best rom for this phone? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey just bought this phone for my wife. I do a lot of flashing on my phone(evo3d) and just wanted to get some opinions on the best rom for this phone. Also there appears to be many ways to root this phone as well. Couple things I'm looking for in a rom is the best battery life and easy to use. And which rooting method works best. Thanks so much everyone.

my vote goes to viper rom. a ice cream sandwich rom is soon approaching

The stock ROM. It's pretty much perfect as is, aside from the bloatware which can be removed once rooted.

Starburst is best
Sent from my SPH-D710

With the los issues I'd say keep stock, unless you like to hear your wife complain. With stock you can't be complained to. If it was for you, I'd recommend something else. Keep stock on your wife's phone until a fix for los rolls out.
Edit: Don't even root until the los fix, unless you're wife is into the modding process. Or have app data you need to transfer over.

try getting your feet wet with one of Strong Steve's ODEX ROM's to get the benefit of aftermarket but still being ODEX. Personally i am running Calk's ROM but you are in the same boat as the rest of us, too many good ROM's, not enough time.

Either stock with removed bloat or one of strongsteves odexed roms. They are fast. I am a believer in odexed roms. Always have been and this is the first phone that someone develops odex for.

My two cents, stay stock deodexed with bloat removed. And stock kernel, my phone never dies. And it is still crazy fast.
But if you want custom, definitely get ready to use ICS. Hopefully that will be here shortly.

I see people are saying remove bloat... How do go about doing this? Thanks.

Caulkin's ROM.
My battery is better, the performance is about the same, but my GPS is MUCH MUCH MUCH improved! So much that I can't say enough about it. I also seem to be getting better radio performance with 1.5a from anything else I've used. I work in a large building, and the oh-so important bathroom time is enhanced because I'm getting better connectivity... Our bathrooms could double as tornado shelters... Seriously! My Moment wouldn't even connect, and my Epic I would choke as well. This ROM makes reading articles on the internet or tapatalk actually doable.

I'm currently still using starburst, I'm thinking about going back to stock with the recent release from squishy.

I have been running absolutely amazingly doing this:
Stock EG 31 Tar
Automated Root
Calkulin E4GT 1.5a

CM6 was great for me until I bought a new phone, have you not tried?

Syndicated Ice Hands down.. ill put it against all your favorites in free memory, responsiveness, speed, battery and Function.
I dont like the theme so i got casino universal on it

both great roms.
viper rom and midnight are my first choice.... until ics! havent had a los yet using the clockwork repacked stock kernel!

Calkulin's #1 crazy speed and stable. Syndicated rom is very nice and smooth.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Calk's ROM for stability and battery life.

Calkulin's ROM, for sure.

I'll have to give the nod to Calkulin's ROM for sure... Tried Starburst and ICE and like Calk's the best...
I just wanted something smooth, fast and most importantly reliable... I also wanted longer battery life! That's exactly what I got with this ROM.

Calkulin's 1.5a rom. As others said, it's snappy, stable and provides excellent battery life

Yes, It's another one of these

I need a ROM that fulfills the following reqs:
Stable: Must be stable as this is for a non techie so... yeah
Fast: Better performance then the original ROM
Good battery life: This is a MUST
Clean: No crapware preinstalled
And preferably gingerbread although if froyo is better...
Thanks guys
For the best battery life and speed it will need to be froyo since devs don't have GB source to work with. I always like the Bonsai froyo ROMs. Google Bonsai android for their site. I am currently using Hurricane 1.6 Gingerbread Rom but you have to do some tricks to make it stable and keep it from rebooting randomly.

Exactly what i'm looking for also. Bump.
Yeah... That wont work.I need something that wont crash if you give it 8 espresso shots and wait a few hours.
So i need something stable.
Stick with froyo if you want the best chance at stability. Syndicate rom frozen 1.2 has always been old trusty for me and a lot of others. Be sure to flash a kernel immediately after the rom, as it does not include one. Urban regeneration is another good choice. You almost can't go wrong with any of the great froyo roms at this point. As kenny said, there are ways to make gb roms run fairly stable, but it takes a lot of effort.

You just read my mind. I was about to ask about syndicate ROM
I'll have to give it a try then.
Look into twilight and genocide kernel. There are a few others that will work well with it, I prefered genocide when I was running srf 1.2.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
acs 1.2 and genocide 2.0
This pair works pretty well, phone feels snappier and nothing strange occuring after about a week or two of solid use - battery is maybe a bit better but I'm charging whenever I can.

While there are always more obscure others you might want to find... if you're looking for the best, you can start with the most popular. Check out the top threads on the development forum and see what people are saying.

Well, since he didn't want to shill his own rom.. i'll sing it's praises.. randomrom phoenix 2.2 is awesome. super snappy, no freezes or crashing and does above average on battery life.
Simply AOSP 4.01 is also super fast, and very slimmed down. There are a decent number of options for Froyo roms that you should be happy with..
SRF 1.2 is my "trusty old axe" too... I like Twilight Zone kernel. Isn't there a fix out for the SU Binary issue with Genocide 2.0? I haven't tried it yet.
You can't go wrong with anything by Computerkid23 or Random, either...

You can get the ACS Syndicated Ice rom then flash the stock theme zip overtop it. That has everything you like and the stock theme.
What about this one???

Sorry I'm still learning myself.
I have tested out 3 different ROMs so just know that as I give you this bit of info.
The closest to stock experience would be PhantomHacker's StarBurst ROM.
If you want something with a few tweaks, (5 icon dock, 5 row app drawer, speed/power tweaks, etc.) I would recommend Calkulin's E4GT ROM.
If you want a full blown tweaked out experience, I would recommend viperboy's viperROM.
As far as my daily driver I am running Calkulin's E4GT ROM with Steady Hawkin's Rogue Stock Kernel since I haven't had any instances of LOS with that kernel.
Overall I would say that you should try out any ROM you want, worst case scenario, you don't like it and you can try another ROM. Another recommendation, try the ROM out for at least a week before you decide you don't like it, as it takes a while for everything to settle in.

And has anyone tried this one and get quadrant speeds like this with out overclocking and all bloatware gone extra from main ad well as governigs on main and modem extra for dl/ul extra???? Good battery life and accurate readings for battery extra and GPS ect.... was curious on the below rom vs others as well and opinions on each....
EpicAOSPmodv2.5.1
If the one above is Nora's fast w t non overclocked as the viper Tom i may go with that i would like to be able to adjust icons 3 4 or even a 5 row app draw.
.
I wouldn't make your ROM choice based on the highest Quadrant. You really have to try them out and see what works best on your phone. Quadrant is good to gauge the difference between setups on your device but what works well on one phone may not yield the same results on another. That being said...first photo is stock with nothing changed the second is overclocked to 1.6 with Tegrak on Strongsteve's blue ROM....

I ambit but nor wanting it overclocked either just a good stable fast rom tweaed ect... bust also able to overclock if i wish... also no bs bloatware no useless files ect...

Fave Rom

So instead of complaining about not having enough roms, I thought would be cool to see what people are using right now. I look through the development forum and see that some roms are a little outdated and have no new comments... but that doesnt mean they're not being used. I might try them out if you guys vouch for them. So lets here it! I'm running on Beastmod 2 v3.6. I love the dark menus and all around blueness =D
CM7 and Team kang, i switch between both!!
my layout
Beastmod2 3.0 with some ics goodness here and there
Just switched from from g2with desire z hboot rcmx3d. And I'm digging this phone phone ...3 days into it I like. Waiting from some new roms to try ..
I would say beastmod with jugs kernel has been the best for me stable and unbelievable battery life
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
@Audi..I've had mine for just a few days too. I like your setup..looks good.
@Milena..do you have a link to that kernel? Mine only has slightly better battery life than my nexus s so I'd like to try something different
Best rom?
Stock rooted with bloat froze and the stock kernel.
Somehow everything magically works and it gets great battery life. Best of all though, you don't gotta wait for updates cause the thing works already. Lol

Great thread to start!
I'm on juggs. I tried best mod but when he left xda I just went to jugs and stayed. essentially the same. I can't wait till cm7 works with no bugs.
Which brings me to this question,
I'm going to attempt to port the MexdroidMod from the G2 over to the sgs2.
Is our phone a hpdi device?

eagles blood until we can get a fully working stable cm9 in here

Are there any ROMs that actually work

Are there any stable e4gt roms that are better than stock ek02 with everything working cuz battery life is a poor trade off for working features in my opinion. Example if wimax is not working or tether to get more battery life whats the point

I am also not sure how to approach this. There are only a few roms that don't support wimax.. I suggest calkulins. It's my go to rom. I've heard starburst is pretty good too.. But in the future, please try to read a bit. maybe look at the roms that have a lot of view and/or comments. The OP of each thread will tell you just about everything you need to know.
IMO, there is no more stable custom ROM right now then UnNamed. If I wasn't so flash happy, I would stay with that but I'm changing ROMs every 2-3 days now...
But anyway, yeah UnNamed is the best ROM as far as stability is concerned.
Oh and I got over a day of moderate use from it. Don't believe me though, try it out!
Have not tried unamed yet

+1 for Calkulin's roms. Good battery life, stable, so far I have not encountered any issues.
I've been extremely pleased with Calkulin's ROM. I have tried unnamed (which I also like) but I prefer the 5 icon dock and 5x5 app drawer and undervolt/underclock scripts in Calkulin's.

MJHawaii is right.. UnNamed is a hell of a rom especially with a few tweaks added in. I am quite sure you will not find anyone unhappy with it. Also like mentioned before there is a whole development section of great roms. Just make sure when you try them all you do not restore data and flash all of them cleanly and not on top of each other.
For battery life on this phone may I recommend 200-800 since your phone can clearly handle it...
no offence, but either dont flash and stay on stock or there is always the good ol flip phones!

Got to agree with the previous poster that suggested you just stay on stock. I'd prefer not having to see posts/threads like this in the future....
For the record however, I've been happy with Calk's, Unnamed AND for quite a bit of time now (a whole month or so!) Blend is my current Daily and it is brilliant.
But you.... you stay on stock....

blazer is my daily driver.
i have not tried a single rom that has just flat out been unstable or unusable though; i steer clear of early/experimental builds, bust most of the roms in the dev section for this phone are pretty complete and comprehensive.
this is my first android device and initially i had trouble just rooting the thing, but thanks to xda's dev section my first flash was a piece of cake and i've had no issues or major complaints in 3 months of jumping rom to rom.
Just an observation. But your avatar shows you have at&t, shouldn't you be in a different section? This forum is for the Samsung epic 4g touch. Maybe thats why the roms aren't working. Unless you just havent updated your profile. (Im guilty of that as well)

Looking for a STABLE ROM for the Step Daughter

Was looking for some pointers on a STABLE ROM
Stability is the number one item of importance, rather than ICS or GB, but ICS is preferred for the camera options..
Currently the ET4G is at the stock OTA ICS build, but it is not even activated at this point.
My Step Daughter is using my EVO 4G, and as I upgraded my GF to the SGS3, I want to drop the EVO and move her to the ET4G.
No real rush, I told her it would be a week or two, I am just looking for a build that is super stable, as I wont get much chance to update and/or modify the build once I get it fully setup and give it to her.
Think I am best off using the rooted version of the Stock ICS FF18 ROM, with a modded kernel and just leaving it at that point?
Sadly, I have spent far to much time in the Epic section for my phone, and haven't had a chance to sort through all the builds here.
No need for extra themes, or fancy mods, just basic ICS will suffice, she couldn't tell the difference anyways.
I tried both Blazer and Calk's GB ROM, but both had stability issues here and there, and I was hoping for some tips to use with a new ICS build, now that the OTA is out.
Any advice for better stability than:
Stock ICS build
CWM recovery
Modded Kernel (AGAT's ?)
and just let it go at that?
Well for ICS I'm running M'ICS 1.1 its very stable. Also using agat 0.2.1 dirty kernel (safe) for extra speed and battery life. As for GB, calkulin or blazer roms are very stable as well. I got good battery life on both. Just make sure you read up and ask questions if you not sure. Happy flashing.

Me personally I'm using the deodexed stock rooted ROM with Agat's safe kernel & Phaker's placebo script, & it's been super smooth for me so far

I'm gonna stay away from themes and tweaks, unless I find I got no choice...
Been a big fan of Calk's for a long time, and tried both before my GF got her SGS3, just seemed to have a few more issues with Blazer, but most was with Facebook, and I feel it may have been a FB app issue, and I also think I am gonna stay with the EL29 modem, as the newer ones didnt seem to work as well.
I may just keep both on the internal SD, and create a nand backup of both one I get the the phone fully setup, and let her try both for a week or two and see what works best for her in the Baltimore area.
Yeah the EL29 modern works good for me in the dmv area.. I also been having success with ff18 in dc
