Soon or later WHT will need to do one of these things:
Upgrade to vBulletin 4
Move to IPB
Move to XenForo
What do you guys think about the future of XDA?
If I'm not mistaken, XDA already runs vB 4.
Nope, they run vBulletin 3.8.7

XDA runs vB3 right now, which is fairly obvious. There are many many sites running on vB3 without issues, and moving a site this size is a considerable challenge I don't imagine a move to any of the above. I'd certainly hope not IPB, which is the most over-rated system I've ever seen Behind the pretty frontage, it's not that user friendly for running...

XenForo is the best and most user friendly IMO, but it's lacking in a lot of places (add-ons, features, etc). I'm personally waiting for XenForo to mature to start my own forum. Wouldn't mind seeing this site move to XF sometime in the future though .
I m for VB4.
P.S.:I want to buy it for XDA^^

Lol. I believe XDA will have vB4... iPD uses it anyway
And unfortunately, reliability is key for the servers. While honest Joe, who rents space in a datacenter, may be cheap, he's not going to be the most reliable...
I am kidding about that btw, but it's not as easy as you think to just go buying servers round the world because they are cheap Considered data protection rules?
I bought it for a Forum!
It was really cheap: 159,99€ that's not expensive!
I suggest Drupal.
vBulletin is the best existing board, why moving to other? i don't like vbulletin 4 too.

I imported 1.6M posts from vB to xF and had no issues at all - in fact i was impressed by the lack of work that i needed to do... i think the db was around 4Gb and didnt have issues....
Since then i have ended up branching a lot of the site and i'm back down to 10K posts, however still performs well, even after heavy pruning of the db (you cam blame my host for that one!)

XenForo, by a mile. And its really not even that close...
As a manager of a VB forum from version 2 all the way up to version 4, having recently made the move to XenForo, I can wholeheartedly say we will never regret making the move from vBulletin to XenForo.
It is an absolute dream to work with and most importantly the users like it.
We moved a 9 year old vBulletin board with over 3 million posts to XenForo and I can't imagine now ever using anything else.
I'd be happy to provide advice be it technical or otherwise or answer more detailed questions.

This Petition aims to show the support for xda-developers.com's archive of 'ROM Images'
The Undersigned wish to notify Microsoft Corp. of their strong feelings against the recent demands to remove the 'ROM Images'. We feel that they bring more publicity and support to the 'Windows Mobile' platform and device: without this we feel they would not be as popular as they are to this date.

Have Microsoft been nagging xda-developers.com recently to stop with the cooking? Yet another thing that makes Android look more promising (are you listening, Microsoft?)
But that having been said, you gotta admit the policies here with respect to "warez" are borderline at best anyway. For example, I can't post a cab that would install voice command, but I can post a ROM that has it. I can't post a crack or a keygen for any number of apps, but I can post a ROM containing cracked copies...so well done that the end user doesn't even know he's running cracked software.
A lot of the time, we speak out of both sides of our mouths as a community here. I think some nagging and some C&D letters shouldn't surprise anyone.
omg. beartard is back!
Are they still harassing xda? I noticed this petition is from 1 1/2 years ago. I remember signing this last year, should I sign again? or does it only count once?
BOOOM
I will blow my dash up if they try to stop roms o and welcome back beartard

Well put man, after i read your post i decided to check out the price of some of the stuff on rom and stuff i have borrowed(cough) just for fun and it does cost a pretty penny for this stuff. I almost started feeling bad then i remembered wasting 50.00 on 2 programs that sucked, all better now lol. Either way the dash is becoming a thing of the past with all this fancy stuff coming out and we all have 6.1 anyways so if they took it away would it really matter? I have it downloaded on comp and on disk so im good to go haha

With Symbian going Open Source you would think they would play nice with those loyal to the MS Mobile platform.
Should there be a dedicated section where all xda-members can submit their stuff through a pre-defined form? Like with the following features:
Subcategories
for themes: WM 6.5, Titanium, Sense, WAD, Mobile Shell, lockscreen, boot animations, icons etc.
for ROMs: per device (every device gets its own subcategory)
Pre-defined fields, for example
compability (WM 5, 6, 6.5, 6.5.3)
resolution (QVGA, WVGA etc.)
CAB install (yes/no)
for ROMs: build, free RAM etc.
Filter by fields (for example only WM 6.5.3 and QVGA)
additionally presets for common devices, like WM 6.5 and WVGA for HD2 (already implemented in the current frontpage)
Rating system (which should not be placed in some drop-down nearly out of view like on the forums)
Sort by rating, views last x days, last update etc.
Featured entries which show up on front page
Provide file hosting space
I think you get the idea, it's vaguely similar to freewarepocketpc.net. The main benefit would be that it's a lot easier, especially for new people, to find the things they're looking for, and a forum thread isn't exactly the best and easiest-to-maintain way to show off your apps/themes/ROMs. Fields additionally ensure consistency among all posts.
Also, right now the more posts, the more attention a thread gets. This poses the problem that, for example, an app where many users post to report a problem gets more attention than another app where everything just works fine, as only a small minority bothers to post a "thank you". As almost no one rates threads (on the average there is less than one rating for 10,000 views) and even fewer people sort threads by views or rating, these apps (or themes or whatever) do not get the attention they deserve. With a rating system and the ability to sort by it, this problem could be solved.
Of course, the implementation of such a system could be somewhat challenging. I only want to hear what others think of this idea.
What do you think? Like the idea or not? Leave a comment and vote, thanks !

No seriously, good idea. The more active a post is, the more visitors it will get. Lots of good stuff after page 10 of the dev category aswell haha.
Yep, not only that but also the consistency and accessability, especially for new people, will be a great advantage. I also contacted svetius and he seems to like this idea, so I hope this will be done in the future. Thanks for your support guys!

We need to put this in our Sigs who has photoshop (He says to the theme designer )
I think it's a great idea - especially for noobies. I don't have developers skills but have learned much over the years just reading and browsing threads. Enough to even add some simplistic help here and there. But most people don't have time to look through many threads hoping to find some glitter of gold they are looking for. This might slow down the "Is there an app for this?" threads. Not everyone has time to just sit and browse but those of us who want to might not have so many uninformative threads to look at.
I would suggest a link to the initial thread where support could be given and all the "Thank you" responses kept in the new posting. And with all the needed information posted up front it might also stop all the "Will this work on my XXXX?
Hope it can happen!
That´s a great idea, I miss this database here..would help a lot!
A very good idea to have a database here & it's references!
yeah it would be great
We've gotten many requests for this, and it's clearly something we would like to do. There are two (obvious) issues:
1. Figuring out the best implementation method -- Can we somehow use Wordpress (which is what the portal runs on now)? If not, what CMS? Exactly how should the database be structured? That's not exactly a simple question given all the different permutations of devices/operating systems/resolutions that are supported by different software.
2. Figuring out how to keep it updated -- Do we rely on the devs to post their creations both in the forums and the database? Or do we have volunteers scan the forums daily to pull stuff into a app database? That sounds like a boring job . Anyway, we don't want to spend the time building something unless we have a sustainable and affordable model for keeping it going.
Anyway, if anyone is serious about helping us implement something (conceptual design, development, etc), send me a detailed PM. Or we can discuss it here.
As it is, this is definitely on my list to figure out, but there are also 5 or 6 other things (some front-end stuff like the forum re-design and other back-end server stuff). Plus to the extent all these projects have some cost, we like to spread them out.
1. I don't think WordPress, as a blogging tool, is suited for something like this. Drupal, with the module CCK, provides this kind of funtionality out of the box, and you won't need to worry about how the database is structured. Then we'd just need a custom theme (perhaps the same ones who are currently redesigning the forum).
2. If new things are only posted in the new section, then a forum thread with a summary, link etc. should be created automatically in the right subforum. So, threads will only be used for discussion, not for presentation.
For any further discussion of this idea, I'd like to suggest we keep it in this thread, so everyone can see it and comment.
Great idea! As already mentioned, I guess the maintenance/upkeep would be the sticking point.

Recently we've been the target (via PM and email) of a coordinated effort by some users to get XDA to add an iPhone forum. This intensified a bit recently with the "jailbreaking is legal" news that came out a few weeks ago. We also recently “lost” a behind-the-scenes guy at XDA to the iPhone (someone who had donated countless hours to helping with site development and bug fixes).
Despite his pleading, some of the mods and I decided earlier this month that xda-developers is NOT the place for detailed iPhone discussion. There's just too much going on here. XDA is still digesting the move to add non-HTC WinMo/Android devices. And the site is just too darn big already!
With all that said: many of you know that we also own the iPhone-Developers.com domain. It was purchased years ago—mostly as a joke. Now, with the maturation of the iPhone community (in particular, the independent developer and jailbreak community) we are going to dust it off and launch an XDA sister site. The goal is to try to replicate the XDA feel while keeping XDA itself free of iPhone-related clutter. We see it as a win/win for everyone (iPhone lovers and haters alike). The aim of the site is to demystify jailbreaking and to make iPhone development more mainstream. Millions of people have benefited from the development work that has taken place at XDA over the last decade, and we want to bring these same benefits to iPhone owners.
If you are excited by this move, please keep your expectations in check: The site will be totally separate from XDA (separate mods, servers, everything) and will probably be somewhat "Wild West" to start out (like XDA in the early years). We have assigned a new admin—the former XDA tech volunteer referenced above. His user name is Arbre, and he also is doing all the tech development for the site. He hopes to have it launched (at least in beta form) in September.
We are looking for a few people to help get things started in the new forums. If you’ve got any jailbreak/development experience on the iPhone and want to help out just PM Arbre and he’ll get in touch with you when we’re closer to a beta launch.
PM'd him already
Is there anyway to make a poll to see if anyone else is interested to the success of iphone-developers.com?

As the one who is actually building and running iphone-developers, I can tell you that for me it is definitely worth the effort. To even have the chance at creating something like xda for the iphone is incredibly exciting.
The only reason I got svetius and the site owners to consider this project in the first place was because of the number of requests we've gotten to add iphone forums -- it turns out a lot of xda users have iphones, and many have even switched altogether. Creating a new site for these people makes a lot of sense (to me at least).
Plus, as svetius said, there is really nothing to lose by trying. I'm the one bearing all of the work, and if you're not interested in apple products then xda will be the exact same as usual
-- Arbre
I'm just wondering if you are going to bridge the two sites together, so that registered on one is registered on the other etc.

I'm slowly porting my apps (adding some more bling) to the iPhone with flash CS5, only made a beta of flashlight so far, but was hopping for the greatness of a XDA forum-like to "bind" all scatered users out there, in a way that only XDA can.

There are of course many other iPhone sites around as indeed there are for WM / Android etc. Included in that there is also a range of good and poor quality. However, we often talk about our "Community" here at xda-devs and this combined with good quality content is what defines a good forum site. Creating, the right atmosphere combined with quality content is what will also make or break a new iPhone site. It really doesn't matter about the volume of other sites if you can create a better feel in a new site people will move.
We should also not forget that there has been a 200% rise in the smartphone market over the past year and 93% of that has come from the iPhone. Consequently there is a vast and ever increasing number of potential members who have not established a loyalty to already existing sites.
Good luck to Arbre in getting this going, though I'm sure he doesn't need it

It is defiantly possible, and several sites exist today that show off that ability. I am glad you are looking into the option, as that will boost the amount of people who are active there.
Looking forward to seeing this go live! Hopefully it will encompass the same community feel that XDA has nurtured and grown
Plus if XDA members who are interested in the iPhone also register with the IPD forum, we will bump into members with whom we may already be acquainted So we will have a ready made 'starting' community!

DATE: 15 NOV 2011 - of the article.
The Microsoft sales - DONT MEAN WINDOWS PHONE sales. Microsoft does 40,000 other things than Windows Phone. Windows Phone is new venture. Hope you are literate enough to know this.
Thus, showing me something 2 months old, means crap to me.
After that Nokia has launched Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 in India and USA and probably Hong Kong - not sure. Those are markets with huge numbers. Not UK! So wait and give me figure after 2 months.
I think we've gotta start a bounty thread to get you an Android phone. That's going to be well worth it that teaching you facts about Marketing, Sales and Corporate policies.

I decided to reply to Sinisters Moaning.
Old article so troll somewhere else...
Now for the more recent good news (and note Gartner is mentioned)

http://wmpoweruser.com/analysts-estimate-1-3-million-nokia-lumias-shipped-in-2011/
Those projections are certainly possible, but you have to bear in mind that they are based on what is known today. For example, no projections that were made two years ago gave Microsoft any hope of being more than a blip on the radar in the mobile space, because WP7 hadn't been unveiled yet. Similarly, no analysts making projections today can know what Apple or Google may or may not accomplish within the next 3 years.
So, while these projections should make people optimistic for the future of the OS, that optimism should be realistically cautious (as should any optimism for any of the major players - a lot can happen in three years).
LOL, while it might be from November 2011 (a few months ago) but the projections are still the same and won't get any better, well at least anytime soon; maybe like Microsoft it's self-predicted in 2015 or maybe even 2018 but as of now there is no way. I'm pretty sure that if you were too look up todays stats they would be no different at all. Don't get me wrong I'm with you guys in the sense that I would like to see MS succeed but they just don't get it. I have a WP and I honestly can say I do not know one other person who has one at all.
Guys as I have stated before, this is not to feed trolls or single out one person for their opinions, MS needs to listen to both sides, positive and negative. So don't take my personal comments to personal. With that being said let's see what this year will bring, hopefully I'm wrong but as a WP user I have the right to voice my opinion and will continue to do so until either MS gets it or the go bust whichever one comes first.

Thanks for posting, I took a look at those charts and they look like they are predicting the future; I wonder how they do that? Do they have some kind of crystal ball over a MS or something? How do they figure that they will even sale these may phones in the future? Maybe they are listening and changing stuff around, boy I really hope so.

My moaning is not directed towards you so that means I wasn't talking to you in perticular. My grips are with MS and I am just pointing out somethings is all and if you don't like it too bad simply ignore my coments, it's not that hard to do. I don't go around directing anger towards you when you make your coments or voice you opinons even if they are stupid or not because you have the right to just like I do. My grips are with MS and I am just pointing out somethings is all and if you don't like it too bad simply ignore my coments, it's not that hard to do. I don't go around directing anger towards you when you make your coments or voice you opinons even if they are stupid or not because you have the right to just like I do. Again if you don't like it, ignore it; I know I would.

oh no! What another blunder by MS, huge blunder. Now WP is so going to fail, a complete flop. I cant be bothered to wake up tomorrow. MS ruined my life. I'm thinking of jumping ships. This is utter BS by MS!

Honestly I can't stand IE9 in its desktop version. If it was as clean, light and intuitive as the mobile version then I'd go for it anyday, but right now the only browser with that simplicity and clean design (or at least it's close) is Chrome. I can't stand anything else.
Wooops, we're trolling and spamming this useful thread, shame on us

Actually IE9 is much cleaner with it's inbuilt contents filter. Have you tried it? It's tracking contents blocked thing. You can download simple 1 or 2 lists of adblockers and it becomes so much cleaner! You don't even need to run add ons on it! I din't realise it till someone tweeted this to me
Oh I'm such a troll!
I guess I'll give it another go then, trololol...
@sinister1
From your posts I see you as a big Windows Mobile fan. I understand if others think you're trolling on WP7 forums as 90% of your posts are pure negativity on WP7. I googled Windows Mobile for reviews and almost all of them were negative. WM was dissected and lambasted and all reviewers agreed on one thing - WM sucks.
Fast forward to WP7: it won three awards with mostly positive reviews from all major and reputable tech sites.
I understand your right to voice your opinions but stop preaching your hack and slash doctrine on what OS everybody should have...

So then maybe you should direct your venting where it might do the most good, a Microsoft support site for WP7. Most posters here either have something to contribute or are in discovery of various aspects of WP7 os. Pissing and moaning just doesn't play well in a forum dedicated to development. If you so need a phone that meets your every whim perhaps you should build it.

Hello,
I know this is a long shot but I'm here to ask it. What needs to be done to unlock the bootloader of this device, where would one start? Are there any manuals I'm able to read up on? Is it really a lost cause, if so why?

although I generally encourage tinkering on any and most all levels I think if you have to ask where to start in unlocking a bootloader, it will likely require more input then the output you would get in return. But thats just me. Plus I think the bootloader is secured using a key that only samsung, att, sprint, verizon etc.. have, But I suppose if you get that key you would be off to a good start. Good luck and godspeed!

I'm not necessarily interested in unlocking the bootloader myself, you're right I'm a bit out of my league when it comes to unlocking a bootloader. The key that's it's locked with is more what I'm interested in. I can't find too much info on the net about it, is it AES, SHA, RSA, Symmetric, Asymmetric?
That I do not know. I would guess it would be none of the above. Maybe some thing proprietary and kept uber safe/secret.

You've haven't seen any Samsung Note 8's with an unlocked bootloader. The only place that could be possible would be at the Samsung Headquarters itself. And even so, if there at Samsung Headquarters, the "KEY" would only be available to an extremely limited number of secure employees. Where did you say you saw one that was unlocked?
While ROOT has been established, thanks to a current member here on XDA Forums, currently, no one at this time has been able to unlock the Note 8 bootloader. Any attempts to do so would be a long shot of 1 out of a billion.

I'm confident you haven't misinterpreted my post as my intent was meant to provide positive, constructive, & supportive information. Congratulations on your accomplishments & achievements. Respectively & respectfully getting back on topic. In your post, you stated "Surprisingly, there are people who have the note 8 boatloader unlocked. I've have seen it with my own eyes." So my first question is where have you seen the Note 8 bootloader Unlocked & who had it unlocked?
Your other sentence thats confusing is where you stated "These guys obviously don't like to share, unless they get something out of it. He's givin me the tools and pointed me in the right direction." My second question is what guys are you referring to, and who gave you what tools?
If you would answer these two questions, I'm sure it would clean up any confusion in the thread.
