2.3.4 to 2.3.2/2.3.3, try this:
There is no problem with UK.184 -> Root and OTA to .368 (no need remove battery even).
Also no problem if I want 2.3.4 again, then I flash Nordic_Telia branded.238
-Tried two times already, cause I couldn't decied which one I wanted.
Hope it helps

Yes, it is available now OTA with Root (happy), but I want to argue about people calling it Generic_World firmware all the time here on xda, it is Nordic!
There is no World region firmware as far as I know?
well I flashed back to 2.3.2, rooted, and now I want to OTA, and can't connect to download ! says : impossible to download now, try later.
I don't know whats the problem now.
also the ota update is only 44mb.

Yes, same here, too many people trying and server is getting sad.
Keep pressing the update button a few times, it worked for me.
But now happy rooted 2.3.4 with locked bootloader.
Ps. Please stop calling it Generic_World though!

[Q] R800X 2.3.3 to 2.3.4???

Hey guys, I have a problem. I bought a Sony Xperia Play, the Verizon version on ebay and it works like a champ. But Its on 2.3.3 and I really want it on 2.3.4! The phone has no service so I cant update it to the 2.3.4 over the connection. Please, there must be a way to download the 2.3.4 update for the R800x version and flash it to the phone. And I need step my simple noob step instructions as to how to do this, if there's a way, because other forums that I have seen are far to complicated and doesn't explain in good detail. Thanks again

Trust us r800x users when we say you do not want 2.3.4. It sucks, stay with 2.3.3. Also, I'm certain that verizon scraped the update because they screwed it up so badly.(bad service, if any, no wifi, massive compatibility issue with apps, etc.) I myself went back to 2.3.3 because 2.3.4 was so bad.

It is highly recommended that you do not update to 2.3.4, as it has massive compatibility issues.
2.3.3 to 2.3.4
Is it really that bad? Because I thought it was good. Well is there a way for my phone to get the Time Scape ui on it, and for it to record 720p? I know the official update allowed he recording. Any help its greatly appreciated.
You could flash a custom rom.

Absolutely. Stay with 2.3.3 unless you are an advanced user and with to load a custom ROM.
What custom rom has 720p and a cool ui on top, like the official update offered?
Also, How on earth do you put the phone in fastboot, flash ''img'' files to it, and type commands into it. Im really confused as to how that works

actually there are some gsm based roms that work with cdma stock locked bootloader that just break phone functionality
(OP seems to have no service anyways...)
edit: like dark forest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1496076
Other options
Thought I would chime in here. Not sure why every one is hating on stock 2.3.4. Oh wait yea I do lol. Anyway if your not using the phone part itself instead of paying to unlock you could just root and try Gin2Ics. I know the theme works on stock 2.3.4 but the dialer and contacts are messed up and no service as well as battery stats being broke. There is also a 2.3.4 ftf file now in the dev section.
There is another thread in the dev section where they are trying to port some stuff to the vzw 2.3.4.
Okay, sorry for the late response guys, but I now have my bootloader unlocked!! Yes! Now, my final question is how do I get Timescape ui and all the SE goodness on my r800X? And I know I keepbringing it up, but can I get 720p record feature? Any rom that can offer that, Im cool.

uk firmware wanted

does anyone have a working link or file for generic uk firmware please cos all links ive tried don`t exist or have removed the file
Do you still need the ftf? I have one which is rootable but it's not uploaded anywhere. If you need it just tell me and I'll put it in my dropbox
yes please is it the official rollout firmware or has it been played about with..
I'm not sure how to differentiate between official firmware and something else but it's pretty legit. i think the only difference is that it's been made rootable. I'm pretty sure once you update it to to the latest firmware version everything will be reverted back to official. i'll upload it in a couple of hours because broadband is almost gone
nice one thank you
is there a rooted ics firmware cos fastboot doesn`t work on official ics so can`t seem to root
here you go!

[Q] Xperia S security question

I have a short question regarding the security in Android.
I have a Sony Xperia S device that was sold with Android 2.3.4, later I upgraded to 4.0.4 via Sony’s PC companion software. My employer claims that my Sony phone is more vulnerable than a Samsung Nexus which was shipped with 4.0.4 just because I have upgraded it from 2.3.4 to 4.0.4.
I have not rooted my phone or anything like that.
I would like to know if a device with 4.0.4 stock from the manufacturer is “safer” than a device that is upgraded from 2.3.4?
Such thing doesn't exist.

What thing?
Do you mean that the security is the same, regardless if I have upgraded it or if it was shipped with 4.0?
I do appreciate all feedback but if someone can provide more information, that would be really helpful when arguing with my IT-department.

No 1. It doesn't matter which Android version was installed when your phone was shipped. I bought Xperia S and it had 2.3.7 then i updated to 4.0.4 and will be upgrading to 4.1 soon when SONY provides the update.
No 2. So if some one is saying that the device security is vulnerable then they are completely wrong.
Lastly Post questions in the Q/A please. Not in General.
