Having been in Europe for the last week, I tried to get my Dinc2 with CM7 #118 to work on the European GSM networks. I followed the following steps:
1. Switch from CDMA/EvDo (auto) to GSM/WCDMA (auto)
2. Reboot
After waiting for about 15 seconds, the phone showed signs of live and displayed bars! I had GSM voice capability. But I could not get any indication of Data Capability.
I then tried all other GSM settings, which all gave the same result: voice - yes; data - no!
Initially I was thinking that Verizon had not enabled my data settings (I always call them before I travel). So to be sure I first called them back. They confirmed that all settings were OK. Then I reinstalled a different ROM, which had worked for me in the past: Zeus SkyRaider. And voilá I was back in business: voice - yes, data - yes!
After a few days I switched back to CM7, but to no avail: I could not get data services to work on GSM networks.
Anyone similar (or different) experiences while traveling in Europe?

Yes, international data roaming is on. I only see bars at the top of my screen, no sign at all of data capabilities.
You probably need to enter the correct apn for the network your on

I will try that next time I am there. Thanks! But why would I not have to do this on the Zeus Skyraider ROM? That one worked "out of the box".

I have noticed people managed to change their network mode to GSM only mode??? How do you that?? I only have 2 options: WCMDA and GSM/WCDMA auto?? Is this thing vary due to your courier?? Currently I am with 3 Australia. I wish I have the option to switch only to GSM. From experience, it can save you a lot of battery.
If you don't have the option then you can't pick it. I don't know if that means it's been removed or if it's simply because 3 don't offer a 2G network service (GSM mode). They probably have some 2G sharing but only in spots without 3G so you still have the GSM/WCDMA auto mode.
That's the best I can offer since I know that's how it works with 3 over here in the UK where they have only their 3G network. The firmware likely has GSM mode disabled for that reason but wait for more to back me up or prove me wrong.

I have a feeling it could be the ROM or firmware that comes with it has it disabled the GSM only option. My Desire HD is the UK version. I am not sure if the other Australian version (from Voda or 3) have that options. With my original desire (and also using 3), I have that GSM only option available. So I dont think it's because 3 doesnt offer 2G network.

Thanks for the info. I have tested both method...both work. But the only problem, how do we set it permanently?? I mean I have noticed every time you reboot the phone, the setting changes?? and I have to set it back to GSM only??
but even if you could technically switch it to gsm, would it actually make a difference? surely if the actual mobile network is pure 3g and no 2g, then switching on the phone wouldn't change a thing? as its not actually possible to use 2g on 3 network?(because they built network from scratch out of 3g is what they always boast about anyway..)
This is strange. I have an unbranded bought sim free HTC sensation here in the UK which Im using on the 3 network and I dont have the option under network to set it to gsm only. This option should be here on an unbranded handset, and its there on my old Desire which was also bought unbranded sim free when Im using that on the 3 network.
Anyone shed any light on this? I know the work arounds mentioned above, but Im more interested in why the option is missing on my handset.
Cheers
PS I know this is the Desire HD thread but its the only topic I could find on this subject so far.
I don't think it matters, just don't even bother with the settings menu for that in the first place. in the Testing menu just set the radio to either GSM Auto (PRL) or GSM Only. GSM gives more talk time.
Entering in the "secret" menu *#*#4636#*#*, i noticed that the default network mode is GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Aren't two completely different networks (and phone)? Or what that CDMA setting is referring?
Since my GNext is GSM and in my country there is no CDMA network operators, is that the best option regarding the battery life?
I remember that in my previous htc desire, the default network mode was WCDMA preferred (WCDMA different from CDMA), even if i was using GSM auto (PRL) which mean that if the 3g is low it will use the 2g network...and i remember there was nothing about CDMA network
So my doubt is why the Galaxy Nexus GSM doesn't have GSM auto (PRL) or WCDMA preferred as default option? is that a bug?
here a reference about the network mode http://www.google.ie/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=6a327a95211ac789&hl=en
GSM = GPRS (2g), EDGE(2g), UMTS(3g), WCDMA(3g), HSDPA(3g) {Cell Carrier examples: AT&T and T-Mobile}
CDMA = CDMA*(2/3g) EV-DO(3g) WiMax(3/4g) {Cell Carrier examples: Verizon and Sprint}
Now that the general stuff is out of the way, here's my take on the Preferred Network types:
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best.

Id like to know why the options dont stick as well... Just seems stupid to me that they dont stay after you choose them.
I have also been wondering the same thing. On the Nexus One and Nexus S it would default to WCDMA prefered and if I were to force 3G on it then it would stick on a reboot. On the GN if I put it to WCDMA only or GSM only it will revert to the GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) network type. It did this on stock 4.0.2 and it's also doing it on CM9.
In that menu there is something about LTE ram dump too. Is there a little more ram the LTE guys are getting that's hidden on GSM?

GSM auto (PRL) won't stick but WCDMA did for me but I REALLY regret changing it. It caused my SMSC number to change to 00 and I couldn't change it back on my GNex. It took me a while to figure out that the SMSC had changed and it stopped me from sending text messages but I could still receive them. After wiping and flashing a few times I realised and I put the sim card into an old phone and changed the SMSC back and put it back in my GNex and it let me send texts again.

God it was a nightmare yesterday. I did a google search and found the number on vodafone forums for my country. What's your carrier? Even if you have the number maybe you won't be able to put it on your nexus like me but you can try. Another possible solution might be to get a new sim card but I'm not sure if that'll work. I just read it online.

SMSC update
for refenrece about the above problem updating the SMSC i found this link
http://community.windmobile.ca/windmobile/topics/nexus_s_smsc_advanced_menu_options
its for the nexus s, but it works also on our galaxy nexus
so basically with our nexus (also other samsung i guess) through the advanced menu *#*#4636#*#*, u can update the SMSC only putting the encoded value like described in the link above
also the important things are the 2 buttons near the SMSC field:
- the first on the left (nearest the field) mean refresh: basically should load ur actual SMSC (sometimes don't work)
- the second on the right (far from the filed) mean update: so it change ur SMCS with the actual value on the field..so be carefully if the field is empty
(in my language the translation of those button are wrong, and both have the same label..thats why im explaining it )
anyway i suggest to don't play with the *#*#4636#*#* menu at all, unless u have problems
hope this helps some future users

Mobile signal is perfectly fine - I can send and receive calls and SMS. I am running G2Slim 1.6. Radio is the latest - 26.13.04.19_M, but I tried several different radios with no result. I have tried every combination of data roaming/only 2g networks allowed/disallowed. I have talked to the reps at the store and they said everything should be correctly activated as far as the SIM goes and data should be working.
It is entirely possible that this is a hardware problem with my phone - I've been having problems with my WiFi that seem to be caused by hardware. However, data works fine in the U.S. Any ideas? What steps can I take to diagnose this?
In the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* check your settings
You also may want to check if the proper apn is set up

Thank you!
I did not know about this menu, although I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. It gives "No Error" for the reason data is disconnected. Network type is set to WCDMA preferred. I tried toggling DNS check, no difference. Although I can't imagine that would matter, phone has to connect to something before it needs to worry about DNS.
As far as APN's - in the normal Mobile networks menu, when I go to Access Point Names, the list is blank. Perhaps this is significant?
That's your problem, need to add the apn you need. You can find this info by googling it and if you find nothing helpfull there are apps on the market that can do most of the wrok for you

Hi
I have a ATT Note 2 with a t-mobile sim in it with ATT rom/modem/etc. The HSPA worked for like 2 minutes and never worked again. 2g works fine.
Has anyone gotten 3g/3g+ working one ATT note 2 on the tmobile network?

Please advice!

yes didnt work either..
@ vish :
another shoot in the dark, do you think it has a relation with the phone being unable to toggle to 3G / UMTS mode ? will you please flash the t-mo radio back and tried :
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect.

Sorry for the late reply - i tried flashing tmobile model and I got either bootloop or no service. Even with the sim card out.
Any other ideas?
Are you sure you are in a refarmed area? Cause if not you will ONLY get EDGE
^^^ what he said. T-Mobile is refarming their network to be compatible with AT&T's 3G frequencies but only in certain cities right now. Check their website, it tells what cities. They may be testing in your area. Otherwise you'll only get edge because the note 2 can't do what the note 1 did. It's an exynos thing.

Has anyone tried this SIM card release thing to force 3G on t-mobile network on a AT&T Note 2 phone? did it work? or did I misunderstand this post to be a solution to getting 3G/4G on tmobile network?
Please help
Only edge will work. Get a t mobile device or switch to att.
Hey everyone!
So I picked up a tmobile s4 to use on ATT since I read it was the most unlocked due to bands / bootlocker. I unlocked it via the method described on this site via the debug menu.
Popped in ATT sim, everything looked fine initially.
1. I'm only getting 4G in an LTE area. device hasn't picked up any LTE anywhere yet.
2. When I go under "Network Mode" and select "LTE/GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) the signal dies out and it always reverts back to GSM/WCDMA"
3. I've called ATT a few times and triple checked that I'm on an Android LTE data plan, so that's not an issue. ATT techs suggested it could be a device issue and maybe I should take it into their tech center.
4. Tried to set up ATT Visual Voicemail, that failed also.
So can it be a Sim issue? Maybe something on tmobiles side? Since device was never active on their network. A lemon S4?
I've run out of options
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA!
