Download Crutch Lite spyware? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently on SFR 1.2, and Lookout just scanned my phone and has flagged Download Crutch as a spyware. As far as I know it's always been in my phone since I first flashed the ROM, and after many previous scans has never raised suspicions from the Lookout app. I've never really been sure what this app does anyway ... it always shows up with Package Installer when I attempt to install an APK. Can I get rid of this? Looked around and saw no mention of this, so in case I didn't look hard enough, sorry :3
Edit: can't post screenshot, but the security warning more or less reads: this app runs in the background recording messaging, gps and call history, then sent to a remote server. *gasp*

Just got the same LookOut warning, anyone?

Sounds like a false positive. Download Crutch Lite is nothing but a tiny shim to let the stock browser download any file.

Would it be safe to remove it? I don't really use the stock browser. And I noticed I can't simply uninstall since its a system app. Wanna make sure I don't mess with anything ^^ btw thanks for the reply. Was sure I would have to worry about this all day before getting an answer.

Yes, it is safe to remove. If it's in /system/app, use something like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (etc.) to remove it.

You should be fine to remove it. Heck, if you find you do need it, you could always reinstall it later. If you don't even use the stock browser, removing it shouldn't have any effect on you whatsoever.
Edit: The above answer wasn't there when I started typing lol.

My thoughts exactly. Either its just an erroneous report ... or its just now that Lookout has caught up with the true sinister nature of Download Cruth. Would sure hope it's the former and not the latter. Don't like the idea I've been carrying this for months being its unsuspecting victim

Couldn't a 'shim' also be called a rootkit or a malicious MITM program in terms of infosec? From my understanding of how this works, it appears to be a transparent proxy. Perhaps a tcpdump should be done on a phone with and without this installed to verify that no suspicious connections are being made to ANY server when installed. If not, great. If so, then there is a serious problem.

Brian from Lookout here. Our flagging Download Crutch Lite as spyware is a false positive. Our most recent malware sigs has it listed by mistake and we're pushing out new signatures asap to correct it.
Sorry for the scare.

No, and there's no proxy. What DCL does is fill in unused file associations with itself, thus allowing the browser to download.
Thanks for the update, Brian.

[Q] how are these ads in my notification tray happening??

So first of all I've never had this happen to any of my other android phones phones before but as soon as i got my bell galaxy nexus (gsm) I've been getting at least 2 of these ads( telling me I've won a prize) pop up in my notification bar. I have already done a factory reset and loaded different roms and I'm still getting them!! I also did malware checks and got nothing
any ideas?
I had something similar. It was the MP3 downloader V7. It contains 'AirPush'
There is an app on the market that searches for the AirPush component & reveals what Apps you have on your phone that uses it!
Please let us know what you find.
Had the same crap happen to me today, would like to know how to stop this crap.
You downloaded an app that uses this as their form of ads. Only way to stop it is to remove the app.

I've never had any ad notifications. It's something you downloaded.
Airpush detector or Addons detector from the market.
It's your own fault for downloading **** to your phone..
i downloaded the 'airpush detector' it found that the app 'easy mp3 downloader' was the problem!
Downloaded airpush and it does not find anything, I only got one stupid txt claiming I won something, if I get anymore I will dig deep into it, thanks for the suggestions.

Any user experience or suggestions?

However with that being said i wouldnt go as far as downloading a anti virus for ur phone as long as ur careful what attachement ur opening as well as what ur downloading.

Don't install some rogue app from an unknown publisher that has three downloads and you will be fine?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
i have Avast installed
but it's frozen, so it's not running
I use avast also since it has a scanner for your SD card. I don't know how well it actually works but I haven't had any problems just yet.
I was using something called LBE Guard (I think that's its name). I believe that it lets you decide what each app can and can't access (Like Go Keyboard accessing the internet).
I've also heard they can wreak havoc on some legitimate apps that access system files through su or on app killers, but I've also heard app killers aren't good for the phone so I'm still up in the air.

I'm using avast as well. Its actually found a few malware apps here and there. So for that purpose alone, i guess it does the trick. To each his own I guess.
I think being vigilant in what apps are accessing is crucial, but sometimes your in a hurry and you just don't care to read something, and that's when something will sneak by you.
I've tried different ones and I like Avast best so far.
The UI Is pretty slick, Once installed everything is fairly detailed and breaks down categorically things that might be worth looking at IE: Privacy
What apps can :
track location
read identity info
access messages
access contacts
access accounts
change secure settings
access web pages
It will give you the number of apps in each category and then its happy hunting from there.
but again best thing just check it out for yourself.
Here is a scenario - ROM manager by clockwork is tagged as suspicious by antivirus app!
Antivirus apps are for idiots. I hear this crap every time some moron mentions android.
If somehow by freak accident you contract a virus, you deserve it. Im not saying theyre non existant, but theyre non existant. Obviously if we have to hack and break a phone manually to access files, a simple apk wont do the trick, hence gingerbreak... And if youre rooted, then hopefully you have enough intellegence or knowledge to keep your phone clean.
Sorry if this offends you, i sincerely dont care.

I guess it depends what you use. I had a live wallpaper that was causing problems. This at least found it for me. Rom manager has never popped up as problematic. Go figure. Im all for snake oil if im not paying for it. To each his own again. Pass judgement at your discretion. In the end do what ever you want. Your phone. Your experience. Your pseudo piece of mind. Some folks don't give a crap, others are OCD and the rest fall inbetween.
"Stay thirsty my friends."
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
One thing to remember Antivirus programs are not just ANTI-VIRUS, they are designed to detect any program that has excessive access to the file system and/or memory, or that attempt to modify stock system code, which is one of the reasons ROM Manager gets tagged, it is able to modify your boot partition.
There are malicious apps on the market, and they don't always get caught by Google before they get out, so it does not take a genius or a moron, to get one, it can just happen ....
Antivirus apps are a double edged sword, they can save your ass, or prevent you from doing something you actually want to do , as with most things in life, they should be used in moderation ....
I personally would rather have a AV app that is a little over zealous, than one that ignores a potential threat ...
The biggest annoyance on android right now is Air-push ads , while not malicious they are annoying, even more so when the publisher does not inform you that they are the "ad supporting" part of the app ...
So IF you are app happy, and install tons of apps, an AV app may be a good thing for you ....
Call me paranoid, but I usually don't install an app from a NEW publisher that has not been on the market at least 30 days, I usually check and see what other apps are put out by a publisher as well ... IF you only see ONE or TWO apps by a NEW publisher, then you might think twice, until reviews start flowing in ...

Adfree Android not blocking ads within Dolphin HD

I'm not sure if it's a problem with my phone or the apps themselves. Does anyone know what I can do to remedy this problem?
Also sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong forum.

my experience with adfree is, that this app filters not all ad´s. but a lot of. I think it is important what information is inside the host files which you must download. Maybe it is a good idea that you renew this file every day. Try it.

If you want Ad-free app to block apps, then you must be download n installing the host files regularly...
Everyday, new adds are posted and Ad-free doesn't recognize that automatically...
So, open the app, select BOOT NORMALLY and select "DOWNLOAD & INSTALL HOSTS"
That shud keep those pestering ads away...
I found when using it that it also blocked web sites from loading like mediafire... Think because it its ad heavy.so you may find it causes other issues.

I've been using it for quite a while as well. Best one I've seen to far and even speedup some of my apps as they don't have to load ads from other sources. LOVE IT.
I've switched to Adaway. This is much better! I have one complaint, but it's a minute one. The ads are gone but the banners where they were are still there. Instead of an ad it just shows a message saying something about "not able to load." does anyone know how to get rid of that? It's not a huge issue but it'd be nice if it was gone.

Most Android adblockers modify the hosts file to do the adblocking.
Sounds like the world is ending in here...
It's really not that big of a deal >.>
Android is open. The store is not. You can do whatever with Android, you just wont be getting it from their store. I don't know why everyone is so upset.
Considering that hosts blocking only works if you have root, I really don't see how this is a problem. If you can root your phone, you can install third-party apks without an issue.
Still, a *****ly move, but Google does make all of their profits selling ads. It is probably AdBlock that killed the fun, since it semi-worked (WiFi only) for non-root users.

I mean, I do hate the ones that get pushed as fake notifications with some of the crapware you can get on the market, but I don't consider the regular ones obtrusive... And let's remember, ad revenue is the bread and butter for Google, and a lot of the developers who offer their apps for free...
here's the link for ad-away. i prefer this one since you can customize your lists easily.

It probably does run in the background on boot, unles you AutoStart it off.
On the stock-based ROMs, there's a background service called "SNS" (IIRC) that has the Facebook logo as its icon. This app probably uses that service. SNS can be safely frozen.

IIRC, SNS cannot be disabled via Manage Apps....It must be "frozen" (disabled) via a root tool like Titanium Backup.

I hate how they keep cramming FB and Twitter down our throats. If I wanted to let my friend know that I just took a dump, I'd call him on the phone like normal people.
I am glad to see an even greater number and diversity of apps coming to android, and specifically the Note2. That said, Facebook Home will never have an opportunity to afflict my Note2.
Would be promising if it weren't made by Facebook. The app alone is lucky to still be installed.
