does anyone know if its possible to unlock the emmc write protect on an slcd incredible running 3.21.605.1 firmware?
its a junk spare phone im trying to revive, and i need to get it s-off and a working recovery. becasue of the issues it has, unrevoked does not work.
because of s-on,flastboot flash does not work. nor does using z4 for temp root then flashing CW with rom manger.
becasue of s-on,emmc write protct i cant use rewrite mmcblk0p21 with a new image,it just boots to the ! and triangle.
any ideas? if i can get a recovery,i can get s-off,then have some other options to try and repair it.
thANx in advance for any info
Is that froyo or eclair? unrevoked should work.
Unrevoked has s-off for froyo and eclair which is why I asked.

No... the phone has issues, unrevoked will not work,as I mentioned above.
3.22.605.1 is the oldest froyo you can run on a scld without getting the black screen.
I can get temp root with zergRush or psneuter, but I can't flash a recovery without disabling the write protect. Wpthis is not working.
Thanks for the reply.

you are froyo right?
why doesnt unrevoked 3.32 work?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
make sure you have the hboot drivers installed on your pc too

i have done this to 4 different SLCD phones with no problems.

unrevoked forever. You flash from hboot. All it does is disable write protect so you can flash custom update.zips such as clockwork.

yes, unrevoked 3.32 works fine for normal, functional slcd incredibles. this is not my first rodeo, trust me it wont work on this one,as i mentioned it has issues. specifically it forgets all its settings every boot, including personal data and user apps. its literally like a factory data reset every time the phone is booted. to add to that, there is only a few minute window that i can do anything in the OS before things start force closing and the phone is literally unuseable.
running unrevoked boots the phone to hboot, does some things, then reboots. when it comes up i have to manually re-check usb debugging to get it to continue. it runs root, then fails, every time. i have run it several times in a row,it wont work.
trying to get permanent root with z4 or visionary does not work either, due to the described reboot issue.
getting temp root with z4 or visionary sometimes works, sometimes will even let me flash clockwork with rom manager, but the recovery does not actually get written due to the s-on and write protect.

unrevoked forever is flashed in a custom recovery, not in hboot. i need recovery for that to work, and i need to unlock emmc write protect to get a recovery.

if you know of something different, please let me know.

I just unrooted my phone by running the RUU update for 3.29.xxx and at bootloader screen, it is still showing S-OFF. Shouldn't it be S-ON? I'd appreciate some feedback as I am heading back to the sprint store and want to be sure the phone is completely unrooted. I recall the other time I ran this same procedure, it went back to S-ON.
TIA
You need to flash the Unrevoked s-on tool. It can be found in several unrooting threads.

Thanks. I suspect it was the tool I used to root that had the Unrevoked component (never had this problem first time around); should've read the fine print...

so you need to re-root (maybe with unrevoked even) and then flash the s-on tool through recovery. it can be found in the unrevoked wiki. after that, then run the ruu.

glad i could help. another reason people dont like unrevoked is it is now outdated. if you run it with the new protected hboot 2.02, you will get screwed pretty bad.
it used to save people hours of struggle, now it kills ruthlessly (haha)
Just flash this as PC36IMG.zip:

Does this downgrade HBOOT to .76.2000? If not, please list the exact steps + files to use. I have copies of Hboot_0.76.2000.zip and Hboot_2.02.0001-Patch but not sure of the other in which to flash them.
Thanks.
EDIT: I was able to get back S-ON, although I observed that bootloader doesn't show the updated value after flashing the unrevoked-s-on zip; not until you attempt to flash the stock PC36IMG file. The above RUU allowed me complete the unrooting process (now with hboot 2.02).
I guess the other pressing question is why do I need hboot 2.02 and not .93 or .76.2000?
So I tried to run Unrevoked 3 with my friend's Hardware 0004 EVO. It recognized the phone and started rooting, but it didn't work. Unfortunately, now it only has S-Off and no superuser or custom recovery and he would like to go back to s-on.
Can I just flash the Unrevoked_forever_s-on.zip? And how should I do it since there's no custom recovery?

Unrevoked works on hardware 0004, and the 3.70 software. Sometimes it doesn't run correctly or completely the first time. Run it again, and be sure that there are no programs on your computer that are trying to communicate with your phone whein its plugged in to USB (pdanet, dropbox, music syncing etc). I would run Unrevoked again until it works. If not, download a PC36IMG or RUU and flash back to stock. You can't flash the s-on tool without recovery, so you'd need to RUU back to stock, or flash PC36IMG using the bootloader, get to stock, then re root. But yea, I know for sure that Unrevoked now works on all versions, they updated a while back. I've used it a few times, no issues. Good luck.
All PC36IMG's and RUU's can be found here:

I use Amon Ra (you can search for it here), rename it to PC36IMG.zip and transfer to SD card.
Boot into bootloader (power off, then volume down + power key).
It will then find the file, ask you if you want to run/install, and BOOM.

Yes, move it from pc or download it.
Go into recovery and install zip from there
S-Off doesn't equal root. It takes the security off so you CAN root.
Flash the recovery, as posted, and then flash a ROM. The ROM have the root exploit in them and should all come with Superuser, which is what allows your programs to use the root exploit.

If you are having an issue just go through the root method again and this time say YES when they ask you about Clockwork. This is if you are having issues flashing a recovery. It wont hurt your phone.
Suggestion - If you are entering the world of rooting and flashing roms, one of the most important things or probably the most important is to read and read again then when you think you got it read one more time. Alot of info in xda. follow OP's instructions to the letter and you will be ok...
Good luck

I have done it over and over .. watched the video posted in another thread. I have tried different su files posted and same thing. I can install custom roms and it works great. I have superuser icon in apps.. no apps listed.
rom manager says not rooted.
terminal says not rooted
Yeah, the process is get S-Off, which removes the security
Flash Recovery, so you can flash ROMS, Kernels, etc.
Flash A ROM, which will have root, system files, etc so that you have a setup to work with.
Think of it like setting up a new computer. Once you get the components, you have to format your hard drive so it'll hold the operating system.

This phone was rooted already, then today I returned it to stock since the cyanogen7 that was on there did not... somehow... have the menu option to "update profile" I needed to change my phone number. I wanted to re-root, but I'm having trouble where to begin.
In the Power+Vol Down boot screen, it shows S-OFF, and HBOOT 2.10.0001
I cant make Revolutionary work because 2.15 is the lowest HBOOT it accepts.
If I choose the "recovery" option in that list, I get a black screen with a red triangle/exclamation point icon over an icon of the phone. I have to take the battery out to get the phone back on.
The phone does work, btw. But I miss the stuff I get when it's rooted. Anyway... what do I do now? How do I get the recovery/cyanogen7 on there if I cant get superuser permissions?
I used some other method back when I rooted this phone, but I haven't seen anything yet to spark my memory of the steps.
U are already s-off. No need for revolutionary. Go to dev thread and look for amon_ra recovery. Download it and follow directions to flash it. Then download whatever rom u want and flash that. The red triangle just means you have no recovery.
Support TrevE !!
I thought Revolutionary was how I got the custom recovery on the phone, which I need before I can root? I;d like to put CWM on there, since I have a paid version of Rom Manager already, and I believe they work together well.

Okay, I did the Bootloader/PC36IMG.zip thing, and then I loaded the cyanogen7.1 zip and applied it. I got a load screen loop one time, but after taking out the battery and booting again, it loaded into cyanogen. I dont see the Market in the menu tho...
Rom Manager is installed though, but to do anything it wants to install CWM. So do I let it? I need the market, obviously. If Rom Manager is to be avoided, what replaces it? I liked how everything was in one place, with auto backup's and recovery of the phone, etc...

You'll have to uninstall rom manager as you need CWM recovery. To back up, simply backup all your apps and data in tb, boot into recovery, select nandroid restore/backup, selecet backup, and you NEED the first 3 checked [boot, system, data]. Also if its your first, backup wimax as well, then copy it to your pc for safe keeping, in case you ever lost your wimax keys.

There is no reason to "upgrade" to revolutionary. Unrevoked is the same thing as revo. Just unrevoked doesnt work with the newer hboots. If your already s-off in bootloader there is no difference. U can use any rom regardless if u used revo or unrevoked. The whole object of rooting is to get s-off. Once you have it there is nothing more you can do. Ive used both on unrevoked on my original evo. And revo on my newer refurb. There basically the same. Easy auto root pretty much.

There are several different ways to go.
The quickest way (might not work and is just a temp fix) is to download, then unzip the zip file to EVO-RECOVERY folder on your computer. Boot the phone into RECOVERY (with the red triangle), then run the recovery-windows.bat file if you're running Windows on your computer and see does that do anything. Whether or not it works would tell me exactly how the phone was rooted.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/EVO-recovery.zip
The phone is s-on, you're going to need to run unrevoked to gain s-off so you can flash a recovery. You can't flash any unofficial zips in hboot with s-on. Search for unrevoked and your hboot version to find the correct version of unrevoked to unlock the bootloader(hboot).

Good point. I rooted and S-off via toast right after launch. I guess if someone only did his first step it would look like that. Good point. Speaking of toast, I just threw up quotes of his latest post all over general subforum in all the threads where people are trying to decide if they want nexus or Evo LTE.
They locked the one X down like no tomorrow. Team win and toast can't get recovery to access USB for mount while in recovery. Making me lean nexus.

Did you ever try the EVO-RECOVERY download. No one said anything about pressing volume up and the power button. When you see the red triangle, do not do anything except run the recovery-windows.bat file on your computer (after extracting the files to the EVO-RECOVERY folder) to see if a recovery menu appears. I forgot to mention that the phone must be connected to the computer.
If that does not work, then you might want to go to the unrevoked site and follow their root instructions.

Perfect, the quickest way.
Download the attached files and place them on the root of your SD card.
Flash the unrevoked-forever from the temporary recovery menu that I gave you. That will turn the phone S-OFF.
Then run the PC36IMG file through the bootloader (power off the phone, then volume down +power buttons) and accept the update. That will give you the latest Amon permanent recovery. I also added the superuser.zip file in case you need to flash it (especially on stock ROM if you need it for superuser permissions).
Thank you Everyone

No problem. I just tried to give you a work around to Toast Method 2 (I see the phone was rooted with Toast Method 1 only) which would also S-OFF the phone, but is more complicated.
You could have also used unrevoked, but you probably would needed to unroot first, then install the Hboot drivers, then run unrevoked (not to mention downloading all of those things) which would have taken some time.
