I'm looking for an app or a tweak so I can assign search to triangle or square, also so it can be more compatible with games that don't recognize square and triangle.
First off you have to be rooted, then go into /system/usr/keylayout. Edit "keypad-zeus.kl" with a plain-text editor.
Replace "key 308 BUTTON_Y WAKE_DROPPED" with "key 308 SEARCH ALT WAKE_DROPPED" to make the triangle into a secondary search button.
Replace "key 307 BUTTON_X WAKE_DROPPED" with "key 307 SEARCH ALT WAKE_DROPPED" to make the square into a secondary search button.
If you want menu instead of search, just replace SEARCH with MENU
EDIT: By the way, the number of spaces don't matter. Also, make ABSOLUTELY sure the file's permissions stay the same (owner=read/write, group=read, others=read) otherwise you will not be able to use the buttons until it's corrected!
How about using the triggers to switch pages on the launcher? I'm trying to make an Xperia Play optimized interface.

I'm not sure how possible that one is, unless your launcher specifically allows switching pages via hardware keys
I'll check some of the free launchers and see if they do.
EDIT: LauncherPro can use the trackball to scroll through screens, I'm not sure if movement to the left and right can be mapped with the triggers or emulated on the touch pads. I'll look around and see if I find anything, if you already know, let me know.
Is there a list of button functions somewhere that we can assign? Camera, menu, music player, etc.
Triangle works great as search btw! Thank you

This wouldn't be much help since you need the search button, but I think there's a launcher out there that will replace the search button command to any app/activity installed. I also recommend the Camera Mod app from the market that was made for the Xperia Play, it will let you snap a picture using the right trigger.

I was just wondering if there were anymore default functions that could be assigned, not necessarily to a 3rd party function. The camera mod is great! Wish the camera could zoom though :/

Hi, I was wondering if I could remap the trackpad button on my Droid Incredible to the home button. Kind of like how if you press the center button on the iPhone, it goes back to the home screen. Is this possible? and I do not want to flash another ROM. Thanks.

can't we just answer the question? sometimes ppl. I would assume if he has a dinc he knows about the home shaped icon under the screen there, with that said I've never seen this question asked b4 but would assume no bcuz of already in place "home" button

I know there is a button, but I want to use the track pad button for the same function.
I think this would be useful as well.

Look at the Optical joy stick wake thread. It's in the keymap file somewhere. I don't know what all you can remap it too but I know they remapped it to wake the device (though inconstantly but thats a sleeping problem)
Just a thought, but would you not loose all of the intended functionality as a result of doing this? For instance, how would you take a picture or record a video?
I have ruby rom so there already is a record button or camera button on the screen itself so it's not a problem.
-steve
Redemption rom use to have a tweak that let you hold down the search button key and it would start the camera application. This was done by editing the incredible-keypad.kl file in /system/usr/keylayout and changing the line "key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED" to "key 217 CAMERA WAKE_DROPED" i figure you could add a line "key 232 HOME WAKE_DROPPED" and get the home to open when the trackpad was pressed, but that didn't worked.
I've been trying to remap my trackpad to camera since I rooted my phone and still can't get the working. I hope this thread will spread some light on how to properly remap the DPAD_CENTER button.

Those two aplications remove the need for the trackpad button, however its usefulness doesn't end.there. the.ability to.scroll through text to edit without endlessly, 'push and pray' u get it in the right spot I would.imagine would get lost as well. The trackpad also can seek in some flash players too.

Okay. So this is not possible at all? Because i can edit text by zooming in on the website...
-steve
It doesn't seem to be possible... or if anyone has figured out how they don't want to share. Editing the kl files doesn't work like it does for other hardware buttons. Here's my thread asking the same thing:
[Q] Can't remap optical joystick?
would this be possible
if you were to look at the file text for the real home key maybe if you copy-pasted that txt into your trackpad txt file it would do the same function .......just a thought
I know development is kinda sparse here for the droid pro...but anyway someone can modify the camera.apk to allow the side button to work for taking pictures?
yea that would be kinda nice.
Ive got it set up now so that the single side button opens the camera, but it doesnt take pics
Had that feature on my old BB Tour before I switched to the Droid Pro. Really miss that feature. Don't miss much of anything else though.
I posted this on droidforums.net. works with stock GB camera as well as MIUI camera apk which i like a bit better.
I have been wanting to use the side button as a shutter button since I got the Droid Proand it can be done using Button Re-Mapper
You must be rooted to use this app so.... First go to settings>applications>Quick Launch and press/hold side button to clear the assigned app, this setting will no longer work once we remap the button. Open button remapper and scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and click on 246 (Side) and change it to Camera with Wake_Dropped state, apply changes and reboot. This way, along with No Lock app installed, your side button will now wake the phone. Once the phone is awake, press/hold the side button and it will bring up the camera. Now press the side button while the camera app is active and it will snap the pic. Yay.
The next coolest thing would be an app that can reprogram button actions the buttons are pressed/held like on BlackBerry. This would allow press/hold button shortcuts from homescreen without using the search soft key as we have to use now.
THANK YOU for posting this, should be made sticky in a mods page. ButtonRemapper http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464 and no lock from the matter go straight in my howto on this phone.
Another thing on my 3.8... verizon latest rom on settings, applications, quick launch you can do something similar to what you are saying pressing search + letter are keyboard shortcuts, like on BBs!
I'll also share that Toggle 2g/3g

Looking at the softkeys, where is the Menu key? I see Home, Back, and the new Multitasking key, but no Menu. How can this be? The iOS method of integrating all menu options into the application UI is terrible, and what about apps made before ICS? Lack of a Menu key would make them unusable. I must be missing something here, but I can't see what it might be.
A virtual menu button appears in the form of 3 dots. It can be seen in this photo.

Nice catch. Was wondering about that.
Menu items are represented by the 3 vertical dots at the top right corner of apps.
The indication is that new apps should no longer hide their menus, but rather make them intuitive to access in the app's UI.
For legacy apps, we'll probably see a menu button of some type appear along with the 3 softkeys at the bottom.
On my Honeycomb tablet either a button is in the top right corner or another is added to the bottom when menu is needed... I'm guessing HC is a good example of what we'll be getting, and if so I look forward to it
Thanks so much for a useful thread. I was actually wondering about that myself. Glad to know its non-obtrusive and clean

You have lost the search button though. Not all apps will handle this well... I had to tweak an app I was writing because of this (luckily found fairly early during testing on Honeycomb).
Of course for most apps search isn't useful - probably why they removed the dedicated key.

The idea is if the app needs search in order to function properly, you just put the search button up in the menu bar, just like they're doing with settings buttons.
Otherwise, the google search button is at the top of every homescreen now.

The menu button happens automatically (technically, since 2.3 android has called onCreateOptionsMenu at activity startup so it knows you need it already).
There simply is no search button in Honeycomb/ICS - you have to stick it on the options menu, the action bar*.. somewhere the user can reach it. That needs code (not much.. respond to 'search' in the options menu by calling onSearchRequested()).. existing apps will simply lose that function if they run on ICS assuming a button exists.
We're not talking about a lot of apps here.. Not much point in a search function in 'Angry Birds' for example. Just something to bear in mind when developing a new app or trying to work out if your favourite app will work without issue on ICS.
Home screen search is totally different.. that searches the global search (emails, contacts, etc.). Different class of app entirely.
* The honeycomb search widgets are really flexible, but of course not available unless you break compatibility with <3.0.

There are already quite a few phones out there without a search button. My almost 2 years old X10 doesn't have a dedicated search button and i never missed it. The search function is bound to long-press menu at the x10. Given the fact that ICS has a dedicated task switcher button, they could bind the search to long-press home for example. Just an idea though

Hmm.. news to me - I've never seen an android phone without one. Lucky I was doing tablet compatibility testing then
There will probably also be custom roms that put it back (since a custom rom can do anything it likes with the buttons.. change their apparence, colour, hide them completely, make them dance up and down..).

The Galaxy series in general (SGS1, SGS2) do not have a dedicated search button. They have just the menu, home and back buttons. However search is bound as a long press to the menu button which I guess won't be possible anymore. Haven't really found search to be that vital (maybe because I don't want to long press the menu button just to bring it up when I can search in other ways)
Since it's purely software, I know for a fact someone will mod in a search key.

Ok something that we are recently finding out, which is a cause for some xperia play owners to have issues with "O" button on their game pad. It seems Stock or so maps the button as "BACK ALT" while some other roms map it as "BUTTON_B"
The "X" button is mapped as "Dpad_center" which also acts as a confirm, or open app button. Again some roms remap this as "Button_A"
Now when its mapped as Center and Back Alt, it means those buttons will be used as another way to open, click or esc/back out of things. Which some games and apps would close out or act up. (Not all apps tho, since alot of devs allow mapping to be different for XP)
While if its mapped as Button_A and B then its a truly separate button for use that doesnt interfere with normal android or app use unless its mapped to use that exact button.
So the question to everyone here. Which do you feel should be the standard for roms and apps? The generic use of confirm and back for X and O or would you rather those buttons not be used for anything other then what you want it for in your app and game.
Cause devs who make their apps have to tell their app to assume that "O" and "X" are "x mapping in the keypad_zeus.kl file" If its not correct then we wind up with people saying "gamepad buttons dont work!"
So XDA, which should be the standard?
Standard mapping for X and O is:
X - Alternate Center Key
O - Alternate Back Key
Altough these buttons have different IDs so they are recognized as totally different buttons - O ≠ normal back key, but acts the same.
No android-related mapping for another keys such as ▲ and ■ BUT L and R are mapped in Timescape app to switch between windows ;-)
Personally I like this mapping. I was a little bit surprised when I realized that X was center and O was back. I thought that it will be different buttons such as A and B (because ■ and ▲ are recognized as X and Y) and I was wrong. But it's always good to operate through android with our dedicated gamepad but I think it should be supported better. F.e. bringing status bar down when you swipe on touchpad down and bringimg it back up when you swipe up. It would be cool ;-)

Yea which seems diff roms have been changing this standard. Since those buttons even as "alt" act the same as normal ones. Seems to be an issue in some apps. While I dont mind keeping it as the official way, it still brings up the questions. =)

Another thing, Mysticales, there are like... 16 different KL files in CM keylayout. There are maybe 5 or 6 in the other ROMS I looked through. There are also three different 304 and 305 entries in the CM keylayout, while only one in the others that I looked at.
So confusing eh?
I like keeping the X button as keypad center, but having the O button as button B. Woo 3rd option
It seems to me that since Sony is the one who created the SEXP, they would know what mapping is correct for it. From everything I can see, BACK ALT and DPAD_CENTER are the mappings they chose, and therefore the right mappings. Why do I say this? Games dev'd for the xperia play are going to be dev'd using those mappings, and not button_a or button_b.

Got my Gemini on Saturday and just working my way around it.
Was looking at shortcuts for the Gemini Keyboard and found the documentation, however all shortcuts are a combination of a key labelled ? (magnifying glass) plus another key.
For the life of me I cannot find the key that is supposed to be the magnifying glass.
Anyone know which key this is supposed to be

I think those docs are for generic android with a keyboard; google has been pushing putting a "search" key directly onto keyboards.
The gemini shortcuts are mostly the "Fn" key plus another, which should be labelled. e.g. on mine (UK kbd):
ESC: "back" key, or hold down for "Power"
Fn+ESC: "power"
Fn+D: Android "home" key (desktop, not to be confused with traditional editing "home" key)
Fn+A: Android "recent" key (App switcher)
Alt+Tab: App switcher (standard android binding)
Fn+C: Volume down
Fn+V: Volume up
Fn+B: Brightness down
Fn+N: Brightness up
Fn+Alt: Phone app
Fn+Del: Settings
Fn+T: Mute microphone
Fn+R: Screenshot
etc.
Hope I am not hijacking this thread, but continued question about Fn usage
How does one get all the "strange" characters from the keyboard?
By strange, I mean stuff like "{}[]`/" and similar ones.
From the keyboard looks (symbols imprinted at the bottom of the key) I assumed its a combo of Fn+symbol, but it doesn't work.
I am using US keyboard layout and set to use Gemini keyboard as input method.

When you use the Gemini Keyboard app to configure the Gemini US English layout there is actually one more step it seems. Once you've gone through the setup you should receive a notification to configure your keyboard. Select this and select the Gemini keyboard and you will be good to go. I ignored the notification for a while, believing it was prompting me to go through the setup process again but that was not the case.
Hope this helps.
