wireless Tether question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock evo with the newest firmware update of the 4.51.651.1. I flashed the superuser and am using rooted apps. I searched the forum high and low for this and cannot find it. I need to see what version of wifi-tether to use. I have tried the newest beta and it fails to connect. I tried the latest stable and it fails. I cannot get a version that will allow me to connect with a stock rom. Is someone able to give me a heads up here?

[Q] CM7 App Questions

Just a quick question --
Would installing a CM7 ROM on a T-Mobile G2 (US) remove the WiFi Calling and Swype apps? If so, is there any way to restore them?
Wifi calling is still there but swype will be gone but you can go swype website get the beta its newer and better
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Thanks! Is the WiFi Calling included with CM7, then? Because if I'm not mistaken, to perm-root I'll need to downgrade from the OTA ROM, which would remove the WiFi app from my phone.

I'm pretty sure its included but, regardless, you'll still get the OTA once you are rooted. Run #*#*checkin*#*# to connect to the servers and you should get the OTA within a day.

What are you talking about? Taking an OTA will remove root assuming you're on a rooted stock 2.2 device, and not sure why you would be receiving an OTA anyways, the update is gonna be on his phone from the start if its new or even used at this point...
And if you flash CM7 there is no OTA... It's not even based on 2.2 (or distributed by T-mobile, for that matter), its 2.3. You just have what you flash and that's it until you update to a new version of the ROM or add features manually.
OP, there is no need to drop your OTA (or downgrade to remove the OTA) update in order to root, that is only an issue with the Desire Z, not the G2. You can successfully completely perm-root with the OTA (I've done it personally on 2 different OTA devices).
The WiFi calling included with CM7 is the same you get with the stock 2.2 ROM, and it works just fine from my experience. As stated by the 1st reply, Swype is in open beta, you can install it yourself.

just installed OMFBG and no internet connection?

I just installed a new Rom, OMFGB, version 2.3.2, baseband version 2.15.00.11.19, kernel verions, 2.6.35.10-cyanogenmod, rom version 1.1.1 and now i have no data connection, i can make calls but cannot connect to the market, internet or anything like that, can someone point me in the right direction as to what to get this working possibly? This is on a HTC Evo.
Thanks
Rockey
Can you link to this ROM?
Perhaps I am not keeping up-to-date on my acronyms, but I don't recognize that one.
Also helps to post in the same thread as the ROM you installed.
I may not have the answer, but that might help others who do.

What the hell is that? Where did you get it from? I have never heard of that rom.
its actually off of Rom manager, where it says to download rom and it was one of the choices and it was Gingerbread and i wanted to try it. Unfortunately that is all i tell you about it right now since i'm not able to get on the net.
Never downloaded it, but under wifi settings, and mobile data, is yours turned off?
That rom is for the droid incredible. Don't know why its on the evo download list. Maybe that's why it doesn't work.

I just confirmed, and he's correct, you should have read it more carefully.
You'll need to restore a previous backup or flash a rom meant for the EVO.

[Q] WiFi Tethering Not Working

I just got the Epic 4G Touch and I used QBKing77 How to Root the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch on EL29 and it works great, phone rooted flawlessly. Then I used his How to get free WiFi Hotspot on the Samsung Epic Touch 4G and it installed and starts up perfectly, however it does not show up on any of the wifi lists that are available (laptop, phone, computer) I tried changing some settings in the app, I can not figure out why either its not broadcasting or why its just not showing up on any list of networks.
Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Joe
If its giving you issues download FoxFi from the market or Wireless tether from google. Did you just go to the Apps section and download wifi tethering and flash it. Honestly its pretty straight forward, May I also suggest you just download a rom with it in it... Preferable not an ICS because if this is an issue for you, ICS can really mess your day up if not done right.
Go into Development and choose a rom from Blazer, Calkulin or any of those guys just please make sure its a Gingerbread rom(based on 2.3.x). They all have tether baked in already
Wifi tether requires Superuser right. Did you see the superuser permission being asked when you started wifi tether?
The easiest way is checking it from superuser app. Goto the app drawer and click on superuser. It will show you every applications that allowed to have superuser right.
If you do not see the superuser app, then there's something wrong with your rooting.

I just installed Clockworkmod but no ROM yet, waiting to see if I can get it to work as a "stand alone"
Thanks for the help

If you want to check Busybox is installed, check the link in here -
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/hacking-help/24081-how-do-i-know-if-i-have-busybox.html but if you are not familiar with all these steps, you'd better to get already rooted and busybox included roms.
you have to choose Samsung Galaxy Nexus CMDA on the Device Profile to work.
Hope it helps
Thanks for your help everyone, but thanks to QBKing77 all I had to do was get an older version of the wifi app and now it works perfectly
BIG THANKS TO QBKing77
Uninstall abd reinstall. Change its profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus(lte/cdma) and try again. I believe the Darkstar or MIJJZ Blend rom threads have links and further instructions.

try installing Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.6. I was able to use this on mine and my wife's epic touch's.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

[Q] Wifi-Tether no longer working on Stock 4.3 ROM?

I used the Wifi Tether app on 4.12 and after the upgrade I am no longer able to use the app to tether. After a while I got the Sprint Hotspot app working but I would rather use the Wifi Tether app to connect as it offers more control.
What could block the app from starting a hotspot?

give it some time, 4.3 is only a few weeks "old" here.

Code:

I know everyone here wants a free solution but if you're rooted and really need free WiFi tethering I got WiFi Tether Router from the Google Play store and it works great. It's two bucks but it's worth two bucks to me. Especially since I didn't install a custom recovery so I have no way to flash anything. This app just works with your rooted phone.
I remember all the headaches of getting TrevE working when I was in 4.1.2. Two bucks is worth the aggravation of not having to go through that again.

In case anyone has trouble getting this working, these are the settings I used, which were supplied by the developer:
For Samsung Galaxy S3 use this config:
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApda
Channel 1
Encryption wpa2-psk
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- UNCHECKED
"No Firmware Reload" <- UNCHECKED
Again, not free but for two bucks and no more headaches, it was well worth it for me.
Forgive me if this is answered somewhere else.. I can't find it.
If one were to use the stock hotspot app.. How would/does the carrier track hotspot usage? Additionally, is there a better app to use which prevents being tracked?
Thanks in advance.
I've posted this before but I caved in and bought WiFi Tether Router for two bucks - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
It works flawlessly on rooted 4.3 and is well worth it for two dollars. I know we all like free options but sometimes a cheap app is worth the investment. If you find a good modded wifi app you should probably make a donation to the developer anyway so call it even.
