I don't think you can open your Nat using the hotspot because you have to open your ports to have a open Nat. This is my opinion you might be able to though

Well on a router you would go to your pc then the router settings and it should be called port forwarding and just type in the ports you wanted open and if its udp or tcp and that would open your ports but not sure how to do it on a phone . When I tether to my Xbox I have a moderate Nat

Wouldn't matter if you were using PDANet, Sprint's $30/month wifi tether, or any other wifi tether, 3g data speeds on sprint are sporadic, with a minimum advertised of 600k/down and a max advertised speed of 1400k/down, if memory serves. A lot of times, especially in the busy hours of the day, your speeds will be much lower on 3g.
Forgot to mention your ping time and upstream will also affect your lag on gaming like this. You can use free apps like speedtest (With your wifi shut off) to test your 3G speeds,
which will report ping, downstream and upstream. In my area, I average 400-700ms ping times, which is over a half second, on off hours (4am-8am) I can get very low ping times and fast speeds, but during the day, I get crap ping, crap downstream, and crap upstream.

You cant use PDAnet on a ps3, as you need to install a client program on the ps3, which is impossible.
Like everyone else says, 3g is too slow to use to play online games. Even if sprint had decent 3g speeds (which it doesnt) the ping times to get to and from the tower and network are way to high, you will always have lag. If you had 4g coverage, it would be fast enough, but again, ping times would kill you compared to other people using cable modems.
thanks guys very informative
I play cod,bf with my ps3 online everyday on 3g with very few issues using stock cm7.1 tether. I'm not even in a very good area. I only get 1-2 bars out of 4 here at my house.
Having the Nat type open isn't super important anyway.

When I measured speed from speedest.net app on my evo with 4g on, I get between 3-4 mbps download speed - and web sites and such load very fast. But when I tether my evo with 4g on and measure the speed on my laptop, I get barely 0.2-0.3 mbps download - and watching streaming content of the laptop is useless - all it does is buffer forever.
Anyone know how to make this work?
Thanks!
No one has a clue?
What tether?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am speaking about the wireless tether app
The latest version?...ie, one off market?
Via EVO on XDA app...
I am using "2.0.5 pre 8" which came with Fresh 3.2.0.0
I'm using 2.0.5 Pre 9 and with 4G am not really doing any better than you...then again, on the phone it's slow as crap, too.
I don't think it's your wifi tether...i think it's the app giving you false readings. I used to use usb tether (before EViO went to a kernel that wouldn't support it) and the speeds weren't any better.
You can see if it works on your kernel and verify wired vs. wireless speeds...
Bumping because of the same issue
I get 8 to 10 mbit consistantly on my 4G on my speedtest app and transfer speeds when downloading files on to my phone.
However, with Wifi tether I can't get any higher then roughly 1.5 mbps on my laptop. I've tried different channels, different security settings, no security at all... etc.
I do suspect it's a software limitation because the app itself is meant to tether 1x/3g speeds, and 3G itself i'd say averages between 500kbit to 1.5mbit download speeds(I'm talking roughly... could be faster or slower).
So my guess is the developers haven't bothered with the coding to make it work well with faster connections. There's no reason it should be a hardware limitation because our wireless chips are G and N compatible. I've gotten speeds around 17mbps up and down on wifi on my evo.
I think you may be right, as I'm starting to hear from quite a few people that are thinking the same thing. Everyone has crazy speeds with the SpeedTest App, then are lucky to hit 1meg with the computer.
Can someone with the "correct" kernel test the wired tether speeds???
EDIT: Just tried Calk's EViO Beta which worked with wired tether and the speed is just as slow.
The question now is, does the Sprint HotSpot tether at 4G speeds? As I said before, Calk released a framework flash that allows the use of the HotSpot without it on your plan, but it won't work (for anyone) on 4G, and automatically kicks down to 3G...
Fixed the 4G issue!
This was posted by creator of wifi-tether as a possible fix, I tried it and it fixed our issue. I now get full 8mbps download via wifi tether.
To make sure things go smooth, I would make sure wifi tether is NOT running in the background
Go into terminal on phone or adb via computer:
adb shell
su
rm /data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh
Not sure why this fixes it, but not complaining

For some reason that seems to happen to a few people.
There was a thread that was saying that you may have better speeds if you use a proxy on the pc with proxy on the tether.
how do u use a proxy ? this is my 3rd Evo and they have all had this issue...my wifes does the same thing too...
If you open the settings of the wireless tether, scroll all the way down to lan setting, select a point, then in your broswer, go to lan settings, and input the same address.
i did that in my firefox and phone...no noticable difference in speed

3rd party tethering apps (ie, wifi tether, usb EasyTether, bluetooth tether) are not subjected to the 5GB Hot Spot Sprint limitation. The data used by these apps are seen as "phone data" which is unlimited, whereas Hot Spot data is limited to 5GB with overage charges/fees.
Am I right?
Plus... it's bad enough having the phone run on 4G now you want it to act like a wireless router transmitting over wifi to tether a laptop. HOT HOT HOT
I think 4G tethering is most efficient and "coolest" in temperature over USB Tethering. If you must tether wirelessly, then Bluetooth is probably better than wifi. Not as big of a battery drain.

I'm using v3-beta-6. I can connect using 4g, browsing websites and such. But for some reason, the down steam speeds are capped at ~0.7Mbs when I run a speed test. On my phone, I get 10Mbs down. I know its using 4g because the ping time is much lower and my upload stream is 1.5Mbs.
On 3g, i'm only getting .85 Mbs down and 0.5Mbs up

Meant to edit my 1st post and I quoted myself.. Wow I must be smoking some good ish!!!
I have Calk 2.8.1 which supports sprint 4g hotspot. But in reality, I can never get download speed past the 3g speed. Upload is fast but download seems to be capped to 3g speed a confirmed by other users. EasyTether blows them all away with 4g speed of 8-10 Mbps. But of course it is not wireless and does not support infra structure mode.
Here's what I did to get full 4g speed while tethering via wifi..
Go to market and install filter proxy..
Open application, enable it and remember port number (Default is 8000)
Start wifi tethering..
Setup proxy in your browser, point it to your phone's ip address and port 8000 (if you use default)
Do this for http, https and ftp..
And you are all set.. Test your speed.

I can't seem to find the exact app. Will this work with Sprint Hotspot WIFI tethering or just the 4G Android Wifi Tether.
I just tested Android WifiTether 3.1beta 6 and it seems to pass the full 4g speed to connected device. I am losing 10% or less in 5 tests.
Now that LTE has been accessible in my neighborhood Id like to try and play BF3 while on my tethered network.
However, Tmobile only allotted me 500 mb per month complementary. I still tether, but only with user agent switched.
Now when I go to play BF3, in battle log it says my computer must be windows vista or above. So its reading the user agent and not letting me play =[
any ideas?

I've had LTE in my area now for a month or so I would say. Used it the other day to tether my PS3 while I played Black Ops 2. Connection was great, NAT was open I believe, and my connection in the game was always green with 4 bars and zero lag. I eventually hit the free 500MB tethering limit with T-Mobile and upgraded to the 4GB option. It's good to have in a backup situation when the power goes out or I lose home internet.
If you're rooted you can try Wifi Tether:

Sorry for the late reply, i dont use wifo tether. Tried that and got some very strange cut outs when doing speed tests.
Usb tethering gives me constant speeds. I spent a good month toying with wifi tethering using different adapters and they all had the same results (even an expensive 5ghz 500mbps wireless ncard would give me inconsistent signal.)
I am rooted but didnt have the tethering mod installed until my 500 mb free ran out. Hoping that when it comes back next month i can try to play bf3 again.

occasionally i run short on bills, and broadband gets cut off.
lovely thing i found out how to do is, feed my mobile data into my home router.
i do this through laptop. pretty simple.
1: tether phone to computer
2: go into windows network settings.
3: click change adapter settings.
4: highlite your tether and your lan both. hold ctrl and click each of them.
5: right click and "Bridge Connection"
6: plug a lan cable from computer ethernet into line IN on router.
7: Wifi through whole house WITH ports for wired connections.
8: DANCE AND GIGGLE FOR SCREWING THE BIG CORPORATIONS!
quite useful if you have the unlimited lte like i do. i've used over 70 gb in a month before running everything.

of course it has. but there are always people who haven't heard about it.
i've never seen anything in here about it and it's incredibly useful with T Mo's unlimited 4g.
the lovely thing about the web is we all share. even reshare, to help fellow peeps.
of course, there are also drawbacks too.
for instance, people can be snippy and snide to amuse themselves.
but hey. take the good and the bad, right?
Thanks for this! I've heard of bridging, but never understood/never bothered to find out more about it. This could be useful.

Not sure about GPE ROM's.
I just got a Nexus 5 for my partner. Having problems getting it tethered.
Well for some reason my tethered data is hidden from my company laptop but not my personal desktop at home. How are you hiding your data? I tried the link you posted but I get an error when using the tethering app. And others in the thread say the same thing.
You can take action with this process for GS4...........
I bridge phone to router to get much greater distance than phone alone can manage.
There are some tutorials on how to use Windows laptop as a WiFi router on Google.you can usb tether, perhaps.
