I have a Sprint Epic 4G that doesn't even come up in device manager when I plug it into my computer, in any instance. I've tried everything I can think of. Recovery mode -> mount USB, download mode, tethering mode, debugging mode, mass storage mode, 6 different cables, including the cable I used to flash this phone (and others) with no issues on several occasions. I've used every USB port on several different computers (work computer, laptop, home computer, girlfriends computer, etc) 3 of which I've successfully used to flash phones in the past. Every single way I try it gets no reaction from any PC, it doesn't even try to install drivers, because the computer doesn't see the phone when it's plugged in. The phone however does charge when connected to the computer.
I've also tried different SD cards, wiping all of my caches and wiping the data folder. I'm running Kernel Version 2.6.35.7, Baseband EH06, Build number GINGERBREAD.EH06, 2.3.4 firmware and CWM 3.1 is installed, so I could try downloading a zip onto my phone directly and flashing something, if someone has a suggestion.
Also, if there is no apparent solution, is there a way to flash to complete stock just using CWM recovery so I can take it back to sprint and get a replacement? If so, can someone point me to a thread that contains instructions and/or download links?
Every computer in my house is running windows xp (zero out of three being laptops) and I can not connect my phone. My girlfriends laptop is running windows XP and I can connect and my friends laptop is running windows 7, both read it fine. Two more desktop computers running vista and 7 are able to read it so I've come to the conclusion that desktops running xp can't detect our phone lol.

Search for ReRFS ROM in development forum. You will still be stuck with the EH06 modem though so unless you get a snotty tech they shouldn't notice. They are still suppose to fix it regardless of root.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try that.
Update: Flashed to stock, stick with CWM 3.1 recovery, still no dice on the usb connecting to anything. Any more ideas before I flash to stock recovery and take it back to Sprint?

I have installed and reinstalled the samsung windows drivers about four times.
My phone has not yet been activated and I'm not sure I'm going to attach it to service for the foreseeable future instead of possibly using it as an ipod touch with a keyboard.
I have connected the phone to my laptop one time. I feel asleep with the phone searching for drivers (the drivers had already been installed but the status bar message said it was searching anyway) and when I woke up it seemed fully connected. I was able to cwm3 root the phone but bricked it I think by putting an ext4 filesystem on without moving immediately to an ext4 rom.
I've restored it to stock and through wifi updated it over the air to ec05
Ever since then I have never been able to connect using any of the usb ports, trying two different usb cables, the oem and a generic micro-usb cable and using either windows vista or ubuntu on this computer.
Clockworkmod reports that the phone is not connected and I am not able to see the phone as a hard drive when I set it to mass transfer mode.
In download mode, odin is able to communicate with the phone reliably.
I've repeatedly tried all ##8778# settings and I've set debugging mode off and on. Device manager shows that the phone is connected to port COM7.
Is it possible that the activation program is preventing the USB connection? I would think not because the activation status has not changed since the one time it did connect, but I'm at a total loss for any explanation.
My next step is to try another computer but I don't have one handy.
Is it possible to root a phone only through odin, or to put a file onto the sd card that can root without the use of the computer?

Thanks. I'm on ec05 now, so I'm OK with that. I'd like to root either with or without resolving the usb connection issue.
Is that possible at all?

While it isn't JUST a root that you are doing, as stated by budderocks, you can flash the pre-rooted EC05 tar file through Odin, although it will require you to reinstall any apps you currently have. This will start you out with either a stock(ish) setup, with root already included (not sure about Clockwork though), or you can use the one modified for the ext4 filesystem with CWM 3.0.0.6 included which will convert it to ext4 the first time you boot into recovery.

I have been through this myself and came short of beating my head against a wall before reading that it "may" be a cable issue.
Well, after tyring everything else, (because it couldn't be something as simple as changing to a different cable, right??!!) I pulled out an old cable from my Blackberry days and BAM - my laptop searched for and loaded the needed drivers and sees my phone everytime I plug it in now. I have also used a cable from a friends phone (not a Blackberry) and my laptop still sees the phone so I'm not advocating for Blackberry cables specifically.
Bottom line is - the Samsung cable is a piece of crap. It may work for a day or a month, but it will soon (for 98% of Epic owners) become nothing more than a charging cable before long.
Try using a different cable (not a Samsung model ) and see if that works. If so, then ODIN/one-clicks become your best friend(s)!!
Hope this helps!

First and foremost, been a long time lurker here (first time poster) on XDA... and the community here is just outstanding.
So I've decided to root my epic, everything was great. I used the one click 2.5CWM root, and realized I wanted to try out another rom that wasn't compatible. Reflashed with the( ReRFS.Format.ROM.EC05 ) (since it kept me stuck on the samsung black screen) then went ahead and flashed the zip for CWM 3.0.0.6 with viperrom,...
Now here's where it gets interesting... I want to be able to revert back to a stock rom, and flash syndicate... but for some reason my CWM wont allow me to flash any .zip files from SD card. It says "failed to mount /sdcard". i formated it on my pc, it reads / writes fine, but anytime i boot into clockwork, it can't mount my sd card. I can still boot into my phone, it's still usable for daily usage, but it just doesn't look like what I like.
Now I've tried running Odin, but when im in the download mode, odin will not recognize my phone being plugged in. I've downloaded the proper drivers, for both my win7 x64 and 32 bit computers, tried every USB port etc... and it still wont work.
any idea on what I can do to get my CWM to work?
Use Odin with a non-stock cable.
I've tried it with 4 different data cables, 2 Samsung OEM, and 2 generics...
Have you tried a different PC, or Heimdall?
Make sure you're using Odin 1.61, the correct PIT, and the EC05 TAR.
http://k0nane.info/rom/odin-pit.zip
http://k0nane.info/rom/SPH-D700-EC05-8gb-REL.tar
Also there is a small amount of phones that did not want to Odin correctly unless the battery was out. You can try that too.
So I've tried to run Heimdall, and i'm still experiencing the same issue that I was having with Odin.
Every time I plug in my device via USB (samsung OEM data cable, only cable i have that will prompt that a device is connected) windows will pop up with a message, device not recognized (unknown device in device manager when in download mode) it seems to be fine and it'll recognize it correctly when I have the phone running (booted up into the rom)
I ran the zadig.exe for the drivers, and nothing seems to work.
Instead of Odin, try the SWUpdate for EB13, it is much less fickle
Place your phone in download mode (keyboard #1 and the power button) and see if it will connect/install
If It works, you can then move on to either upgrade to EC05 using the stock update zip, or install CWM and flash your FAV ROM
My comp doesn't seem to want to recognize the phone anymore... everything is "unknown device" now
Yeah get your hands on a blackberry cable. My guess it will help your cause. Make sure the drivers are installed on your pc as well.
im just going to reformat my netbook and do a fresh install on the drivers, too tires of the "guess work" i'll keep you guys posted on how that goes
SUCESS!
my epic is back to full stock via Heimdall. (took a little playing around to get)
@qbking77 - Thanks for the tip, I ended up using a 7" black berry data cable, and heimdall recognized it.
The only thing now though, all of the wires i have now, don't seem to let me use One Click Root CWM 3.0.2.5 I'll try it with my OEM samsung cable (that worked before) when i get home, I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks again!
I connected my SG2 via USB cable to my PC and started seeing this error
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
I have tried everything from changing cables/PCs/enabling/disabling USB debugging to *#7284#, and none of them work ...
Is the device bricked, is there any hope of revival..please help i got this phone myself paying $400
Does your phone turn on and work and a connection to PC the only problem? If so your not bricked...you prolly need to install the drivers in order for your PC to recognize it so install kies on your PC

Yes phone turns on, charges through the port...just that it is not recognized by the PC....what could be wrong?
As I said previously you probably need to add the drivers on your PC install kies on your PC

Make sure you use one of your rear usb ports also. I had an issue with drivers installing in a front usb port.
Phew it turns out to be the samsung driver..I believe kies update must have corrupted and stopped the pc from recognizing the phone....

The definition of "bricked" is having a really expensive
... brick. It means your phone doesn't turn on no matter what you do to it (short of a JIG and that's not guaranteed) the "USB device not recognized thing" is a problem w many windows devices my vista computer does it all the time and I just switch ports.

Having same/similar issue
Hey, was there every a solution found for this?
I'm having basically the same problem...using the cable that came with my phone, and have installed Kies (fresh). I have tried toggling multiple settings. I tried uninstalling kies and reinstalling. I tried using pdanet for the driver. I have tried a few different roms, as well: Darkside 2.4, 2.5.1, and gingersnap 1.21. All have had the same result.
When I plug the phone in, it beeps (charging) but no notification for usb settings (disk drive, sync, etc). On my computer, it pops up "USB Device Not Recognized" and says the device has malfunctioned, etc, same as OP.
In Device Manager, it shows under USB as "Unknown Device".
I have tried this with two Windows 7 laptops, and a Windows Server 2008 R2 desktop. Also tried with a different cable. This cable was able to transfer data from an external hard drive today, so I doubt anything is wrong with it.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I tried without the drivers, and went to wireless and network > USB utilities. The only option in there, however, is "Connect storage to PC". If I try that, then plug it in, the phone acts like I hit the back/undo button. It doesn't show that anything is connected, nor does it give any other options. At this point on the computer, I get the "USB device not recognized" error.
This happened before installing Kies/Drivers, and still happens after installing drivers and kies.
try another usb cable
i had the exact same error, and it ended up being a good USB cable that went south
I will try a different cable when I get home - Have a month old cable for a mytouch 4g that I know works.
Okay, I tried it with the other cable, on a desktop in the rear port. same thing...Phone start to charge, and I get the error that the device malfunctioned, yada yada.
Any other ideas? Should I try to connect in Download mode?
Alrighty, so in the end, I ended up completely unroting, using terminal emulator to remove superuser.apk, busybox, and su and putting right back to read only. Then in CWM, flashed a stock 2.3.5 ROM (Zedomax). However, I now have the 2.3.5 ROM and the 2.3.6 KL1 Kernel...
I'm planning to return to Tmobile/Samsung - will the kernel and rom versions not matching be a huge red flag??
Any help is appreciated. I have tried to flash the 2.3.5 kernel, but I always get an error that it's not signed/verified.
Ideas?
I was hoping to grab the 2.3.6 OTA update, but it says there is no firmware update. Is there an update file I can put on the SD card and update using the stock recovery?
UPDATE:
I called T-Mobile Customer Service today, and went through the "troubleshooting" with them again. They ended up sending me a new one, overnight. They didn't ask anything about doing anything custom with it like rooting or other modifications.
I'm not sure if it made a difference, but I'm within 90 days, and also have the "best" insurance/warranty coverage through T-Mobile, and whoever their insurance provider is that I signed up for when I bought the phone.
Final charge is for $5, which I was told is some kind of fee from Samsung, but will appear on my bill.
Anyway, not too bad. Can't wait to get rid of touchwiz again when I get the new phone!

FYI, I just went through the same thing. Decided to finally root my phone after owning it for 2 weeks.
Phone nor the phone would recognize USB data, but would charge. Tried another cable and no luck.
Rebooted the phone. Works like a charm now.
First off i rooted my phone and had a custom stripped official OS loaded. Worked fine.
After about 8 months my USB had charging issies (had to wiggle cord to make it work) eventually it quit all together. I had the USB port repaired by a tech. My charging works now. BUT Ive had random issues with the phone so one day i decided to update to the official software, and didnt want to bother with custom OS's anymore. I plugged my cable in the computer to use Odin and flash an official T-Mobile OS so then it would overwrite the rooting and get me back to where i could update OTA in the future.
Well, the USB no longer connects to computer. Not by different cables, not to different computers, not by different ports, not by storage mode, not with or without USB debugging, not by uninstalling the USB in the computer for the drivers to reinstall and not even with updated Samsung drivers. It will ONLY charge. NOTHING recognizes it, not Windows 7, XP, Keis, Odin. It doesnt even ding when connected.
So im left without UBS connectivity. I downloaded the newest OS for T-Mobile, put the SD card in my computer and moved the .zip there, then tried using the CWM i had from the custom OS and Root to apply the update via SD .zip file. It wont install it.
[EDIT] One more thing... I can get into recovery mode but NOT into download mode (as the USB wont connect) the phone just vibrates and restarts normal booting.
How can i install firmware without USB/Odin/Keis?
Wifi internet sharing, hotspot, remote desktop, blutooth, sd card? anything?
If you still have a custom recovery, should be able to just grab one of the stock firmwares that are put into a cwm package and be good to go. Often people stick them up here when released so others can get them too.

A few weeks after rooting and installing CM10 on my GS3, it stopped recognizing any form of USB data connection. It still charges from both computer and wall adapter, but I cannot initiate a data transfer or recognize my device using ADB.
I have tried:
three different OEM Samsung cables (from SG3/SG4 phones)
all the ports on two different Win 7 laptops
all the ports on an Ubuntu desktop
enabling or disabling USB debugging
with different combinations each time. No "USB connection" dialog has shown up on the phone, and no "new device" dialog has shown up on any of the computers. I know that I can get ADB working with a different Android phone (HTC Inspire 4G) so I know that my main laptop has USB ports that work and the cables I've tried work as well, so I'm left to assume that the issue is with the GS3. External visual inspection does not suggest the USB port on the phone is damaged, and the phone is only a year old, so I don't believe that is the cause.
Is there a system setting that I may have modified on the GS3 that would disable all forms of USB communication?
(The end goal is to get at least ADB working so I can try and recover some deleted files from the internal memory; I haven't found a reliable method that does not require ADB so I'm trying to get that to work. I know that transferring files on or off can be accomplished with the external SD card or over Wifi but that is not what I'm looking for)
Any suggestions from anyone?
I am not sure. Could be a software issue. I would try backing up your current cm ROM and try installing a fresh touchwiz ROM to see of that works, to rule out software issues. This could also be a android 4.3 issue. Could try stickmount or a similar otg app from the market.

I don't think any OTG app like stickmount will help; I'm not trying to connect devices to my phone. I'm trying to get my computer to recognize my phone (and vice versa) in order to get ADB working.
If I can avoid flashing a RAM I'd like to, because I'm still interested in recovering those deleted files. If that is the only thing that would help, though, then I'll do it. Any other suggestions?
Install Kies and that should get the drivers for the pc in place. Odin should recognize the device when it is in the download mode. If that works, then the pc to phone connection is OK and I'd look to software instead of hardware.
Or, if you boot into your custom recovery, either CWM or TWRP, you should be able to get ADB to recognize the device and issue commands including pulling the files on Internal storage. TWRP also has a file browser built in that might be useful.
I have tried uninstalling any Samsung drivers then using the SGS3 toolkit to install the official drivers, but that didn't change anything on the PC end.
Additionally, I tried finding my device while it was in recovery using ADB and there was no connection indication either.
I currently have CWM installed, but I didn't see a mounting option like I've seen for TWRP. Can I flash TWRP without a computer?
Or try this out: Download mode>Connect via USB>Let Windows download and update all drivers until the notification in the bottom right says it's ready to use>Unplug>Battery Pull>Boot normally>connect again. Voila! It works every time when it's being wonky and its a simple way that doesn't require a bunch of downloads!
installing insecure adb might help
Rebooting into download mode does nothing.
I believe rooting and installing CM10 means I already have insecure adb?
thanks

what is the next step? I have followed this thread and have the still have the same issues.
