Building a kick-ass community

Hello proud SGS-owners!
(Beware, wall-of-text)
I've been lurking around the xda forums since I got my first Android phone (Hero). Now that I've gotten myself an SGS I've "moved" from the Hero forums to the SGS forums. My first impression was that the SGS forum community is far behind that of the Hero community, which is understandable considering that SGS is a much newer phone and doesn't have as many users (yet).
I never felt that I had anything to contribute to the Hero community because it was already flourishing when I came there. I'd like to help the SGS community to move forward and reach that same level, and hopefully beyond. The SGS have the potential to be the real (iPhone?!) kick-ass phone we've all been waiting for, so why not have a kick-ass community?
It took me hours, scouring the threads, to learn how to safely flash and root my phone, but it was well worth it. The problem is, most people don't have the same patience or time to do so. So, for starters. How about we combine our shared knowledge and put up a post that will hold all the necessary info on all current FWs, basic info on how you flash, root, what odin is, how-to's and not-to-do's, and so forth.
All of this can and should also be put in the wiki, but I believe we also need a thread for it here or many people will miss out on the info. Perhaps something in between, the best of two worlds? Right now the SGS wiki is really lacking...
Any ideas or opinions? I'm all ears and open for discussion
To the mods: You can move this thread to general if you think it's out of context. However, this is first and foremost targeted at the dev-community so I think it should be left here.
Best regards,
Marcus

Great idea to collect as many information as possible. But there's a already a thread for this: the big faq thread.
I like your intiative though. And yes, it would be very nice to have an updated wiki.
BTW, for the general section it would be nice to have a sticky tips and tricks thread, like the one tboy2000 created for the HTC HD2. We need someone though that will maintain that post.

Shame on me. How on earth did I miss that thread?!
Do you know if you can you let other people edit the original post in some way? That would help alot

I surely does ... But i don't believe it can be done.
BTW that would be a nice tip for XDA-dev forum developers: create an option to let multiple (selected?) users colaborate and edit one opening post. But then again, that would be almost be the same functionality as a wiki
I agree with the op, the faq thread is good but this forum could really use a 'getting started' thread for people that just got their phone. And it should be in the general forum instead of development.

Re: Forum Suggestion /"State of the Site"

Re: Forum Suggestion /"State of the Site"
i tried posting in where i felt was the appropreate thread linked to in the "state of the site" but it has already been closed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10673299
anyway i completely agree with many of the administrative decisions discussed there. i just have some suggestions to help those work, coming from my experience as a new member my first few days. (few weeks ago)
first of all how did i come here? google searches for questions i had about my captivate. after finding info on XDA few times through google, i realized this is a place i may want to check out more, but it took some looking around just to understand the BASIC POINT of what XDA was all about. Something that would really help people understand "THIS IS THE PLACE!" could use a short, straight to the point "sub-title" at the top of your webpage beside your xdadevelopers logo. something that reads like:
"the home for smartphone development, troubleshooting and ideas.."
the second small issue i want to bring up is new users not being able to post in development forums. WAIT!! I AGREE WITH THIS. BUT, when i was new here i was seeing not able to post in a dev forum talking about something i needed info on, and i was seeing other minor members in other threads getting "chewed out" for posting in a "developers" forum.
HERE WAS MY CONFUSION: www.xda-DEVELOPERS.com it appears to a noob straight off the google express that the whole site is developers...
i started looking for www.xda.com forums.xda.com ect....
it took a bit of searching around the site before i realized the "Developers" section that i couldnt post in was the SUB-forum of the Captivate sub-forum.
it was just a bit confusing until i saw the layout of the site for all the different phones and the sub catagories each had.
i hope these suggestions can bring forth some ideas that can help the integration of new members.
Thanks for your opinion
Yah, I really like your idea. We're going to consider it.
what ever happened to these suggestions?
dude i flet the same when i first got here! great recommendation!

Hi there,
I'm a noob and this is my first post so please don't rip in to me for this or for the fact that I am resurrecting an old post
I thought that it would be better to quote a post that reflected my feelings and possibly (hopefully) answer my questions.
I have an HTC Inspire that I imported into Australia from gsmnation.com as I liked the feature set of the phone and it was compatible with my carrier over here unlike the Desire HD that is available locally but not compatible with my carrier.
I have lurked around these forums as an unregistered user since having my phone and used the great advice shown to root it and put Android Revolution 4G 4.0 by mike1986 on it.
Have been very happy with it but now I want more.
In particular I would like to put Gingerbread onto it with Sense 3.5.
I had been following a thread about RCMix3d Runny v4.0.
I took the plunge and registered at XDA but now I can't even view the thread without getting the vBulletin message saying that members without a post count of 10 or less cannot post in developers threads.
Fair enough I say but surely we can at least view the threads.
I can view various other threads but i cant even find the one mentioned above.
Can someone tell me if the thread has been deleted (all 1264 pages according to Google cache search - I was up to page 127!).
Have tried searching using XDA's custom Google search feature but can't find the thread anywhere.
Any advice about whether the thread still exists or if I am doing something wrong that is not even letting me view the thread.

That thread was removed at the op's request which is why you aren't able to view it.
Sent from my HD2. Still kicking the arse out of all your phones...
Ah Ok.
Thanks for the quick response...Very impressive.
Is there an alternative for this ROM or another sticky for that one around the place or has it been obliterated from XDA?
I have downloaded the ROM to my PC but if there is no longer any support for it on these boards then my quest for a nice GB ROM will have to continue.
I wonder how receptive capychimp is to noobs? I am in awe of the guy
Hi,
Noob here!
I read your "[New Members][Guide/Tour] Get the most out of XDA!!" and I thought it was great.
Being a noob, I couldnt press the thank you button, so I just thought I'd say thank you for taking the time and the effort to write the guide.
Thanks again!

Way to go bumping a 2yr old thread with your first post man..

You're Sticky thread links are Broken!!!

Thanks for our devs for their great work, I really appreciate you hard kicking ass work.
But almost every thing is uploaded to Multiupload site which has been down for a while. So I'm kindly asking you, would you please re-upload your works on another site so we can all enjoy our phones better
Thank you
+1 I tried PMing AllGamer about this very same thing yesterday. I would think with all the influx of people from other phones and forums in recent weeks they would see the clear need for this. This particular forum is starting too expand rapidly now and we need some of the long tenured members here to take more leadership role. I myself came from the htc HD2 forums and am probably very spoiled with the well oiled machine they had.
So here is a call to members who want to organize and keep things up to date around here.
Please try to fix the links, PLEASE!
thank you!
thanks i'm aware
i'll replace the broken links when i get some free time

[REVIEW] Sprint Galaxy ROM Reviews

Hey everyone! Just a short and simple post that may help some people. I have a YouTube Channel called "JGandroot." I have posted many ROM and root related videos for my Sprint Galaxy Nexus. So if you have the time, then I really recommend checking it out. Sorry if I do not belong here, this is my second post and I am very new. Thanks to all and Happy Flashing!

HR blackouts fixed?

Hello, Im considering buying Galaxy Watch 42mm but Im very interested in running and I read that Galaxy Watch had (still has?) problem with heart rate monitoring and that would be a deal breaker for me. So I want to ask if it is already fixed with new updates or still a problem. I didnt find any recent review where it would be mentioned.
Thank you very much
apparently not fixed according to people in the official Samsung Community forum. Samsung really dropped the ball on this one.
Thread cleaned.
Keep the subject of the thread in mind when posting and KEEP IT CORDIAL please.
If you really have to make reference to another Forum, and we'd prefer you didn't, then you must quote your source. Evidence is everything.
