Use flashtool and flash .42 firmware, use that method or doomlords zergrush, and upgrade through your phone(not pc)

Not with SEUS or OTA from Sony Ericsson, it wil brick your phone. But you can flash the official whit flashtool, when ICS official comes for the arc
If you relock your bootloader you can update with SEUS again. Shouldn't cause any problems

But why unlock your bootloader if don't want to use costom ROMs of kernels? Whit unlocked bootloader and costom rom, or kernel, you can't update whit OTA or SEUS. And when you relock the bootloader you must first flash back to stock, or you will brick your phone to, when relocking your bootloader whit costom kernels.
HOW

Remember, when you unlock the official way, you lose your DRM, and when you relock it again you don't get back your DRM.

Once i tried to update my arc from GB to ICS 4.0.4 i had unlocked bootloader,so i had to lock the bootloader and then update via PC Compenion.Don't use those just use FlashTool for flashing FW and find 4.1.b.0.587 .tft file so you can flash it with FlahsTool.Try googleing for FlashTool for Xperia Arc and follow the tutorial, you'll get it.Good luck.Cheers

Bootloader has nothing to do with rooting, it will not affect it.
And you don't have to unroot.

Must flash 0.42 firmware with flashtool and then make a root, and update by OTA (over the air) to 0.62.
Do not update in PC Companion !!! Use OTA update.

Please go through all the posts (only 2 pages contains important links) in the thread below. The thread is about similar question like you.
Read all the instructions carefully and know advantages and disadvantages of rooting and unlocking bootloader.
Unlocking bootloader will void your warranty. (You can also relock your bootloader but you will lose DRM keys). All the best. :good:

for the official update via pcc question it will inform you there is and update but you will not be able to install the official firmware through pcc even if UB and stock you can only update flashtool ftf file or with cwm flashable zip
yes you can relock your bootloader with flashtool to update the official way.
yes it will work especially if you are stuck in bootloop or brick as long as you can boot into flash or fastboot it
