Anyone tried it out yet, or would be willing to try it out, or think it will work with the n7? If so, could this be the best option(?) for media for those with the 8gb model. I plan on trying it out when I get mine.

Yeah, I'm very interested in this also. Another reason I am not too worried about being limited to 8GB. It would be great if someone who has access to a Nexus 7 could test this out and share their experience with it, if not I will probably just buy it and check it out myself when I finally get mine. I'm interested to see how well it works for basic tasks, gaming, and watching videos/movies. My ultimate dream would be to stream my Xbox 360 games to a tablet like this, and play something like MW3 on the go.

I agree.. I downloaded PLEX and it's been keeping me looking for more.. I wonder if Splashtop HD will support JB and how long it will be discounted 8.99 (usually 19.99) in the play store.. I hope until the n7 delivers

Splash top HD is listed as not compatible with the nexus 7 but the regular splash top is. Also there's a splash top two coming out for android soon. I think I will get this with my credit but I want the kinks to be worked out first.
Anyone try it already?
I'll try loading up my backup from my tab when its comes next week

What's the difference between the HD version and the regular version? I can't really find anything on their website or from Play Store (other than "optimization" for Android 3.x or 4.x tablets).
As far as I can tell the regular splash top is designed for smaller screens.
I wouldn't mind buying this as long as it is still on sale when they have made it compatible

Afaik hd users will be getting free lifetime subscription to the new version when it comes out (at least they are doing that for ipad people). I got an email about it since I own the standard version. Seems like otherwise it's like 1.99 for the app and 9 dollars a year, which still isn't terrible.
i got the free version from amazon when it was the free app of the day!! cant wait to try it out
That's what I have. It works well and looks good to me streaming movies. That's one reason I was wondering what the HD added.

The non hd version is going to be upgraded to version 2
I have just bought it as it works on my phone as well
Will test it on the n7 later on

I just bought the THD version and I can't seem to get it to work on my Nexus 7. The regular HD version works great though. I emailed them regarding this. Anyone else tried the THD version?

I was curious to try it out but the hd version doesn't even show up in the play store on my n7
The regular version seems to work, THD gives me a black screen when trying to remote connect, I'm going to email support and see if there is something in the works, because I am unsure if I need to grab the THD version or the HD.

I'm also getting a black screen on my Nexus 7. It is connected because touches on the nexus translate to the comp, it's just not displaying the video on the Nexus screen.
I'd love for them to get the THD version working. Playing big PC games on smaller devices was always one of the most exciting potentials of Splashtop, and the fact that they support bluetooth controllers and special screen overlays in the THD version is awesome.
It's especially silly because the Tegra tablets they made this version for probably didn't sell at all, but here's the Nexus, which has the potential to sell a whole lot and it doesn't work on it. =(
If anyone gets a response from Splashtop please post it here.

I had emailed Splashtop about the fact that the Anywhere access for free is available for any of the Splashtop "vets", they said that the new feature is unavailable currently for Android, however "we will provide the original SPlashtop Android user the free AAP feature. Please stay tuned, it's coming soon!"
So I guess this means that v2 for HD will be compatible w/the N7? Because it's still listed as incompatible as of this posting...
so should i buy hd now or wait to its compatible? because i already have the normal splashtop from amazon.
Hello this post is to ask for some help on picking the best tablet for myself:
I currently have a 1st generation Kindle Fire. Its been great. Sadly the micro-usb port is somewhat flimsy and my device appears to need to have the port re-soldered because it does not charge/connect to pc anymore.
I need a portable device. I recently bought a desktop. Preferably would like to buy tablet > laptop but a laptop is certainly an option. I use my device for work (apps/books/web browsing) and watching videos - I have no interest in tablet games. I have researched the kindle fire 2/hd, nexus 7, and ipad mini.
My preferences for a device would be
-smaller (7" > 9" display)
-3G/4G > wifi
-android > iOS
-camera/mic options
-easy data transfer (USB/SD slot)
My options are:
1) stick with 1st gen KF and re-solder the charging apparatus while awaiting the next generation android 7" hoping there will be an option with 4G.
-Any ETA info would be much appreciated
2) Buy KF2 9"/4G version
-i understand the new KF2 OS is even more restricted than the 1st gen version with a bleak outlook on loosening/managing it - how severely does this limit the device capabilities?
3) Get ipad mini 7"/4G
-I hate to support apple as to me they are the new microsoft monopoly (super restrictive + high cost). Although cracking the devices is much simpler.
Thanks in advance for the help.
you might want to read this thread to help choose: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350403
personally I would go with nexus 7 for the price vs performance, close second would be kindle fire hd. The ipad mini is priced too high for my liking.

Or, depending on your region, you could search Craigslist for a 1st generation Kindle Fire. In every major city I've searched (US) you can usually find one for under $100, easily. It's a good place to start if you want a good solid tablet for not a lot of money.
Hello I'm thinking about purchasing the fire hf 8.9 my kids. But i would like to know a few things.
1. If i install a custom rom based on stock rom and a new launcher and then remove all amazon stuff. Will it then run smooth like for a nexus 7, and have the vanilla feel.
2. Will it run most of the games from google play.
Thanks

1. It should be fine with some mirror issues, just like sound problem if u are using Harshcode's custom rom. He's still working on it. Be patient!
2. If your device is rooted and unlock bootloader, you can run any apps and games on playstore but the 3d games somehow can't work properly on it.
Anyway, Kindle fire HD 8.9 is a good media device, however if your kid wanna play the games, try to think about nexus 7(it's smaller than KFHD though)
Hope it help you.

IMHO Nexus 7 is lovely but the screen size is just that bit too small and the screen resolution also not as good as the KFHD 8.9. The sound is also much better on the KFHD. I know this because I moved from the N7 to the KFHD 8.9!
I have both devices, I like both, but mostly use the N7 for book reading now.
The KF8.9HD is a great device for movies and gaming, and with Hashcodes CM10 it is very smooth, not quite a smooth as an N7 but very good all the same. (all the games I have played on the N7 play on the KF except for a couple of tegra tuned games.)
I also use the KF for PDF Magazine reading, get a whole page in portrait mode.
The KF is a lot heavier than the N7 and that may need to be taken into account for younger/smaller kids.
Hope this helps you.
Thanks. So generally, you think the nexus 7 would be better?

I'm not sure who you are asking this, but if I had to choose between them I would keep the KF

I have both the n7 and kindle. I bought the n7 first and really like it a lot. Then I saw the amazon christmas discount and decided to buy one for my parents since Android was so good from the n7 experience and the kindle 8.9 hd had several better features such as the screen resolution, size and sound. When I got the kindle that's when things didn't go according to plan. It was so limited with amazon's change that I was shocked. I couldn't even change the language of the os. That was a no go for my parents. So they kept the n7 and I'm stuck with kindle hoping one day to unlock it and give it to them specifically for the larger screen. Now the recent update to kindle have language support so that's good but still I really dislike the kindle interface and it's crippling experience. Now that I was able mod and get cynogenmod on it, I'm reluctant to give it back to my parents! It's so nice and smooth and I have most of my n7 feel back using this with the benefit of kindle features. To summarize, if you want to spend the time and unlock it and compare the n7 and unlocked k8.9 hd, feature wise I would go with kindle but both are a win whichever you choose.
Hi!
I would like to buy one of these tablets.
I was really excited about Nexus and I was ready to buy this. Then I read about that Kindle Fire HDX which has better GPU & CPU and still is available for better price than Nexus.
The only think which makes me wonder is Fire OS. This is very modified Android. If I own Kindle I would like to put there normal Android OS. Is it possible? I would really like to know this.
Or maybe you guys could suggest me any better tablet for similar price?
I would like to use tablet as a normal user mostly. For gaming, movies, music. GPS nav and maybe 3G (but it's not necessary, since Kindle doesn't have it, and about Nexus I am not sure).
Besides I would use this sometimes as an replacement for laptop. To read PDFs and Word documents for work. And record videos for Youtube. Idk what more, so I think that would be all.
Thank you for answers and I am sorry if I post this thread in a wrong place.
Trying to decide between these two devices for my son. It looks like I can get a manufacturer refurb Nook HD for about the same price as a new Kindle (with Special Offers).
He is interested mostly for reading books, so book selection (both buying and borrowing for free from libraries) is a top concern.
Also interested in web browsing, email, and some games.
I'M interested in how hackable it is, installing a better version of Android on it, unleashing some more potential, etc.
Thoughts? Advice? Thanks.
I've just bought 2 of these for my kids ( the new 2015 cheap kindle fire tabets )
Hoping to Install a simple android rom. Is this gonna be any different from the older kindles
