Hi All,
The touch screen on my HTC desire Z has now started acting funny. I am still under warranty for the phone but I was wondering if someone can help me here.
I am running the latest version of MIUI, so have the phone rooted, S-OFF and cw recovery.
I have noticed that I can no longer move icons on my home screens to the right (i.e move an icon on one home screen to another, if it is one the right side, but left side is no problems). The backspace on the on-screen keyboard no longer works. everytime i try to press this, i just keep getting the letter m. Also i can no longer use the letter p on the on screen keyboard. I have also tried different roms such as cyanogenmod but still no joy.
I would like to send in for warranty but cannot understand what i need to do to make it factory standard again for warranty repair. Please help.
Thanks
sorry mods, just realised this is in the wrong section, can it please be moved.
Your issue seems to be with the digitizer going bad. I had the same issue and got the entire panel replaced via warranty.
Good luck
Take a look at the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Unrooting_and_Returning_to_Stock
And this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971 (It refers to the T-Mobile ROMs, but the steps are the same. Just use the Desire Z ROMs from the first link.)
Touchscreen problem
Hi all!
I hope someone could help me,
My Desire Z touchscreen works weird, sometimes it does 2 unusual things:
-sometimes when trying to scroll it will zoom in or out like there is another finger there but there is not. If i run pointer location test, then it shows there is screenpress in the middle, but im not pressing it. the only way to fix it is to turn off the screen then turn back on.
-other times, the problem is similar, about 1/4 of the touchscreen in the middle/horizontal does not recive input.
The problem happens mostly when i play games, or read pdf!
Is this problem related to the digitizer? I have tried more ROMs, the same problem.
Thanks in advance

Hello All,
Since installing WM6 I have been having some strange screen issues. I suspect it is just coincidence. I have installed various different roms and I am having the same trouble ( currently latest lvsw ), making me think it's probably actually a hardware issue.
The screen behaves as if the top right corner is being pressed. This closes apps in portrait and brings up the start menu in landscape. It doesn't happen all the time, but doesn't stop once it's started.
Has anyone heard of this? Is this the same problem as the alignment issue? I have tried the buisness card fix to no avail. Should I take the phone apart as described in one of the fixes for alignement or do I need to send the phone off?
Yours hopefully...

How old is your phone? Some models had screen alignment issues which could explain your problem. Have a look at this thread and see if your serial no (HTxxx) fits with those with known problems. If it does, read Mrvanx's guide to put your phone ROM/SPL etc back to original status then send it in for warranty.

Mine is a HT648 which doesn't have any known problems with screen alignment. I have moved to canada, so although I am still in contract with vodafone, it is very difficult to send it back for repair. It will be my fifth replacement if I do!!! All previous ones had the screen alignment issue, this one is at least slightly different.
I am tempted to try the dismantling fix described in one of the other threads, but perhaps I should ship it back to the uk for a friend to hand in to vodafone for repair and then have it shipped back over here...
If you open it you void your warranty. If it is the screen alignment issue and you fix it, then you are good. If you open it and it is not the screen alignment issue then you just voided your warranty and cannot get it readily fixed. I had an earlier TYTN and I had the screen alignment problem pretty bad. I opened it and fixed it. It was pretty easy.
I would probably try to install a different ROM and and see if it still happens.
Good luck.
Allan
I've tried lots of Roms, unfortunately that hasn't fixed it. Reflashing back to voda and sending back seems sensible, but I'm not sure I have that much pacience!
i did the business card technique. use a business card around the edges and take out some of the black brittle gasket. make sure you keep it real clean around the edges.
I used a microfiber cloth to get under there with some lens cleaner. I read on another screen alighnment post to put a small piece of business card under the lip of the lower portion of the screen(that probably doesn't make sense but do a search for screen alignment).
when you slide out the keyboard i loosened those screws a quarter turn. someone also made a mortscript for screenalignment that helped as well,

Hi !
I have the same problems with the same ht648. The problem occured step by step. First after upgrading to WM6 everything works fine. But since 25th my device starts problems with the touchsceen so I can tap on it everywhere without response. I think it is a thermical problem, because when I put it into the FRIDGE the touchscreen works again for a while.
Have same problem here i also have a v1605 HT648 and i have had it for a month now. It has worked well till yesterday when it started exhibiting this problem. I haven't done any ROM upgrade or anything.
This is really a pain - i hope i can get it replaced

hi, had my desire z about a year now, since ive had it, quite rarely ive had a problem of it seeming to have a mind of its own, for example, icons may be selected, or the home screen will slide accross by itself etc. ive always put this down to a trackpad problem.
the other day (after having a miui rom installed for about 2-3 weeks, which was fine untill now), it started acting up strangely, the above problem started happening, but more severe, also the touch screen and softkey buttons would stop working for periods of time (or stop completely untill reset), but screen rotation etc would still be working, which shows that the O/S has not frose and is still working behind the scenes (making me think its a hardware problem).
now, i think ive worked out that this seems to be triggered (mostly) when i open the keyboard. (as also, when the touchscreen stops working etc, sometimes, sliding the keyboard open and close several times, will sometimes seem to unfreeze the touchscreen etc, and will be back to normal, for a while). ive tried doing full wipe and reflashing etc, but i still have the same problems mainly when using the slide out keyboard, which again, makes me think its hardware (possibly keyboard ribbon cable?)
i really dont want to send it off as that means getting it all back to stock etc, and last time i needed the screen replaced, took 6 weeks to get it back!
if anyone could pinpoint the likely source of the problem, id rather replace the part myself..
would anyone have any ideas, as they would be very much appriciated... Thanks...
anyone at all?
I got 2 Zs meanwhile but dont have any problem with the keyboard.
But sometimes when its charging i got the same issues like you - no touch is working and the screens are sliding nearly automatically.
I think this has nothing to do with the keyboard...
Hope this had helped you a bit
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
thanks for the reply, unfortunately im still no closer to finding source of the problem, its intermittant, happened lots yesterday, not so much today, maybe the digitiser? its like there is another invisible finger touching the screen..
This would happen when i was on stock froyo, like it would cause the home screen to hang, but if i was ion an app it worked fine. I would use it to refresh of sorts when my phone was hung up or i need to reload my apps from sd lol. Sounds weird I know, but even with stock froyo i had problems with my keyboard but with the prerooted GB its as smooth as butter...
still going on, and getting more frequent, i dont think it is to do with the keyboard anymore. im now guessing it is the digitizer, its like someone is pressing an invisible finger on the screen, roughly in the center. it comes and goes, it happens for about 3 days, then goes away for a couple of days etc.
also there is very little info anywhere on the net that can help, including replaceing the digitizer itself
anyone ever replaced one on a disire z/g2?
Hello guys,
My G3's touch screen has been acting up for a week now and I am seeking help to pin point if it is a hardware issue or a software issue that can be fixed.
Whilst typing (have used different keyboards) I cannot seem to press the letter 'k' and the letter 'r' or any keys directly above or below those keys. I wondered what the problem was and started swiping my screen to see if I can flow through the UI of the phone smoothly. Suffice to say that it didn't which then prompted me to turn on the "Show touch" & "Show touch data" within the developer settings of the phone.
After turning on those two options, I could clearly see that the screen does not recognise any input on two parts of the screen. This can be seen in the screenshots I have posted.. As it shows when swiping on the screen it skips an entire column of the screen on both left and right sides of the screen .
I was hoping someone could shed some light in this issue since I have been trying to troubleshoot this problem with no avail for the past week. If this is hardware related then what would be the best course of action?
Additional Info:
* Have tried different firmware and roms
* Have tried other keyboards like google keyboard and swiftkey
* Have tried to clear cache and factory reset
* Have taken it to phone repair store and they said they would have to replace the LCD.. Thought I'd post here before I go that route.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You're gonna have to replace the digitizer. Unfortunately I had the same issue with my nexus 4. That's why I have the g3 now.

Thank you for your reply.
Was hoping I would not have to go through that route but it seems inevitable .
Is the G3's digitizer and LCD stuck together? If so it'll be a costly replacement :crying:
That I do not know. I know the frustration though. It might be a big charge
Hello xda-developers,
as I searched for a long time and didn't find anything useful, i decided to post here on xda for the first time.
My problem is the same as mentioned in this post or in the youtube video:

It is not possible to pull the notification bar down in horizontal mode. In landscape mode, there is no problem. The screen is not reacting in this area, even in ladscape mode -> the navbar is not working in landscape mode.
This problem started a few days ago on Resurrection Remix (Marshmallow 6). After it did start, i flashed back to Stock G3 Rom and it still consisted.
Then the screen worked for a few hours again, thus it thought "Fine, it's working, you can flash back". I flashed to CM13 and it worked fine.
After a half day, it didn't work again. So, thats the normal case: It is working for a few hours and then it is not, for 4 days now.
I don't know what this could be and I wanted to ask you guys, if you have any idea, what to do...
So, I would be very happy, if you could answer my following questions:
1. Is it possible, that it is something with the software? I though, that every time I flash a new ROM the whole software is new and bugs are "away"... If this is true, than my problem can't be a software problem. Especially that I've flashed back to Stock, which does install everything new...
2. If it is not software, could it be hardware? But that's not really logical because it works sometimes. Only thing is a loose connection. But can there be a loose connection, which makes the screen not working only on this smart area of the screen?
3. As I flashed Stock ROM, there was the area thicker, because the notification bar was thicker. This absolutely makes no sense, does it? It seems, that the system says "Oh, thats the area which the notification bar covers, let's deactivate it"
4. Do you have any other ideas what to do?
I'm afraid of sending it in because I think, that it will work, when LG is testing the phone.
Excuse my english, i know that it is not the best:angel:
I hope, you can help me because this is a very ****ty problem...
Thank you in advance and lets discuss about it

Same here
**BUMP**
I can sometimes get it down from the upper left, but not always. For me it sometimes shows a persistent touch and the top center of the bar until I lock and unlock it again. Its definitely a software issue. Wish somebody would look into this!
Awkward Problem
Hello,
Nice to have an answer even in it is not a good one
I "fixed" the Problem by sending it to LG service. THREE TIMES. It really took 3 times that they found the Problem. Changing the touch panel solved it for me.
Hope everybody with this Problem finds a solution. Good luck
I have a HTC One m8 and the top half inch of the screen does not respond but occasionally it does sometimes for a little while. The top half inch generally tends to work when the battery is charged to 100% but sometimes that doesn't happen either. if it helps I use a tempered glass as a screen protector and the screen does not have any physical damage and it doesn't help when u boot into safe mode. I have also tried a hard reset.
Coincidentally i am working on a phone with the same problem (not mine). After a lot google research the owner decided to use another Launcher (Smart Launcher). This did not fix it entirely, if you are in Apps you can use the statusbar, but its not working on homescreen. I dont know why it behaves like that, but surprisingly many people get problems like that. I tend to believe that there is some software problem involved, because changing Launcher or using custom rom has been reported helpfull/fixing the problem (not allways tho..).
Now he had some other troubles with this phone and in the process i did a reset, that did not fix things as you said. I will install a custom rom next and will report back next week.
So i was wrong with saying a new lauchner solved the problem. Statusbar(sb) was accessible in home screen but not in app, said it wrong in the other comment. Now i had some time to test this and i can say that at least the phone i was working on is broken.
The top part does not recognize any touch input. The reason the sb showed some reactions is, that the launcher had a bigger trigger area (i guess), so you could pull it down. But still the top part was not responding. I tested it with stock, S-Rom and one Nougat Rom (dont remember), none of that showed an input in the top part.
Solution for now is different launcher or app that pulls down the bar. There are still some problems in daily usage, that this will not fix, so i guess its time for a new phone.
I am facing same problem. Is it any update which was pushed by HTC which makes the top 1 inch unresponsive ocassionally.. Indirectly, a marketing gimmick to push us by a new phone. So if it is really like that, who would buy a HTC phone again anticipating same problem again. Might go for Samsung (my own preference). huh !!!
