Does anyone else notice a creaking sound when you turn the phone to the back and press down on the lower right side (hump) across from the speaker? I just bought the phone on Thursday, so I'm wondering if I should try my luck with a new one or if this is normal. Everything else on the phone is flawless.
Yep, noticed it a few days ago, mostly when I hold the phone and or if you start twisting the phone slightly the bezel will creak.
I also use a D30 or whatever case on it, and it creaks within that too.
Gotta pay for lightness.
Nothing here. This is waaay more solid than any of my SGS4G's (wife and daughters have them), and more solid than the Vibrant I had, though HTC definitely makes a more solid feeling phone.
There is no creaking during normal use. I only hear it when I press on that area to produce it. During texting or playing games everything is fine. I'm OCD lol so I like to make sure everything is solid and there are no lose parts. It is def more solid than my HTC Sensation. I was just wondering if I should return it. I don't mind if creaking develops over time, but not when the phone is 3 days old.
no one else experiencing this?

There is a space between the cover and the phone. If your pressing down om the hump hard enough. You would make it creak it should not creak on normal use though.

yea i noticed that too i thought i was the only one lol, dont really hear it with the D3O case
I can't guarantee this will work, but in the past I have inserted a thin piece of paper under the back cover of my Vibrant to eliminate any creaking. Just make sure it does not cause the battery cover to bulge out. Tape on the back of the cover may work too as it helps to reduce the gap between the cover and the device.
During normal use the phone is rock solid. In fact, never had a phone felt so tightly held in place. I only get that sound when I purposely apply pressure to that area. I came on here to see if others have it because I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning the phone for another one that does the same thing.
I have this issue too!
Its very slight and intermittent but there enough to be annoying
Not happening on mine nor do i want to try it and see. Normal handling = no creaking. I have had mine since launch day

Based on all these posts I guess I am overreacting. The phone makes absolutely no sound during rigorous use. I even throw the phone on the car seat, bed and it has fallen on the carpet and makes no sound during use. It's only if I purposely apply a lot of pressure to that area. This phone is def the best I've ever had though. Much better than my sensation...

Okay here's the deal.. I currently have an HTC Desire, and I recently tried the SGSII.. My desire is a FREAKING TANK! I cant hurt it no matter what I do, including sending it flying across the room more times then I care to admit.. the glass has one tiny light scratch from when it spent a day in my pocket with my keys.. The SGSII on the other hand, I dropped it (rather gently) from my pocket the day I got it, and the case got a huge ugly gouge!
We've all seen the video of the guy taking his keys to the glass, which is what you should be able to do with any smartphone, but how does the actual case housing stand up? anyone got any stories of terrible incidents it survived unblemished?
I am hard on my phones.. I dont deny it, so I want something that will handle a beating and I'm kinda skeptical of Samsung after my experience with the SGSII.
P.S. my alternate is the Amaze
I too had a Desire and I have to say I am very pleased with the build quality of the GN. I can't say I've thrown my brand new phone across the room or even dropped it yet (I'm not the most accident prone) but it seems to be a sturdy piece of kit!

If you were unimpressed by the build quality/durability of the SGSII casing, not much is going to change with your feelings on the GN. Its built pretty much out of the same materials. You're best off sticking with an extra case if you get it.

Dropping it on carpet just proves that the screen/internals won't break from a hard fall. I think what OP is referring to in the case of his old SGSII is big gouges or scratches in the casing, which the GN will probably suffer from the same way.
I ordered this for good measure..lol

Yes I was referring to actually dropping it.. Every other week my desire gets knocked off the living room table, or the like. I don't actively throw it or go out of my way to be rough, but we have an active house, And things happen. I guess I'll have to look into a very slim case, as I usually just toss it in my Jeans front pocket And go.

Well there was that thread where a guy cracked his screen.
The bit that worried me was when a second guy posted his cracked too. He put it in his pocket as normal, got to work and the screen was cracked :/

Sounds like BS to me. There had to be something in his pocket putting a lot of pressure on the glass. And he must wear some skin tight jeans for that to happen... or something bashed his phone.
I always put my phones in my jeans pocket. OG Droid, and Nexus S. Always keep that pocket empty but my phone.
Figures; just 2 nights after buying my GN, i managed to shatter the screen.
The sad part is I don't even remember it happening. WAY TOO MUCH GIN LAST NIGHT. Anyway, It looks like i dropped it face down, or tweaked the phone. Idk.
I took my case off so that it would be easier to get the phone in and out of my pocket. Bad move.
Has anyone else pulled a smooth move and done this as well yet? I have a feeling the screen of the GN is going to be easy to break.
I had a similar story with my Droid Charge. Don't remember explicitly what happened and then the next thing I know the screen was broken...
I bought the GN and got insurance this time. Expensive lesson to learn... =(
Samsung really f'ed up on this phone. It feels so incredibly fragile like i'd be worried to squeeze it too hard or it'll break or something... so much flimsy plastic crap. especially the battery cover, what the hell is that!?...

Do me a favor and squeeze your phone right now... there is no way your going to break it. And I personally enjoy the back. If they had used another back the phone would be thicker. As far as the screen is concerned, go with zagg.

Honestly, I'm gonna have to agree.
GN seems pretty damn fragile at this point.
Being young, I've dropped many phones. My last phone, a BB Storm2 (I know, I know), just got dropped face down last week. Maximum result of damage? The corner of the screen chipped a tiny bit.
With how exposed the GN screen is, and even because it's curved...
Reiterating again, I will definitely be investing in cases for this phone. Anyone have experience with cases that come in and out of jeans pockets easily?
I would imagine if it was face down and pressed on it would easily crack.

I dropped it while hopping a wall earlier, not a scratch. It landed on the screen, but the contoured display worked.

Sorry, accidentally clicked thanks.
But what I was saying. I agree on the battery cover. As far as build quality, of the three phones I own (don't like selling them), the droid 1 feels like the most solidly built. It also feels the heaviest due to the keyboard. As far as the screen, it's glass. Glass breaks or shatters. If you want a screen that doesn't break, get a plastic screen or we could have thicker glass. I agree with the others on how it's dropped. I've dropped my Incredible a few times on pavement, even face down. The only thing that saved it was the lips on the case. The curved glass may contribute. Screen protectors will not really absorb the impact to prevent shattering or breakage.
Bulletproof glass on phones? Lol.
It doesn't feel much cheaper to me though I don't like the battery cover but it probably is related to being thinner than say HTC.
Damn!! I cry for you !! Good luck getting it repaired or replaced through samsung. I dropped my gnex waist down on a hardtop carpet, and surprisingly no scuffs or anything..
48 hours later, and I've got a chip in my glass! I had a ring thrown at me, I was sitting on a couch and my Nexus was face up on the couch itself but half covered by my shirt. The ring just happened to land on it and bounce off. Tiny chip, but I'm so frustrated with myself about it! I dropped my Desire a few times on concrete and all that happened was small dents, now the tiniest little ring knocks it and there you go. Annoyed that I didn't have it facing down, or in my pocket! I hate screen protectors, I prefer pouch cases so I can just put it in there as much as possible.
Going to go to the store I got it from tomorrow and hope to swap it for a brand new one... Wish me luck.

So let me get this straight.....you go get drunk, damage your phone, and don't even know what you did to damage it, and it's Samsung's fault because the phone seems fragile?! You don't even know what you did to it. For all you know, you might have pretended to be scoring a touchdown and spiked the phone down to the ground. I don't see how this has anything to do with the phone being fragile as much as it has to do with you not being able to care for your things.
So you got too drunk and broke your expensive new phone, what's the point of making a thread about it?
Try drinking less next weekend, when you lose control of your limbs and start breaking things that your body telling you something.

I just noticed that a slight bump will cause my S3 to turn off. Its not even that hard. Something has to be wrong with it. I am looking at the unit now with the battery removed. The gold contact pins all look to be even with each other and all take the same amount of force to depress. The battery contacts are clean, the battery itself is in almost perfect shape, not swollen at all and fits like a glove when inside.
I think I'm going to try and tape it in to prevent it from moving, because this is ridiculous its so easy to turn it off with a bump to the side...
I have my S3 in one of those gray cases from TMO and I am constantly tossing it on the the table, couch and my bed. I have never encountered the problem you speak of. If you are still within your 14 day grace period I would return it. If not you have a 1 yr warranty from Sammy.

Yeah... A toss onto carpeted floor didn't do anything.
Do you have a case on, in particular a TPU case?
My wife has a cheap(ish) TPU case on her S3, which is always my preferred case material but I've noticed the fit is kind of tight. Since the power button sticks out a bit, i think that this causes her power button to be way over sensitive and will cause occasional inadvertent power downs.
Bring it back to the store you bought it at and have them warranty exchange it.
The rep actually does say that it is sensitive to shock, and it's normal for that to happen. I thought it was the same thing til they told me that.

My mom's Gnote 2 on AT&T does this as well. Its annoying, but I think they all do this to some extent. If you take the battery door off it doesn't do it. But when you place the device to your ear for calls you can hear the creaking.
Mine used to be silent, but then with me taking it off and on a hundred times trying to figure out the wireless charging I think the tabs get a little worn and don't hold the cover in place as tightly as when new. Sucks, but I bet money a new battery cover will fix it. I just try not to pay attention. I know, that's not what we should have to do with a $650 device, but it is what it is (still the best phone on the market).
I chatted with Samsung asking if this was normal and he said no. I don't think the Galaxy S III had any creaking going on.

I got a flip cover, but it's hard to use the phone 1 handed... when you pull it out, you need to flip the flap without dropping the phone... and then it kinda hangs there uselessly unless you fold it behind the back which feels weird... I don't know, it looks sleek as heck, but more annoying than useful IMHO
In any case, I'm using my Nilkin case with my Note II and with that I don't hear any creaking because it's a hard shell case, actually makes the phone feel better in the hand (I swear Samsung wants us to drop the phone by making the largest, most unwieldy phone and then putting it into a glossy, plasticky and slippery frame. Sheesh, why can't they take a note from HTC and put some rubberized plastic on it? At least it'll be more scratch resistant.
My back cover and case creak, so annoying! Hope to see some replacement back covers with NFC soon to see if I can fix this...
figured out the issue, the bezel appears to be "loose"
even if it seems perfectly attached, try pushing it in towards the centre abit(so it exposes more glass), mine popped and the creaking is mostly gone.

Not a fault, as someone mentioned earlier the volume rocker is made of metal like the body and so cannot have such a snug fit as if it were plastic. So learn to live with it guys!

It's for this reason that there is a little play I believe. If I think about other machined parts such as on my Aprilia motorcycle there will be some kind of rubber bushing or shims to prevent play between the two machined parts. But with plastic such as my One X volume rocker, at first there was no play at all but after some time that changed and now it feels just as loose or wobbly as my new M8. I have the gel case on now so don't worry so much about the wobbly volume rocker :good:

I'll keep this one but if it stops working I'll send it back

I bought my phone last night. noticed it this morning that the volume rocker is a bit loose. it doesn't hang out or anything but it can move up and down (towards the front screen and back).
most annoying thing is when moving the phone around, you can hear the loose volume rocker.
=(
Confirmed this is definitely an issue.
Bought one today and it was quite loose. Went back to the store and checked the display model and it was the same.
Gent there opened up a new one and it was less loose so I took it for the moment but it seems to be getting more loose as I use it. Probably going to return again, but how many times before I get one that is correct and how do I know it will not develop the looseness...
edit: If you shake with any force it it actually rattles!
I've had the free case on it for most of the day and I haven't noticed the loose rocker
anyone planning to use a case will be fine, without one it would annoy me massively, especially the noise when tilting the phone..I don't think it's going to actually fall out though
my handsets are both from o2, both same issue so I don't see much point in sending it back again, I will contact them and see if they have had many returned
I seriously doubt it's meant to be this loose

this review actually mentions it rattling around horribly..perhaps this is why they give you a case in the box..would be good to know for sure to save people replacing the phone over and over again
The one sore point in the build quality is with the thin volume rocker, which rattles around horribly. It’s a particular shame seeing as the rocker can also double up as the camera shutter.

[QUOTED=lmw85;51600717]mine is very very loose, annoyingly so
looks like it's falling out and makes a rattling noise when touched
receiving a replacement soon hopefully wont have the same fault[/QUOTE]
Did you have to ship back first to get a replacement? Mine is super flimsy, but I'm lazy to have to swap back to a micro sim if I have to ship back first. I can hear the key move when I move the phone, even makes a noise when the phone vibrates.
