After flashing CM 7.0.3 a long time ago, I haven't really updated anything or touched anything when it comes to the recovery, SU, etc since.
Seeing ICS, I tried to flash CM 9 RC1 Build 2 the way I've flashed other ROMs before: Loading the ROM and gapps zip to the root of my SD card, rebooting into recovery, wiping phone, wiping cache, then applying a zip. When I try to flash CM9s zip, I get the error:
E:can't open sdcard/name_of_zip.zip (bad)
I've tried various CM9 mirrors with the same result. I have a feeling it might be because I have a much outdated recovery, and SU binary?
My ROM Manager: 5.0.0.8
My ClockworkMod Recovery: 3.0.0.5 (latest 5.0.2.7?)
My SU binary: 2.3.1-ef (latest 3.1.1?)
When trying to update my SU binary it fails when copying su to /system..
Can anyone give me a starting direction on what I need to do to get CM9 flashed and working?
Thank you!
Use the superwipe + 4ext 1st. or change ur recovery.
File sytem needs to be ext4 fore ICS onwards as far as i know.

You can run EliteMod and CM9 for example on an ext3 filesystem (the zip provided will format whichever filesystem to ext4 when done in the actual recovery).
Though I have not tried CM9 since beta13 I don't see this being a problem. Though I would advise doing a FULL WIPE (factory reset + cache + dalvik) before flashing on any brand new roms especially when going from GB to ICS.
(last time I checked clockworkmod doesn't let you format a specific filesystem or convert backups from ext3 to ext4 , for that I use the 4EXT recovery).
@ OP you should not have to copy the SU binary anywhere, it should come with CM9 anyways (just like busybox and superuser.apk). The only additional thing you may need to flash on top of it is google apps, just like CM7 would have been.

Worked like a charm! I installed 4EXT recovery, wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and CM9 installed just fine.
Thank you so much!
From my understanding formatting the /system partition through CWM will remove the android OS completely from your device and you would have to flash a new one to replace it. Found the following information on the below website:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...plained-boot-system-recovery-data-cache-misc/
/system
This partition basically contains the entire operating system, other than the kernel and the ramdisk. This includes the Android user interface as well as all the system applications that come pre-installed on the device. Wiping this partition will remove Android from the device without rendering it unbootable, and you will still be able to put the phone into recovery or bootloader mode to install a new ROM.
My question is, if I format the /system partition, does it remove all my currently saved pictures and videos on my internal memory? When I install a new ROM I typically wipe data /factory reset, then perform TDJs super wipe before installing the new ROM.
However, the instructions for installing the newest CM10 ROM also says to wipe /system partition. I know this will remove the OS, but will this also remove my pics and videos or should I back them up first before performing this step? Thanks.

Now i could be wrong as i am no Dev by any means but i do not think it will wipe your emmc as well. Reason i think it will be fine if you wipe /system is if you go in with root explorer and go to your /system folder your emmc is not located there so therefore if you were to wipe your /system patition it sould leave the emmc partition in tact.
But as always i would backup your emmc to your pc and give it a try. Hope this helps :good:

I was thinking the same thing as well but just had to ask because I have never processed the format /system action before. I am currently running a TW ROM ATM and looking through ES File Explorer my sdcard (which is the same as emmc on AOSP ROMs) isn't located located in the /system folder either.
Thanks for your reply, I tried to give you a thanks but I have reached my limit today

I'm no Dev either, but your right. Formatting system will not touch your emmc or sd cards. If you format system when flashing a new nightly (which I do every 3rd flash), you won't lose any user data at all. Only ROM and system apps, this is why you need to reflash Gapps as well if you format system.
When you use TDJ's wipe script, it formats everything (including system) except emmc and external sd cards.

Thanks so much, I run TDJ's wipe script with each install of a new ROM and completely didn't realize that is also wipes the /system partition. I just re-read his Superwipe thread and right in the OP it says
"This exceeds anything that CWM is capable of from the menu options. This will format and erase EVERYTHING on your /system, /data, /cache partions with EXT4 file system. It WILL NOT wipe SD CARD or EMMC... After it is complete with format and e****, it will align all disks partitions properly."
I was up extra early this morning, forgive me, I need to learn how to read better as well
Thanks again.
Remember guys, wiping doesn't wipe everything. However, not wiping everything can bring its own issues.
Sorry for bumping up an old thread but it was very relevant to this topic. If I wipe the system before flashing a new ROM will my apps remain intact with their data? I know system apps will be gone but they will come back anyway so it doesn't matter.

Yes, they will stay intact with a /system wipe. However, with a factory reset or /data wipe, your apps will be gone.

I had problems with wiping stuff on recovery, and I created these ZIPs with scripts to wipe my defy.
When I saw that others had problems wiping too, i thought that I could help by releasing these ZIPs.
Note: These zips do not push any files to any partitions, they just contain scripts run in recovery to perform desired task.
So, here they are:
FULL WIPER
-Wipes /system,/data,/cache
DO NOT REBOOT AFTER USING THIS OR YOU'LL NEED TO FLASH SBF
ext3 version
ext4 version
***********
CACHE WIPER
-Wipes /cache
ext3 version
ext4 version
***********
DATA & CACHE WIPER
-Wipes /cache and /data
ext3 version
ext4 version
Every zip can be found here : LINK
And please do not come to tell me that this is completely useless, if you can wipe normally, good 4 you
Nice one. it's faster than clicking all the CWM menu!
Can u add one that wipe dalvik and cache?

As far as I know, the dalvik cache is in the /cache partition, use cache wiper
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk 2
Works for me!
I love these, use them everytime! Cache wiping in custom recovery doesn't work for me either anymore... This is far easier than switching to stock recovery and then bla bla bla!
Absolutely agree! Great Job!
After full wipe and install CM10 i got boot loops on red Moto logo. Defy+ bl7

Uao why i didn't see this before? i really searched for something similar a lot! At last i will get rid of gapps that normal factory reset don't delete! thanks!!
Two questions: do you confirm full wiper does delete dalvik also?
And do these scripts still work now also with ext4 formatted partitions?

in the script data and cache is loaded as ext3 I don't know if it's formate it right, try it later and report, but u can easily rewrite the script to ext4 if it's needed.

thanks.. but I wouldn't know how to modify the script.. by the way I may use it with ext3 no problem.
also, I still don;t know how to check if my partitions are really ext3 or ext4.. so I think I will revert them to ext3 anyway.. (mount command show the driver used to mount the partitions, not the real format of the partitions.. and fstab I think is not fully reliable..)
congrats, your ass is now wiped.. I'm loving it!!
in op three links for download r given....so before flashing any new custom rom,i have to install these three zips in recovery....am i right or any other method???

Just flash the Full wipe zip before you flash custom rom, it will wipe everything and you'll have clean partitions and less bugs.
Be careful though, flash your rom after wipe zip. without rebooting. if you reboot, you'l' have to flash an sbf since /system got wiped.

question:
if I use full wiper ext4 version on ext3 partitions, will the partitions be formatted to ext4, or should I run ext4 full wiper only on already formatted ext4 partitions?
thanks for clarifying and sorry for stupid question

if I use old ext3 zip it don't formate it back to ext3 partition still is ext4 formate if I check it with mount command. and nether with ext3 or ext4 version, dalvik would never bee wiped for me.
Hi,
I have just noticed something and wanted to learn a few things.
It is possible to wipe /preload partition on CWM recoveries but not possible in TWRP ones. Still when wiped, the next CM or PA installation fails with the SIM card. However when I check this partition with a file manager it only shows what would be loaded on my internal memory IF I had a stock Samsung ROM. It contains the Samsung and S Note folders with some noting samples and the 10 pitcures and World of Wonders video..
What are they doing there and are they taking my phones user memory? Or why am I not having a healty ROM installation when I wipe that partition? Why is this partition there for actually? And last, why do I not get those folders sometimes after a clean Stock ROM installation?
Thanks..
P.S. I know there is a topic about it but it does not answer why my installation fails after wiping that partition and the question after that..
You've answered your question about the partitions purpose.
Can't replicate your case. I've wiped preload several times and never had any issues after, whether installing a stock ROM or AOSP one.

Hello everyone,
I am new here on Desire,
So I S-OFFed my desire,Flashed Custom CWM recovery,
My problem is,
Everytime i try to install a custom ROM,it shows me an error as "Installation aborted : status 0"..i tried to wipe /data,/system/cache,doing factory reset etc.none of them they helps.it always shows me this error.any solution?
Do the ROMs you are trying to install require an sdcard partition. Most do, and you'll need one anyway to install several apps.
- Flash 4EXT recovery.img using fastboot (better recovery, makes good partitions for desire unlike CWM)
- Backup and partition your sdcard using 4EXT recovery (max 2GB ext4 partition, no swap)
- Check md5sum of ROM.zip, to make sure you didnt get a bad download
- Full wipe and flash ROM.zip

Yh so like eddie said u will need to partition ur sdcard for that rom. Theres a good guide in desire general "how to partition sdcard correctly" follow that guide and then u can flash roms. The reason is that the desire has bad/low memory so the sdext partition is needed, definitly for sense roms.
