anyone know if voice data can work simultaneously ?
Only on atnt. Ugh.

I thought with the Verizon LTE devices, being that they have two radios, voice and data do work simultaneously. However, this is where the big battery drain comes in as there are two separate radios running constantly.
HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon does on both 3g and 4g. It has multiple radios.

In the US voice and data work on AT&T, T-MOBILE, and Verizon's LTE network. Voice and data is not possible on CDMA networks.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Not all Verizon LTE phones can pull this off. HTC uses multiple radios to accomplish this on 3g and 4g networks. So far from what I have read the GNex might be lacking the multiple radios. We'll have to wait and see. Fingers crossed...

The HTC ThunderBolt supports the SVDO standard that allows for simultaneous voice and data over a CDMA network. This is achieved by having dual antennas in the device. Unless the Galaxy Nexus will use the same standard by having dual antennas, it will only support simultaneous voice and data when connected to Verizon's LTE network.

If you're referring to the Verizon LTE model, then you'll be able to use voice/data at the same time if you're on LTE. There was no mention of it having svdo for 3G voice/data.

If so then it's a step backwards from the Thunderbolt. I use WiFi hotspot and watch TV on my Galaxy Tab through my Thunderbolt while talking on the phone. If the Galaxy Nexus can't do this then I'm not buying it.

Blame VZW for having a CDMA network, not the Nexus for using it lol.
But just like other LTE phones, if you're on LTE, you can talk and use data at the same time. Because it does have LTE, they probably didn't care to use SVDO 3G for simultaneous voice/data on CDMA.
technically, only in GSM(GPRS/EDGE) you can't use both data and voice at the same time. In anything above 3G, you can.

Does anyone know of a mod or rom that has the ability to keep 3G on during a phone call, when outside of lte range? I could do this on my thunderbolt so I'm sure its possible on the nexus. I couldn't bring much up on the search. Thanks

It works on the Thunderbolt because it has SVDO for simultaneous voice/data over CDMA 3G. The Galaxy Nexus doesn't have this to my knowledge. Its a limitation of CDMA and the chip used.

An SVDO chip set is needed. The galaxy nexus does not have that chip for the CDMA radio
Damn! Thanks though. I guess I have to wait for lte. Hopefully not much longer

I am in the same boat. Verizon's next major 4G roll out is going to be in March. Hopefully my city is included. I know its been over a year since they've been upgrading towers around town. Shouldn't be too much longer

I believe it's only been on the Thunderbolt and Rezound so far.
I am interested in the ONE-X, but only i fI have the one with the Tegra 3 processors. I'd like that because they are the same as my Asus TF201. My question is can I get a GSM ONE-X to work with AT&T's network? I know it won't be LTE, but would it at least work on the H+ network? I have the Inspire 4G now and I believe h+ will be good enough if i can get it.

Yeah you will as long as your in a good ATT coverage area.
I am in NY and am getting about 6-10mbps download speeds.

So just to clarify, are you getting 3g, 3.5g, or 4g? (and arent 4g/lte the same thing for that matter?)

No I dont think 4g and LTE are the same.
I am getting HSPA+ speeds using ATT. ATT considers HSPA+ to be 4G.
LTE i believe is completely different than 4g.
What AT&T and T-Mobile (and Verizon for that matter) refer to as 4G isn't technically 4G. Legally by ITU definitions only LTE, WiMax2, etc. are truly "4G" technologies.
That said, the Intl 1X supports all the frequencies necessary to operate on AT&T other than LTE (for that you need the neutered dual core US version). All I did last night was create a new APN in Network Settings for broadband speeds (I know it has an AT&T APN in there by default but I wanted to ensure the settings were correct).
I followed this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69lHUIkEOIE
Is there a way to only have 4g lte and the radio for calling and texting or do you have to have 3g on as well. I have perfect 4g and don't need 3g on but I do need to text and all I see is 4g/cdma which turns up to me 3g and Lte only, can't send messages. Any helps appreciated.

You did not specify what carrier you are on. If you are on verizon the answer is no, verizon still uses 3g for voice. I am not even sure this question applies to any other carrier except maybe sprint.

How would it? They are separate NATIONAL carriers, not regional.

So you wouldn't be able to have say, lte on and 1x radios on? This wouldn't be more batter efficient than 3g and lte?

That has nothing to do with it. There for a time, Sprint was piggybacking off of Verizon to actually have decent coverage. This was EvDo and voice only however. This is still the case, but you will not be able to do the same with LTE.

1x and EvDo are on the same radio. So you couldn't shut off just 3G, and the OS won't let you do LTE only either.
Nope.

Because the phone sending voice and messages through the GSM/CDMA/WCDMA (Depending on availability).
The 4G specifications arent complete as for yet, only the data mechanism has been approved.

Yes it is. I do it all the time. Depends on the area though
You can't surf with 3G and talk....4G is separate from the voice stream.

Yes you can do voice + data at the same time if you're on LTE or Wi-Fi.
You can't do it when just on 3G.
yep, just not on 3g
That will be a nice option to have. Not that I actually talk much on my phone lol.
I am thinking purchasing this phone in the next week or so and I have a question for those that already have it. I have had people (even from sprint) tell me that you can use the data with wifi OFF and place a phone call at the same time and some people (even from sprint) tell me you can't. Basically can you download a app while in a phone call with wifi OFF? thanks for your help.
Not on 3G. I hear its possible on LTE but I don't have it yet in my area.

Also articles like this one and other posts like this one. There is a 14 day return policy with Sprint so if you're in an area that has LTE, you can test. If it doesn't work, return it within the 14 days and you're good.

If somebody had a gs3 in one hand and a note II in the other and explained everything about them, and the last thing they told me was that I cant post on my wall while talking on the phone with the note II. I would still buy the note II with all the features and power this phone has.
From what I gather the reason this only works on LTE or Wifi is that the data is used from those, the 3g is used for talk during the call so it can use its secodn set of of antennas for data.
There are other phones with Sprint that have dual cdma chips in them (ie LG Viper)

The 3g uses the same network as voice (ie CDMA) only one can use it at a time, either voice or data. However 4g wimax and 4g lte use a different network so therefore you can surf and talk simultaneously. Unless the phone has dual cdma chips in them to do 3g and talk simultaneously which few of sprints phones are equipped with.
