[Q] Need Help Screen and USB issues. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Last night up did a clean install of starburst 1.9.8r and all was well. My battery ran down to 2% before I plugged it in. The battery continued to run down and turned off while plugged in. It continued to turn itself back on, boot up, and then turn off. I pulled the battery, put it back in and the phone charged to 100% while off.
This morning I am having major issues.
1. The screen keeps turning on for no reason. If I turn it off, it turns back on in a few seconds. A few times, it has come on brighter than the highest brightness setting.
2. The phone will not connect to a computer via USB. I've tried 3 cables, 2 computers, USB debugging on and off, CWM, and Odin. Nothing will work.
3. The phone charges when plugged into both USB and AC, but most of the time the touchscreen does not work while plugged in.
4. The phone keeps freezing and only a battery pull will fix it.
I have tried everything I can think of to fix it. I tried to reinstall the rom, I have restored a nandroid, and downloaded and installed a different rom.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update
I have now tried 4 computers and countles cables.
When I plug in the usb, windows makes the sound as if it is connected, then quickly disconnects. It continues to do this constantly. Some of the times it says it is connected to mtp usb. I've read everyting I can read and can't find a solution.

This sounds more like a hardware problem than anything. Try flashing back to EG30 stock and a factory data reset. Do you still have these issues? If so try a different battery. Still have problems? If so most likely you are having an odd hardware problem.

[Q] Battery doesn't seem to charge, can't get into Odin

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic Touch for Virgin Mobile I'm selling to a friend of mine. It's been working great for me for about the last year on VM. It was rooted and running Liquid Smooth and then CM 10.1 (both using CWM). When I called VM to transfer the phone to my friends account we ran into a road block because CM doesn't respond to the keypad phone codes VM uses to update the phone, or have the VM hands free activation apps.
I figured I might as well flash back to stock ROM anyway. I downloaded the ROM from here.
Odin got about 75% of the way through the flash and then failed. The phone won't turn off but instead keeps up a persistent splash screen asking me to connect the phone to Kies to do a system recovery (Which I did try and Kies can't seem to complete the connection. It sees the phone but can't connect to it, even after ensuring all drivers are up to date. But then I've never had much success with Kies).
I can still get into Odin on my phone so I tried downloading the .exe ROM instead of the md5 this time, but by the time the ROM downloaded Odin tells me the battery is too low to flash anything (which I believe). Problem is I can turn the phone off to let it charge properly (it pops up with the Kies message whenever I plug the phone in).
I've left the phone plugged into the wall hoping that maybe it is in fact charging, but the indicator light only flashes for a second when I plug it in. I'm working a double shift today so I left the phone at home hoping it will charge so that I can try flashing again, but does anybody have any experience with this sort of problem, or know if the phone will in fact charge?

The easy options are to borrow a battery from a friend with a s2 phone, or get a charger off ebay, or buy a new battery from the store which will probably come with a partial charge.
Sounds like your usb port may have died. That happens sometimes.
I was thinking of borrowing a battery. I have a friend with the same phone, so that's possible.
If the USB charger failed, however, would the blue charging light still flicker on when first plugged in? Because that's what it does. It doesn't charge, but it does seem to acknowledge that it's been plugged in. Also, when plugged into the computer it will still flash the plug me into Kies screen, but now my computer doesn't seem to even recognize that anything is plugged in.

It is possible. I had a phone that the data burnt out on, but would still charge. Just one pin needs to be bad to cause some issues, but not break everything.
Could just be the battery is totally empty too. Getting a known good battery with a charge is the first step to troubleshoot this.
I have encountered this problem a time or two before when testing some of my many attempted multiwindow mods, the device will in fact charge, but it is going to take forever. After a double shift I would imagine you'd have enough charge to flash properly, so try it again afterwards. Also have you attempted to return to recovery? If Odin only partially completed, your custom recovery may still be there and you might be able to use the power off option from recovery, while the device is plugged in, and possibly tricking it into not powering on to the error screen.
WARNING! Everything in blue is simply conjecture and has not been proven to work, it is simply a working theory. If it does not work don't say I didn't warn you.

Callin ODIN experts!! Enable/Disable USB Data in Odin Mode?

Hey guys,
Something really strange is going on with my USB port on my Note 4 Dev edition. All of a sudden USB stopped working, when connected to a PC, it would only charge, but no Data whatsoever. After trying to connect it to a bunch of different PCs, different cables, restoring to old nandroid, nothing worked. When plugging in the power cord when the phone was off, the phone would flash a gray battery logo and then it would go away, not charging the phone. I read online somewhere, to try holding down, power and home while the gray battery icon flashed, and it did actually start charging again! However, data was still broken. I read somewhere else that someone said to pull the battery while in download mode, which I did, but that seems to have disabled it again, and now the same trick before is not even getting charging functionality back.
I am really at a loss, I am positive I need to do something in Odin mode to get things back together, but I've tried all these combinations and nothing is working. Odin in Windows will currently not detect anything either, so I am in trouble here. Any ideas?

Phone freezes when charging?

Hello. When I connect my phone with usb cable and charge it freezes. Sometimes instantly, sometimes after a few minutes. This started happening yesterday. I tried with 3 usb chargers, two different roms, always clean flash and still same problem. If I have screen on it stays on this screen, if the screen's off, I cannot turn it in, only battery removal helps. Any ideas? Could it be something with micro usb part on the phone?
yes, seems to be usb port issue.
It's just weird, it was working fine, but then I flashed new ROM (updated it actually) and since then I have problems ... From USB, lost IMEI, wifi ...
EDIT: previously I just clean flashed 6.0 ROMs. I switched back to 4.x and everything works fine now.

SM-P605 - Stops Charging When Screen Goes Off

Hello,
I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (P605 3G+Wifi) that began to stop charging when the screen goes off. Yes, it's weird but not uncommon. All the topics I found (like this - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2775833) are fixed by using the original Charger + Cable, which I already did. I even purchased from Samsung a new cable, just in case, with no luck. I also have opened the tablet and resettled all the connections (the vga flat cable and the battery connector). No luck either. :crying:
The only way I have to charge my Note is by installing an app that keeps the screen on while charge. Than it takes 10 hours to charge (with wifi, bluetooth, etc off, and brightness in the lowest) 100% but at least I can keep using my tablet.
EDIT: It also charges when turned off, but the charging speed is as slow as when on with the screen on. Only when on, I connect it to power, it starts charging, the screen goes off and, after a couple of seconds, screen comes on again and its not charging. Its like someone has pulled the charging cable.
I am tired of this and would like to have a definitive fix. If I buy a new battery, will it be fix? What is exactly the problem here? Reflash the ROM will it fix? Does any one knows?
Thanks for the help.
A full wipe and reinstall would likely fix your problem. I've been in this problem once, where the device charges under any condition, but it does so s l o w l y, no matter through what connection. Solved this by doing a NAND wipe through ODIN and re-installing all with that too.
What's your current ROM and bootloader? What kind of modifications have you done?
I'm running 5.1.1 stock rom with root only.
Will have to try that solution and reinstall all my stuff. Thanks.
Good news. Problem is solved.
So I wipe data... no luck, same problem. Download ROM and ODIN, entered in Download mode, connected the USB and... Nothing happened... only the tablet starting charging but the OS didn't detected anything. Tried other PC, same result. So the problem must be on the USB Port.
Checked this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZcwHd0wy0M
Opened the tablet and took off everything like shown there. Including USB Port, flat cable and battery. Reassembled eveything and... voila... problem solved.
Thanks.

Stock Robin won't turn on, what now?

Cross-posting this from r/NextbitRobin
So Tuesday night before bed I went to check my phone (which had been on the charger for the last couple hours and so was at >95%) and noticed the volume button was not responding. I figured something buggy was going on, sometimes I need to reboot my phone every couple of days to get it to work properly (especially if it had run down into low power mode before recharging), so after unplugging it from the charger, I held down the power button, selected reboot, and clicked okay. The phone then proceeded to shut down, but not start back up.
When I tried to start it up again by holding the power button, I got no response initially. Then I was able to get it to buzz/vibrate, but the screen never came on.
I tried holding down the Vol- button and the power button together for 20 seconds to force a reset, and it vibrates a couple of times, but nothing happens.
If I plug it into a charger, I don't see any LEDs illuminate, and it just vibrates approximately every 3 seconds (not continuously, it seems to have some semi-random pattern). If I unplug it, the vibrating stops, but I still can't get it to turn on. It does not seem to make a difference if I am using a wall charger or trying to charge it off my laptop.
I have not rooted the phone or installed any custom ROMS, and have had it since I bought it on Amazon in June of 2017.
Any ideas what might be the issue? Any tips for reviving my phone?
This doesn't seem to match anything I have been able to find with some basic google searching.
Edited to add that I also tried removing the sim card and starting it up without one, but that did not appear to make a difference.
Update: I left it plugged into a wall charger for about 18 hrs and when I came back there was no change in behavior.
This many sound repetitive but lets first get the obvious out of the way so that we are sure you tried the most basic things for sure.
Is there an issue with the cable not able to charge the device? Can you try changing the cable?
Power + volume down for 30 secs / 1 minute / few minutes. This usually helps, sometimes more than 30 seconds for some reason. Try doing it while plugged in.
When you connect to the laptop what happens? Does it power on for a minute or vibrate?
Do you have adb installed on your computer? does you device get detected on your laptop?

Tried charging it with both the OEM cable as well as an amazon basics USB-c cable (both of which had been used to charge the phone successfully in the 24 hrs before it went wonky), no noticeable difference in behavior.
Held the power + volume down buttons for 180 seconds, did not boot. Repeated this with it plugged in (wall charger) and it still did not boot.
When I connect it to my laptop, I get the same behavior of vibrating as when plugged into a wall charger, but it does not boot or power on, nor does the laptop detect the phone in any fashion. I do not have adb installed on my laptop.
Anything else I can try, or is the phone a write-off at this point?
First step to solving any device issue is to somehow boot it and get in any mode possible. Since you can't do that I can't think of any other way to get it working.
I'm having the same issue, phone is not giving me any signs of life...frustrated at the moment
It's a total long shot, but try carefully cleaning out your charge port with a needle or a small pin and a little bit of alcohol. I pulled quite a bit of pocket lint out of mine and it works fine now. It didn't look like it was that dirty, but I pulled out a large ball bearing sized amount.
Other than that the only other thing I can think of is that your battery might be shot. It might have been taking enough of a charge to try and turn on, but not enough to do so.
