I'm scared should i keep my pre order with handtec? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a pre order that is supposed to ship on Wednesday but now after reading about the issue with the volume turning down on its own and that it might be a hardware problem it really scares me to keep my pre order since i am in canada and it would probably be a pain in the a$$ if samsung/google issued a recall.
What would you guys do?
Thanks
Kris

so far it looks like it is only affecting users that have SIM cards that use the 900MHz frequency band, so if you are with any of the following:
O2
Vodafone
giffgaff
Tesco Mobile
or any network that piggybacks on O2 or Vodafone frequencies
then you will have an issue.
if you're on Orange, 3 or T-Mobile, you should be fine.

Like i said i am in canada so i won't be using any of those, i will be using bell mobility and i am not sure what bands they use.

It should be OK then on Telstra's 850MHz NextG network. I'm not cancelling my order. Worst case scenario is selling it unopened on ebay if issue not solved within a week.

And on eBay you will probably make a profit

@OP...Also, you have to understand while reading forum sites, you are most likely to hear more complaints and issues than the "everythings great" thread. Im importing too, but no matter who, where and when you order there will always be a risk. Think positive and just enjoy your GN, dont be scared!

If you're in Canada, why not just wait a couple weeks and get it locally?
They're going to be selling a HSPA+ version in Canada.. Bell and Rogers are both going to get it..
http://www.intomobile.com/2011/11/14/bell-confirms-samsung-galaxy-nexus-early-december-release/
That way you'll be able to return it locally if you encounter a problem.
I certainly understand being impatient, but in your case it has already been announced for your carrier and should be available in the next 2-3 weeks..
Just something to think about.

Next G is 850 MHz but Telstra's 2G is 900 MHz (and also 1800 MHz but that is being phased out).
Next G coverage is pretty good but if you find yourself in an area with poor coverage you may drop back to 2G 900 MHz and get hit by SAV.

yup it only looks like it affects 900mhz. Im on fido which only uses 850 and 1900 so should be good!!!

Bummer, I just cancelled my Amazon pre-order for Handtec and changed from T-Mobile to GiffGaff...

Universal questions

Hi guys, i am getting a universal from the UK in about 2 weeks and i have some questions.
1. Is it unlockable yet?
2. Is bluetooth stable, not cutting off during calls and stuff?
3. Since it is WCDMA, does that mean i can use it with CDMA services here in the states like sprint and Verizon?
4. What is the best case for it
Thanks for reading my questions, you replies will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Obiesoft,
1. Not yet to my knowledge... Keep an eye on the 'universal' unlocker from this forum. An app that is updated over and over to add support for new phones.
2. Did not try yet, sorry, one of the other ones ?
3. Most likely not. UMTS here in Europe is on 2100 Mhz, as radio bands are of course regulated per country, you might want to see with your wireless provider if they a) use 'UMTS or WCDMA' as a standard, and b) if they also operate on the 2100 Mhz band. In the phone there is only one band available for UMTS connections.
GSM in general is provided in bigger cities in the states, you have to check which wireless provider has it in your area, some might even have the Qtek 9000 with an interesting price if you take one of their plans.
(T-Mobile) Be carefull nevertheless, the USA has GSM services on 1900 Mhz and on 850 Mhz, the Universal can do w/o a problem the 1900 Mhz band, but to my knowledge not the 850 Mhz band. You would be out of luck if your cellular provider only provides services on this band. Check also if you have to be a lot in rural areas, as far as I notices coverage there is way less on GSM systems.
4. I'm happy with the 'leatherishlike' one it comes with. Sleek, and it does protect it very well. Snug, just no belt-clip, that's all.
Hope you'll be having fun with your device ! (Well, all depends of course if you can get it either sim-unlocked or from one of your local providers...)
Willem
Thanks
Thanks for your reply
I hope there will be an unlocker soon, i have Tmobile here in Florida, i will call to find out of they use 1900 or 850Mhz. I will probably try asking Tmobile UK or something.
The reason for me asking if it will work with USA CDMA is that i also have an account with a CDMA provider so it would be cool if i could use two providers on one phone, probably switching between them.
I have a MDAIII with WM5 and the bluetooth does not work, keeps d/c so i hope this one stays on with the MDA PRO.

I know that T-Mobile Germany sells the device w/o SIMlock. Might be an option. The QTEK versions of the device come also w/o SIMlock. I don't know if T-Mobile Germany ships the device outside europe, you might want to have a look at http://www.expansys-usa.com, they have a Spanish version of the QTEK you can easily reflash to the WWE version, new and not locked for a whopping 1045 USD.
P.S. I have no commercial relation to either T-Mobile or Expansys and both links are provided only for informational purposes.
Obiesoft, I have PM'd you.
simlock
t-mobile.germany has no SimLock - that's right!
but they did a NETLock!! - you#ve got to pay 100-300 € to get it unlocked for other networks. If You know where to find Band-Information i can tell you if it supports yours.
Universal is not working on CDMA One/CDMA 2000/EVDO networks.
In US, it will work for voice calls and GPRS on the 1900 networks like T-Mobile US. You will have to wait for T-Mobile US to launch UMTS (WCDMA) as it is planned, but I'm not sure they will use the same bands as in Europe.
MDA PRO
I did not check here sooner, my girlfriend is in london and she got the MDA PRO since she just renewed her contract. I am guessing it will be locked cause she is just shipping it and i will get it next week. Tmobile UK said they can unlock it for 15 pounds and it will take 28 days, so in the mean time i am hoping there is another way for me to unlock it.

Buying TP2 from US to use in UK?

Hi, I have been looking at getting a TP2 in the UK but they seem to be gold dust at the moment (as evident by a few other posters here complaining that T-Mobile and O2 are currently not stocking the phone due to "similarity with iPhone, N97, etc".). Anyway I am thinking of buying it on eBay and as I might be heading to the states soon, I was thinking of getting the TP2 in the US, unlocked. But I am not sure if the networks are compatible for use on O2 network in the UK. Apologies in advance for the ingorance...! Any advice would be helpful. Cheers.
Go Vodafone. Far better customer service than o2. Was a loyal o2 customer for about 5 years and was sick of not being able to understand indian accents on customer support. Gave up went to vodafone, got TP2. Profit.
As for the bands I am unsure. Just my input about netwroks. Sorry if it wasnt what you wanted.
I believe that that T-Mobile US version is compatible and the AT&T Version (which isn't out yet) definitely is. None of the US versions have front cameras, though. You will also need to find someone with AT&T that will request the unlock code for you (unless you find it unlocked on eBay).
Thanks for your quick response!
I tried going via Vodafone but the TP2 is currently only available to business customers. And because I have only moved house last month they rejected my application (didn't pass their credit check, apparently, despite having not missed a single credit payment, ever, in my life...). They did say I can apply again in 3 months, but I don't think I can wait that long, as I've been eye-ing the TP2 for like 3 months, waiting for my O2 contract to end!
I hear that the TP2 in the states are getting a regular 3mm plug for audio, which is a plus, but loses the front camera... hmm, trade offs! But at the risk of them incompatibility... perhaps a UK version is in order...
http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/
there you go
yep go to MPD get a unlocked unbranded with a voda contract thats what i did £25 for the phone and 750 mins 250 text unlimited internet for £33 a month
Thirding MPD, 25 quid contract 18 months + web and walk.
Paid £50 for the phone. This gets a pristine unlocked oem phone which can be invaluable later on when the roms etc start coming out!
As far as the bands go- Im pretty sure you will be fine- if you have a look at this list:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/com...[0]=3478&phones[1]=2879&phones[2]=1590&area=2
It compares the Euro TP2 with the US touch pro and a sidekick (which should give a fair indication of what bands are used)
This site gives the bands and coverage for a load of networks over the pond so you should be able to check if you will get service:
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
The Tmobile US version will work with 2G in Europe but not 3G.
The Sprint, Verizon, and Telus ones will work with 2G and 3G. Though I don't know if you need to unlock it or not...

Thanks that is very helpful. I think I will follow the advice of others and go with MPD for a new contract. Thanks again everyone! I cant wait to get my hands on the TP2.
If you are calling them, persist in re-dialing - don't bother leaving a message - it's worth it.
I dealt with Lucy - excellent service.

When and where are you coming to the US? I have Euro version of phone and live in the US. If you buy US version you can not use 3G in ohter parts of the world. Same for Euro 3G can not be used in States. Maybe you can get US 3G version and then we can trade
If you come to New York City you can buy from store....mobilecityonline.com or at their actual store.

AT&T's HTC phones with 3G all have 2100MHz, I am sure the Tile 2 (Touch Pro 2 for AT&T) will also. This means it will work with European 3G as well as AT&T 3G.
I don't know about the AT&T version working in Europe. According to statements here and elsewhere the AT&T band, despite being classified as 2100mhz is slightly different from the rest of the world's 2100mhz bands, making it incompatible with them (I can't testify to this, it's just what I've read).

Thats the T-Mobile version with the different 2100MHz. It has 1700MHz and 2100MHz, one for download and one for uplink. The European 2100MHz is 2100MHz for both downlink and uplink. The 2100MHz included on AT&T handsets is the European 2100MHz and not the T-Mobile version (which is referred to as 1700MHz to get around confusion).
The T-Mobile version's specifications list 1700MHz/2100MHz. I do not know if they are referring only to their bands where one is downlink and one is uplink or if they mean 1700MHz (1700MHz/2100MHz) AND European 2100MHz. I would bet that it includes European 3G but I am not positive.
Sorry, my bad. I get those companies mixed up
Yes I have been worried about the whole slightly different band and therefore it may or may not work in Europe!
I am having trouble with phone contracts at the moment because I have just moved home so my credit rating is completely annhilated and it just takes too long for the credit company to sort it out. In the end I have used eBay and bought a Vodafone branded TP2. I am sticking with O2 simplicity SIM at the moment as a rolling 30 day contract. I've not had too much trouble with O2 customer service, I always seem to get non-Indian, English speaking folks, but retention line was unprepared to make any offer at all which baffled me!
Anyway, onto the exciting (and somewhat scary prospect!) of getting to grips with Hard SPL and custom Roms!
PS, sorry At0mAng I got your message too late! I was thinking of California.

is 850 only for edge or can it be for 3g too

I ask this question because att just put up new 850 mhz in my town and the press release says something about faster 3g speeds so im confused. If I buy a unbranded euro tp2 then would i get 3g?

No, you will only get edge. You either have to wait for AT&T to come out with it or import the Telstra (Aussie) version of the TP2. The Telstra has the 850 mhz 3G frequency in it but not the 1900 mhz 3G frequency that AT&T uses in a few large markets. Chicago, NY, San Fran... To have absolute full coverage of AT&T's 3G network you should wait for their (AT&T's) unit otherwise the Telstra version will work on 95%+ of AT&T's 3G network. By the end of the year all of AT&T's 3G network is supposed to be converted to the 850 mhz frequency. Hopefully that is not too confusing.
One last side note, the Aussie version is very expensive $650+ to import, if you believe what people are saying the AT&T no-contract version should retail under $500 before tax and might be cheaper.
I did import the Aussie Touch HD for the same reason, US 3G and it works great but I did have to pay a high price for it. Over $800 at the time and even after six months you are hard pressed to find one under $600 for a new one shipped.
Yup some of them are available on ebay right now.

Okay,Thanks
I'm conflicted because of Att new data plan that forces customers to pay $30 for data. I just cant see myself paying $60 for mobile internet between my wifes iphone and my tp2 since I have wifi at work and home. I was thinking of buying ATT for retail price but in the att forums there is confusing info because some say att can see what phone you have and bill you for thier data plan even if you buy it retail. So I was thinking of buying an unlocked unbranded one or the aussie one to save me the money in the long run $720 on a 2 year contract

Where can I get a Tilt2 in Canada (for use on Rogers)

Does anyone know where i can buy a Tilt2 here in Canada? I want the Tilt2 because it'll give me 3G speed on rogers whereas the TP2 from the UK won't
thanks

There are Tilt 2s on eBay now.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170394416368
Funny you can buy it on eBay before you can from AT&T...
make sure it is a t7381
that is the Australian model that supports Rogers 3G, HSPA
the north american ones do not, they are 7373 i believe
it needs to work on gprs 850 for use with rogers, otherwise all you get is edge
look for the australian telstra phones on ebay, i got mine from personal digital
enilkciw,
thanks for the ebay link.
goodpill,
thanks for that critical piece of info.
I actually own a HTC TP2 (purchased from the UK) and I'll i get is Edge speeds (just like you said). I'm looking to replace the one I have with one that supports 3G speeds (including simultaneous voice and data connectivity).
I assumed that since Rogers & AT&T share a common network that buying a Tilt2 would work on Rogers. Obviously i need to do much more research before buying a replacement.

this seems to be the case, although you don't get the front camera (you do get a big ATT logo instead!)... i am sure there are other differences but as mentioned for rogers you need 850 umts for 3G
good news for you is prices are already cheaper than a month ago when i bought mine
Ya u get a few at&t logos and have to deal with the keyboard. Software wise i dont care because i've already flashed a cooked rom, so all is good. I would definitely prefer an unbranded device but 3g and price are quite important to me
thanks for all the feedback. i also noticed TILT2s for sale on expansys.ca. I've used them before and know that they're reliable (in case anyone was wondering).

Pacific Mall
If you are in the Toronto area, you can also check out Pacific Mall. Caution, some of their vendors are questionable.
I bought the T-Mobile version, and I can not afford a data plan, so I'm good as far as 3G is concerned.

ya but 3G is not for data only. you'll also get better reception and voice quality. even if your not using data you want 3G. there are a few places down here (florida) where i would get no reception with an edge phone, but i'll get 3g reception

Newly released unlocked Lumia 900 works on Tmobile?

Already a thread about the 900 working on mobile. Plus that isn't newly released. Its just a Rogers version with a carrier unlock code
I think the question is, if/how well it will work on Tmobile.

Just spoke to the manager over at Negri, he says that the phone will not work on Tmobile's 3g/HSPA+ Network
EDIT: He changed his mind and said that it could and will let me try it on TMO. If it doesn't work he said I could send it back
Apply all updates first without inserting any sim card. Then once the phone has all updates try your TMO sim. It likely will not work. I tried many times to get a Rogers Nokia Lumia 900 to work with Mobilicity and it was futile. That was before the updates came out. I sold the phone well before that so don't have anything to test with.
Mobilicity works on same AWS 1700/2100 frequency that TMO has so I'm going to say it will not work. But hey.. no harm in giving it another go. Let us know how it works out. Make sure you can get your money back !
Yeah try it with the updates. The update is supposed to fix connectivity issues. I'm curious to know. I would have purchased one already to try on Tmobile but I can't until June when I'm back in the states.
It is to my understanding that unless Tmo changed in your are how it handles 3g and 4g you will be stuck with Edge. Tmo traditionally used UMTS 1700/2100. Tmo had announced that they where going to use 1900 for hspa+ (4G). If they did then you will be able to use Lumia with 4g and edge. Thats what I understand at least.

According to the Rogers 900 box, it has 1700/2100 HSPA/WCDMA band on the phone plus the Rogers version is a HSPA 42 device (ATT's is only HSPA21). I will give it a try and see what happens. I have screen shots of the online chat I had that said I could get all my money refunded if it didn't work on T-mobile. I won't get it until the end of the week
If it does have hspa 1700/2100 it should work yes. But why would they sell another device? Wouldn't it be cheaper to take the one they are already selling and unlock it and sell it as is? Regardless no specs on it.
Have you received the phone yet? any news?
Sorry, I have been swamped with final exams this week. I didn't receive the phone. Actually before it got shipped, the guys over at Negri tested the phone out with a Tmobile sim card and they only got edge speeds out of it. I told them to send it to me anyways. I figure worst case senario I can still sell this thing on Ebay (unlocked ones go for around $700-750) or let my girl friend use it (she's been dying to get out of her iPhone)
I've had my Roger's 900 for a week now unlocked and can only get Edge data speeds on Tmobile. I spoke to Roger's and Tmobile and they don't understand why. I think I'm going to sell on Ebay and wait for the Tmobile 900. I've confirmed that they are training employees on the 900 so it should be soon.

Because Tmo uses 1700/2100 and most unlocked phones do not run on that freq. Memory serves me right Rogers runs same freq as A&T so it won't be able to gt 3g, Maybe hsdpa+ IF Tmo is broadcasting it on 1900 but I doubt that.
Because it's LTE 1700/2100 not AWS 1700/2100. I wrote ths message back about a month ago. Check the Rogers Nokia Lumia 900 on Mobilicity posts.
