Hi everyone,
I wondered if anyone could should some light on google+ for me?
I've had for the GN for a little over a day nowand for whatever reason I thought I'd check my data usage. Google+ has somehow managed to use 296mb even though I don't use google plus at all.
I've figured out that the camera does an auto upload, so I have disabled that, but is there anything else that I can turn off to help keep this data usage down to a minimum because 250mb per day is pretty heavy...
Any help would be hugely appreciated as I'm completely new to android.
Thanks all.
Probably you have activated the automatic picture upload to Google+? This could be managed within the app. Under settings you could manage that this upload will only be done by WIFI or you could completly stop this upload!

I think the only killer is instant upload of pictures and videos. Did you even take 200+Mb of pictures? Everything else is pretty harmless apart from synching contacts and that wouldnt take up much. Just set your uploads to only go over a wifi connection and it should be fine.
Mark.
Thanks for the replies guys
I think i took a total of six pictures just messing with the camera. I think ill stay off the camera for a day and see if the data calms down.
Ive turned auto upload off so hopefully itll sort itself out anyway.
It was probably just initial contact/data sync and then picture instant upload. If you turn off instant upload in the settings you'll be fine.
You can also just turn off background data for G+ in the data use settings if you're not going to use it.
I've had Google+ issues too today.
I haven't got instant upload ticked, but now that i'm home and on wifi, google+ is say here rattling away at 4% CPU and appears to be constantly downloading something, but god knows what as I've been home 4 hours and its not stopped.
"System Panel" app shows my Network on the phone constantly downloading upto 1mb/sec. I confirm this is Google+ by force stopping the app and the network usage and CPU drops to zero.
I do have a rather large Picasa collection, but as these are already with Google, i'm not sure why it would do anything with those....
I've rebooted the phone since the force stop and all is quiet, no downloading.
Opened Google+ again.... a little download when I went into photos, but all quiet.
Opened Gallery, its shows all my albums, but no extra traffic or CPU.
I wonder if Google+ just got its knickers in a twist somehow?

It'll be syncing them to your gallery then. They've probably all appeared in there now.
Data usage of google plus
I have the same problem with my Galaxy Nexus.
I found that a backup of all my pictures in picasa is automatically kept under:
/data/media/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.plus/cache
which appears as "USB storage data" in Google+ App info.
This backup starts even if the "Make available offline" option in the Gallery is not selected and since I have many pictures in Picasa, the total amount of storage used is almost 2GB !
In order to avoid this undesired synchronization of google+, I had to disable the "Sync Google Photos" under my "Sync Settings".
I also removed by hand the above directory to recover the (precious) space in my phone.
Unfortunately this is causing the side effect that the instant upload is not anymore available for photos and videos.
It would be highly desirable that an option is introduced to disable this google+ synchronization.

Hello,
I haven't been using my phone today, this is just with very light browsing and leaving it idle.
NetCounter reports 700MB+ data usage already for "Today". How can this be? In the past 7 days it says I've used 5GB. What is stealing all this bandwidth?
I haven't installed many applications, can you guys think of anything that comes on the phone by default that would use this much data?
Something appears to be constantly syncing. Do you have Exchange installed? If so try removing it and adding it back.
I just captured a tcpdump of the network traffic and will load it up in wireshark to see if I can identify anything out of the ordinary.
Alright,
It's the facebook client. It's busy syncing all my friend's pictures and recent uploads :-/

wow, that's a lot of updating. I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say your battery life sucked lol
Glad you got it figured out, and that I don't have facebook set up.
I have had my HTC Desire (stock 2.1-update1 ROM) for a couple of months now and I'm enjoying all it's features. Especially the integrated Picasa tool. Take a photo, select share, then select Picasa and off you go. Great. Until recently.
Cannot find anyone else with this problem, so hoping someone has some ideas.
When I select the Picasa option for sharing, it brings up the usual Picasa upload options page that I am used to only very briefly (talking 0.5 seconds here) then quickly jumps to a screen asking me to create a google account!!! This is despite my phone sync'd perfectly with my Google account. E-mails pushing though, videos upload to youtube just fine. No sync errors at all.
OK I thought, I'll just sign back in with my existing Google account. Except when I do this, it spends a couple of minutes "signing in" only to then fail telling me that I do not have a network connection! This is despite trying my phone connected to wi-fi both at home, in my office, and whilst using 3G in strong signal area.
I think this all started after I accepted an OTA update taking my software number to 1.21.405.2. but I can't be certain as it was a week or so after updating before I noticed the problem.
I have Picasa Tool app installed, but personally I think its an ugly, badly laid out mess even though it does seem to work. I would rather fix what has happened to stop my phone uploading to Picasa directly.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry, can't help you with this but very interested as I have exactly the same issue. Also, as a google engined phone, why on earth have they made flikr & fb instantly available but not picasa You're right about the picasa tool pro too, functional but aesthetically it leaves a lot to be desired...see what I did there...
I have never used Picasa. But like 2 hours ago, I said why not and wanted to use it. To be greeted with the same problem. The account is active (gmail syncs without problem), everything goes ok... but it doesn't work.
Factory reset fixed it. OK, but not sure what I did to break it in the first place! Oh well.
It didn't work for me either. Yesterday I went from MCR r18 to stock Sense > r17 > r19 > r17 > r18. Suddenly, it got fixed.
You should make sure you actually have a picasa web account, and that you've uploaded at least one photo to it.
I became aware of the issue when I noticed that there were no photos in the People and Photo hubs - just little grey squares. Selecting them took me to a larger grey square then the message "Cant get picture. Try again later" My Facebook and Photo feeds still updated though.
I then went into settings and tried to manually sync Facebook but got error code 800723ff.
A search on the net showed that this was caused by the data connection being dropped, but this is not the case as I was able to sync my email addresses and Facebook updates from my friends were loading.
I removed and re-added the Facebook account at least 5 times. Pulled the battery and the SIM card...all to no avail. I really don't want to reset the phone and have to reload all my apps again. I did that about a month ago because of an error with the Marketplace. If anyone has any ideas or came across this before and knows the solution it would be greatly appreciated.
Another thing... this is something I was able to confirm - at least for my phone - when I deleted and re-entered the Facebook account. The time it takes to load the Facebook content and load a post with comments increases as time goes by. I first noticed this back in January when I got frustrated because it started to take the What's New in the People Hub over a minute to load content. On a whim I deleted the Facebook account, added it back in and lo and behold... loading content in 1 - 2 seconds. Selecting a post by one of the fan pages I follow, such as Yankees or Rangers, that had up to 90 comments loaded everything in about 4 seconds. Prior to this, loading a post with 9o comments was an exercise in frustration. I'm talking almost 2 minutes.
Before this latest error, I felt that things were a bit slow again. Not as slow as in December, but still a bit of a delay. Now, with the Facebook account freshly entered I am again enjoying speedy load times. I just loaded a post with 99+ comments and that took only 3 seconds.
I am worried that this is the norm. That as time goes by, loading content in the People and Photo hub will become progressively sluggish. It reminds me of WinMo 6.1 where I had to do a hard reset every 8-10 months because the system slowed to a crawl.
So, can anyone else confirm my findings? If this is indeed the norm, then this is an issue that MS needs to know about and correct. I guess I can delete/re-enter the Facebook account every couple of months but why should I have to? It's a minor pain in the ass to go through my contacts and relink them everytime I do this.
no such issues on my HD7, maybe you should bring it to service ctr, if the data connection is dropping, it maybe the radio issue...
I have a problem with some pictures of my contacts linked to facebook not wanting to update, none of the other issues though.

I've just signed up to say that I've been having the same problem recently.
I experienced the problem with Facebook photos as well, it lasted for about 3 days. Today it started working again, must have been some bugged update on Facebook side that's gone now.
I just noticed that the "what's new" feed in the Picture Hub suddenly has gone completely empty and just says "no news to share now". Very strange and annoying.
I had the grey squares pictures issue, I turned off the https Facebook Account setting and they came through straight away.
Well I don't use facebook integration in contacts.
I rather use the app for that.... I visit FB maybe 10 minutes a day.
For weeks I had been frustrated because a few of my contacts would not appear in the People hub, nor link to their Facebook counterparts. It turns out there is a Facebook privacy setting that allows a Facebook user to prevent "platforms" from accessing their data. Thus, the Facebook app will show them, but the integrated Facebook support will not even show them as your friend. There is no workaround or solution for this, other than to ask your friends to turn this setting off in their privacy options. I understand this isn't the exact issue the OP is having, but it seems to me this thread is full of Facebook/WP7 interaction information and I thought it may help others who are experiencing the same problem.

Thanks! I completely forgot that I had turned that on. Turned it off and it works again.
I have big issues with the Pictures Hub.
I have not been able to upload any photos to either skydrive nor facebook for days now, and it doesnt even show my pictures from facebook, the only thing I have there is "Camera Roll" and "Saved Pictures".
I get the message "We cant upload pictures at the moment, try again later".
I have two Omnia7's right now, it works just fine on one, not the other.

Hey! I'm running into the same problem as described by the OP and I'd like to try out your solution - I'm just not sure what you mean by the https facebook account setting. Where could I find that?
I currently have secure browsing as disabled when viewing my facebook account in a pc browser through facebook's own website, under account settings > security
No problems like what's described in the OP but I did notice that not as many posts are displayed as before.
On my lock screen I have it show weather and news (my device is protected by a password). The weather is wrong (still shows a moon), and the news doesn't update unless I hit refresh. Anyway to get this stuff to refresh occasionally on its own???
The gallery loads VERRRRRY VERRRRRY slow. I had to download Gallery ICS to use it, because the built in one seemed unusable.
I noticed the refresh problem on my tablet as well, but just wondering if you guys had suggestions.
I am not familiar with your gallery issue but you can set your lock screen ticker to refresh at 3, 6, 12 hours with the default at none (manual refresh), just go into your lock screen settings to change.
My gallery is blazing fast..I only have about 100 pictures though.
I have over 200+ pics on my sd card and the gallery runs smooth, without issues.
Regarding weather/news, I noticed mine wasn't updating until I checked the lock screen settings and noticed it was set not to sync - I changed it to sync every 3 hrs and how it works perfectly
---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:34 PM ----------
Are your pics on SD card or is it on the phone's memory? Does it run smoothly after pictures load?
question what class of sd card are you using and no not the size. is it a class 2 sd card? if so there is your problem. also weather needs to be set to the refresh interval you have set but it usually updates whenever you unlock your phone.

I feel the same way about both your problems although the first one doesnt bother me as much
The gallery loading extremely slowing is an issue although Im not sure if it something to do with me rooting/installing a rom on this one. I installed the rom pretty much as soon as I got home. I have over 300+ pix I transfered from my computer and it takes a good 20-30sec for everything to load
up on the initial screen.
I have 9600 photos on a 64gb sd card and about another 2000 photos in Google+ that load and my gallery is *****ing fast. Absolutely no load/render lag whatsoever. Touchwiz gallery is the best gallery in Android currently and I have a one x, gs3, Nexus 4, and a droid razr maxx sitting on my coffee table.
No idea about the other thing bc I don't use it.

This message goes to BOTH of you: The way you tend to interact with each other does NOT conform to how we want people approach each other. "This thread is quite pointless" is not only rude, you also fail to make a valid point about why the thread would be pointless. Just because you don't observe the problem doesn't mean the question is pointless.
"Please go back under the rock you crawled out from" is also a very unfit reply. If you feel a reply is insulting or not within our rules please use the report function to report the offending post and let us deal with it, instead of writing up a snotty reply and possibly get yourself into trouble as well.

That is what I purchased.
I'm not seeing either of these issues with mine.
i did notice a issue with a sort of lag on the gallery on load when you have facebook gallery sync, and i have a few thousand photos in there , but i noticed a issue that it would hang when i would be in any app that lets me select a photo by opening up the gallery then it would hang there, i'm thinking of just uninstalling facebook then re-installing it without the sync gallery option since i can't find a way to just disable it period.

Settings then Facebook under accounts and sync, then click your name and untick Sync Gallery. You may have to wipe Media Storage and Gallery data too.

Ditto this. Facebook sync was slowing my gallery waaaaay down. I changed the Facebook gallery sync to None. It took a re-sync before all of the photos disappeared from my gallery, which is now much faster like it originally was.
Facebook was also slowing mine down. I installed the 4.2 gallery and even with facebook sync on, its not lagging at all anymore.
stay awake
I have to continuously turn the stay awake option back on... really annoying....
So my problem was the Facebook sync. It is disabled and lightspeed again.
Thanks for the help all.

Hy,
anyone saw that the new gallery update brings "Browse your photos and videos in the cloud" functionality?
Now I sure dont see any option for this but at night I got a notification from Coud that "duplicates has been deleted"...
I dont know where I can find this features, but I sure dont want any photos/videos uploaded to cloud without my permission... So if anyone have any info on this, I would really appreciate it.
Best regards
X2
I have an htc one m7 that I just updated to the latest version, after a reboot it shows the same message "gallery cloud" duplicate... etc
It didnt ask for my permission, I have the htc sync disabled, cant seem to find the option to disable this POS. Not happy.
I just noticed this morning the same behavior. I am trying to find out where this service is coming from, why it is running without my permissions and why it is putting my personal information in the cloud somewhere and I don't know where or how to get it, shut it off, or change it. It has really pissed me off to no end. I am hoping someone has an idea.
Just came here looking for the same answer.
A bit of a **** move if HTC is uploading peoples pics without asking first!!
I've emailed HTC via the play store app and asked how do we turn this feature off. I'll post if I get an answer...
Chiming in. just saw this, not pleased. I'm thinking of disabling the app till a solution is found.
I might bin it too, don't want this feature using up my data allowance...I've got about 4000 pictures on my phone...
yea wtf
Same issue. my phone keeps giving me a Cloud Gallery notification every 10 minutes or so saying it deleted duplicate photos. What in the world HTC was thinking, we may never know. But they need to let us turn this off because I show it using my data. Not cool HTC.
To add to it, I open my gallery and its cycling through all of my photos. Constantly. I click a folder, then the 'highlights' starts fast-cycling through every single photo in the folder. Not like a preview as it used to (which was annoying). This needs to stop. As someone else mentioned, I also have thousands of photos on my phone and this is driving me nuts.

HTC Cloud Gallery does not upload any of your files to the cloud. It only indexes whatever you have on Dropbox, GDrive, FB, Flickr, only after you have agreed to link to those sites. If you see photos found by Cloud Gallery, those could be uploaded by Dropbox or GDrive automatically. You need to check their settings. Again, Cloud Gallery is a "read only" indexing service.
Started getting the same notification since the last few days -- and the worst part is that there doesn't seem to be a setting anywhere in the gallery app or in the system settings allowing to configure this "Cloud Sync" or turn it off all together.
And now I really don't know if my pictures got "synced" somewhere in someone's cloud Really annoying. Uninstalled the gallery app altogether with Titanium Backup root uninstall.

I have the same issue. Haven't found a solution yet but I wanted to let you know that freezing/uninstalling gallery will stop the cloud syncs but there are side affects.
I froze it and all seemed normal until I tried to set a contact image. Freezing gallery somehow disrupted the ability to link images to contacts. I tried it from within the contact app and through a third party gallery app and it wouldn't work either way. I had to defrost the HTC gallery in order to set the contact image.
There maybe other side affects but that was the only one that I ran into.
