Is there going to be an upgrade for the desire ?
Would love that ! (Flash)
Any body got some info ?
of course will be, the question is when?
thats quick ....
Are we talking months or weeks untill 'droid 2.2 comes out
The internet is being a bit tight lipped.
The deisre is lovely, but not finished yet.
flash is nice, divx is vital and 720p video is something I wsan't expecting...
How are we going to get it when its released?
Will it be a user ROM style hardware flash through PC sync or will i just download a file to my phone, click go and 10minutes later my phone is amazing??
(i'm having fun wiping smug faces of iphone owning freinds as they ask what phone I have and i show them, then tell them I've got it for £15/mnth )
you'll get it here on XDA as usual. ready to be flashed on your device as any other ROM
2.2 aka Froyo: maybe next week!!!
I read this on engadget:
Engadget's post about Froyo
I don't really want to root my phone as it's I think really good as it is but I wouldn't say no to Froyo! especially since it apparently boosts performance a lot!
Quote form Engadget: "Update: How much faster is a Nexus One running Froyo? 450 percent faster, according to the Android Police. They claim to have a device running the as-yet-unreleased firmware that can perform over 37 million floating-point operations per second in the Linpack benchmark... compared to about 7 megaflops without. Oh yeeaaah."
As soon as a Froyo rom leaks, people will rip it apart and mod it to hell to get it to run on all kinds of devices. I'm sure we'll see Paul make a 2.2 Desire ROM, for example and now that HTC has released the Kernel source code, it should be easier to port existing quality roms like Cyanogenmod to the device. They'll all require root access to flash as they're unofficial roms. HTC will probably eventually port Froyo themselves, but that will probably take months.
Still, 2.2 hasn't shown up yet, so no dice. We'll have to wait until google I/O before that happens
it's going to be loooong till HTC themselves release it..but as soon as its out for nexus we'll see it here on xda in no time!
If you don't want to root & use a cooked ROM I wouldn't count on having it earlier than 6 months from now.
HTC needs to change Sense UI for Android 2.2 and looking at the Hero, which STILL does not have 2.1 I wouldn't expect it to be quick.

Months?? Seeing how things are going with the hero, I'd say they'll release it to the desire once the 2.3 is out. So better think of it as next year.
IMO Desire's owners are very important for HTC, since we are buying their flagship phones. I think they must keep us satisfied, if not, we will buy different phone next time. And I won't be happy if Nexus One owners will get 2.2 and we will not.
BTW isnt the evo 4g an Android 2.2 phone quz 2.1 didn't support 4g correct me if im wrong but if it is the update for the desire wont cost them so much time to port.

450% FASTER?! HOLYY SHIITT!!! I cant waaiiit!!!
I was just curious if anyone had started development on a GB ROM with Sense baked in? I am trying out OMGB right now, and am LOVING the speed increases, but I am also missing Sense like it were my first born child.
Thanks in advance.
Judging by how efforts to make a Sense+2.2 build for the Droid Eris have been going (there's no official 2.2 for the Eris), I'd have to say that it's going to be a while if it happens. They're doing a good job, but the progress has been slow.
Unless the differences between 2.2 and 2.3 are much smaller than between 2.1 and 2.2, it'll be virtually impossible until an HTC device releases with 2.3 and Sense. Even then, it'll be a challenge.
Skyraider Ginerbread
Really looking forward when a skyraider gingerbread rom arrives one can only hope X..
Porting Sense itself is pretty much impossible. HTC has all the Sense apks deeply tied into the framework. It'd be rather ridiculous to try and extract everything.
I believe a team tried it, and I'm not sure what happened, but I don't see Sense apks floating around, so I assume they failed.
What they ARE doing now is porting the full ROM. Porting an entire Sense ROM to work on another device is a lot easier.
So, to answer your question, you will not be seeing Sense ported to GB. Instead, you will see a 2.3 Sense ROM in its entirety being ported.

That's what I was originally hoping for as well, but I did some searching through his thread, and someone had already asked him about that. He said that he didnt believe the benefits were worth his time at the moment, and that he would rather work on integrating the new Sense into his existing Froyo rom. Personally, I have found GB to be much faster, but that is just me. Also, the built in SIP stack has the potential to be nice, if I planned on staying with this ROM long enough to get me a VOIP account.
Short, simple and to the point.

I can deal with that. I appreciate your response. I did not realize that was how it currently worked. I thought Sense was able to be ported. Bummer. Hopefully someone can get their hands on the ROM from the new Incredible HD before too long. That would be SWEET!

That's assuming that the Incredible HD is going to launch with Gingerbread, which is no sure bet.
Sheesh Fiery, why you gotta go and make sense! I hate when people do that! It kills my mood. I sure hope you are wrong. I intend on getting the Inc HD, but by the time I am eligible (June I think), it should have the update anyway. I wish they would put out some info on that phone already, but I fully intend on playing with it at CES in 2 weeks

It kind of makes sense though (no pun intended) for it to launch with 2.3. The Nexus S launched with 2.3, and I'm sure that all higher-end devices in 2011 will be trying to launch with 2.3 as well to keep the competition level. That, and 2.3 on VZW's 4G network would (hopefully) help to level the playing field against *faster* networks like T-Mobile's *4G* network. XD
When is the incredible HD supposed to come out anyway? I plan on holding off on a 4g phone for awhile to enjoy my unlimited data but I'm curious.

The only official word we have received is that they would be showing some devices off at CES, and are planning on releasing up to 6 LTE handsets in Q1. They have said they would have a 4g Moto device in February, and there have been some leaked pics of the Mecha/Thunderbolt/DInc HD, HTC Merge, as well as a Samsung 4g device floating around. Some are speculating that with all the leaks, as well as a site put out there by HTC saying basically that they were first in 4G for Sprint, TMobile, and will be again, that they will show off the devices and at least one, likely the DInc HD will be available as soon as the next day. So I guess that is my long way of saying, hopefully Jan 7.
T-Mobile is not 4g no matter how much they want to think they are
Sent from my Htc Incredible using XDA App
If I recall correctly neither is Verizon LTE or Sprints WiMax. 4G is the second gen LTE and WiMax.
But I want a IncHD so bad. Not even for the not even close to 4g speeds. Seeing as we only just got 3g where I live 2 or 3 years back.
You are both correct, and incorrect. Originally whatever group gets to decide what is the fourth generation said that only the second generations of those technologies were truly 4G, however; now, according to one of the sites I check regularly (I cant remember if it was Gizmodo, TechCrunch,Engadget or all of the above), that group has loosened up a bit and said basically, It is not really 4G, but it kinda is, so we dont care what you call it.
Edit:
Here is that article.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/18/itu-capitulates-admits-that-the-term-4g-could-apply-to-lte-w/
What happens if you take the sense apks from a sense rom, put it in a 2.3 rom, sign and flash? force closes? boot loops? ill try it some day but i have stuff to do for now
Any further update on this question? I know that there are a lot of frankenstein roms out there with aspects of Gingerbread thrown in with the Z Sense 2.2 ports, ie. icons, keyboards, je non se quoi. But I'm certain that there must be some further action that has been taken on an actual GB w/ Sense 2.0 rom.
At the very least, someday soon there should be a stock rom update that can be ported (if the DInc doesn't miraculously get it near the same time that the new 4g devices receive it or debut with it)
There has been a lot of dev's trying to get gingerbread and sense to work but no luck yet....HTC hasn't released a cdma phone with gingerbread yet so its hard to do from scratch

I've noticed that development for this device is alot slower, if you will, compared to the Evo and Evo 3D. I'm glad to see lithid here tho, looking forward to him bringing either AOSP or CM7 to the ET4G. I must say using Touchwiz is much better than Sense (not a sense fan), so this makes waiting easier.
I would take any Rom to play with at this point tho. There's like only 2

Actually, I don't agree; the e3d took about a month to get permanent root; this device was rooted a few days after release..
Now, the release of lots of custom roms is slower than the e3d, but I am sure 30 days from now, this will be corrected.
Sending some emails to your favorite devs asking them to develop for this is probably a good idea too!

Actually, I dont agree
After the evo 3d was unlocked that same day the forum filled with roms. So you have to take into account the time that the evo 3d was ABLE to flash roms and count from there to compare not go from the day it was released. There were no roms for the evo for like a month because there was no s-off and no way to flash roms hence development was slow. But the day revolutionary was released there was at least 10 roms posted in the first 48 hours after. With our epic touch we were able to flash a couple of days after launch. So in comparison we have a lot less roms for the amount of time we were able flash compared to the # roms the evo 3d had in the same amount of time after it was able to flash roms.
I do agree development seems slower. I think another reason why it may be is because a lot of people used their upgrades to upgrade to the evo 3d and cant make the switch yet because it would just be too costly. But once we see the price drop and/or used units going for sale on ebay and CL this will make the device more available to devs who want the phone but right at this moment it's not feasible to get the phone

out of curiosity, how quickly was a stock rom available for the Evo3D?
I'm the type of person that doesn't make any changes unless I can revert back, I didn't root until the stock kernel was available.
also I think that part of the reason development may be a bit slower is that this phone is so much better stock than anything else stock.
Stock + root on this thing is already better (IMO) than any other phone with any other rom.
AOSP and CM7 will be the first roms to be really worthwhile.
On a side note, I'm also a huge fan of Virus.
I think a stock rom was available a day or so after the evo3d was rooted; its hard to remember, because things happened so fast after root with that phone.
Good point about how awe sum this phone is with out root; I was going to root it the first day, but, frankly, after reading all the little quirks people were having initially after rooting, and, the lack or really interesting roms or cm7 right now, I have chosen to wait as well
Lets hope Virus/Myn/Leosright, and Aanikam, and some of the other folks with E3D's get their hands on this phone, or, at least decide to do some roms for it...
No disrespect to the folks that have made the currently available roms/kernels..

I want to say that the official RUU was out before the evo was unlocked but I'm not 100% sure so dont quote me on that. The day my evo 3d was delivered was the day revolutionary was released. So we have been able to flash stuff for about 2 weeks now. In the first two weeks after the evo was unlocked and able to flash there was tons of roms and tweaks (only a few kernels though). So in the first two weeks both phones were flashable there was considerably more development on the evo 3d. I do hope it picks up though I'm waiting for cm 7 so I hope someone from CM picks this phone up so we can get a CM 7 build, if not I'm running it stock until then with adw ex

Mine is, running several different roms. I still have both and it's very noticeable but I am on the stock kernel still. I have no doubts this one will be faster once it's dug into a bit more. While the Samsung gets a better Quad the HTC is much more snappy/peppy.
I haven't tried Zedo's kernel yet though so not sure if it's making a speed difference. There are issues he is still working on with that one. I'm waiting for that one to get all fixed up.

It wouldn't hurt to take into account that this phone is just a mere 2 weeks old and a lot of people are still waiting to receive theirs as they are in a backorder queue. When the 30 days is up, we'll have a better idea how the development will be. It takes time to get developers to a phone, you can't expect them to run straight to Sprint and buy the phone on release day.
It's also worth taking into account that the Evo 3d was the first actually upgraded Hardware platform that had been released with Sprint in almost a year. In that respect the evo 3d had an advantage as their were a lot of users ready to jump ship to a new phone.
It's too bad that Samsprint couldn't get this phone out sooner to be on par with the evo 3d launch. That would have been a site worth seeing and I dont think you would see such heavy development for the 3d, expecially since it shipped with a locked bootloader.

I have a few good older friends who aren't very tech savy and just got a pair of EVO 4G phones.
I would like to put a ROM on there phones that would still be flashy but simplistic at the same time, if that makes any sense. It would be nice to have a ROM that would also allow them to receive OTA updates if there is such a thing ?
Thanks,

Heres one that is a little more customized.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465161
or id say maybe decks since its still super fast and so many tweaks that are done by external apps can be done with in so they dont have to bother with it after initial set up. they can always say its just like the pure google phones than thats flashy but not
I meandered on to the development section and was quite surprised to see such recent ROMS and developers working on a cell phone that is turning 3 years old in 5 months. Many EVO buyers have had their contracts expire and are able to upgrade to a new phone. There are much faster phones out there, with better specs that are possibly more interesting to develop for, because you might reach a larger user base. My question to the Devs is why are you sticking to the original EVO? Don't get me wrong, I am a current original EVO owner myself so by all means, keep up the good work, just curious as to why you stuck to such an old device.
Simple answer is its fun! Its a great way to get practice and many devs have friends in the forum. So why walk away completely? If you still have it, you can test away on things you try to build.

It's actually SDX Developers...and yes the Moment was the "Evo" of it's time, sadly however, it's time has passed. I'm a new convert over to XDA from SDX, having to give last rites to my Moment a month ago. Really only one active ROM still being worked on (UberMoment 1.6 - props to TheTehk17 for hanging in there :good: ). They never got a GB Rom fully functional (CM7 was close), all dev was, and still is, Froyo. Major hardware limitations and lack of support will probably keep any further ROM upgrades forthcoming.
Inherited an OG to use for now - great to see all the work being done! Waiting for the arrival of the S4 or M7 for upgrade, until then enjoying the plethora of ROM's available!
Upon upgrade, I will be passing the OG on to any dev here who will continue to put it to good use!

The devs did a pretty good job porting over Froyo ROMs from the Intercept and Transform, and got those pretty functional. Otherwise, the phone would have been stuck on 2.1 Eclair! As mentioned, they have a somewhat working CM7 - buggy, but it does boot up.! The dev that ported that moved on leaving no one to work out the kinks.
