Best ROM for Canadian Wildfire S A510a? - HTC Wildfire S

Opinions welcome.
I noticed most of the ROM's up are for Asia or Europe.
Curious what Canadians out there are using on a GSM Wildfire S.
Thanks in advance.

I'm using the CM7.1 port with the overclock-able kernel, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226765

So cyanogenmod works properly on a Bell Wildfire S, like calling, data and accelorometer works OK?? Does the camera work?? I also have a Bell Canada Wildfire S A510a and am hoping to root it soon, I'm trying to research which custom ROMs work well with the A510a version!

Everything works properly except for a couple of bugs that are being worked on. Mainly the camera flash.. just disable it when taking pictures or use Torch if you need extra lighting. Video recording on high settings also doesn't work to well. I can't test data because I don't have a data plan.. but I am able to access "Self Serve" and get on the net that way ($0.20/page), so it should work. Other than that, it's awesome!
Some people report wifi problems, but I don't have any. Just make sure you make a backup first before flashing anything.

Thanks guys. Is there any difference in flashing a Euro or Asian rom to it as far as functionality aside from they have localized language support?

GSM or CDMA help?

I have a t-mobile touch pro 2 from htc and i dont know if it is GSM or CDMA, how do you check? im a noob at this so i wouldnt know.. Also is living in american version different from overseas version of the phone for t-mobile?
t-mobile would be GSM
the US version would be locked to US t-mobile and i dont think you would be able to use it internationally without unlocking first
what do you mean by locked to US t-mobile and for sure it is GSM? dont want to risk bricking my phone :/
That means that you can ONLY use your TP2 on the US T-Mobile Network, unless you unlock the sim. And yes T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 is GSM.
okay thanks a lot. any advice you guys want to give when you guys were starting off?

T-Mobile anywhere worldwide is GSM, not CDMA. (Verizon and Sprint...and a few others are CDMA).
However, the version of TP2 released/branded by T-Mobile USA is different -- with somewhat different radio hardware -- than what is used in Europe.
It will definitely work on the EDGE-speed GSM networks in Europe...but not as sure about the 3G-speed bands.

That's not quite true...it's only true if you want to put a non-T-MoUSA sim card in your phone. I've taken my previous (not TP2) T-MoUSA phones to Europe more than once and they work and access the networks fine. It's just that you have to pay international roaming charges...but it definitely works.
T-Mobile international data roaming charges in most places in the GSM world are $15 per megabyte...so that's pretty steep for web browsing, but not bad for mostly-text e-mail which is typically only a few kilobytes per e-mail.
Charges for international voice calls are quite high, too. That's why some people who plan to make local calls -- e.g., to call a Rome number while in Rome -- (or use a lot of data) get a local/European/whatever sim card...and that's the situation for which you need to have the sim-unlock done.

Run these two cabs (I also recommend running and archiving all cabs you use, in a folder on your SD card)....they're the official "welcome basket" for all new TP2 owners
Together they help clear up memory management issues the TP2 has, which you would see the negative effects of rather quickly.
The first one turns off internet pre-caching (a waste of resources with little or no benefit), and the second one lets the phone free up memory better when apps are done using it.

Read the first post of "Flashing your first GSM Rom..." thread -- and associated HardSPL thread -- carefully.
That's the most important thing you can do before flashing custom rom.

If you got the phone directly from HTC, it is probably the international verson that works with the European T-Mobile high speed network. Does the box it came in say "T-Mobile" or "HTC"?
But it is definitely GSM.
Is it unlocked?

altered at the firmware level to allow it to work with sim cards from other carriers. It's something you have to do or pay somebody to do for you, so if you did neither, then it's still "sim-locked"

Not a big deal, don't sweat it...that has no bearing on flashing radios or roms, only matters if you want to use it on a carrier other than T-Mobile (US)
I think what stevedebi was asking for is because the euro version comes unlocked from the factory, and I believe is labeled as such.

Bell HTC Desire Z Root

OK. So I am looking to buy the Bell HTC Desire Z to run CM on it... but I haven't heard of any confirmed roots yet. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks
It's been rooted since the same time as the G2, earlier this month. CM 6.1 RC2 runs fine on it.
Yea so the same root as for the G2 works on the Bell Desire Z?

Right now the Desire Z has its own set of forums. But this is causing a lot of overlap and duplication of efforts, so hopefully they'll be merged soon.
Right now the procedures to root your Bell DZ are in the DZ forums.

Oh wow...i completely missed that.
Yo I hope it's not too late.
Don't buy it from Bell at $499.95 no contract. It won't work cause you are fido. It will only work if you have a friend who is on the Bell network buy it for you. And even if you manage such a feat it is still too expensive.
I got my G2 off of this guy on Craiglist. It was brand new (even the battery had the little plastic thing on it), and I got it for $480.
I unlocked it, and even though it is a T-Mobile phone it works for Fido no problem.
BTW where in mississauga do you live?
I'm sure Square One might have some unlocking service.
Though if they don't, or if they have expensive ones, go to
mobileincanada.com.
They are the best there is.

I have mine running on Telus. It will work fine all 4 carriers (GSM and HSPA).
The TMobile version will not have 3g on Fido.
I got mine from Best Buy but I had to get manager's permission as I was not with Bell. The phone was only available for Bell customers when I got it. If they hassle you ask for the manager. They can make it happen.
It works just fine on fido...mine does. Bestbuy can sell it no porblem. Go to the queensway one as they sold it to me there. Yes you do pay a premium but i dont mind the extra cash as its brand new with a receipt with my name on it.
I mean you being a Fido customer just mosey on up to a Bell store to buy the Desire Z outright with no plan won't work.
It does work with Fido network.
I bought mine on Pay As You Go for $499 from Bell. Unlocked it and I'm now using it on Rogers.
Only issue is I can't send or receive MMS messages. I think it's just an APN issue thought. Mobile internet (3G and HSDPA) works great.
I never even tried MMS. Did you have to pay an activation fee?
No

Yea i think there is a separate APN for MMS.
I know abt the thing where bell doesnt let you buy it unless you are with them... I went through my cousin to get my sgs (unfourtunately). But will bb sell it to you if your not on bell?? Cause that could be ideal and i wouldnt have to pay the extra $20 bell charges for an upgrade to existing customers.
And i cant find anyone on kijiji selling it... like there is no one...

Yea, unlcoking im not worried abt because the new root method unlocks the phone (im sorry if you paid to get it unlocked lol). And the Tmobile G2 will work on Bell/ Fido/ Rogers/ Telus, but without 3G speeds... and that is a requirement for me...
I'm a Rogers subscriber who purchased a Bell Desire Z outright last night. Played with it at work and then until almost 6am!! LOL
It was so tough to root for me....... because I mistakenly didn't have the gfree file in the directory and made another stupid mistake. Rooted, using a global stock ROM with ADWLauncher and the 1.4GHz kernal as I don't like the custom roms all too much. This is a HUGE leap forward from my Xperia X10. So happy right now (and tired!)

HTC Desire only work abroad?

Hi all!
I have seen a coupple of Desire's for sale on Ebay and they both have said they get no signal in the UK, but belive that they will only work abroad?
Is this true?
Can they be rooted/updated Radio or anything to work in the UK?
Or is it just pure BS? haha
cheers
Keith
maybe it's the CDMA version of the Desire, which only works in outdated America, and not the GSM version which works everywhere else
Whats the best way of finding out which version it is?
does it say on the back somewhere?
cheers

they're blacklisted.. will never work in the Uk now.. unless you can change their IMEY, which is illegal I might add..
Hope this helps!
Or maybe its a phone that has been reported as stolen. these phones usually get blocked and cant be used within the UK but often work abroad on other networks. then again, it could just be a CDMA version. either way, I'd think twice about buying such a phone from ebay.

AU A8183 HTC desire in Los Angeles on T-Mobile

Hey all.
I'm travelling to Los Angeles next week and planning to purchase pre paid T-Mobile and use in my A8183 HTC Desire. I'm running android version 2.3.3 not sure on radio rom version.
Will this work? What speed connection can I expect in Los Angeles?
I understand I will need to add APN settings for t-mobile, what other changes will I need to make?
Thanks Guys.
Cheers.

What telco are you on here in OZ? Can you not just roam*??
(*unless cost is an issue)
I'm with Telstra and mostly need this for data - will use the HTC as AP and connecting my ipad - so roaming not an option @ $15 per Mb.
Ooops, hit Thanks by accident. All good, have a thanks bro
Yeah, I am seeing your problem. Keen to hear the answer too, now.

Check that link, a few posts down.. from what I can see you can use it on AT&T in the states, is it essential that you use t-mobile?
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I selected t-mobile as there are a few stores in Santa Monica near our accommodation;also plans and speed look great. I will take a look at AT&T, I really need some assurance though from someone who has tried this phone over there.
If I need to load a different rom or radio I,d like to know before I leave as I don't plan on taking my laptop.
Cheers.
Matt
You might be hard pressed to find someone who has actually done it, but AT&T use the same frequency. Changing rom and radio shouldn't be necessary as they don't alter the frequency requirements of the handset.

Ok thanks timmaaa!
I will post the result.

[Q] want to buy an Xperia Play and have a few questions

Hey guys,
I was curious if there was a particular model of XP I should get. Im not going to be using the XP as an actual phone but more as a mobile emulator/game station because I like the size and gaming features. I notice that theres a ATT and Verizon model, is one preferred over the other? And also are their and custom roms for people who dont plan to use this device as a phone? Like with the cell radios disabled and phone/text apps etc removed? Thanks!

The Verizon model is a CDMA version and does not use a SIM. ROM wise, I think CDMA models have different ROMS and GSM ROMS aren't compatible.
AT&T is a GSM model but they do not allow the bootloader to be unlocked, if I recall correctly.
You should probably get a R800i version if available. (Verizon's is R800x and AT&T's is R800at)
I have the At&t version, yes the bootloader is locked but testpoint unlock is easily possible. You can use flashmode for firmware and kernels but it has to be .ftf format. There are threads with many converted kernels and firmwares. I personally love having a sim card to switch between phones, and there is no shortage of GSM roms.

Thanks for the info. Ill def skip the CDMA model. Anyone know where I can get a decently priced international version?
ebay has them for $100-150ish. I know because I sold my international R800a for $100 bucks.
