I am really ignorant in the ways of using an mhl adapter. I ordered an adapter and and hdmi cable. The adapter has a port on one end for plugging the hdmi cable into to. The other end has a micro usb that plugs into my phone. On the side of it is micro usb port. Do I need to plug a power source into that port on the side in order for it to work?

Yes it does need to be plugged into a power source.

Thanks for the info. That is what I thought.

Yeah man it's pretty lame. If the length of the HDMI doesn't limit movement (when playing games) then the power cable sure will haha.
I bought a good thick usb cable of the same length as my hdmi cable. my tv has both hdmi & usb ports so for now I'm a pretty happy camper. All I'm missing are bluetooth keyboard and mouse

I can confirm that the lapdock does indeed work as a hdmi monitor and usb mouse / keyboard, I had some spare time and tried it out.
*update*
I just spliced a USB A to a micro USB female, works great on my ps3. I just connected USB Rx Tx and ground, Don't bother connecting USB +5vdc red as it sends power up stream and may damage whatever your connecting it to.
here's a video of it in action.

I sent an email to sparkfun inquiring about a micro hdmi female breakout board and here's they're response:

Hi XXXX,
Thank you for your breakout board product suggestion. You bring up a great point about seeing this type of connection more and more. I will forward it on the appropriate people to see if this is something we can make and carry. Thank you again and have a great day!
Take care,
Pamela

Hopefully we see something from this.
great news!

It'd be awesome if you could post some pictures, such as a game console or camera
So far I just connected it to my laptop by holding it. I have an adapter I bought off dealextreme that converts micro female hdmi to full size hdmi. I had to file the female side down a bit but nothing more. If I can find my hdmi genderbender then I'll post it with my xbox360 or ps3. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/hdmi-male-to-micro-hdmi-female-adapter-converter-81206
that is awesome, a female micro hdmi to female hdmi cable is impossible to find I'm sure
What kind of usb slicing is involved?

What are you using the USB for for end-use? USB hub for the ps3?
I'm not familiar with the ps3

The lapdock keyboard and touchpad work just like a normal USB keyboard and mouse. I just used a ps3 as a good proof of concept. But it'll work on anything else that has HDMI / DVI and USB. I'm going to use mine as a cheap rack controller with a KVM.
@callen81, I see there are 2 HDMI to micro HDMI connectors on dealextreme. The one you've posted is $5, and the other one is $4.10. The cheaper one also has a smaller form factor. Maybe it'll fix without any modifications. Anyway, I just wanna ask is there any reason why you've decided to purchase the expensive one? Thanks!
Here is the link to the cheaper one.

Awesome find callen81!
If I get a "Gold Plated HDMI Female to HDMI Female Adapter/Converter" (search on dealextreme) coupled with the HDMI Male to Micro HDMI Female Adapter, I should be good to go right?
@callen81: Out of curiosity do you happen to have Rock Band 2 with a Rock Band 2 Guitar? If so, I'd love for you to run the auto-calibration test on the Laptop monitor and let us know what the Video Response Time is (aka input lag). If it's under 16.6ms, then it is considered sub 1 frame lag. If you don't have this, I'll do this test myself when I get my Laptop monitor up and running and report back!

I don't have Rock Band, that HDMI micro female to HDMI male looks identical to the one I have. Looks just to be cheaper? As well I just used a hdmi female to female gender bender for a wall plate and it seems to have worked fine. A HDMI extension cable would probably be ideal.
Where did you get the female micro usb as well? FRom video it looks like the hdmi adapter takes up almost all the room so I am just wondering how hard is it to fit them plugged in at same time
Is there anyway to make an extender (female to male) for both the HDMI and USB connections? I would love to be able to use my atrix as a webcam for skype or goggle talk since the screen blocks the view of the phone when the lapdock screen is up.

I had to file both the hdmi and micro usb female plugs down a bit, far as an extension cable for the atrix itself it wouldn't work as more then usb data is sent though the usb plug.
Mac Mini?
All the more reason to pick up the dock while its being sold for $50 on ATT.
Someone should connect this to a Mac Mini and you would have your very own PAAH (Portable as Hell Hackintosh)

You should look at the pandaboards, full opmap4 dev board with hdmi.
I plan on doing the same thing.
Ordered two of the link below thanks to your testing.
hxxp://wwx.sparkfun.com/products/9614
Plan on soldering them together to make a clean adapter. (Without the +5v connected, or with to power a beagleboard using the OTG port)
Had to de-link the post b/c I'm a "new" poster... long time lurker though
The new MHL adapter for the Galaxy S III supports both HDMI and USB OTG simultaneously, according to this article:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/29/galaxy-s-iii-new-mhl-connector-also-enables-usb-on-go/
I'm wondering if this means it could be used for USB OTG with a flash drive while charging the phone at the same time--something that's impossible with current adapters and cables. And does it also work with the Galaxy Nexus? Does anyone happen to have the adapter and a GN to test this?

My friend has an S3 and I know the 5 pin MHL adapter we use doesn't work with his because of the pin configuration, so I would assume if he can't get HDMI out using the 5pin, we won't be able to get HDMI out using the 11pin. Of course I am only guessing, but it makes sense to my mind.
I don't see how it could work, to use the HDMI out you need the charger cable plugged in to the MHL adaptor. So where would the OTG cable go?

Looks to me like the standard S3 MHL adapter has a micro USB "charging port". Could be that it could also accept an external drive. I don't have the phone or the cable yet, so I can't test. Maybe somebody who has both could post results?
it's not actually a charging port, it's a power port because apparently it needs more power to output HDMI, i.e. if you don't have the charger plugged in to the vacant port, no HDMI.
Samsung does sell a bunch of dual head micro usb to usb cables.... so maybe you need one of those and they sell this: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ET-R205UBEGSTA which says it allows you connect drives, keyboards, etc to S3's....
Yeah those work, I actually use this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-2...100-Note-i9220-Nexus-i9250-XOOM-/120894431890
or something similar, but you still can't use HDMI when you use those
you can however plug in keyboard, mouse, usb drive and anything else you want all at once which is cool

only MHL is affected by the pins, usb OTG is not affected by the new layout
I use USB OTG pretty often and I want to be able to charge my device while using it for other things. Is there any type of splitter from microUSB (Male) to USB 2.0 female + microUSB female OR from microUSB male to 2x microUSB female?
EDIT: Found this using Google- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856663
I would like to know the same thing. I noticed that Samsung sells a USB OTG cabe and was wondering if it has the ability to connect a charger to it like the HDMI adapter has. I'm surprised that no one is interested in charging their devices while using USB OTG. Someone please comment, is this possible or not. Thanks!!

never mind, I misunderstood your post
My monitor came with a MHL cable, (Micro USB <-> HDMI)
And my moniotr has a ports that is writed Port1 (HDMI/MHL)
When i plug it on my N7100 do not appears nothing on the Screen, what should i do!?
The mhl cables have to have the double charging and USB port in order for them to work I believe. The cable has to have an adapter that allows you to charge the phone and output media to a specific device. If the mirror option on the note 2 isn't readily available or plug and play, you may also need to install a ROM that has that feature built in.

The mirror option is how you display media from your phone to TV like pics and videos. Google T-Mobile mhl adapter and you will see what I'm talking about. It charges the phone and display the media your trying to play. A mhl cable by itself will not work. You need that adapter

i like to use my nexus 5/7 to connect to my computer at home through VNC but it draws up quite a bit of power. Is it possible to have a OTG cable that'll connect to the MicroUSB port of the phone and then two cables come out, one that has female MicroUSB port to charge the phone, and a second cable that's a female USB port so I can connect a USB mouse to?
Thanks

I have not tried this myself but read on other devices that OTG Y cables will do what your asking.
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Nexus-Galaxy/dp/B00CXAC1ZW
Be warned that sometimes the specific device will not support concurrent charging. The cable link above specifically mentions the Nexus 7. Read the reviews.

I have that cable, it does charge the phone but stick doesn't get mounted. I haven't tried to make it work or anything because I don't use it.
