Bricked Your SII? Your life isn't over. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

After the numerous amount of times that I bricked my phone, I could definitely say that I didn't need the help of others or T-Mobile.
Here is the "grand daddy" rule of rooting.
------------------ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR PHONE-------------------
If my friend didn't say that I would have definitely been screwed. A few days after I bought this phone I found out all of the features that it has to offer, so it seemed. Wifi Tethering? Yes I always wanted that, until I found out that you have to pay $14.99 a month. Clueless, I found out about rooting and the wonders it could do for your phone.
Okay lets get to the point. So if you are reading this, you probably bricked your phone or you are a nerd who is proofreading what I am saying to pick out the bad on what I wrote. I'm not hating on nerds neither am I one, but nerds run the world. Thanks to all ROM and Kernel makers. You rock! ANYWHO! If you bricked your phone, then don't panic. Honestly, don't panic. My friend teased me to the amount of times I did so and after the second time of bricking it, I didn't worry.
So I bricked this phone so bad that I the same screen popped up everytime I took the battery out. If this is you, connect your phone to your computer with your USB and use ODIN to rebrick it again. Trust me it will work. We noobs need to do more research, which I do. Go to Galaxy S2 root dot com. (Just get rid of the spaces It worked for me. and just following the directions again (not including putting your phone into download mode and whatnot) worked for me. Just plug in your phone, open ODIN and follow the rest of the instructions and it should work fine.
Rules for backing up? Sure thought you would never ask.
Back up your current ROM first:
-Turn off phone and hold the up and down volume key while holding the power button.
-When you feel the phone vibrate let go of the power button, but hold on to the volume buttons.
-Options come up, use the volume keys to move up and down and the power. keys to select.
- Go to these. Backup and Restore>Backup.
You are done. Don't turn off your phone while backing up though.
Now go to the reference site about and learn how to root it. After you do, come back to this site, but go into Android Development and you will find roms you can choose from that will fit to your liking.
It's easy..
Download the ROM to your SD card.
Do the procedure that will take you into download mode explained above.
Go to install from sd card and choose the file you want to download.
Got any questions? I'm considered a noob because I joined yesterday. I can still help though. I loved the video that you have to watch before you register. I think I'm about to log out and watch it again.

Welcome to Xda. Great to have you on board

Is this a clever way to advertise a webpage? BTW, if you read.. it is generally very difficult to brick a phone..

I think backup is only available if you have CWM, not stock recovery. At least I don't see that option on my stock phone after booting to recovery

you know, I suppose it could be.. I didn't even think about it, guess I give people the benefit of the doubt

Plus we already got stock .tar file to flash through odin now. And yeah, this phone is pretty much impossible to brick. Either using superoneclick or original rooting method, so easy..

Sorry, it is not. When I got my phone last month, it was going to hell and back trying to get rooting instructions. That site helped me a lot and it really worked for me. I'm just helping someone else who still needed more information on rooting/bricking their phone.

[Q] Horray! I bricked my epic...

Ok, so like...two days ago, I followed qbkings video on how to root & clockworkmod an epic with EI22, well it worked. I got recovery working A ok and played around with some roms and stuff. They all worked for the most part, but after rebooting my phone, the SAMSUNG loading screen wouldnt fade away, realizing it had been soft bricked. I tried recoveries but they didnt work. tried tutorial after tutorial after tutoria, but no luck. When trying the Odin unroot method It'd always be stuck on like a factory. file, and keep getting the phone - ! - computer error afterwards. Ive tried looking around the forums and such, but no go. I really need help with this.
You didn't look to hard. There have been 5 threads like this in the last 2 weeks. Go to the stickies, top of development and follow post 1 of How to restore a semi-bricked Epic.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Uh yeah, that was one of the first posts I tried. Never worked for me. Followed exactly step by step and repeated the process five times, but ive been constantly getting stuck on factoryfs.rfs
oh ****, now it wont even turn on. tried charger usb, nothing! no indicator or anything. damn. am I screwed?
I think you were better off leaving your phone alone. If following instructions is difficult, than that should have been your first clue. Id post a link to help you, but you have already read and tried it, and even that didn't work........time for you to buy an iphone I guess.
Sent from cyandroid
Try pulling the battery and sd card, let sit for an hour with usb unplugged, then connect to usb cable with odin running and try to boot into download mode.
If it goes, pop the battery in and load up ei22 or another odinable tar along with the recovery in qbkings videos. Make sure only reboot is checked in odin.
If not, go back and try every step in the sticky. I doubt that you have a problem that has not been experienced already.

So you tried buying and using a better cable? And tried with both the battery and sd card out using only the computer as a power source like the thread in Development said to do?

Sometimes the truth hurts.
I tend to agree with that sentiment, nothing against you OP, but there are some that gravitate to technology and feel at home, and then there are some that gravitate and lack the necessary skills for something like this.
This is a very straight-forward task, especially with all of qbking's hard work in making those very easy to follow videos, and other's time typing out tutorials, so I really fail to see how most have so much trouble making it work. Maybe they belong in the latter analysis.

We all started somewhere on this, and I bet most people didn't have success right away. I know I didn't on either platform I've worked on. I'm just sick of the n00b flaming around here. These people might be the ones who's roms or kernels you running in a year. Just show some respect.

Youll have to find one of them jigs to get you back into download mode I assume usually time heals all mistakes though if your inpatient id look up how to make an odin(download) reset jig ( I think its called that). I think there a thread about that lying around here somewhere...

Yeah, not trying to knock on you too hard, but qbkings videos should be all you need for successfully rooting and flashing. He works hard on them and is very clear with instructions.

Yup, Ive tried different cables, ports, no battery, battery but got nothing. I thoroughly read through the entire post and tried what was suggested and got nothing. Phone wont turn on or do anything. I'm thinking that i'm screwed. I have been thinking about getting a replacement epic for a while, cause some time ago I actually accidentally dropped it from my desk and this happened to it http://imgur.com/ZBlNn still worked fine, so I didn't really bother thinking about replacing it, but now I'm guessing that I have to. If I do end up requesting for a replacement, any tips/fore warnings about what I should say when I talk to the guys over at sprint before i end up mumbling like an idiot.

With the soft brick you might have been able to save it. It happened to my brothers phone and what I did to fix it was wipe everything, factory reset
Then flash stock rom. Wipe everything again
Then flash stock kernel
Wipe everything again
Then it was perfect.
If you had already been flashing roms.and such then your problem wasn't following directions.
You just might have flashed a rom without a supported kernal. Causing bootloop
As far as where you are now.. maybe tell then you dropped it and it never turned back on?
I don't think they can ever find out you rooted it if it never turns on again lol

Don't use the broken screen as the reason or they will charge you around $100. Just try and make sure you get across the point that its the faulty phone (even if it isn't) and make sure you have an accurate believable story on how it got bricked. If you mention anything about messing with root or anything similar they won't replace it.
True. But on another note you can't say much. Only other thing I can think of is saying maybe you tried updating the device and it died

Seriously you ignored the odin mode jig? it jumps you back into download mode and you should be able to odin back to eco5........ Ill find a how to for ya.
Its all over a simple google search and you can find a usb jig for about 8 bucks.

I just unbricked my wife's EPIC with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
thanks dyehya for the howto tutorial!
Jus tell them you took it off charge this morning and it wouldn't come on.
Did you try the mythological magic button? The pin hole behind the cover next to the camera lens?

Soft Bricked E4GT (still hope!)

Hey guys, I want to quickly thank all of you who come by and read this and offer me any help, I GREATLY appreciate it!
So my story quickly in a nutshell, I was on Caulkins ics rom, I wanted to flash the new alpha build for CM9, didn't flash back to GB first, tried flashing using clockwork on the ics Caulkins rom, it froze, and now it won't boot up. What happens when I turn it on it;
1. Samsung Galaxy S II - logo appears,
2. ... that is all. It resets every 15-20 seconds or so.
I cannot get into recovery mode using vol up+power button, however I can get into odin mode with vol dwn+power (which I was told because of this there is hope). However! I have tried both the one touch odin 181 EL29 restore/root, and it get's 98% done everytime, but gets stuck when it says writing the "data.img" and it never progresses further from there. I have tried this numerous times with different cables, different usb ports and different computers.
Now when I try the other odin 185 version, I have attached all the appropriate tar files and md5 files in the pda, phone and csc slots, and have tried MANY different files for those and watched several videos from QBKING77 and others dealing with how to restore using odin, but everytime I have flashed with this version of odin, everything works fine and my phone resets and all... but once again... never gets the past the Samsung Galaxy S II logo, and it keeps resetting every like 15-20 seconds.
Does anyone know what I can do? Or is there no hope and should I make a claim with my insurance? I haven't tried a jig yet, but idk if that would really help me out in this case,
any and all thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated,
again, thank you for your time
If nobody else has a better idea for you, this is the site I keep available for if I slip up for some reason.

Not to be a ****, but you realize there are at least a dozen threads about this exact issue right? I know we all make mistakes but you really, really need to read before you flash, and read before you post..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591199
Those were just on the first page of general. Of course this also comes up dozens of times in every ROM thread. Learn to read people, this is embarrassing. We all felt bad a week into ICS but now there is so much evidence that it's just embarrassing.
If you had taken the time to do a Google search rather than post you would know your phone is hard bricked and cannot be fixed. You can either file a claim with asurion for a hundred bucks if you have insurance (which is the right thing to do) or you can lie and go to Sprint and hope they swap it for you in store. But since that is at best questionable and at worst fraud, you should pay the moron tax and file a claim. Even doing that is ridiculous since you are affecting all of us every time you file a claim that was preventable. Every root related claim is one tiny step closer to the end of claims for root related issues.

Actually I dont think he was harsh he was right on point... He notated links that can be used for reference and yes he is 100% correct. There are numerous links and new threads popping up every day about the same exact issue. Within mostly all ICS threads it shows how to flash different roms... He also started his post as not to be a ****...
Ok people seriously we got to do better when dealing with these ICS roms since we can all start a new post to get the community to help us but we can not read posts where the community has given great advice to be safe.
2OP sorry about what happen to you but most get stuck with the blue light of death. It seems like yours may be trying too boot up. Try sfhubs odin packages and see what happens. Hopefully you can get into download mode. Sorry bout what has already been said but what you did has been posted a million times as something not too do... Please try and be more careful in the future so this stuff wont happen to you again...
Good Luck
If it is getting stuck on data.img, you are screwed. The EMMC memory was corrupted by the ICS-based kernel and custom recovery. By the time ODIN gets to it, it is too late, nothing will write to your /data partition because the EMMC memory is damaged. ODIN, Mobile ODIN, CWM, JTAG will all fail.
Your option is basically to return your phone for replacement, either from Sprint or Samsung.
Thanks guys for all the input, and I know, I didn't wanna waste more space and time starting a new thread and all, but I did search, and did a lot. But everything I found was with people posting that they were still able to get into recovery, but I am not able to. I will check out the links given above, thanks for the help folks

[Q] Bricked SGS2?

So... I was trying to port a skyrocket ROM to our device with CM9.1.0 as the base. I just flashed it on my device. Flash went fine. I thought it would be fine... However, when I hit reboot, nothing. Black screen. I don't know what happened. It doesn't seem to be responding to any commands. I'm trying a ton of things. I can't figure out anything... Somebody, answers please? Can I do anything? A jig maybe? Really hope this isn't the end for my SGS2...
Edit - Tmobiles generously sending me a new one for 5$.

I'm thinking you may have jumped the gun a little on the "getting a new phone from Tmobile"
I'm sure you've tried taking th ebattery out and holding the volume buttons with the power button and trying to get into recovery or download mode?
Also the Jog in my opinion would have helped as a last resort, XDA is filled with so much usefull info that it would prob have been better to get the phone working on your own so you can see why it happened.
I'm willing to bet it just got stuck on some kind of boot loop....But since your getting a new phone I'm sure your going to be nervous rooting the new one....Nothing learned

Turns out, I had technically flashed a Skyrocket ROM (my port). Nothing can be done about that... Lesson learned: Don't port from skyrocket's stock ROMs.

Hard bricked phone

Here are the circumstances. Was on Stock Deodexed and out of boredom wanted to try SlimNote2. Did a nandroid before flashing SlimNote2.
Flashed SlimNote2 only wiping Dalvik and Cache. Made sure the MD5 matched before doing so. The install was shaky...I had to reboot twice before the phone would finally boot to the main homescreen. At this point I had seen enough and decided to get back into TWRP to restore the nandroid I had just made. IDK WTF happened but a few seconds after the restore began it aborted. Not sure whether my hand swiped something it shouldn't of or what but it just abruptly aborted. Now I when I try to do a normal power up of the phone I'm just stuck at the main boot screen (black background with white letters: Samsung Galaxy Note 2)
I tried to boot up with volume up and volume down to get into either recovery or Download Mode but it's a no go on either.
I'm thinking my only choice is to bring this thing into Sprint and play dumb. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!
Assuming that you know about download mode, I'm guessing you know about Odin - but you're not able to get into download mode.
Have you tried pulling the battery for 2 minutes then reinstalling it and trying to get into download mode?
or
Have you tried pulling the battery, and hooking up the usb cable (from your computer) to your phone and again trying to get into download mode without the battery installed?
These were both tricks of "un-bricking" Sammy's Epic 4g (my current phone - hopefully soon to be replaced w/the note 2).
Hope either option gets you back on track!

thanks but both methods not working.
...same deal with trying to get into recovery?
If so, leave the battery off for longer, maybe 10mins.
The fact that you can get the splash screen up is a great sign, most true bricks are...true bricks (nothing happens).

didn't realize it involved the Home key as well...unfortunately I may have jumped the gun with this.
Impulsively I took the phone to Sprint convinced that they would be unable to do anything with the phone. I was wrong. They apparently got the phone into Download mode and realized that there is a custom OS on there. They asked if I tampered with the phone and I said NO. They went on to say that if the phone is rooted my warranty will be voided. I think I may have made a big mistake by leaving my phone there <punches self in nutsack!>

sooooooooo, if they void your warranty, get your phone back and it is a 2 minute fix. you'll just be out a warranty and not a phone.
Yeah, I'm an impulsive jackass! So after one of you guys pointed out that I wasn't trying to access recovery/download mode properly I sprinted back to Sprint (bad pun intended.) Of course the store was closed already but the employees were still in there. Lucky for me one of them came over to the door and entertained me. Then he showed me my custom rom as he handed the phone back (it was in TWRP...dumb bastid don't know the difference between recovery and a rom :cyclops I was happy to the phone was in recovery.
Sure enough I went back home, threw in my SD card and just restored my last nandroid w/o a problem!
Wow, I feel like a real fool. I was so used to entering recovery/download mode with 2 buttons I totally forgot that this phone called for a 3 button method to enter recovery. I thank all you guys for the feedback!

Ya, just get your phone back, and it doesn't void their responsibility of trying to assist you in getting the phone operable again. Maybe void your warranty with Samsung. If it were me, I would rather try to revive the phone myself than let them try to load the stock rom on it. Just take what the6 say with a grain of salt, some of these techs want to try to make you think you've committed a felony by opening the OPEN android os...
Believe me, I know, I own a Service Center. I always enjoy the modders that come in and talk about what is working , not working etc. Or when they try to say they didn't do anything to their device, knowing we know, then they find out we are " pro modding" and its a good experience for everyone. We find it a challenge to unbrick bad flashes and mistakes. ..
Good luck with it, pm me if you need help with an exchange, etc.

Hey no problem, I've been there myself, asking wtf is wrong, great, I bricked it ! Then ding ding... oh ya, it was THAT. Sometimes I am working on several different devices , roms, and mods within minutes of each other, swapping back and forth -off odin with one, flashing into recovery on the next, moving a rom to an sd card on another. ... and each device having its own quirks, its easy to forget the little things. Glad you got up and running again. At least the store let you get your phone back after close. Its always fun to look up after close and see a customer standing there rattling the door- never know what your going to get, lol.
Haha at this thread.. Entertaining to read.. I swear I hate dealing with a print reps and hearing their ignorant thoughts about rooting.. One lady said I better not root my phone or we won't deal with it.. I'm like she doesn't know about triangle away and stock tars lmao

Not all sprint reps are ignorant to rooting. I'm a store manager and I never keep a stock phone, first chance I get I root my phone and load a rom.

You are exactly correct. Rooted devices are covered, I verified the M&P documents myself this morning.

ROOTING & UNLOCKING - why so much trouble?SOLVED

Backstory: I have just switched over to Sprint from ATT, due to a growing need to save money on my family plan. As such, I had to sell my Nexus 4 and get an Optimus G (HTC One was sold out ) Picked this phone for it's extreme similarity to the N4, which I liked quite a bit. Brought home my new device and immediately set about rooting and unlocking it. I have been around this particular block many times since my first rooting and ROMing experience with the HD2 back in '10. I am relatively adept at this and don't typically get put off by it being more or less difficult than the last time. For example, I had an HTC Rezound that required a length or wire to touch two contact points together during a script run to unlock the bootloader. That was fun! Point is, this ain't my first rodeo. I researched the threads pretty thoroughly, and although I wanted to use shadow's AIO root/unlock, it sounded from the posts that it was outdated due to recent updates that hadn't been implemented. Sooooo, I went with engine's root/unlock. I followed the instructions carefully, installed and utilized Freegee(after running the rooting script, which was successful), got to the 'YAY' screen, and went about the reboot to recovery process, and poof! - brick city. What sucks is that I see all over where people have had seemingly the same problem (no boot past the LG splash screen). The thing is, everyone else seems to be able to get a download mode or fastboot or both, thereby making some form of 'recovery' possible, even without an actual recovery program being in place. I cannot. I was unable to do anything with the device, and after many hours of trying, I took the damn thing to Sprint and got another(always root and ROM on the first day, that way you can blame the crappy product instead of your crappy ability to follow directions ). Now, I have never been too proud to admit when I screw up, but I was very careful about reading and following the instructions and took my time. This isn't to say it couldn't still be user error; it almost always is. But, the fact that my problem was so similar to so many others, but no one else had documented a problem like mine really bugged me. Anyway, I got a new one and have been researching LGNPST and teenybins way of rooting/unlocking. I have already installed all the drivers and software and am ready to go. But, I gotta be honest, I am leery. I don't care about taking another phone back to Sprint, but just don't want the hassle. I am nervous because it seems that these devices are very finicky and there are many posts in all of the root/unlock threads with people who can't seem to get theirs handled. This is compounded by the fact that my friggin device refuses to go into either download mode or fastboot mode. I have followed the instructions for this as well (vol down and pwr for download - all three and plug at the same time for fastboot) I can't accomplish either task with this device. WTF. I have no problem doing the noobie dance if I am somehow screwing this process up, but I can't see how. I have some experience at this; I have owned an HD2, a Sensation 4G, a Rezound, a G2X, a GSII Skyrocket, a Nexus 4, and this. All have been rooted and unlocked successfully, except one of the LGs, see below. I have had issues getting this done before, but never like this. I also have some experience compiling builds, so I am not a pro by any means, but I have a pretty good idea how to go about these things when I change devices. What I would like is some factual and specific tips, steps, and/or advice. I have read all of the threads about these, so simply mirroring the current steps listed is not much help right now. I also have some questions, regardless of whether or not some of the 'purists' will troll my possibly noobie style thoughts :
Why the hell can't I get into download or fastboot? If this is something that is actually happening and not just my user error, it would definitely be a reason for unlock failure and potential bricking, right?
Is it absolutely neccesary to unlock after root? I know that the two almost always go hand-in-hand, but nevertheless I think it is a legitimate question.
Is this just a problem with LG devices? I had a G2X for about a week, and went through 3 of them trying to get the damn thing rooted and unlocked. I literally could not do it, and after the third one even TMobile was tired of it. The gave me a Sensation that I had rooted and ROMed in about an hour. I had no issues with my N4, and to be honest I was nervous as hell getting that badboy set up. smooth sailing....
I know that most eveyone swears by the LGNPST method, but there have been reported failures through this method as well. Can I get anything more than just opinion about the best way to accomplish this with a minimum of bloodshed?
I would appreciate as much advice and discussion as possible, because I can't be the only one and we have to be able to figure this out once and for all.........
One other question: Why the hell am I having so much trouble extracting the .bin files on my laptop? I have 7zip, archive manager, and winzip. All three have the settings refecting .bin files being formatted with each file manager, and none will recognize the .bin files. I have an HP DV7 dual-core, running W7 Ultimate. SOLVED: Desktop at work showed these files properly as .bin. Don't know why my laptop won't........
UPDATE: I was able to get into download mode by pressing both vol buttons while plugged in. I was also able to gain root using fiddy619s Universal root and held it after reboot. For all the good it does... can't use font installer. hmph. Can alter root files though, so progress is being made
UPDATE: I am able to get OEM system recovery by holding dn and pwr until 'buttons' light up, then releasing pwr but not dn until recovery shows. Still can't get anything from holding up and pwr. Tried unplugged and plugged in; no love. From what I have read, you HAVE to be able to access fastboot to be able to complete this process, sooooo........

Welcome to the Optimus G. It sounds like you got a phone that needs the "Special Unlock". This is not a method available to the general public. You will need to go to IRC and ask Shelnutt2 for it. Good luck!
Stories like this make me not want to root/unlock.
I know the basics, but I dont know much beyond that. I would feel pretty stranded if some sort of soft-brick, etc occurred.
Rooting my OG EVO was simple as simple could get.

I'm just as nervous, but I'm not gonna let this damn thing get the best of me. Already made some progress. As I figure it out, I plan to offer another listing for how to accomplish this goal. I don't think we need YET ANOTHER thread about it though. Probably ask one of the others to add whatever makes mine work to their existing OP. I think part of the problem is too many different ways to do this that are only verified as working by a few; or many up until a recent time. Maybe the latest LG update is part of it as well.....
I know this feel all too well. On my third LGOG and I was able to properly rot/unlock. I'm more of a visual learner so learning using text only was a pain in my ass(weird right?) But I am way to skeptical to flash a new ROM and the ROM I want to use(Paranoid Android) was just recently ported so I'll stick with Stock rooted for now.

Actually not anymore, since I rewrote the freegee app, it's built into it. On the main screen press menu -> sbl unlock. Follow the directions, read everything, then after you enter the code, unlock like normal. This method is guarnteeed to always work, however there is some additional risks involved and only a small subset of optimusg owners need it, that is why it is not the default method.

That is wrong, it's vol up + vol down + have the usb plugged in + power and they will get you to download mode. Fastboot mode is only avaliable when unlocked and that is vol down + power .
Tried the Freegee again but the softbrick was the result. I didn't find the sbl unlock, it must be in the paid version. Waiting for a new bank card to come in the mail is the only reason I haven't coughed up the buck. Was able to get into download mode easily and restore using LGNPST. No fastboot or recovery access though......back to the drawing board. Makes me wonder if the last one was really broken or I was too dumb to figure it out.

I believe the SBL unlock method in the freegee app is there, you just have to hit the menu button (I think).
Ran LGNPST again and acheived unlock. Good to go.

Glad to hear it, and fyi as in the description on the play store, the free and paid versions are 100% the same minus the name change.
I was considering trading my Note 2 for two OG's but reading this scares me a lil. Is it really that bad to root this thing?

Nope not at all. Rooting and unlocking is pretty easy for 99% of the phones out there.

Rooting this device is easy. Unlocking was a bit more detailed but in the end, just as easy. Still not certain if my issues were genuine or user error, but I will assume it was me. Make sure you read the instructions over and over before you begin. I have been doing this for a long time so I may have gotten caught up in thinking I knew all there was to know and not paying close enough attention to the details. Thanks to fiddy619, engine95, and especially Shellnutt2 for making these tools and taking time to offer assistance. Use fiddys tool for rooting, then buy and install Freegee for unlocking. If you have issues with Freegee, use the two-button plug method of accessing download mode(press and hold both volume buttons while plugging in the USB), and then use the LGNPST tool with teenybins for unlocking and/or repairs. These are the steps that worked for me without hassle; your experience may vary......
