I have recently been getting notices to my Dinc about the update available for my phone. I have rooted my phone running 2.2 and have been very happy with how it works and the functionality I get from it...the only thing I dislike is that I can't do speech to text using my Bluetooth headset and I am able to deal with the poor battery life. If i update to this new 4.08.... will I lose my root control? I use my phone to tether my tablet and don't want to lose that...plus I don't want more bloat on my phone and don't really feel like trying to root my phone again if this update screws things up.
Is there a way I can prevent this update? What about stopping the reminder? Thanks in advance.

I got the update pushed to my phone yesterday and ever since there has been nothing but problems! First, the battery drains at a ridiculous rate. I unplugged it at 10:30 am and by 3:00 pm I was down to 60% without anything going on except 7 text messages. I can usually go 24 between charges. Second, the overall speed of the phone has slowed to a crawl. Web pages take forever to load, the app marked just hangs on the loading screen, and apps even take minuets just to open. Third, my phone randomly loses data connection. I cannot load any apps that require a data connection even when the wifi and 3G logo are showing with full bars. I get an error massage that says "connection failed" or "retry." it's so bad that when trying to sync notes or email my phone has the scroll wheel of death and freezes on that page. I've had the phone since thanksgiving and haven't done anything to it, its completely stock, I don't even know how to jailbreak it! I haven't had any issues whatsoever before I updated and now my phone is pretty much unusable. Is anyone else experiencing this? I need there to be an update to fix this update or for someone to tell me how to downgrade back to 2.3.4
You should try rooting and running an custom rom or kernel. I've received the ota as well but i immediately rooted afterwards. Im running the stock rom but using a custom, overclockable kernel, and its quick! Rooting is VERY easy on this particular phone & the instructions can be found here in the android development section of this phone model. Or you could simply just take the phone back and ***** to sprint about it and maybe they'll issue you a new unit.
I prefer not going to sprint at all simply because the only store with a repair center here where i live i worked at and it was terrible, but I need help. I want to know the simplest way to root and revert back to 100% out of the box stock if possible... If not i'll suck it up and go to the store

Do I need to root because this just shows him unrooting the phone?
You have been such a blessing! Thanks so much for being patient and dealing with my ignorance...
lol don't know yet.. but you are definitely more of a professional than I am so I am taking your word for it
I appreciate it. If I do encounter any problems I will let you know but so far so good. It's pretty easy to follow
It worked! Thanks again
Thanks! Being that I'm a pro now I will look into the whole rooting and flashing rooms. I even got the lingo down lol
Question though... Do I flash roms the same way as in the video or is there something different I have to do?
I am sure you guys have heard this one before.
BTW thanks again for all the help on rooting my GNex. I did it only for experience and being able to tether my N7 to my phone and it works pretty good. The Gnex crashes sometimes while tethering.
So being on 4.0.2 and rooted stock and on Verizon I noticed several months ago my OTA updates were not being verified and thus not being installed. I was hoping the problem would go away but it has not and now my Gnex is crashing, almost daily, re booting and bugging the heck out of me with that nagging window telling me there is an update available.
Please keep in mind that I really love the tethering on my unlimited data plan and would like to keep a way to do that.
So should I try to side load the update to get to 4.04 or go back to stock? and start over.
Thanks for all the help

Bump
Can anyone point me to a fix for this problem?
Hello all. I have my Note rooted with a custom recovery, but I have not flashed a rom. Well, I have flashed a few, but I've since gone back to stock and re-rooted because the bluetooth issues are a dealbreaker for me.
Here is the actual question. I've been getting a lot of updates from samsung. I came from an HTC Evo - and HTC rarely did updates. Has Samsung really released 3-4 updates in the last 2 weeks? Or is my phone just not properly installing them? The android version is 4.1.1, also not sure if this is all the way current. I just checked on the update your phone page in the system settings and it says I am current...
I'm running the same thing as you (stock, rooted with custom recovery) and I have not had an update recently. Mine is currently 4.1.1 as well, with the L900VPALJC build. I agree that it's the BT streaming that's keeping me from custom roms right now

I've had issues not only with A2DP, but also with call quality on BT as well. It sounds choppy and has TERRIBLE range on at least 3 different roms...Paranoid Android is awesome on our 5.5" screen, but I cant talk on the phone or use Slacker radio Hopefullt someone does a better job with the BT drivers sometime soon.
I imagine once the CM blue tooth problems are fixed the roms using it will get stepped up. I downloaded Macksrom today to run a trial to see how the improvements are. Though now that I know ADW isn't messing up my phone anymore I may just stick with stock for now. I have a current backup and I'm feeling bored, so I'll most likely **** around with it this weekend
I have a couple old verizon HTC Droid phones we no longer use as phones and was wondering if they could be turned into mini tablets capable of using our home wifi network and google play? It would be a good way to recycle theses and keep them in use. Ive been reading about rooting and the custom roms in the forums and was just wondering if this has been done before?
Flash paranoid android rom
If available
You should definitely root the phones, but I've upgraded to the galaxy nexus and have been using my incredible as a WiFi only device for the past few months. I'm rooted on CM7 (http://get.cm/get/3j) and ADW EX Launcher.
So far this is the best stuff that I've found to do without a data plan:
Run the WiFi only script found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217038
I use an app called Tablet Talk to transfer SMS from my gnex to my dinc over the same wifi network or via bluetooth. If you identify the dinc as a tablet in the app it works just fine. The app isn't optimized for such a small screen, but I've been in contact with with the developers and an update is due within the next few weeks that will fix the user interface.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apdroid.tabtalk&hl=en
You should be able to use Tablet Talk without being rooted, but the WiFi only script can't be run unless you have root access.
I'm interested in hearing what other people are doing with their wifi only dinc's...
Just inherited the dinc from my mom when she moved to the RAZR max. It is now my four year olds. That way he will leave my gs2 alone. Removed the dialer so 911 won't get random calls. Installed a bunch of kids games, locked play store down, installed go launcher and hid all the bloat in folders. Eventually I'll get around to rooting it and get rid of it all for real. For some reason the dinc doesn't like my cables and it keeps failing when I try to root.
Hello everyone, is there a way to stop getting the KK update notification everday? As you already know you only get 2 options, start downloading or postpone, you only get to postpone for 1 day max, I don't want to update yet because I use my SD card and also theter my internet connection, and also read some of the problems other users are experiencing with the rollout, I rather wait until May as another member has suggested.
Is there a way to turn it off or delay it longer than a day, say 1 or 2 months? I am running completely stock
Thanks!
AlexGT
You could download it, but not install it to stop the notification. I'm on it now, and it's a great update. Not much changed visually except the all white icons, but it runs a lot smoother. Not that it didn't run smooth before, but it's just better. You could alway install it, and root, to get the SD Card fix. I did that, and can use it like I did on JB.
