Issues w/ black screen.... - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apologize if there is any easy fix for this or if there's already a thread, but I just recently started having this issue for about a week. Sometimes, when I turn on the screen it will quickly light up to the lock screen, but then turn blank right after; before I even get a chance to unlock the phone. The capacative buttons will completely stay light up and when I press them they vibrate so I assume the screen is still active.
Is this a common issue and is there an easy fix? I'm running the latest CM7 nightly build 258. I don't think that's the issue though because I just upgraded it today and before I hadn't upgraded the Nighly Build ROM in a couple weeks. I upgraded it today just to see if there was something wrong with that build.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Restore your previous ROM save

Are you using a custom kernel. If so are you under / overclocking or over / undervolting?

Nope. I'm running whatever kernel comes with the ROM and no undervolting or overclocking either.

Anyone....?

Have you done a restore?

I would try wiping dalvik-cache and the cache partition. If that dosent work i would wipe everything and do a fresh install of a different rom to determine weather it is rom related or hardware related.

[Q] Screen won't stay off.

Has anybody had an issue where when they press the power button, the screen will turn off for a moment, then come right back on? And if so, does anyone know a solution? I've looked around on the forums a bit, and its a problem on other phones where the screen has to be at at least 40% brightness, but it happens to me no matter how high or low the brightness setting is. Running ACS 1.0.2, but it has happened on other ROMS before, so i doubt it is a ROM issue.
I have had this happen too, but only in CM 7. And just figured it was because that rom is in the alpha stage right now. I have not had it happen in any other rom so far. When it was happening it was only some of the time. Was never able to figure out what the differences were when it would and wouldn't happen. Seemed like it was just random.

I've since found this happens very often when the brightness is up all the way, and the lower the brightness, the less it happens. Could this be a software problem?
I had this happen a few months ago. I wasn't sure what was causing it. At first it was turning on the lock sound, and the sound would play after the screen shuts off. Then the sound would kick the screen back on. I believe I changed ROM later and it never happened again. If you are on a custom ROM, maybe try reflashing?
I have had the exact same thing happen on 2 different Roms. Just wipe and flash and it fixes the problem.

Unfortunately that only lessened it, not fixed it. It still happens enough that I leave the brightness down. Tried multiple times. :/
This still happens on a fresh stock install of EC05. Could this be a hardware issue that I should get checked out?

Help!!!!

I'm still relatively new to rooting, so please forgive my lack of knowledge of terminology and such. I decided to give MIUI a try and flashed it on my phone. It was buggy, but not anything too crazy. Two nights ago, I flashed the newest update for it and ever since, the vibration when I touched the soft keys and when I entered my unlock pattern has gotten significantly weak. I went into the settings and changed the vibration level to strong but it did nothing. It was really bothering me, so I did a data wipe and flashed the latest build of AOKP. The vibration is still weak when I touch the soft keys and unlock pattern. I also have the stock ICS lock screen set up too, but when I slide the ring to unlock the phone, the vibration is normal again. I went into the device settings and changed the vibrations settings, but that didn't do anything either. I did a data wipe, wiped the dalvik cache, formatted the system and reinstalled the ROM, yet it's still the same. Is there a way to fix this? Sorry for being so long winded, I hope it made sense lol Thank you for any help
Did you drop the phone or cause any other physical damage to the phone? Because any control over the vibration would be reset after installing a new rom/wiping data.

Probably because of the kernel. That's my best guess. Flash trinity kernel and see how the vibration is for that one.
did you flash miui.us or miuiandroid? have you tried to flash any different roms since this issue started to see if its a rom issue or hardware issue?

No I didn't drop the phone. Held it in my hand the whole time I flashed MIUI

I flashed miui.us, but I thought the faint vibration was a result of the miui update so I wiped and flashed AOKP 39. I still have the faint vibration when I touch the soft keys or enter my unlock pattern. However, for everything else it vibrates normal.
If you haven't dropped your phone, then probably it's the kernel. Haptic Feedback sometimes lessens on certain kernels. Try flashing another one.
I flashed Trinity kernel with 1536MHz CPU And 512MHz GPU clock. I wasn't sure which one to pick so I just chose the one at the top of the list. Anyway, since doing so I can't change any settings under the device options, except for 'color hack presets' Everything else is grayed out and I can't select them. Is there something I missed or should've done? I didn't wipe data or the dalvik cache, because I read that it wasn't necessary.
I think Trinity is not compatible with MIUI, which follows CM team very closely.

I couldn't deal with MIUI anymore, so I flashed aokp b39.

Sleep of Death Issues on JB

Anyone else having sleep of death issues recently on JB? Im running the stock JRO03C Build rooted, busyboxed, and deodexed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737849), and only MOD I have on top of that is a battery percentage mod(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1738335). Recently in the past week or so I've had a few sleep of death incidents. This morning was one of them where my alarm didn't go off! My notification light was on, and my phone was plugged into the charger, but couldn't wake it. Anybody else experiencing this issue, or have any suggestions of things to look at/try? All the other threads on this are from ICS, so not sure if they would apply since this in on pretty much stock JB.
I don't know but think people either don't know the meaning of stock or I have to learn the meaning
What you described is not stock Rom.and to your answer no I don't get sod.
True. I'm not on stock, I guess I meant to say that my ROM was created from stock. Good to know that someone else is not experiencing this though. Thanks.
The only issue I have is that the phone freezes after recieving or making a call.
That happened about two times only.
I only have about two weeks with the phone and I upgraded to JB as soon I got the phone. I didn't even run the setup wizar in JB: just unlocked the bootloader and flashed 4.1.
I though it was a bad flash and applied the yakju 4.0.4 factory image and the flashed the OTA to get stock JB 4.1.1. I had the issue only one time with that setting.
Right now, my phone is completely yakju. I don't remember my variation. I just recall it came with 4.0.1 and upgraded itself to 4.0.2 and no more.
Cheers!

I was having screen freeze while using the google reader app. Had to pull battery.
Am running the same ROM, with battery percentage mod as well. Stock kernel. Not sure why.

I was running stock 2.3.2 on my Evo Shift and was experiencing this issue. try backing up your sd card onto your desktop and then formatting it. it worked for me. I run an unofficial version of cm9. the only issue i still have is that my htc logo that shows at boot is still gone, and with that gone I cant easily select items in hboot/fastboot on the device. but thats for another forum for another day.

1. 2.3.2 isn't JB.
2. The GNex doesn't have an SD.
3. It's also NOT an Evo shift.
4.Nice first post.

good point. i also was wrong about the sd card anyways. i flashed cm9 back on it. turned auto brightness off. it had the issue. rebooted. turned it back on. re-enabled autobrightness. no issue.
thanks for the compliment.
I'm on 4.2 and have the issue. A few times a day, I'll pull it out of my pocket and I see the "backlight" turn on but screen is on. (I'm not sure how there is a backlight if is amoled but i do see some kind of something very very faint )
In Developer Options put all animation scales to .5x.

I experienced a similar issue on 4.1, but it would happen almost once day (very annoying). I'm now on a 4.2 rom and I haven't seen the issue in weeks.

Screen randomly turns off

Does anyone else have problems with their screen just randomly turning off? I will be using the phone with my finger on the screen and the screen will go off. When this happens the phone doesn't lock, I can hit the volume button to turn it back on. I haven't been able to narrow the behavior down to an app. I have done a full wipe of system data and cache and only flashed a rom with gapps and it will still happen before I even restore anything other than Google login.
My phone hasn't been dropped or suffered any damage other than a small scratch on the screen. The buttons don't stick and seem to function perfectly. Never spilled anything on the phone either.
Anyone have any ideas about how to diagnose or someone that may have had the same issue?

Happened to me when running a xylon ROM a week or so ago. I did a full wipe, sdcard and all, went back to stock then flashed a different ROM.
Which roms did it happen to you on?
Scent from my bud
I'm worried that it is possibly a hardware issue because it seems to happen on any rom that I flash. I just bought a mako yesterday and am looking to sell this phone soon and really hope their is nothing wrong with this phone. It might also be kernel related also because the dual boot kernels don't seem to be very stable yet.

Don't seem to be encountering the issue on latest cm stable rom with latest lean kernel 6.4. Not sure what was causing the problem before, but it seems to have resolved.

It was probably the kernel!
I also use LK but when I used AK I had that issue and it was just me, other people didn't have it
The phone should be fine

My device freezes in a black screen

Hey all!
This is happening to me for 2 months now, I was running official 12.1CM and now official 13CM
I tried to also use some stock based rom but im pretty sure it happened there too.
Whats happening to me is that randomly throughout the day my phone's screen turns black and I cant reboot it by any home button combination, only by getting out the battery.
When this happens the phone just totally freezes and I cant get it to respond or make a sound.
I don't think that the phone dies because sometimes when its freezes I can still see the notification led blinking.
Does anyone know why this might happen? or where can i copy some logs that might help you guys figure it out?
Thanks in advance!
sounds like you have the sleep of death issue? Personally I haven't been on CM roms much on my G3 so I haven't really encountered this issue but on my previous phone I've encountered this a few times on CM.
EDIT: Though it shouldn't happen on stock are you sure it happens on stock as well?
I have this issue as well using the Exodus rom. I never had it while using a stock rom, so I think this is a cyanogenmod issue (Exodus is a CM based rom in 5.1).
I have the exact same issue with my vs985. Seems to happen the most when viewing any sort of video, but I have had it happen at other times as well. Pretty dang annoying, probably 3-4 times a day. Using CM 13.0-20151217-nightly-vs985 but it started when I first flashed CM. Never had the issue on stock rooted rom.
