I know that there are a few threads regarding A100 ad-hoc network support already; however, I found that there were a handful of wpa_supplicant files that did not work. Some didn't work for me and others worked but they were not stable. I would have posted this in the development section but I am not able to because I am a new member.
This is a working wpa-supplicant file and instructions on how to enable ad-hoc networking.

No, this is not re-complied for the A100. There are multiple Xzoom files out there that do not work for our devices. You must have got a good one? This one works great, have been using it for a few days now.
As far as secured ad-hoc networks... I'm not sure. I only tried it with jokispot light. I am re-flashing my atrix now. when I install a wireless tether app on it that supports secured ad-hoc, I will report back.
so how do we install this

I did this and am getting error when it tries to restart wifi, even after a reboot

How to get this work:[You need Root Explorer]
First you want to turn off your wifi. Save the attached file to your A100 /mnt/sdcard, Copy it using root explorer, navigate to the /system/bin folder and click mount R/W then paste the file into the folder replacing the original (make sure to take a backup!) then long hold on the file and view permissions, check all the boxes in the first two columns and the first 2 in the last column. (chmod 775) You can then restart your wifi and enjoy ad-hoc networks (no reboot needed.)

Hi. I just rooted my A100 and want to apply this patch so that I can do Ad hoc wifi on my N8 with Joikuspot just like you have. I was able to find the "/system/bin" but what do you mean by "click mount R/W"?
Thanks.

That means that you have to set permissions to that file as "readable/writeble"
System files are "locked" you could say, which means, they are only readable files. Once mounted as readable AND writable (i.e. R/W), you are able to modify and change these files.
To do this, use a root explorer app and longpress the file using want to mount as R/We and click settings. Looking thru the options that pop up, and there should be an option to set permissions or mount as R/W. Click that option and a few tabs and columns should pop up. Under the user tab, and select read and write and accept the changes, and done!
I will try to upload a video to simplify it for u
Edit: Here's the Video, hope it helps

I tried the one posted by JusThinK (or linked to, anyway) and the ad-hoc worked great for tethering, but I ran into a problem. Connecting to a standard infrastructure worked fine, but if I left the tablet alone for a few hours and came back to it, even though it was still connected to the wifi network, nothing would work. Turning WiFi off and on fixed it and got it working again, but this would happen anytime I left the tablet idle for a bit. Anyone else experience this?
Switching back to the original wpa-supplicant file obviously broke the ad-hoc support, but fixed the above mentioned error.
OMFG this freaking worked!
thank you so much, i was getting to the end of my wits. i originally thought it was an sg2att problem, but other devices can see it but not the a100.
i HAD to get "Root Explorer" in order to mount /system/bin as writable.
i couldnt figure it out with ES or astro, and terminal errored out- so make sure you get Root Explorer if you're like me (and don't know what you're doing besides being good at following directions)
now to figure it out for bluetooth
thanks again, you rock!
First off, many thank-you's go to JusThinK for his help in gathering the info and making the brief yet thorough guide.
Now, similar to ygthb, I had an issue getting the wi-fi to start after I made the wpa_supplicant replacement and set its permissions according to JusThinK's guide. It would just say "error", even after I restored my wpa_supplicant backup.
Frustrated, I took a second look at the permissions for the other system files in the system/bin folder. I matched the wpa_supplicant's permissions to these, and it now works fine. It tethers to my Xperia Play via Barnacle (an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection) perfectly.
For those interested, these permissions are rwxr-xr-x. In Root Explorer, it makes an "n" shape pattern, which loosely looks like this diagram:
R W E
[X] [X] [X] Owner
[X] [ ] [X] Group
[X] [ ] [X] Others
("Set UID", "Set GID", and "Sticky" were left unchecked)
If you're reading this and getting errors, try this. Worth a shot.
yay. Thanks

I found the same thing with astro and ES explorer, I guess you need the paid versions to change permissions. I was going to pay for root explorer, but I found the freebie "Root Browser" in market which saved me a little change and worked perfect. Now if I only had 4g!

I'm trying to tether the A100 and a Motorola Photon 4G.
Rooted both devices. Set all file permissions as told. Copied new wpa_supplicant into System/Bin. Re-booted. Have the WiFi Tether app running on the Photon. The Photon buzzes when the WiFi connection is made. A100 says "connected to AndroidTether (adhoc)". Have 3g connection. All seems well BUT... when I try to go to a web page the tablet says "webpage not available". The upload data count on the Photon creeps up a little with each attempt at loading a page but the download is locked at .2kB.
Didn't Daveba say he would eat his hat if this didn't work? I'll buy him lunch instead if he can figure out my problem. I can't post in the developers forum so somebody forward this to him please.
connection problems
maybe im missing something here.
my a100 connects to my nokia n900, the n900 is running JoikuSpot.
The a100 connects to the nokia, but then the web browser can not connect to the internet, actually no data is relayed through it.
I am going to check with another device to see if its the nokia or the a100. Anyone else had or solve a similar issue????
Does anyone know if this wpa_supplicant works on a A100 on ICS? Thanks.

Hi, I'm trying to remove all those annoying pre-loaded aps that VZW put on my phone. I attempted to run the unrevoked3 root + flash thingy and it got hung up part way through - phone still works, and the phone IS rooted. I installed a terminal emulator and saw that all the pre-loaded aps only have "R" access which is why I cannot remove them.
I've tried using "chmod -r 777 <program>" and I get a "failed" message. I've tried the simple "rm /system/app/amazon*" and it tells me it's a read-only file (still). Can anyone help me? I've got some experience with linux and command line, but am still not very good with it and this is my first time attempting to root/hack my phone.
I've got the HTC Incredible running the latest 2.3 gingerbread.
Try to get BUsy Box and see if you have super user access, cuz since you said it hung up half way, chances are your phone did not root completely
Im pretty sure it has been rooted. I downloaded an emulator and when I type "su" the command line goes $->#. Someone else had this similar problem but they wanted to install a different ROM and I just want to remove useless aps. That being said I wasn't able to make any use out of his solution.
I should also point out that a super user icon is now in my aps window. I open it and its just a black screen, possibly because I haven't given anything root access yet?

if it didnt ask for permission, that means your phone is not rooted, as Clockwork recovery needs permission to use, reroot? or ask in the incredible forum?
Yeah, guess I'll try to reroot. Not sure why the unrevoked3 root didn't work. Will try and post any details about failed tasks during the root process.

I've seen this thread before and since forgot about it. Thanks for posting it. I assume in order to do what they say in the thread (meaning run the adb shell), you need to root your phone
?
Sorry for taking so long to report back...busy time of year!
As it turns out, my phone actually WAS rooted despite running into the previously posted comments. I was attempting to start over and in doing so, downloaded SDK, JDK and proceeded to mount my phone using adb. All I had to do was reboot my phone in recovery mode and then mount /system. Voila! I have since moved all the useless bloat to a disabled folder...
My next question is this: How do I enable tethering and mobile hotspot?
Thanks for your help.
Wireless tether for root users is a pretty baller app. I show it off once in a while at work when someone flashes their ipad around. The speed is solid.

Is that the name of the ap? Or how can I enable it? I've been told that the pre-loaded mobile hotspot still will not for rooted phones and you need to download a 3rd party ap?
Just searched the "wireless tether" in the market and found it...it says it requires "Netfilter-enabled kernel" What's that mean? I'm still running the stock ROM (2.3 gingerbread). I don't know that I want to run a new ROM....
I downloaded and installed both "wireless tether" and "barnacle" just to try out both. I can view my mobile hotspot on other devices, and I can even connect them to my phone. On the iPhone (4g), I can get what appears to be everything but youtube. On my laptop I can't get any internet signal...
In either tethering ap, I cannot view who/what is connected (i.e. my laptop or iPhone). Any ideas? Are there limitations to these aps?

I have Barnacle for my Wi-Fi tether and it tells me who is connected to my phone (there should be a "Clients" tab). Do you have any encryption enabled?
I password protected my wireless hotspot and then used both the iPhone and laptop to connect to it, once they connected I tried viewing who was connected to my hotspot in both barnacle and the wireless tether and neither of them would say another device is connected.
Hi Guys,
I tought a simple and universal method to avoid WP7 relocking problem: edit the Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file on your pc after unlocking your device with CrevronWP7. Let me explain.
Technical explaination, you can skip to the next paragraph if you're not interested in
I used open source Network analyzer Wireshark on my pc to discover which domains Zune connect once a WP7 is connected via usb (while WiFi is off on the device).
They where:
developerservices.windowsphone-int.com
developerservices.windowsphone.com
catalog.zune.net (-> media info, covers, apps info etc...?)
socialapi.zune.net (-> Zune social access)
commerce.zune.net (-> Zune market access)
download.windowsupdate.com (-> updates check)
download.microsoft.com (-> updates check)
update.microsoft.com (-> updates check)
login.live.com (-> Live.com access)
Of course the first 2 domains are the ones responsible of the relock, they are also listed in each phone registry. Editing the Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file on your pc make your pc unable to connect to the real M$ servers, pointing it to your ip on the local loopback net (127.0.0.1) instead.
How to edit the file mentioned
Unlock your phone with Chevron before doing anything, then disconnect it from your pc. If it's already unlocked you can go on to the next step.
With text editors like Notepad or Notepad++ (absolutely NOT Wordpad or Word) open the
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etcfile on your pc. Eventually, modify "C" letter with the matching one of the partition where Windows system is. Check modify and write permissions for your user from file properties before, of course, otherwise you will not be able to save.
Add the following lines at the end of the file:
127.0.0.1 developerservices.windowsphone.com
127.0.0.1 developerservices.windowsphone-int.comthen save it and close the editor. Modify user permissions for the hosts file disabling write and modify capability, then reboot your pc.
Turn Off WiFi on your WP7 device before connect it to Zune, then Sync via usb. It should not relock anymore.
It's working fine on my LG Optimus 7 and HTC HD7 since I bought them, about a month ago (It's true that I am a registered student developer since January 7, but I never registered any phone of mine to AppHub). A friend of mine also tried this method and worked. A blog author I know is instead having troubles with his Omnia 7, his phone is still relocking.
I need some feedback from you, xda members. Try this method and report your impressions in this topic!
Link to the Italian version: http://www.sevenphone.it/2011/01/18/come-impedire-relock-wp7-zune/
Does not work for my Samsung Focus. I did everything listed but it still relocks every time I connect to the Zune software.

Well, once Wireshark opens you have to select the Network card you use to connect to the internet with your pc.
Under the "Capture" and "Interface list" titles (on the left) you can find a list, be sure to click on the right one.
(Remember to close the browser or other apps accessing the internet while you are dumping packages on the network.)
Open Zune, the connect the phone. Wait until the phone relocks, then stop live capture in WireShark.

Well, I tought this method would be device-indipendent, too, but Samsung users are still having issues while on LG, HTC and (probably) Dell is working fine. Maybe they use another subdomain on Microsoft's servers? I dunno.
BTW, you have to unlock the device BEFORE following this tutorial, otherwise ChevronWP7 changes that file adding an unwanted line at the end.
Here on HTC HD2 your fix is not working. Just tested and my apps are locked again.
HD2 WP7 no workie. As a matter of fact with the host file edited, Chevron crashes when you hit unlock. I changed the file back to point to my PCs IP and all is well.

yes i did have mine unlocked...but i found a simpler way to keep from unlocking with registry editor
for me,for the moment it works.. i unlocked my HD7 (with hard reset before cause was impossible to re-unlock) and after your tweak my phone is always unlocked
Speriamo che dura e che continua cosi,mi vedo male resetare tutto ogni volta
Interesting, but I have a different method from my thread over in the HD2 forum:
DanielNTX said:
I wrote this inside of another thread, but decided to make a new thread because others may not find it or read it. For those who have tried everything, this is the reason why you can't unlock the phone unless you do a full reset:
The majority of the failures to unlock your phone again is because you used a registry script that changed the HD2 to identify it as an HD7 and may have included registry entries that set PortalUrlProd and PortalUrlInt to 127.0.0.1 or a Null value and somehow your phone became relocked. Once it's set this way, no matter what you do to unlock the phone it won't work because the proper server to query is "developerservices.windowsphone.com" is not defined on the phone. ChevronWP7 works by hijacking and spoofing the address of developerservices.windowsphone.com to be your local computer and then responds appropriately over port HTTPS (443) to the phone.
From this post, Microsoft/ChevronWP7 responds with this:
Code:
<DaysLeft>365</DaysLeft>
<AppsAllowed>10</a:AppsAllowed>
If you set it to 127.0.0.1 in the registry this references your phone when it tries to unlock. The phone itself is not running a spoofed HTTPS server so it will never work. Setting it to null means it doesn't no where to go either. If your phone is working in Zune and you hit the end button on the phone, you will notice ChevronWP7 will report that the phone is pin-locked, this means ChevronWP7 knows about the phone, but the "uh oh - Please make sure it's connected using USB, Please start the Zune application" message it generates is kind of ambiguous and is not the actual error we are seeing here.
The original values are these:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DeviceReg]
"PortalUrlProd"="https://developerservices.windowsphone.com/Services/WindowsPhoneRegistration.svc/01/2010"
PortalUrlInt"="https://developerservices.windowsphone-int.com/Services/WindowsPhoneRegistration.svc/01/2010"
and the corresponding certificate is this:
That's how the phone can trust the HTTPS connection because you imported the certificate.
Now if you change the URL to something else, you will need a corresponding certificate. You can make one with makecert.exe or makessl.exe form the various resource/development toolkits out there on the Microsoft website.
In my example, I'm going to use a site that doesn't exist "developerservices.unlock.me". You should change the PortalUrlProd and PortalUrlInt on the phone as follows:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DeviceReg]
"PortalUrlProd"="https://developerservices.unlock.me/Services/WindowsPhoneRegistration.svc/01/2010"
"PortalUrlInt"="https:/developerservices.unlock.me/Services/WindowsPhoneRegistration.svc/01/2010"
Now in your hosts. file in \windows\system32\drivers\etc folder, you should set up an entry for developerservices.unlock.me with your computer's own IP address.
Once you do you need to install a new certificate on the phone for whatever host in the URL you made and you will be able to use ChevronWP7 to unlock incase it ever locks you out again.
To simplify the making a self-signed certificate portion, I've created a cert for "developerservices.unlock.me" with the validity date of 1000 days. It's included in this post. Hope this helps you all with maintaining an unlocked Windows Phone 7 and understanding why ChevronWP7 won't unlock anymore.

I haven't had it relock on me yet.
Well, the problem seems simple to me: who modifies the
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DeviceReg]
"PortalUrlProd"="https://developerservices.windowsphone.com/Services/WindowsPhoneRegistration.svc/01/2010"
PortalUrlInt"="https://developerservices.windowsphone-int.com/Services/WindowsPhoneRegistration.svc/01/2010"
registry values on the phone will not be able to use the trick I posted in this thread to avoid relocking...
Reverting back to the original values will solve the problem! Thanks DanielNTX!

None of the one-click solutions seem to work. I have been able to push the required files via adb to the phone, get into the shell and run the exploit.bin. I get back to the original directory but I the phone disconnects and when I run the adb devices command I get no devices attached. If I reboot the phone I can get it to show up on the adb devices list, but when I run the adb shell I only get a $ and not #. I have tried this many, many times with the same result. I have also re-installed the Moto usb drivers many times and does not seem to make a difference. I must be doing something wrong. This is a brand new phone in Thailand, and probably has only been available here very recently.
I really do not have any experience at any of this but I am trying to learn. I also really need this phone rooted because I cannot access any paid apps in the marketplace In Thailand, and getting some of these apps would make my life easier. I am confident I can get them if I could get root access (using MarketAccess). The reason I bought the Defy in Thailand and not another phone is it is compatible with my home country. Maybe I blew it…..
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
I am brand new to all of this, and have no idea what I'm talking about.
A search turns up two guides on how to do this. One at a site called dkszone and one here. Simply by searching "root motorola defy". Dkszone credits xda with the guide. Their guide is a little different, though, in that they reference an ADB gui for Windows, which is what I would have to use. Both guides are worth reading. I can't link to them because I have not posted here enough.
One thing that does strike me is that you make a reference to getting back to the original directory and your phone disconnects. Both guides make a reference to having to reconnect. XDA in step 5 and dkszone in step 7.
Someone here knows the answer.
Haven't been to Thailand in a while. Lived on Soi Lang Suan in Bangkok for two years. '95 and '96 maybe. Is Shinawatra still in exile? I'm sure you must know that he essentially brought cellphone service to Thailand. In a big way, that's for sure. This long before he became the PM, or whatever they call it now.
.
more specific info
I will try to get a little more specific…
I’ve used the guide posted on xda forums and I can push via adb the following files like this:
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
abd push su /sdcard/su
adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
adb push exploit.bin /data/local/tmp/exploit.bin
Seems to work no problem…..
I then type the following commands
adb shell
cd data/local.tmp
chmod 0755 exploit.bin
./exploit.bin
The system chews on it a bit, shows a bunch of remarks, then $, then forked a bunch of childs (scary) and then displays the starting directory (C:\documents and settings\userblahblah).
At this point things go nowhere. There is a remark about restarting the adb server on the desktop and re-login. I guess I am not exactly sure what that means or how to do it. If it means unplugging the phone and plugging it back in I have done that. If it means rebooting the phone and/or rebooting my pc I have done that as well. If I type adb devices at the command prompt after running the exploit.bin) I get “list of devices attached” with nothing listed below. I can use kill-server and then again enter the adb devices command (adb starts) but the phone is still not recognized. I can check for hardware devices attached through device manager and the ADB interface does not show up (although it was there when I started this procedure) If I type adb shell at this point I get a device not found error. The only way I can get the phone to be recognized again is if I reboot the phone. When I do this the adb interface is listed in system hardware, I can run the adb devices command and the device shows up. When I run the adb shell command now I get a $....so no permissions, right? This has been a long, frustrating experience.
Does anyone have any idea that I am doing wrong or know of any way to fix this?
Any help or other ideas would be very much appreciated…..
BTW,
I’m pretty sure Shinawatra is still in exile…I think he has like 20 passports or something. Who knows where he is...
I really don't know what to tell you. I really don't.
I would not be able to use that program you are talking about. I would have to use a one-click method. I know you said you have tried the one-click methods before.
I don't need this for my phone and it wouldn't work anyway, I suppose, but I put the one-click .apk on mine just for illustration purposes.
This on a phone with ASTRO file manager pro.
Downloaded one-click .apk from here onto my hard drive. That first post reads that the app is available on the Market. I couldn't find it.
Pic 1 - moved file onto my phone then removed phone from laptop
Hit the ASTRO icon on my phone and I get what you see in pic 2.
Hit sdcard and got pic 3.
Scrolled to bottom and hit the .apk and got pic 4.
Hit Open App Manager and got pic 5.
I can't continue from there because it's not made for my phone.
My intent is not to insult you. If you have done this and it doesn't work, then I am just at a loss. If the info is of no use to you, maybe someone will find it useful in the future. I suppose it's possible that this is all in the thread that I linked to. I can't take the time to read it.

Thanks for the input and the concise instructions. I have actually tried running the z4root.apk file from the phone. It installs just fine. When I run the program (for those familiar with it) I choose permanent root (or temporary root, I have done both). There is a notification at the bottom of the program that is telling you what the program is doing at the time. It displays ‘Running exploit in order to gain root access’ (or something similar) and then ‘acquiring root shell’. The z4root program stays on the ‘acquiring root shell’ screen for about 10 seconds or so then the screen reverts back to the all applications screen. No confirmations or error messages…nothing. And the phone is definitely not rooted.
Going to Hong Kong for a day…wish I could use the app store for my wanted apps there….I think I'm going to have the same issue as Thailand (no paid app appstore access).
Still hoping for an answer….and I'm not talking about throwing my phone out the window….yet…
Rooting Motorola Defy
Z4Root does the same thing on my Defy. I also can’t pass through ./exploit.bin either. After executing exploit.bin I get dropped to c:\...\... as expected but then I can’t even go back in adb shell as it gives the error: device offline…I can only get to adb shell after rebooting the phone, however it takes me back $ prompt instead of # prompt. So it seems like this exploit.bin is not capable of giving me # (Root) prompt and so I am unable to mount system partition with read and write access and so unable to execute the rest of the commands on the phone as well. Am I doing it wrong or missing something here? Thanks for the help.
The z4root worked fine till version 2.34.1. From 2.51 version on there is another utility superoneclick. You can find it in the defy section of the forum. Worked for me and a lot of others.

Success!
I do not know why I did not find this tread before but I did get my Thailand Defy rooted using the info and file on this tread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913709
I need to improve my thread searching skills....
The superonclick version that I had tried previously was different than the one posted on that thread and I did not need to use 'turn on turn off stuff' noted there........one click...done......as advertised.
Thanks for everyone's help.....you have saved a Thailand Defy from a 30 story dive out of the window..... (and saved my sanity).
Success!

Rooting a Defy
I have one too. While I was on 2.1, I had to use an old version of Super One Click. The update finally came out for my phone, and moved it up to 2.2.2. The update killed my rooting, but the current Super One Click worked like a charm after the update. Mine was from the UAE, and I live in the USA, so some of the pre-installed apps did not apply to me, and were really annoying, trying to localize applications into languages I can't read or speak. Rooting let me kill off some pre-installs. The new version also seems to be a lot more battery gentle, although it really hit the battery hard the first day (I think it was just getting all of the cache and settings caught up using a lot of data connection.)
Hi everybody. I've bought my A100 one month ago and i've rooted and added ad-hoc patch for it in order to have internet through wm cellphone.
i've rooted with this guide
androidforums.com/iconia-tab-a100-all-things-root/401598-rooting-a100.html
and added ad-hoc with this one:
batista70phone.com/2011/05/supporto-per-reti-ad-hoc-su-acer-iconia-a500/ (is in italian, if you need english tell me, I can translate it)
To avoid problems open the page from the tablet and copy/paste the commands, and remeber to SWITCH OFF WIFI AS SOON AS POSSIBLE before playing with the wifi files!!
I've also added to my winmo phone ( diamond ) WMWifiRouter in orde to share the connection from 3g on the phone to wi-fi on the tablet.
Everything works. You have only to start WMWiFiRouter on diamond or other wm6 device and than looking in the wifi list on tablet for the wireless just created ( Office Lan....etc ).
For convenience activate on cellphone "wifi always on" also if "display is off" trough Diamond Tweaks.
I hope this can be useful for someone else ;-)
English guide for enabling ad-hoc
I would greatly appreciate it if you would translate the guide for enabling ad-hoc capabilities for the a100. I can't seem to find a guide anywhere else and, alas, I don't speak Italian. Thank you so much!

still having problems with ad hoc access
i followed the instructions to root the tablet. this worked fine. i then followed instructions to replace the wpa_supplicant file with the one found on this forum for the motorola xoom that is meant to give ad hoc capabilities. i know the file replaced fine as the way the a100 behaves with regards wireless has changed. before there seemed to be a bug that it would always turn off the wireless when the screen went off no matter what the wireless behavior settings were. now it never turns off wireless even if the screen goes off.
if i set up a wireless network from my laptop using the intel My Wifi software if connects fine with WPA, it did this out the box. however if i set up an ad hoc netork on my laptop it will not connect correctly.
1. If I use WPA it just keeps saying connecing ---disconncted repeatedly
2. If I use WEP or no encryption it gets to the point of obtaining an ip address but never gets any further.
I have only tried with DHCP
Also with the ad hoc network it seems to make multiple networks in the wireless networks on the tab.
I was hoping someone could give me some specific help on this and maybe some up to date advice on the usbb host issue.
Thanks in advance.
thanks for your help yes it seems i am the only one who is still having problems! i am working on a ship now and maybe the server here is causing issues. i will be home tomorrow and can try then.
when you set up your ad hoc in windows do you select WPA or WEP, funny I thought ad hoc only had WEP security. why does w7 offer WPA on ad hoc?
thanks andy
thanks I tested at home. Still can't connect with adhoc on my laptop with wep wpa or no authentication but works fine on my huwei e585 which is a bit of a mystery I will try and fine another laptop to test it with.....thanks for your support though.......do you know any solution to the USB host issue on the a100?
hi there is another issue with the a100 i was hoping to solve. you cannot mount a usb device like a thumb drive on it. the a500 had a standard pc type usb port and you could mount a usb drive on it. although you can get a mini usb male to ubs female 'usb on the go' cable apparently it wont work on the a100. i have seen some feedback regarding this on blogs but no solutions. any ideas? Andy
ad hoc again
hi again...have juts discovered that my huwei e585 modem actually provides infrastructure not ad hoc which is why my a100 tablet works with it. i think i still have a problem with ad hoc on my a100. i went through the process of getting the new wpa_supplicant file in /system/bin and i checked it has the same permisions as the original file but still no luck...can anyone help? I still cant connect my a100 to an ad hoc network provided by my laptop.
yes, i used root explorer to copy the wpa_supplicant and I made sure I had the airplane mode on and wireless off when I did it.I just tried the whole process again and the same result. my a100 has android 3.2. I also made sure the permissions are exactly the same as the original file.
Andy
Hello. I am an Android newb. I have been trying to correct this issue for over a week to no avail. Please advice.
I've tried rooting my A100 by inputting (copy/paste) the proper commands on the a100 itself in a terminal emulator, but have had no success. The commands cause no obvious response when entered into the terminal, but when I checked xbin for su, it's there. I've installed the superuser apk, but busybox install fails due to lack of root. Repeating the process doesn't change anything.
I've also tried rooting via the ADB method. The results are the same. su is in xbin folder; however, I cannot install busybox because I am not rooted.
The last bit of info I can provide about my situation is this. I have root checker installed on my A100. I do not get the same result each time I click "verify root". Sometimes it tells me that I'm rooted and sometimes it tells me that I'm not rooted????
Please let me know if I can provide any additional information. I need some help please.

These are the same commands that I have previously entered via terminal emulator and I tried again via ADB method. I have tried multiple times.
I'm not sure what you mean by "You must have to copy moded su to your sd card , /mnt/sdcard". Are you referring to the su file in my xbin folder? If so, I cannot copy it because I am not rooted. Every time I execute the aforementioned commands, the su file in my xbin folder gets modified. The size of the su file in my xbin folder is 0.00K, is this normal?
Thanks for responding, please offer further guidance if you can.
hi i am no expert but i got the root to work fine with these instructions. as long as you copied the new su file to your xbin folder the third command on the list should take care of everything.
then you have to do the busybox and super user thing
Step 6: Install BusyBox from the Market
Step 7: Install SuperUser from the market, this is the APK version this time. This is going to update the SU file and install the SuperUser app.
thanks i got it now
Hi,

Although some might still find this tutorial useful, I don't think I will be updating it. If you have an ARCHOS Elements tablet you should be able to root by installing ArcTools, use install apps tab, download and install Rockchips generic recovery, and then installing superuser.zip from recovery.
__________________
This simple root can be performed in 5 minutes, but I'm writing this guide to help you quickly get past some pitfalls I encountered. It works on the Titanium series, but will probably work on other models in the ARCHOS Elements line as well. Please comment and confirm so that I can update the list of supported models right here:
Confirmed working on:
ARCHOS 70 Cobalt, Titanium
ARCHOS 80 Titanium HD, Xenon
ARCHOS 97 Titanium, Xenon
ARCHOS 101 Titanium
ARNOVA 97 g4
ARNOVA 101 g4
MEDION LifeTab E10310 / E10311 / E10316
MEDION LifeTab E10312*
*Users report that vroot doesn't recognize this model.
Does not work on::
ARCHOS 97 Platinum HD (first edition, but may work on the second edition 97b Platinum)
ARCHOS Gen10 XS series
Requirements:
Windows OS for root tool
USB cable for tablet
Instructions
1. First make sure you are updated to the latest firmware from Archos. Since there aren't any custom ROMs for this device yet, you want to have the latest bugfix version before you start.
2. Download latest version of the VROOT app here (Now available in English): http://www.mgyun.com/en/GetVRoot

3. Install the VRoot program in Windows
Now the VROOT app should be running and waiting for you to plug in your device:
4. On your tablet, make sure that USB debugging mode is turned on in developer options
5. With tablet turned on and booted up, connect it to the computer with USB Cable
The app should recognize the device and give you a screen like this:
6. Click the green button.
Your device will reboot in several seconds. When it comes back up, it will be rooted. I don't know if the new English version will install the Chinese superuser or not. If you don't see Chinese, then ignore those parts of the following instructions.
First, it is important to know that when the app pops up to give root access to a program, you need to push the right side button to grant access.
7. Now, you can search for and install "Superuser" by ChainsDD from the Android market. The version made by Clockworkmod does not work for this procedure.
8. Now start Superuser (from the market page after installing), and click on the "i" for Information at the top of the app. It should say su binary v3.x.x with the option to "tap to check for updates".
9. Check for updates and then click the update button.
This will replace the Chinese binary version with an English version. You should now be able to see the normal Superuser Icon in the app drawer and will start receiving prompts in English. But the Chinese su has been known to take over again, so we need to get rid of it while the English su is in charge...
10. Open Settings | Apps in Android and find the Chinese app that was installed, it has a blue icon. Perform a normal uninstall of this app.
11. Now use ES Explorer or another root explorer to delete /system/apps/Superuser.apk (note that it also shows the blue icon)
In ES Explorer 3, you need to first mount system as writable by going to Tools, Root Explorer, Mount R/W and setting /system to RW.
After a reboot you should have root with English SuperUser.
*****************
This root was done without enabling SDE on the device.

Hi,
thank you very much for your tuto. I did root my Arnova 101 G4 successfully with that. You are Great
So I did not have to replace the chinese SU with english SuperUser.
I have installed SuperUser by ChainFire from PlayStore,
I tap on the "I"
I tap on the "check for update"
I tap on "update"
but the response of "make sure su works" is Failed
Do you know how replace Chinese interface by english interface because my mandarin is not very rich
Thank's a lot for your answer

The first time through I was able to make the Chinese app go away just by installing superuser, and upgrading the binary. But when making the tutorial the app got reinstalled. I think that if I delete or disable the app, I might lose root. So for the time being I'll leave it. It isn't hurting anything and my prompts are all in English from Superuser.
**See update a couple posts below **
To unroot you would just go to the archos website and follow directions to do a destructive upgrade with the latest firmware.

Now I got rid of the Chinese Superuser completely
1. Make sure the English Superuser is the one in charge by opening an app that needs root. I recommend ES file explorer since we'll need it in the next step. If you get prompted in English, you are ready to proceed. If not, follow steps in the first post to replace the su binary.
2. Find Superuser in Android app settings, the one with the blue icon
3. Clear its data
4. Use ES Explorer to delete /system/apps/Superuser.apk (note that it also shows the blue icon)
If you can't delete it, it is because you need to go into ES Explorer's advanced settings and mount read/write on the system partition.
Now the pesky thing will never come back.

Ok, just rooted my 80 titanium with vroot v1.4.3. Some steps are a little different but I succeeded.
I installed English superuser and updated binaries. Thing is the Chinese SU app kept popping up when I had to set permissions in every app. Going back to English SU I had to update binaries again.
My work around was to update English SU binaries and immediately froze the Chinese app. Now English SU app is in control. If everything goes fine these days I will uninstall the Chinese app.

Updating the binary will only update the su binary that was added during the root process. If this fails, the worst that could happen would be for you to lose root and have to start over again.
Likewise, my proposal to delete the Superuser.apk is also removing something that was added during the root process. So far we haven't removed or modified any system files, with the exception of changing the directory and file permissions as part of root.
My main complain about this tablet is the battery life.
Would be nice to discover a few things:
- find the problem behind all alarms and wakelocks running (screenshot) . I think its preventing the tablet to deep sleep well.
- calibrate battery and see what happens. This video shows good results. I talked to the user who upload this but he has no longer the tablet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRUmJgPHR3Q
- find an app or mod that allow us to decrease the brightness a little more. The minimum brightness level is just too bright to use in total dark room. I know there's filters, but I want to gain a little battery with this.
- find a working app to limit and overclock CPU speed

My main complain about this tablet is the battery life.
Would be nice to discover a few things:

I guess I am happy with the battery life, but only because I knew it would be an issue and I leave Wi-Fi off unless screen is on or it is plugged in. I won't try calibrating the battery because that video was probably made with the earlier firmware and we have the updated one which may have resolved whatever issues he was having.
Have you tried installing a recovery? I don't want to experiment too much until I can do a nandroid backup.

Just testing performance with CPU underclocked to 1008 MHz (antutu benchmark test of 9500 points). Will see if this have a positive result in battery performance.
No recovery yet.
I recently bought the Archos 97 titanium hd and I have a problem with a weak signal. I upgraded to the latest version but problems such as weak wifi signal and some graphics problem are still there. Will I with rooting fix these problems and what are the main advantages of rooting?

I'm surprised that the update didn't solve the wi-fi problems, are you sure it was successful?
Rooting is not a magic bullet to solve your problems and at present, the advantages are limited because there are no custom Roms for it yet. If you don't have a specific reason for gaining full administrator access to your operating system, then you probably shouldn't bother.
One S: s-off super cid

You could test this alternate ROM and check if those problems are solved:

Sometimes I have to press two or three times the power button to wake up the device.
Maybe this problem appeared with root process? Maybe with the underclocked CPU?
Anyone with this problem?

Updating the binary will only update the su binary that was added during the root process. If this fails, the worst that could happen would be for you to lose root and have to start over again.
Likewise, my proposal to delete the Superuser.apk is also removing something that was added during the root process. So far we haven't removed or modified any system files, with the exception of changing the directory and file permissions as part of root.

The brincking of my Tablet was not after the root process. Your solution did it successfully.
I bricked it when I changed the vold.fstab file to swap memory between external and SDCard ... Now I'm waiting the back to technical service of arnova to unbrick it.
Thanks a lot i finally root my tablet.. But one thing after rebooting the tablet superuser went back to chinese language..
