Trouble finding an App that is causing Hot Reboot (solved) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

it's been almost 4 days now
everything on the phone runs great until i restore that mysterious app from backup.
problem is having over 500+ apps/games makes it extremely difficult to pin point which particular app is causing the hot reboot
hot reboot = not full reboot, it just crashes everything and reload the OS
my current suspect some of the many plug ins for Go Launcher EX or IM+
Go Launcher EX runs great on the phone, but then once i restore all those plug ins, it appears to cause the problem
same with IM+
there are other apps i suspect as well like SD card speed increase, or Dual USB
or if not something to do with the Keyboard
at one point the keyboard selection got locked out, and i was unable to choose another keyboard or language
anyways... back to the haystack to find the needle...

Have you tried hooking it up to adb and running a logcat on that bad boy?
Edit: If you run logcat and reproduce the hot-reboot it may show you what is causing the problem. And if that doesn't work there is also a command you can call to get the last kernel message before the reboot. I don't remember what that's called though. Kmsg I think, idk.

lol perhaps i should, i was too lazy to do that, don't really have the time, but after spending 4 days trying to track down the app... i guess it's about time to go about it the smart way

If the simple method doesn't work the first couple of times don't try it repeatedly, it won't ever work effectively.
-We do what we must because we can. For the good of all us, except the ones who are dead.-

i've actually narrowed it down to ICE Music 4.0x or IM+
everything else working great since the last wipe & restore, excluding those 2 apps

Freeze one and test it out.

The command is: adb pull /proc/last_kmsg
Sent from my Juggernaut SGSII or Galaxy Tab 10.1 now "In Paris"

in the end the problem was caused by the USB / Media Scanner

That kinda makes sense as to why you thought it was music then but why im+?
-We do what we must because we can. For the good of all us, except the ones who are dead.-

both of them were caught doing something and then crashing everytime it happened
in the end it was because both were trying load up stuff from the SD card which was being hogged by the media scanner, and apparently that didn't share well among those apps and the system itself, and kaboom!

Setting Up for a Hard reset: Questions. Plz help

Hello all,
I'm new to ANdroid coming from a Nokia n900 and I have a couple Questions before I Hard reset my phone. First of all, before ppl start to ask, I'm Hard resetting my Evo 4g because after messing around with it and installing/Uninstalling about 100 apps it's starting to bug out on me (freezes, slows down, force quit lots of apps). So I decided to give it a Hard reset.
I just wanted to know a couple things first:
-Is the Best way to completely Hard reset back to sprint stock rom is to use the "Hold Volume down Key at reboot" method??
-Do I have to back up my app brought from Android market and if so how?
-Will my Purchased Gameloft (from gameloft web store) Games still install/worked after I hard reset? Any Device not recognize problems to be expected?
-How do I back up my saved game files for games like NOVA, Zenonia, HomeRun Battle, and Raging Thunder 2? Where are they stored?
-The contact on my phone are more updated then the ones on Google. How do I export these out to my google/gmail account?
-Is there any way to Save/export my text messages?
-Anything thing else I might need to backup I didn't mention?
I know its a lot, but then again this is a big community. Hopefully a couple of you guys can answer a couple and recommend the best way to do these things.
Experience is what I'm lacking here.
Thanks
60 Views and no replies... really?
Anyone have anything?
It would be greatly appreciated.
I may be able to answer some questions, though I am relatively new to Android OS as well.
1. Yes, the best way to hard reset your phone to a stock ROM is to reboot with the DN Vol button.
2. Not sure
3. Not a clue
4. Each app likely has it's own method of storage, you will have to poke around the app or email the developer
5. If you sync your contacts/email/calendar via a Google account, then the two should be identical. If they are not, something is wrong with your synching. Check the synch frequency on your EVO, and ensure your contacts are synching with the right acount, in case you have more than one on your EVO.
6. Yes, there are plenty of apps for that, though I myself don't use them. Search in the marketplace, or poke around these forums.
7. Backup any photos, videos, etc. to you SD card.
If your phone is running slow, you might want to check to see how many apps are running simultaneously. DL a good task manager/killer, like Advanced Task Killer.

Thanks khov07.
I have Task killer running Aggressively on Auto Kill, but that's not the problem. I'm having to force quit a ton of apps and my browser keeps crashing. And even after clearing all app caches my phone overall is still running sluggish. I'm guessing one of my many apps might have done something.
I just synced all my contacts with HTC sync and backed up my SMS with a app from the market.
Also I just emailed all the developers for the games Im trying to save, thanks for the tip.
I'm still trying to figure out question #2 & 3.
-Do I have to back up my app brought from Android market and if so how?
If you're asking if you have to repurchase them, the answer is no. Your purchased apps are tied to your email. You'll be able to reinstall them.
-Will my Purchased Gameloft (from gameloft web store) Games still install/worked after I hard reset? Any Device not recognize problems to be expected?
I would ask gameloft that. I don't have any of their games

Great its rebooting now!
OK...I'm gonna having hard reset this thing tonight with out backing up my save game files
My evo is now randomly just rebooting. When press call on the phone app or start my default browser it sometimes just reboots.
This sucks. Any one else having these problem??
What rom were you using?
stock sprint rom
It could be one of your apps causing it to reboot.
Use adb to grab a log to see what could be causing it.
adb logcat V > c:\*whatever_folder*\log.txt

Here's a good read You're gonna wanna how to use adb if you wanna root and flash other roms.
random reboots, on androidforums.com it has been determined that the random rebooting issue when using the stock rom is caused by unchecking the following option...
from a home screen press the following: menu button --> settings --> wireless & networks --> mobile network
watch out for that one...

Issue with apps on SD after reboot

Hi all,
I have as strange issue in regards to apps on the SD card. I'm rooted, S-off on 3.29 stock. I installed installLocationMod, which enabled me to move any apps, even those not necessarily programmed, to be moved on 2.2 to the SD card. I basically moved everything that's not system, gapp, or widget related.
Everything works great, until I have to reboot, or I attach the phone to a PC as a hard drive. Basically, the apps don't come back after the phone comes back up, or its disconnected from the PC. I have to spend many hours doing reboots, battery pulls, dalvic cache wipes, etc, and then seemingly randomly, they pop back up.
When they're missing in the app list, the settings / app manager shows that they're there, but they're always "computing" when I select one to read the properties. Also, the market installer gets stuck, and I can't uninstall anything either.
Recently, I've read threads about partitioning the card before moving apps to SD.. is that still necessary with 2.2? Is that why this is such a pain? I'm thinking maybe the only solution is to move everything back to where they came from, and only move those apps that are specifically programmed to be moved on a non-rooted phone, and get rid of the modlocationinstall program altogether. That's a drag because I don't have room for all the apps, so I'll have to lose some... which is one of the reasons I rooted to begin with.
Any ideas? BTW, this is the second SD card that does this. The card is good.
Thanks,
Mike
Hey, I found this elsewhere on the forums in the LimeMOD rom in regards to mod install location:
"important !!! after a reboot you need to stop LauncherPro in the running applications menu to reload all sd installed apps !!! "
Could Sense be the reason for the missing apps issue? Is there a way to 'postpone' it on reboot?
Thx,
Mike

I'm thinking I might try stopping the Sense service after the reboot and letting it restart and see if they come back. I'll try it if I have to reboot again.. I'm actually avoiding rebooting at all cost now since it takes hours of frustration to get back to working order again.
Another thing I noticed.. alot of programs have that I moved have hidden services that are listed in a start-up auditor I installed just to see what the system was doing on boot up. I originally thought I'd be safe moving them since I didn't have widgets associated with them, or they didn't seem system related. Now I'm beginning to realize that I might have to be more careful what is moved, since I don't always know how they'll behave on boot. I suppose that's another reason why its best for non-techies just to rely on devs to build the default 2.2 a2sd behaviour into their programs, rather than forcing them there with stuff like mod install location.
Oh well... I'll keep you all updated when I know more. I'm rather surprised though, that more people aren't experiencing this...
Restarting Sense doesn't do anything. It seems still to be completely random.. usually after 4 or 5 hours of me continually manual rebooting. Nobody has any input at all?

update:
After several unsuccessful reboots, I was able to get back the apps by going into settings / phone storage and unmounting the card, and remounting it, with no reboot. I've tried that in the past and just had the phone lock up, but this time it worked. FWIW, modinstalllocation was set to auto, and debug was off. I don't know if its repeatable, since I don't relish having half my phone unavailable for half the day to test it, but next time I lose everyting, I'll try it again and update the thread. I realize that judging from the lack of responses, most of you all don't really care, but since one guy did say he had the same problem, and to prevent someone in the future from going through all this aggravation, I'll keep on top of this. It will be my little contribution to the forum...
UPDATE: Had to finally do a reboot, and all the SD apps came back! I'm thinking the card dismount/remount did the trick

What about CM10 roms?
Sent from my SGS3.
It only affects the Roms that Samsung directly influenced and only their browsers. The best way to handle this as of right now, if rooted is to install Chrome ( which is not affected ) or FireFox. Then connect to your phone via ADB ( after installing the android sdk ) , remount the system partition via
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/null /system
CD into /system/app
either delete or rename the SecBrowser_ATT.apk, I moved it to SecBrowser_ATT.bak to make sure I still had it, and that it wouldn't start up.
From what I understand the CM10, Miui and CM9 Browsers are OK due to not having anything to do with the TouchWiz framework.
IF you are not rooted, you can still install Chrome or Firefox, make sure its your "Default" browser and go into Settings-> Application Manager -> find SecBrowser aka stock browser and force stop it and then disable it. I would even clear the cache and data of it also just to be safe.
Me personally, I would be more afraid of some of the JAVA vulnerabilities we have seen surfaced recently, specially due to some of the POF code I have worked on there is def. going to be some Android madness going on.
Nopcodex90, very good suggestion, but wouldn't it be easier (assuming you had root) to just freeze the app in Titanium Backup?
While your example would work, it seems to be more work. Also, why did you add " /dev/null" to the remount command? You can just remount /system by itself.

That would def. work also, I actually do not use Titanium backup, I tend to use the shell for my backups and own scripts. Nothing against the App, it does a great job, I am just a little old school.
Also with that said, I am still used to an older POSIX mount command that would have failed with just passing /system, but you are correct , just passing /system would also mount. And you took the damn fun out of focing some of the noobs to learn the damn shell! Sure you can use your fancy dang ol' GUI but In my hayday, we would connect to the interwebz at 9600 baud modems in a green and black vtz1000 terminal.

It is probably called Browser in the app manager and titanium backup. The app has a different display name than the actual file name.
Or you can use a 3rd party dialer

It's been fixed already. Samsung has known about it for months. As long as you're running the latest firmware update (or any ROM based off of it), you're perfectly fine.

2400!? I had to rely on my town's trusty old 1200 baud modem, which was two hours away, uphill (both ways), in the snow for half a year, and had to wait for everyone else in the town to finish using it just to get to my favorite BBS - if the phone lines were up that day.

Ah the good old days... The best part was when you were trying to call a BBS and the line was busy. I would call the operator and say that my computer was stuck on the line and I couldn't call home. She would listen and just hear "static". I asked her if she could break in and just blow or talk for a few seconds until it dropped. 9/10 times not only would they do it, but they wouldn't even charge me for the operator intercept, since they thought it was just fixing a phone problem. This was before modems were really common place, so they often had no idea what I meant when I said my computer was on the phone. I'd thank them, and magically the BBS was available.

Google play crashes on brand new nexus 7

I am on my second nexus 7 now. The first one had a bad microphone and it did not work at all. I exchanged it and got a new nexus 7 which has a working microphone, but right out of the box several apps crash like google play, gallery, and camera. Factory reset doesnt work, not does clearing the cache and app data for google play. Also apps like google drive tell me I don't have any external storage. I also am unable to copy any files to the tablet by connecting it to my computer. The storage comes up as unknown in size and when I go to copy files the window pops up to show it is being copied, but it never actually copies the file.

I got my third nexus 7 and it worked fine. All of them came from Office Depot in Tulsa Oklahoma. Interestingly enough I got the last one in three of the five stores in my area. I was told by one person that there had been some returns there as well because of defects. I think I should go get a lottery ticket or something because getting two bad tablets in a row has to be some kind of luck.
Yea sucks. Make sure to test NFC and Wireless Charging. I've heard of some issues with those not working. My 32gb seems great and everything works (knock on wood). Are most of the problems on the 16gbs or 32gbs? Some suggested their being a bad batch of memory?
Most importantly is that there seems to be lots of issues surrounding the latest Play Store 4.3.10. Many have dropped back to 4.3.9.
My Google Play doesn't crash, but I'm having problems downloading some apps. I'm having to clear cache in Settings and restart to get them to download/install.

The hot spot for NFC is on the "N". How are you testing it? Do you have some NFC tags? If using another device, make sure both NFC radios are enabled.

For people with problems downloading apps that crashes make sure that you go in tablet Settings, Backup & reset, and uncheck automatic restore. It seems that apps saved under a different version won't load properly. You can set auto restore after.

SDCard bug? or something else

Well, the story goes:
My wife´s SGH-i474 (AT&T) had 4.1.2 installed, crappy reception, launcher buggy (it created more desktops everytime she wanted to delete one), and overall the phone felt laggy. She plays just 3 games, Farmville 2 CS, Candy Crush and Clash of Clans (she´s actually pretty good this one). Not too long ago, since the phone was only rooted to install greenify and link2sd to freeze the bloatware, she found out that it was possible to update the phone to a newer release; and I saw that there was an official OTA to 4.4.2, but since we are overseas, the stock update won´t go (it said that the phone was updated).
I dived into google and I saw that here on xda there was a method to get it into 4.4.2. And me, being the android guy and wanted to get lucky I tried it and succedded, but with one detail...
You see, I mentioned the games for a particular reason, 2 ouf of 3 work, Farmville for some reason doesn´t load (it gets to the loading screen and stays there at 0%). I left it overnight, with the option of leaving the screen on while charging, so that the phone won´t "sleep" to see if the game need to download a file and it was taking a long time, but no, 10 hours later it was still at 0%.
After that, I decided to install Logcat to see what was going on while the game at launch time. Surpringsinly, logcat was unable to save the log to the "sdcard". , another dive into google revealed that there was indeed a bug on the sdcard permissions (never knew that this kind of thing would happen to the gigantic Google, OMG ), and there were several fixes available, which I tried, even manually (just to see that the apps did indeed what they advertised, but to be true, the stock rom that I used had this fix already installed, thank you Mr even... or who ever went into the trouble of making all those files and instructions that helped me get into 4.4.2, I just don´t recall the nickname, but I do remember he has a beard )
Back to the point, I find it odd, that logcat was unable to write to the sdcard, and more odd that just a game was unable to work, because it worked before the update, but logcat doesn´t show anything related to "permission denied" to the Zynga app, nor to logcat itself when it wanted to write to the sdcard.
Since I am just a poweruser, I already wiped to stock and nothing changed, I tried another logcat application with the same result, so what I believe is that maybe the apps have something wrong, because I didn´t find anyone complaining about the stock rooted rom that I used. Besides that it was stock, and just rooted, I just wanted to know if anyone happened to have this problem and if they were able to fix it or have a workaround it.
Just to clarify, the phone works perfectly, and all the 51 apps that has installed (yep, she´s kinda a tech girl herself) work, except FV (which won´t go past 0% at the loading screen) and those to logcat applications that I used. (Catlog and Logviewer Lite, which can´t save logs to the sdcard), even the camera works and saved pics to the sdcard withouth problem (one of the things I saw reading is that maybe the camera would stop working but nope, just fine).
If you have any ideas, please, express yourself.
The kitkat update for google did in fact make it to where nothing could be written to sd. Google trying to get rid of sd cards for some stupid reason. Anyway, if the phone is rooted, try the xposed app with the external sd modules. Took care of my problems with that, not on my S3 because enewman17 is so damn awesome with his S3Rx rom that he took care of that, but on my Note 10.1 and Tab 4 fixed it right up
I see, could you be more specific about the xposed app, the name in fact, a search rendered quite a few, an I am not native english speaker.
I mustbe cursed hehe, I found the "app", is a framework, but guess what? I am unable to install because it is unable to write to the sdcard hehehe, I will give a try to the custom rom.
To mr Enewman, you sir, you deserve a cold beer, my wife is now happy, just a little glitch with the google keyboard at the first boot but after that excellent.
