[Q] I'm torn. Which version you buying? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm so torn.
On one hand I can pick up the GN on Verizon through work and ditch my personal tmo bill...
Or use my upgrade on T-Mobile and keep as I am.
Benefits have having two phones helps alot though like I can be sending emails while talking. Or screwing around while on conference calls. Or using one while charging another.
Benefits of using one boils down to saving money but I don't know if I like work checking up on my calls. Plus while we basically have unlimited minutes and data, they don't have a SMS plan... which I typically use over 1000 a month. I could use IM more... but not with everyone. I usually get a call when I text alot (100-200).
As far as the actual hardware, I'm thinking the GSM will be more popular with devs. Sure the hardware should be the same but I don't want a bastard version like the Tmo SGS2. I think the differences will just be drivers but who knows.
Are they gonna have 2 forums for each model or just this one? I guess no one knows how different they'll be and if there would be a need.
So if you were in my position and had an option to go with Verizon, save some $80 each month but at the cost of SMS/MMS... or wait and just pick it up for T-Mobile and continue life as normal?

It depends on how much you want to pay. At this point there is no word that you will be able to upgrade with T-Mobile in the USA. So far it seems that the only way you can purchase a Galaxy Nexus in the US is with Verizon. The rumor is that it is a Sixty day exclusive period with Verizon. With the current release date rumors we have that will place it at the end of January. Hell me may see phones being updated by then (OK that is a joke). If you want to import it will cost you around 800 and you will not get warranty that is usable and T-mobile will not support the Device. To be honest getting the Verizon Model is your best bet. You will get them blazing fast LTE and soon MMS with Google Voice. I think I will be waiting to January.

Port your current cell from T-Mobile to Google Voice, then just use the SGN on verizon. With google voice you'll be able to text for free and you can use it to make all your personal calls. Which means the numbers that show on your bill (that the company can see) won't be to see the actual numbers you are calling. I use GV and don't recognize any of the outgoing #s on my bill, plus you'll save $*

I've Google voice before but I don't know how it handled texts. If my personal friends only have my "Google voice" number and text me... it could be a mess.
Supposedly Google Voice is better supported in ICS.
As far as waiting or price.. I can wait and plan to anyway. I don't fully trust Samsung as a phone maker. I also am not buying it at full price. Period. My whole scheme for the past was to make sure I'd be eligible for discounted pricing.

re: tittle
i'll suggest the 32 GB version, every app / game you see are getting bigger and bigger by the day

No unlimited LTE is a huge factor for me.

Well I just confirmed that my company added Unlimited SMS to the packages so thats something I don't have to worry about.
I travel all over the US and while I love my Tmobile service locally, it usually screws me when I go anywhere (outside of big cities of course).
My logic is Tmobile 4G is basically 3G which is better then nothing when I travel. LTE I'm unsure about but it can always be disabled. Unfortunately all I have is a blackberry and I can't seem to figure out how to do a speed test on it (3G). I only pull down 2-3mpbs at my house and in my city on my 4G-capable LG G2x.
So it appears I will be ordering the GN on Verizon and killing my personal account. Although I was thinking more about Google Voice and maybe porting my Personal number but using Google Voice as my work number (since I only use it for calls).
I haven't used Google Voice for many calls but does it degrade the quality of voice or cut in and out, or is it just a forwarder service? (A little off track)
Also no one mentioned resell value. I'm sure the GSM version will have a larger resell value?

Of course the gsm version will have higher resale value. Thats the way its been and i dont see anything in verizons future that could possibly change the valuation of gsm phones.

True. But in weighing my options, it didn't occur to me right off the bat. But saving $80 a month justifies that for me.

VZW, only because its the only company that works at this damn base

I have an HTC Hero on Sprint (running CM7.1 of course), and I can't decide if I want to take the economic hit and switch to Verizon for the GNex. It's the only new phone I want, and Sprint seems to have banked everything on pleasing iPhone lemmings. It would be nice to get some answers from somebody in the States about this device.

Yes, its just a forwarder service. At one point, summer 2010 I think, GV required a data connection to connect calls and some people complained of the call quality, but that was fixed/updated. I use GV as my primary # and I haven't noticed any issues.

My company has military contracts that require us to visit bases across the US. VZW seems to be the only one that works properly.

Touch Pro 2 (GSM vs CDMA) ATT vs Verizon

Is there a CDMA hardspl? Can Verizon phones be flashed?
These phones are now just being released to Carriers
Verizon has the phone for $199
Sprint / ATT are expected to charge $299
Because I am a noob and had a tilt previously CDMA vs GSM wasn't an issue, my 2 year contract expires in a few days.
Will ROMS be cross compatible or GSM only or CDMA only?
Anyone have experience with differences in internet speeds?
Im a UK GSM user. Heres what i can tell you off hand.
Check the Rhodium CDMA forum to see if there is a HardSPL (I dont think so, yet)
$100 dollars is a lot of monies
Not cross compatible, dont do it. Dont think about it, im sure bad things happen.
No idea about internet speeds.
Me personally? GSM Model, $100 is a lot but there are far more GSM users on XDA devs therefore far more things to play about with. This phone is a toy for me, i dont need it but it occupies me. You chose!
Actually $349.99 for Sprint and T-Mobile
AT&T not listed as of yet, I will try to barter it for $199 when it comes out
Verizon actually looks very nice, but knowing them they usually block alot of stuff on their device or charge extra for things that should be free...
ATT is the way to go for me atleast...you get a wider support if its a gsm phone vs. cdma
The reason why verizon's TP2 is cheaper is because they require you to have a data plan for as long as you own the phone. the data plan is $29.99 a month. Thats $360 extra a year. I dont think spring requires a data plan which is why theirs is more expensive.
Verizon & Sprint = CDMA & GSM (first world phone for them cept BB an Nextel) Uses MSA 7601 Chip (Sprint's add on Data is 15 bucks WIN WIN with Sprint)
AT&T = GSM only and poor expensive data Network - Use's MSA7200 Chip < FAIL!

Sorry, but Sprint also charges you for a data plan for as long as you have the phone. However, I'm not sure whether they lock you into it for the duration of the contract or not, but who gets a smartphone without data these days?

The AT&T network is consistently the fastest. It only lags slightly behind Verizon in coverage, too.

I know I should research this but do you know the differences between both chips. I am sure people on this thread are interested as well. Any clock speed differences or is it just the carrier hermaphrodite ability?

I'm gonna have to seriously disagree with this. This only applies in big cities. Verizon has better overall coverage and better broadband coverage. At&t also has HORRID customer service. Before At&t took over I would've agreed with this but At&t screwed everything up.
On the note of the one i would buy I would buy the Verizon or Sprint one based on the messed up keyboard design that at&t continues to go with.
I dont know about horrid customer service, It can be bad at times, but I had a tilt and warranty exchanged it twice and got a fuse. I think playing dumb with att will get you where you want to go and more info than you were looking for, Data coverage always varies upon where you live, I have lived in the sticks of upper michigan for a while now, NO 3G but never a dropped call and I mean never When I was in a bigger city with my fuse my data speeds were impressive but every time I went ut of range of a tower and conected to another it dropped my call, which is utter bull. So If your looking to buy a phone check out the internal specs on the device, see what can be unlocked and flashed to your liking and look at the device to see if it is aesthetically pleasing to your eye not someone elses, if you like the way it looks and what its got in it buy it. But just from my point of view dont buy CDMA having a sim card rocks you can put it into any phone and bam! new phone! Well any compatible phone but there are a lot of them. CDMA phones are a carriers way of shoving a cactus up you a** and telling you to like it.

Former Qualcommer here, and was involved in this, at least from the finance perspective.
The chips are identical in function. The only difference between the two of them were that the 7601 chips had a power save function disabled to be in compliance with a broadcom ruling on the 686 patent infringement case. This has long since been settled and the two companies are at peace with each other. It was only an issue for chips being imported into the USA from Singapore.

THANK YOU!!! I'm considering the leap to Verizon. I would definitely like to know what you think of the device. What the removal of the ctrl key to add another message key. I really thought that was dumb...
Dont forget that if you have AT&T's family plan, you can ditch the data plan for the TP2 and add medianet for the dumb phone for $15 then swap SIM chip. Now you have TP2 with unlimited data plan for only $15.

Absolutely wonderful!! The screen on this thing is simply beautiful, and the speed and smoothness of TF3D is quite an improvement of the TP. Overall, the BEST ppc that I have laid eyes on and I enjoy using it everytime I pick it up....enjoy looking at it too. I highly reccomend it!!

Hmmm I was expecting a comparison to the WWE edition. The comparisons to the TP is what i already know but thanks. I had the TP and the Xperia and no doubt that the TP2 is by far better than those two. It is the greatest winmo device i've ever used and it had the best stock rom i've ever used as well. Thats why i'm thinking about making the switch to cdma. I like to be able to change phones as much as I want thats why i stuck with At&t.
well I'm sure you know about the GSM capabilities and the Verizon sim card already installed in the phone

[Q] Leaving Sprint, and my Epic, new phone options. (Suggestions Greatly Appreciated)

Hey all,
First off, I love my Epic, and I will be sad to have to switch to a new carrier, but Sprint is too darn expensive, and Cincinnati Bell is offering cellphones (and a bunch of internet and landlines for our company) plus massive minutes and data for a tiny fraction of what only a few of us would pay for our personal Sprint bills... so naturally, we are moving.
Did I mention we can pick ANY phone from Cincinnati Bell's current or upcoming line-up to receive..... for FREE?
The two 4g phones they have right now are the HTC Panache and the Huawei Ascend X .
They also have a Samsung Vibrant available, which I understand is a Galaxy S phone nearly identicle to our Epic, but without the 4g or the keyboard.
Currently, I am leaning towards the HTC, from all the nice things I heard about the company's handsets in general, and moreso because I have heard zip about the Huawei and it seems a bit chinsey. ( I should add here that he gave us about 4 of the Huaweis to play around with for a bit to test out coverage and data speeds. ) The Huawei is a bit awkward to hold, as it is sharp and thin, whereas I am used to the brick of the Epic in my pocket.
What I ask of all of you is this: Do you have any suggestions on which handset I should grab from these guys? (Remember: It's being given to us, FREE) If so, why? In general, I am trying to either get as close to my Epic experience as possible, or to exceed it. I will miss the keyboard, but I am OK with loosing it.
For the record, I am rooted on my epic with CWM3 and running the latest Frozen Syndicate Mod (and LOVING it ), so ease of rooting, stability and availabilities of quality mods are certainly factors. ... I've just never heard ANYTHING about Huawei and there seems to be a bunch of different kind of info out there for the Panache (It's also call the Glacier and mytouch... I think?)
There you have it! Any suggestions would be killer.
NOTE: I do have access to the 4g Huawei right now, if anyone would like pictures or reviews of it, impressions etc, and I also have the chance soon to get my hands on literally any of the other handsets in their inventory to test out (the Panache, it seems is coming out on Friday). Hopefully I will be able to get a hand on that a bit early, and if so, I'll def. post some info. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, let me know, and also if anyone wants me to grab a given phone for a test run to review on here, I'm more than happy to try!
Thanks!

like keyboards? where are those phones. that htc look like a mytouch slide. does it have one?
Sprint too expensive sorry but your nuts. Ever heard the statement you get what you pay for. If you make the switch I GUARANTEE YOU WILL BE BACK. Why would you even consider a local company next to a national company just sounds ridiculous. They have to throw all those extra incentives at you because their service blows.

Second: Between myself, my fiance and my mother, we have a 1500 minute shared plan + "unlimited" data and the extra 9.99 / month for my epic 4g data. We average between 325 and 400 per month.
The plan they are offering us gives us 5 4g phones, unlimited data and 3000 minutes, all for under 300 dollars.
In terms of service, I've never been a huge fan of sprint, I rarely have anything more than 2 bars of 3g coverage, and in many places less. Their 4g network in this area is abysmal, also.
In any case, I was asking about which of those phones people thought to be equivalent or superior to my current phone, not about whether I should switch. I have been continually disappointed with sprint service for years, this is just the final nail in the coffin.

The HTC page you linked states it's already on Gingerbread, the other is still Froyo. You should do your research on how often/if that phone gets upgrades. Basically find out which phone is closest to end-of-life.
To the guy who called him nuts for dropping a national carrier for a local: To each their own man. The OP found something that works for his needs. What's the issue? Roaming charges? It's an assumed cost of doing business when jumping to a local carrier.

Get the Panache, its the same phone as the Mytouch 4G without the god awful mytouch logo.
I voted for other because nothing was not an option.
I have had a great experience with Sprint and don't plan on leaving when my contract is up.
You shoulda got 3 unlimited everythings for cheaper than your shared plan duh. But if sprint in your area is not as good than that's a different matter. I've been with sprint for 8 years and they are excellent
I suppose I should also mention that along with this we are overhauling all of our business land lines, internet, dedicated internet/phone lines for security and camera etc and cinbell is offering one mega-package for us etc. The plan details are apples to oranges I'd imagine.
Screen size = Huawei (4G)
Hardware = Samsung (no 4G)
Roms = HTC (4G)
Voted "Other" because non of those options are > the Epic all around.
Looked through the phones and I would go with the Panache. It has Gingerbread, more RAM than the Ascend (768MB vs 512MB) and it has 4G, which the Vibrant does not. The Ascend concerns me a bit...it just came out, and it has Froyo on it. Who knows if and when it would get Gingerbread and a few places I see reviews for it refer to it as "low-cost" and "low-end". Not to say it doesn't have a lot of features, but that is how it is referred to (Which on the low-end of the phone market, the phone rates well) If you are getting the phones for free, I would think the HTC would be the winner for you. Cincinnati Bell looks to have good plans and good national coverage... I don't think you will be disappointed. Best of luck to you!
I would really use the loaner you have for awhile.. I myself had cincinnati bell and the signal was horrible all over the west side of town and northern ky.. I have three friends who jumped into cincy bells low rates they advertised.. And really in the end they are still paying more that the sprint bill.. But if you are on a huge corporate deal price will be cheaper.. But those friends are constantly asking me to text so and so or call someone cause they all constantly have signal issues.. So I would def check that the signal is good in the areas you most frequent. just giving some personal experience. But if the signal is there for you jump on that good deal..
Ever consider flashing to a prepaid unlimited plan?
yeah im pretty sure sprint is among the cheapest and has some of the best phones, service, and coverage. only verizon bats spint on the coverage. im am on a family plan with three phones, unlimited everything, 1400 minutes i believe, and 4g for my epic. it totals to about $120 something a month.
my dad on the other hand has verizon. he just bought the new iphone, unlimited everything, and 1400 minutes too. he pays about $75 a month. 4g for verizon is like $20 or $30 (i cant remember). thats outrageous compared to the $10 a month for 4g on sprint.
i really suggest sitting down, working out a budget, working out a reasonable phone plan to work with that budget, compare different phone services, and research phones for each. i think youll find that sprint is among the best and cheapest.

Switching to a Cheap Plan

Well, I just switched my plan over to prepaid 100 minutes a month and unlimited text/data for $30/mo. I thought I would mention how I did it in case people were curious. Actually this is not the way I did it, but the way I should have done it. T-mobile reps don't seem to have a very good flowchart for figuring this one out, unfortunately.
Starting Point: In a contract on an unlimited plan.
1. Order a $2 prepaid simcard from t-mobile.com. Buying this sim card is the only way to be eligible for the "Wal*Mart Deal."
2. Once you have it, call up and explain that you have purchased a prepaid simcard online and that you want to cancel your contract and switch over to prepaid.
3. Once this is done, immediately call back (do not pay anything yet) and when you talk to someone tell them you have the sim card and that you want to activate the $30/mo plan with unlimited data. They should be able to get your sim card number from you and based on that, switch you over.
Note: You may experience some disruption in service doing this. However, in my case I am saving around $65/mo. from the previous plan, and I am using GrooveIP with Google Voice to make up the difference. This app is free with Wi-Fi calling, and costs $5 to enable 4G calling via a google voice number.
Alternatively, you can transfer your number to Google Voice for a fee of $20, and set everything up that way. If you do this, once the number transfers all you have to do is do a web activation with the new sim card on your phone. However, from what I can tell there are some downsides to using google voice now:
1. Your [Phone] button will dial out on the "wrong" number, as opposed to GrooveIP dialing out on the "wrong" number.
2. Your [Message] button will send texts from the "wrong" number as well, so you will have to send texts through Google Voice and will need data to do so.
For me, I do mostly texting, so keeping my number with the phone made sense. It is too bad this isn't more seamless. Maybe one day the carriers will pull their head out of their butts and stop trying to segment our service in stupid ways e.g., voice/text/data. Probably not.
I am a bit curious if anyone else has gone to this plan, or if anyone else uses the GV/GrooveIP combo in creative ways. GrooveIP seems to work pretty well here, although I do notice a bit of a lag in conversation.

I started my Walmart deal a different way...
Went and bought a g2x off Craigslist. Went to Walmart bought their cheapest prepaid phone ($30) then took it to the counter where the wireless rep (not the associate) asked how I wanted it setup. I pulled out the g2x and said I wanted that $30 unlimited data / 100min deal, he said good idea and did it all for me. Few days later I ported my number from sprint to T-Mobile, took about 5 hours.
I then setup a google voice with a new number and use my phone number on my phone and GV and groove IP with the google number. I use it way less for texting then my actual phone, so I chose not to port it to google. I use groove IP on wifi and 4g, does passable on 4g for quick calls or automated like pharmacy or something like that.
So that was about 6 months ago, going fine. Traded the g2x for a t989 and now I have water mic lol. I use groove IP at home and I only use minutes on incoming calls or if I can't get a decent 4g connection for groove IP.
Oh there's a 5 gig cap for 4g. I never broke 2 gb so far.

Thanks for the rundown.
Where does the ETF figure into this? I'm planning to do this too soon, but I'm expecting to pay T-Mo $200 to do it.

What is ETF? Yeah I paid the $200 because I had almost 2 years left on my contract. But at a savings of $65/mo that paid off pretty fast. I tried to find a sim card at walmart and the cheapest phone they had was in the $140 range. Much better for me at least to get the sim card online.
This is much easier coming from another carrier. Then you can do what pio did basically and just web-activate the sim (or get a phone at walmart if you need to get a GSM phone). Once activated you just call tmobile and transfer the number. Doing it within T-mobile is harder because (1) there is a wall between the contract and prepaid business (2) the prepaid customer service is poor, and (3) you have to jump through some hoops to be eligible for the promo.
Here's the sim card link, which can be found if you know where to look, or just search for "sim card": http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit
Also, a bit off topic but just noticed that Virgin USA is apparently getting an iPhone and has an HTC EVO option as well. Not bad for their plans, which start at $35/mo with unlimited data. I ruled this out because I already had a GSM phone I liked. And because I think tmobile has a better network (could be wrong about this).

The plan is a Walmart exclusive prepaid plan. $30 you get unlimited data with 5gb 4g Iimit, unlimited text 100 minutes. Have to be done at walmart or at least through them.
Just saw the addition a few posts back, yes its a lot easier to switch from another carrier. I had to pay a pro rated $90 ETF to sprint when I ported the number it cancelled my service with them. I just got a phone off Craigslist then bought a cheapy prepaid phone at Walmart to get the sim, I was getting stuff from T-Mobile getting just a sim and they wanted me to buy a new phone, and only a limited few for pre paid. I saved about $350 in sprint service cancelling when I did and changing over. Plus sprint changed to LTE which made my evo worthless and I only got some 3g and mostly edge data where I normally go everyday. Now I pay a third for service and get 4g in most locations. I wouldn't have switched if sprint had EVER gave me 4g in my state considering I paid for it every month, then switched to LTE and left every wimax phone owner having to buy a new phone. /rant

Strange, for me it was difficult to get, but the key was that I had to either have bought a phone from wal mart or bought the prepaid activation kit from the website. I am pretty certain it should work, because in part of my drama of switching over, they told me to activate my new sim card via the web and I was able to select the plan, even though it wasn't tied to my other account at that point. (Turns out this was the WRONG thing to do, as I discovered after I had done it, and they had to go switch credits around between the accounts to fix it.)

I ported my number to Google voice. Paid the $20 fee and use Talkatone. Started with Groove IP but lagged even on wifi. Talkatone voice quality is impressive; the only con is the dialer integration.

I use grooveIP as well and the only major downside is that I now have 2 different numbers. I have never heard of porting my number to GV, but to make it clear, porting my number to GV will make it so I have to text using data? But Does this mean I don't have to use grooveIP for making calls?

I agree talkatone is a one of kind.. tried groove IP but have few issues..as for porting your number.. Google is willing to port your number if you want to use your carrier given number as your Google voice number.. it is possible for a fee of $20 and in return cancel your contract..so carrier may charge you on that am not sure...yes in order to use anything Google be it voice for calls or text or Gmail you need a source of data connection either wifi or mobile data connection to be able to use Google effectively..yes you need an app like groove IP or talkatone in conjunction with Google voice to make calls...its not complicated as stated..

I've been on this plan for a couple of months and have tried out both talkatone and groove ip. When I make calls from those apps, I am not charged any minutes. But whenever someone calls my Google voice number, I am charged minutes. Does anybody now why?

T-Mobile $30 Plan in Houston, TX
I've just finished my first month of the T-Mobile $30 plan and I am very happy. I am in the northwest part of Houston and I get great data speeds (generally 3Mbit-15Mbit download speeds). At my work location, I've gotten up to 17Mbit download. (see attached) I expect to be using 80-200 minutes per month, so I should always save $30-$40 per month compared to my old Sprint plan (Sprint data reliability for me was terrible.)
Here is what I'm using:
Samsung Galaxy S2 T989
ROM: DARKSIDE.UCLE2_BETA06_TDJ
Radio: Tmo_SGH-T989_VK1_ICS_Radio_MOD
I've been using the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan with groove IP & Google voice for about 4 months now. I ported my number to Google voice & there is an option to have your native dialer to use that number on out going calls. All texts are handled through the Google voice app (witch doesn't handle mms) so that's a bummer.
But here is a tip, there is an app called auto ap in the play store that automatically puts your phone in air plane mode & starts groove ip whenever you connect to a wifi network. So in my case when ever I'm home or at work all my incoming calls are free. It also really helps my battery life.

Need Samsung Galaxy S3 Sprint help

Hello,
We are long time Verizon customers but have had enough of their capricious attitude, the insane recent price hikes and limited data plans. (although we currently have unlimited data). However, my husband's phone was stolen about a month ago and while we're using an old phone for the moment, we need to upgrade it for him. I like Sprint's current business model of unlimited everything (& we plan to sign up for everything data plus from the employees referral to save a bit and get more minutes). We also like the fact that Sprint is a green company and supports more things that we believe in. Yeah, I know that we're giving up the network for a bit until Sprint's Network Vision is completed but I think we can live with that.
Here's my dilemma. There are no Sprint owned stores in our area, just third party stores and only a couple of those so I can't buy through them &get everything data plus... Which is fine because they don't know much at all. I went there to try to see both the Evo 4G LTE side by side with the Samsung Galaxy S3...both working. Unfortunately, they didn't have a working model of the S3 but they opened up a package so I could at least hold them next to each other.
My concern most of all is with the radio quality and reception. I have some serious medical issues so being able to call for help is a frequent need. I took my current phone (HTC Rezound), my husband's Motorola DROID X, and the Evo LTE, and did side by side comparisons of the radios. My Rezound came in top at -80 give or take a few both directions, the DX, at -86 also give/take & the Evo LTE at -97 to -103. I then tried to load a webpage on my Rezound and the Evo. I picked yahoo because it has mixed media &was a first thing that popped into my head. My Rezound loaded the desktop version in less than 20 seconds... The Evo was still attempting to load the mobile version after several minutes.
So, do I believe the story that the mall kiosk has terrible Sprint reception? Was the demo Evo LTE one of the bad first batch? I know that there will be a step back in service speed but this was unbearable. I'm hoping that this isn't the normal for Sprint service... I mean it can't be, right? Right no one would use them.
What I'm unable to find out is what the Samsung Galaxy S3 radio is like compared to the Evo LTE in similar circumstances. I can't afford to get one of the phones, not have it work, pay the restocking fee and a second activation fee. With two lines that's over $200 just to switch away from a defective phone. Is there any leeway given for phones that won't hold a signal... Like allowing us to switch to another phone if the first is defective? I know that the base chipset is the same between the two phones but from what I've read the radios themselves can be different based on the manufacturer. So, I don't know what either the HTC Evo LTE or galaxy S3 would be like on any specific phone and it sounds like there are differences in the batches. What do I do or what would you do? I know we're taking a risk switching to carriers but we want to live authentically and put money into companies that are supporting the things we believe in and shaping their company based upon similar values. We will be having to do a transfer of our Vzw account (assumption of liability) once we're settled into Sprint but not until we're positive it works for us. Then we'll give up our Vzw contract so we don't owe an ETF. It also gives my DH the phone upgrade he needs since his was stolen during one of my medical emergencies. Vzw refused to help us at all through the whole process.
But I digress.
What do you think phone wise? Bad reception? Bad Evo LTE? Would you take a chance on the S3 with Samsung's past radio issues... Do you think that they've improved them? Would you take a chance on getting a bad Evo LTE since HTC /Sprint have admitted to a problem there? Since I can't compare them side by side working or compare radio strengths I really need advice!
Thanks so much in advance!
All the best,
Rae

It all varies on your area, you need to find people who live around you and ask there opinion. Some ppl say the HTC radio sucks, others say Sammys sucks. Rumor was without pure fact that Samsung was using a radio like the Motorola phones use. Lots of ppl are reporting positive feedback with the GS3. So it's something you can try, and if the store can't help you avoid a restocking fee, I would call customer service to see if theyd waive it.
However I know Sprint hasnt charged me a restock fee yet or ever, and if you have reception issues at home they will send you a free airwave...
I've heard that Sprint 3g is awful in some areas. I get decent enough speeds here and LTE is coming to my area soon so I won't be changing carrier. However, if LTE wasn't coming soon I'd definitely consider jumping ship.

The thing is and to be honest, once LTE hits, everyone will be *****ing about battery life. There is not a reason you cant jump on WIFI if avalible. Or use 3g... I have been stuck and still am stuck on 3g, and things load instantly for me... granted I'm not downloading big videos or anything...
But I know her main point was coverage... so she'd really need to stop at a store and talk to people who use the phone outside of the business
I'll let you know. Mostly I want to know that Sprint will stand behind either phone if the radios aren't up to par without the restocking fees and a second activation fee... I can't afford $210 of activation, restocking and another reactivation fee for phones that are defective. I'm not talking about just changing my mind and wanting a different phone but needing to trust that one way or another I'll get two phones with no radio issues.
It's not as simple as just staying with VZW, my husband's phone was stolen during one of my medical emergencies... He's currently using an old phone but it's not working very well. So, we either pony up for a new phone (even if it's via Craigslist) or we get a new provider (who hopefully gives a care bc Vzw certainly didn't!), both get new phones and sell our current ones to cover most of the upfront cost of the new phones. We could wait until Network Vision is completed or moreso but will they still be able to offer unlimited data plan at that point. Since we feel that we want to switch, now feels like a good time to do so. Does that make sense?
No we're not out of contract with Verizon but have people lined up to do an AOL (assumption of liability or contract takeover) so we'd be out of it with no fees. However, we won't complete the AOL until we're sure that Sprint will work for us now.
Does anyone know if the everything data plus (we'd be looking at the 1600min family plan) has free activation? I'd have to order online and it would be via employee referral? Also, do you get any numbers you can pick that are unlimited to those numbers? Verizon had friends and family where you got to pick a handful of numbers that you call the most that don't count against our minutes. My only concern is my in laws as they have a VERY limited cell plan and use their land line almost exclusively. If we could add that one number that would help a ton. I'd read somewhere online that Sprint had something similar but now, of course, can't find it again.
I appreciate all of your help and advice so very much. I hope this explains more why we're considering the switch and why we need good phone reception... At least as good as is currently possible on their network.
BTW, when we informed Vzw about the phone theft we were tracking the phone on Google latitude and the refused to help or advise us as to what to do in any way. Super disappointed with their lack of help. If the customer service had been better, we might have gotten our phone back. I've heard good things about Sprint's customer service.
Any other thoughts or suggestions or advice... Please share! And many thanks to all of you who have shared!
Order directly from Sprint
As a former employee of a 3rd party vendor, if you are worried about the vendors complying with Sprint's 30-day no strings window, order your phones directly from Sprint. If your or your husband's employer have an agreement with sprint that nets their employee's a discount, they might also have an exclusive sales team and pricing. Most corporate discounts waive the activation fee on new lines and Sprint(corporate, not 3rd party) is very good about exchanges. Keep in mind 3rd party vendors can, and do, pretty much whatever they want, if they treat you poorly, email [email protected] and it will garner the attention of Dan Hesse's resolution team. But again if you want to avoid the 3rd party headache, just order online or over the phone. Good luck, and I will check back as I just ordered both, an evo lte and sIII, for my wife and I. I will let you know how signal goes.
Sprint is very giving... ill PM you a number to use when you call them.

Thanks so much for the new info. I really appreciate it. Please do send along the best number to call Sprint at. That's totally awesome. I just need to make sure that we have good enough reception in our area and that we get good working phones. I'm really glad to hear that they are a "giving" company or maybe best to describe as doing what it takes to satisfy the customer. Vzw seems to be purposely going the opposite way and I'm not impressed. Again, I'd love that phone number to use and would also love to hear your thoughts and impressions of the two phones when you get them! I Please keep the info coming!

As of right now i get great signal and battery on my sprint s iii. I support ur cjoicr to switch. As far as customer sipport u eont regret it. If u have bad sifnal call them at any customer service number and request an airrave theyll send one for free. Those give u full signal at home. I believe emergency calls work without signal too so 911 shouldn't be a problem anyway, and airave should fix signal worries. So far this phone has great radio so far as I can tell.

Ting?

Does anyone have any experience with Ting? I am thinking about switching since my contract is up on 3 and soon up on the other 3 phones on my account and it would be about $170 per month cheaper.
Bump
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Ting is using Sprint's towers (I'm sure at a lower priority than contract subscribers (done via a PRL)). If you've been happy with Sprint's non-roaming service and you are happy with your phone, it might be worth it. They are not going to allow bad ESN phones, so you'll have to cleanly break w/Sprint (no past due bills etc), and I don't believe they allow roaming. They've also said you may/may not be able to send/receive MMS using your old Sprint phone, but luckily there are sites like this that can help more than the carrier is willing/able to.
People that are unsure of their financial futures are afraid to be under a contract, which is understandable. That's why there are so many contract-free options out there that used to be taboo. More and more of these MVNOs are now letting you use your existing phone, which saves both parties money.
Quite frankly, in my opinion, it all comes down to data consumption. The growing trend is more and more people are using their phones as their primary source of internet access, either native data from the carrier or via WiFi. Ting does not offer unlimited data, so it may or may not be a good option for you. Virgin & Boost do offer unlimited data, but they do throttle.
http://phandroid.com/2013/03/20/sprint-mvno-phones/
Good
I have been on Ting for a couple months now, with my Epic 4g (on Slim Rom, with NS4G modem), and very happy.
The way their pricing works, you get a significant discount for having multiple lines with them. For reference, this is all the phones that work for sure with Ting:
https://ting.com/blog/bring-a-sprint-device-to-ting-you-know-you-wanna/
I use my phone a reasonable amount, and attached is a screenshot of how they bill. ($28/mo for how much I used this month).
I use google voice to do all texting, so I pay zero for texting.
In short, I like that if I use my phone "normal", I pay $28, but if need to used it more for one month, pay more, then back to $28.
4g service has worked fine for me with Ting.
One note, to save on cell minutes, I got a OBI Talk 100 google voice adapter, to have a free house line for longer conversations.
This link will give a $25 discount for either service or device purchase for Ting.
https://zd6rs41lh12.ting.com/
I just switched yesterday, and brought my girlfriend over today. Looks like we'll be paying about 30-40 bucks per month, total, which is absolutely stellar when compared to the $150 we were paying before.
The Google Voice integration that Sprint has was automatically voided a few hours after my phone was activated on Ting, which sucks, but I just grabbed a new GV number and have my Ting voicemail forward to that number (so I can keep their visual voice mail and web access). SMS, on the other hand, can't come from Google Voice, unless I want to tell everyone I have two different numbers. The other option, of course, is to port my current cell number to Google Voice and request a different cell number from Ting. Then solely use Google Voice with GrooveIP, but I'm not entirely sure I want to mess with that currently. Also, MMS wouldn't work using Google Voice, but then again, I can't get it to work at all right now with CM10.1... And I've done the sd card boot to stock fc09 to make the necessary changes, but I digress.
As UPdownLoAD stated, it's all down to data consumption, really. Since the two main places we use data (our home and our respective workplaces) are well covered with WiFi, there's not much reason for us to worry. I'm excited though; we've really needed to cut our bills down, and the cell bill was definitely the most glaring problem.
I've been on it for about a week and have my Google voice number to the few people who I text with the most. So far so good. Once out am confident about Ting I intend to start moving my family over too
