Just curious as to how much sharper the image is.
Considering a portion of the real estate is used for virtual buttons Im wondering just how a QHD screen like the Atrix or Amaze would compare ?
Has anyone tried a side by side ?
Here are some 8MP photos of iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus. I linked to them as they are large photos.
For some reason the iPhone looks green and Nexus looks red but ignoring the colour hopefully you can see how the sharpness is on par with the iPhone but with more information as the screen is bigger.

Your photos are whacked
Also look at the HowardForums review for closeups of the screens comparing it to a SGS2. Not QHD but the sharpness is visible.
Big difference.

Its all about PPI and overall screen quality. The GN (HD at 4.65") is about 316 PPI, the Amaze (qHD at 4.3") is 256 PPI. A level of ~315 PPI is supposedly the point where the individual pixels are unable to be discerned by the naked eye at a reasonable distance.
Something to keep in mind is that the GN is pentile (RGBG) and the Amaze is a super LCD (full RGB). Pentile is usually worse for jagged-ness, but the resolution is SO high that it overcomes the issue of pentile (all extremely close-up macro shots of the Galaxy Nexus/Note seem to prove this). SLCD is "better" for jagged-ness, but isn't nearly as bright as AMOLED. The lower PPI leads to more jaggedness when compared to the GN though.
Basically, AMOLED HD is going to blow qHD SLCD out of the water.
Hope this helps.

It sure hope so. I'm planning on giving up my Amaze for the GSM Galaxy Nexus when it's available in the states.
Luckily though I'll have plenty of time to see it before I buy it since Verizon will be getting it before the GSM version becomes available.
The screen on my Amaze is really quite good so if the Galaxy Nexus is way better it will be nothing short of amazing! I'm really looking forward to the Nexus.
I had the HTC Sensation before my Galaxy NExus and that was QHD SLCD, and the Nexus is just something else, outdoors is far better, and when watching a 720p video on both handsets i can confirm the is far more detail (as you would expect) on the nexus than the sensation.

Like I said above. The resolution is just so damn high it doesn't matter. Text looks super crisp. Take a look at this link from androidcentral looking at the Galaxy Note's screen (same as Nexus but 1280x800) in super macro shots and I think you'll agree.
qHD
I've never seen an qHD screen before until last week when I was checking out the HTC Raider and EVO 3D. Wow! I was surprised by how nice the text and color of the screens look compared with my Samsung Vibrant. I think Super AMOLED is over rated IMHO. Unless you are only concern with graphics, I think qHD is way better.
If the Galaxy Nexus screen is as good as the qHD, I'll go for it. Otherwise, I rather get an HTC Raider and wait for the ICS update later.

qHD is the resolution and has nothing to do with screen technology (sAMOLED vs SLCD). Galaxy Nexus has a much higher resolution, and better screen technology than SLCD, so yeah I would assume it's better than qHD

Has anyone been able to compare the screen on the rezound with the nexus? That's the screen that has a nice HD display with a 342 or so dpi. I've seen it and I think its better then the iPhones. Wondering how the nexus looks side to side with that phones display.

I think that is a misleading image. The pixels in the Galaxy Nexus and Doid RAZR appear practically the same size in that image, whereas the Galaxy Nexus's pixels should be in the region of 20% smaller. The Rezound on the other hand looks a lot more accurate.
If you actually listen to what they have to say on The Vergecast, they say the Galaxy Nexus looks great just like the Rezound, whereas the RAZR looks awful.

that pic just doesn't make much sense to me. because on the AMOLED screens the macro shot is so near that it shows the actual SUBPIXEL layout, while the Rezound screenshot doesn't show subpixel and instead shows the letter on a zoom level which already creates the white coloring. You cannot see any subpixel, but for a fair comparison the macro shot should be the same for all.
either go all into details and show the subpixel layout level, or pull a little bit back and show us with a macro shot how WHITE text will look for the enduser on all screens...

These subpixel shots are ridiculous. You'll never look at your screen this way unless you're a weirdo. To the human eye the Nexus has an absolutely gorgeous screen and I have zero issues with it. Who the hell cares what the subpixel layout is as long as you don't notice issues when looking at it. I have a Sensation and my wife has iPhone 4 and the Nexus screen is a million times better for me than both of those.

compare the G2's S-TFT with the Vibrant's SAMOLED in a Tmo store.. even tho the G2's is nice and sharp,, the Vibrant's is beautifully vibrant and the colors POP.. and blacks are.... black (aka OFF).. instead of dark grey (since the backlight is still on) from LCD screens.
I prefer the N1's amoled. Something about true blacks.. mmm.
I have to disagree with you guys about amoled or samoled looking better. Colors are unrealistic and it strains the eyes more. I do agree that the blacks are black but I preffer slcd. Once again its my opinion and to each his own

Yup you're right. But, before the N1, I was coming from a very old ATT Tilt. So AMOLED looked way better to my eyes. As for the G2, it definitely reproduces colors better. I just loved the blacks and also prefer over saturation to under.
With me although I love the deeper blacks on the Vibrant and amoleds in general the pentile matrix kills it for me. The LCDs on the iPhone, G2 and Motorolas look sharper. I notice the pixel density difference and it bugs the heck out of me. The color pop on the Vibrant is fun to look at but is not as natural as the SLCD in MY opinion. Both screens are nice. If the G2 had the contrast of the Vibrant it would be perfect.

If I'm not wrong, you can't stop using pentile matrix and stick with S-AMOLED. Pentile Matrix is due to the nature of AMOLED.

I read it's because blue LEDs burn out very fast relative to the other colors, and making them large makes them last a lot longer. The PenTile layout was a compromise to allow large blue pixels but have a higher resolution than making all of the pixels large. It was nothing to do with the cost.

There's no way they would use 1280x1024 rez and 4.65" screen. It wouldn't make sense to me.
That rez would make the phone into almost a square.
4.52" of Epic Touch is already borderline too large, even for a tall man.

No way. I'm 6'1" and I guess I have big hands...I needed to get a case for this thing just to give it some girth. It was too small and felt like it was going to slip out of my hands. A 4.65" screen, which would likely have a further minimized bezel and no cap buttons and very reduced bezel at the ear piece with 16:9 aspect ratio would be pretty much the same size we have now, if not a tad slimmer.

It would if they go back to RGBG PenTile. At 1280x800 (more likely) on a 4.65" screen, the difference between RGBG and SuperAMOLED+ would be academic. In fact, at that density, RGBG PenTile would probably look BETTER than "true" RGB. The whole problem with RGBG and RGBW PenTile at 480x800 and 540x960 is the fact that it's sufficiently low resolution for single-pixel width lines to still be a factor. A 1280x800 4.65" display would have so much subpixel density, you really, truly WOULD need a microscope to know for sure whether or not it's RGB or RGBG.
IMHO, 1280x800 on sub-5" displays is what PenTile was *meant* for, because that's the density where its advantages don't just make up for its drawbacks... they blow them away, and render them almost completely moot.
Yeah. I have to say 4.52 for the epic touch is pretty big as is and it was hard for me to function without two hands. going to 4.62 is overkill. I like 4.3 to be the highest possible.
I kinda wish the epic 4g touch was 4.3
4.6 would be awesome for me, hell i could probably hold one with a 5 inch screen and it would still look like the hero does in most hands. But I am also bigger than most people so i doubt many others would want something that big.

Around when would it be released?
I currently own a GS2 on AT&T (iPhone 4 on Verizon) and love it, I may buy a Nexus down the road when they are more readily available and not....800 effin dollars.
Anyway, I've seen a couple comparisons of a Super AMOLED Plus vs Super AMOLED HD screens, but they are done so close it almost seems silly to use as a comparison. I'm sure the higher resolution would help if I had my nose pressed to the screen, I just wanted to get an idea of what both screens look like close up, but not THAT close. Despite the lower resolution, the GS2 looks pretty sharp to my eye, not quite as clean as the iPhone 4, but still sharp.
If you have both phones (Nexus+GS2), can you sit them side by side and just take a few shots of the same text, icons, images. Close enough to see detail, but not right up to the screen since that's not how anyone looks at a phone.
Thanks
Point me to an image and I will do it.
Sweet thanks. I didn't have an image in mind really. Just maybe take a pic of this forums main page on both, a Gmail home screen icon with text...you know something with a smaller image like an icon and some text, or maybe a browser screen window with similar text at the same default zoom of each.
Is that making sense?
I'm not really concerned with color accuracy, more so with text and icon sharpness.
lol where are you getting the $800 price tag?? The phone is expected to launch at either $530, like the other Nexus phones, or $600.

Excellent, thanks for posting those. The difference is about what I thought it would be, sharper than the GS2, still not sure it's as "clean" as the iPhone 4, but I do notice a step up in clarity. Not sure it's night and day, I imagine if the GS2 wasn't a plus the difference would be even more pronounced. Still a nice display, now I just need to find one of these close to retail price eventually. The browser at default zoom is noticeable, probably due to the larger screen size combined with a higher resolution.
Still a big fan of the GS2, I really can't pick a favorite between the two, each have strengths, ICS being a huge one for the Nexus. Samsung really has 2 amazing phones out right now. Now to find a Nexus that doesn't come close to being what I pay on my mortgage. :-/
I was sitting with a friend today who as a SII, he set his screen to max brightness and his wallpaper to microbes. I set my phone to the same settings, and it was obvious that the resolution helps as I saw more detail (smaller microbes and more of them) but the colours are better on the SII - more vibrant. most people know this anyway. It is only obvious if you hold them next to each other, every other time I use my phone the colours are fantastic!

I read that Google purposely calibrated the screen to make the colours look less saturated and more accurately realistic. So are you sure that the reason the SGII looks more vibrant is not that the SGII colours are more saturated?
Got the Nexus today and having no experience with the AMOLED screens (iPhones and EVO before) I'm not sure what is considered normal and what is defective. I know there are plenty of threads about this, but very few examples.

If other people want to add their own pictures for analysis I'll try and add them to the first post so people new to the AMOLED world can feel better about theirs/exchange for a new one.
I'm seeing the same thing with the whites. They almost feel like they have a yellow hue to them.

normal with a pentile display same thing happened with the nexus s the rgb settings arent exactly correct
Aye completely normal. It's what a high-definition Pentile screen looks like.
Well, that answers that then.
Thanks guys.
Is this really supposed to be normal? I'm not convinced yet.
I came from a SGS2 and I can say the banding/lines/grey dots are much worse. The S2 seemed more glossy and colours seemed richer than the matt styled newspaper type of screen that the nexus has. I am quite annoyed as this was not mentioned in any of then reviews.

very useful post, thanks OP. i just picked up the gn two days ago, and the screen is bothering me as well. i havent done as rigorous testing as the OP, but i definitely notice similar banding at lower brightnesses. from what it sounds like, it is normal.
i came from a nexus s 4g and gs2, i've never noticed this problem with AMOLEDs in the past. very disappointing so far.

that's because the sgs2 does not use pentile, it uses full rgb, at the cost of a considerably lower resolution.
Updated post to include an up close look at the PenTile display pixels. Appears the same as all the others FWIW.
nice thread, i think you should change the title and have a mod to sticky it, this helps people not starting useless threads about their display showing tint of yellow/blue/grey etc.
I think the sticky is a good idea as well. Not sure what i would need to change in the title though.
Who knows a mod? LOL
I wish I had seen this thread sooner. It almost seems like no one else is complaining about this issue. I'm afraid to turn in my GNex for replacement because I'm afraid the replacement will be much worse than this.
For some reasons, the AMOLED on Samsung phones (GS, GSII, etc.) are not that great with the stock settings Samsung pre-set.
Just wait until supercurio (the guy behind voodoo project) works his voodoo magic on the GN's AMOLED.
You'll be amazed.

For what it's worth I actually took mine back for a replacement since I had what looked almost like a fingerprint under the glass - and my replacement is somewhat better.
The blue hue when seen at an angle is a little less blue and the "linen" effect is a little more subdued as well. It's definitely still there though but I think it's worth it.
Oh why didn't they just make it standard RGB like the Galaxy S II?

i've returned my galaxy nexus three time to the shop, and been through 5 units in the shop, problems were bright pixels, scratched screen inside and outside, random movement of the screen (like someone has been touching the screen continuously), in all cases the screen looked ok, just like the photos shown in first post, except for one that had a tint of purple/pink along the top of the screen(can only be seen in grey settings and dark rooms).
about the RGB, i dont think they have the technology to make super HD amoled display with RGB at low cost yet, but thats by guess.
I went to my local Verizon store, and all of the display models looked like this. A sales person let me compare to his phone, and his looked like this also.
Seems like this is just the new standard I guess, or maybe some of us have sensitive eyes.

It's one of those things that once you see it you can't unsee it and it will always bother you. I had the rezound before my nexus and the capacitive buttons all leaked light onto the screens. I had to point out this fact to the sales guy cause he didnt see it. Once he did he checked all of the display models and they all had the same problem.
That being said, all phones now a days seem to have some "problem" with them and sadly you need to pick the problems that seem to bother you the least.
As excited as I was for this phone, the screen alone made me return it. It's awful. It was sad comping it to my Palm Pre Plus of all instantly being amazed at how much better that screen looked compared to the Galaxy Nexus. I was never expecting to see a grainy screen full of banding.
It's also annoying no review pointed this out. I've always been annoyed at how vague most phone reviews are and the fact so many reviews just seem like they really aren't tech savvy because issues like this should be pointed out. The fact that I've read numerous reviews say the screen is absolutely gorgeous really makes me wonder if these reviewers are scared to be critical in fear of losing review units. Reviews should be critical and be picky about specifics so we don't have to discover these things after we purchase the phone.
I'm really not that impressed with the screen overall. Every unit I have seen (9) has had some issue with color consistency across the screen, or banding that never goes away at any brightness (let alone the linen effect). The screen on my fascinate (galaxy s) is downright amazing, with whites as bright as an iPhone 4 and great vibrancy. The galaxy nexus screen (every one I have seen) is washed out and yellow in comparison, almost like it has a disgusting tan film covering the screen). By itself it looks pretty good, but side by side with any other device (IPS or my galaxy s's pentile amoled) it looks like complete crap. I really don't know how Samsung screwed this up so badly and can only hope the color temperature can be changed via software to get rid of the disgusting yellow tint.
I'm no professional photographer or reviewr, I just asked a friend his D-SLR Olympus. Don't take this photos as an absolute truth.
Galaxy Note is on ICS Stunner 5.0 (screen mode standard + UI). HD2 on tytung CM9 v1.5. One X on latest stock OTA 1.28...
I find One X yellower on photos than in "real life", though I recognize that, at least, my unit has a yellowish tone. I find GNote (and Amoled screens) more stressfull to the eyes than other two, it's too vibrant, though it isn't noticeable on photos. GNote has some issues with blacks (blocks on images and movies).
First pictures are also useful those keen to e-reading, since they compare text displayed by Nook Touch, Samsung Galaxy Note, HTC One X and HTC HD2.

mine also is yellowish tint rather than my old sensation.. got my friends envious with the HOX.. they got SGS2 and note.. the screen of HOX blow them away and with the cam..
The HOX screen is fantastic - had to wait a while for a big non-pentile, high pixel density screen, but it was worth the wait!
Note could have been great if it was not pentile. Wonder if the GS3 screen will match or beat the HOX screen?

Your specific One X appears yellower than most. I had two side-by-side and one was a little less yellow than yours and the other was genuinely cool. Even with that, the cool one is still warmer than the whites on my G-Tab 10.1's IPS display. Samsung just loves to amplify colors regardless of the technology used. Seeing flesh tones that look like flesh on the One X is a refreshing change from my i9100. The display on the One X (at least mine) is the best I've seen on a (non-Apple) portable device. Second would probably be a tie between LG's S-IPS and SAMOLED+. I'm anxious to see SAMOLED+ HD when it comes out on the SGS3.
Here are some pics of mine (the cool one) taken with a Lumix FX500 using LCD Tester...

That HOX screen is definatelly too yellow. Out of theose three mobile phones seems that GN has the most neutral greys, hence the most accurate color reproduction.
I'm just wondering why is HOX so far off to the yellow, and some are nicely white. Are they using different screen hardware? It's a really weird problem. Ih could be corrected via software, but I don't know if android OS supports screen color profiles.

Cameras use the brightest spot on the picture as their white point in auto settings most of the time so you should try to set the white balance on the DSLR first. Then set the brightness value of the 2 brightest phone screens until they match the 3rd one (~ white level): by doing that you can compare the contast (~ black level) and color reproduction with less error.
Thanks for the tip and I'm going to try it, but, unfortunately, I come more and more to realise that I really have a yellow-ish screen.
For instance, One X tested by sweedroid has normal whites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YzFbVvscrEo#!

As I said, setting white balance is important because it determinates what is the white reference. In your video, the Xperia S screen looks blue-ish. If the white balance was set from the Xperia screen, the One X screen would look yellow-ish.
And your impression depends also on your monitor ability to render color correctly .
My first HOX looked a little like that, but not that heavily yellowish. My current HOX tho shows a really good white and way more contrast. Tho its still a little warmer than previous devices I owned, its much more enjoyable to look at.
Also: Like on your photos, the colors not only seem yellowish, but also washed out. Same was with my previous device.
There was a faulty batch with faulty screens. You rly should consider taking that device back for a new one, since its a hardware fault.
I don't think the pics posted by op shows the correct comparison because I have an iPhone 4s and my one x is brighter and equally white while the one x shown in the op is strangely yellow and have owned galaxy nexus and galaxy s2 to know that screens of amoled can never compare to brightness of LCD
My hox display isn't yellow in the slightest. Looks much better than my Galaxy Nexus.

The more I look at my device I cant work out if it has a yellowish tinge or is just pure white. And I have no other device to test it against. Should never have read this thread lol
There seems to be two types of screen in HOX.
I got my first two phones yellow tinted like the one in first post. Have returned both and my third device is perfect. No yellow tint. Pure awesome white for whites. I'm very happy now. Current device is black taiwan made HT24 Batch.

Mine is crearly yellow, HT23 batch. Did you returned saying it was to yellow? Did they accept that as a valid reason?

The first one of mine had more visible yellow spots on top of screen. Other than that the screen had yellow tint in general. They replaced for yellow spots.
Second device also had yellow tint and i was thinking for a reason. Fortunately it had a very minor scratch 1-2mm inside of the screen. Since i informed them the same day and the scratch was not outside, they replaced again. FYI, its not easy to convince service center for replacement here in Dubai and i had to speak a lot
