Internet Browsing Battery leak??? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

have been noticing this for the past few weeks with this phone......while browsing the interent my battery drains fast and i mean 10% in say 5-10 Minutes
its fine for phone calls....and ok for just everything else...but wether it be the stock or dolphin HD the phone will get pretty hot and go threw battery like its nothing
any others with a similar issue?

Don't know if this has anything to do with it but I noticed keeping my brightness on 'auto' doesn't seem to help the battery, in fact it just seems to make it worse. 50% is fine, or drag it down as far as you can tolerate. This screen is amazingly visible even with the backlight down really low, even in sunlight.

I actually noticed this today (I do not normally use my browser) on the phone much since I have no need to do so yet today I was bored and just wanted to goof around and noticed the same behavior.

I haven't used Dolphin in many phones, and the stock brower feels odd. I usually stick to Opera Mobile (or mini, whichever one recompresses via OperaTurbo) and haven't noticed this. Plus nothing scrolls as smooth as Opera.
Opera doesn't have built-in flash support. Maybe the flash is murdering your battery? It's been a concern in the past, I wouldn't be surprised.

This is true when browsing it drains the battery most. Has anybody tried using another browser and has the same drainage?its 3g radio or something else

The stock browser has its own brightness control independent from system brightness. Might want to try lowering that a bit. But yes, overall battery life on this phone is not good at all, hence I went back to my Nexus.

Has nothing to do with Flash. Just the way amoled screens are. If it's not a solid black background it's using a lot of juice.

Desire Z/G2 vs Nexus One

Hi all, I'm thinking of changing over to the Desire Z because I blog a lot on the go, and virtual keyboards dont really cut it for me.
I'd like to hear some comparison between the two, like how fast is the UI on the Desire Z compared to the N1 or Desire. Can you guys gimme some opinions about the screeb quality and keyboard?
Thanks in advance
Sent from my Nexus One
I happily sold my Nexus One for the G2 (which I have a Desire Z ROM on) and couldn't be happier. IMO, the screens are about equal. I don't miss my Nexus' screen at all, and the keyboard is phenomenal.
As for speed, that's obviously going to depend on a number of variables. I run my G2 overclocked to 1.2GHz most of the time and have no complaints in terms of speed. I get 12-15h of moderate use out of the battery at this speed, so that works for me. You can currently safely overclock the G2 to 1.5GHz, though you'll see a drain in battery at those speeds. The G2 out of the box even (800MHZ) is pretty snappy, comparable to the Nexus.
In short, you won't be disappointed.

I'm at 1.5 Ghz on CM6.1 and I would say I get better battery life than stock (.5% drain per hour idle, average of 1.5% drain per hour with moderate use).
I know that is is probably a stupid or anmoying question, but what do you mean by moderate use?
I myself have twitter notifications every 10 minutes, plus some browsing, music playback and i often open the facebook app to update my notifications

Not a stupid question at all.
Moderate use (average, per hour):
- 20 texts (incoming/outgoing)
- 10 minutes of web
- 5 minutes of phone call
- Facebook app (4 or 5 times)
- 10 minutes (or so) of games.
Man, it would seem like I'm always on my phone, but I'm not. Can't exactly play Angry Birds while sitting across the meeting table from the boss.
But in all seriousness, I went a full 48 hours and used 80%. That's with about an hour and a half total worth of PSX and SNES emulators.
I upgraded from a Nexus One (which is now my wifes phone) to the G2.
Impressions out of the box, pre-root/CM6.1:
At stock 800Mhz, i could immediately tell it was "snappier" then the Nexus One OC'd at 1.3Ghz. Meaning, scrolling from homescreen to homescreen, live wallpapers, opening of applications, running graphic intense games, etc, etc ... All felt smoother/quicker.
The BIG difference i noticed (again, out of the box) was the multi-touch/touchscreen.
Take Maps for instance, or even pinch zooming in the browser. This experience was GREATLY improved. I think this is due to the type of screen, more-so then a software or CPU speed improvement. Pinch Zooming, or two finger tilting, or two finger rotating in maps was MUCH more reactive.
Impressions out of the box, post-root/CM6.1:
Wholey cows this thing is FAST. OC'd to 1.5mhz, this thing is insanely fast. That's it in a nutshell, FAST.
Granted, i only had the thing out of the box for a grand total of about 5 minutes before i began my rooting and throwing CM on it, but still.
Hard Keyboard: For me (and I'm no blogger, i type on this thing occasionally) its no big deal. I came from a G1 to the Nexus One, and didn't miss the Hard Keyboard, and going form the Nexus One to this G2, I'm not so great full i have one either. However, there are times I'm thankful i have one, and it comes in handy, definitely. For someone like you, who probably types a lot on the phone, I would have to imagine it would make a huge difference. As far as typing on the keyboard, its not terrible. The biggest complaint for most, is the lack of room above the top row of keys and the phone hardware, leaving no room for fingers to type easily on the top row.... is GONE on this phone. The hinge design allows for PLENTY of room for the top row of keys to be easily pressed. The other big complaint about hard keyboards is the lack of a dedicated Number row, which this phone falls victim to. You can easily double-tap the ALT key to switch to the numbers, and to me its not that big of a deal, but some hard core hard-keyboard users may find this a bother.
Okay, so coming form a Nexus One, which i absolutely LOVED.... actually, ill say still love, am i happy with the G2... DEFINITELY.
If there was ONE thing i HAD to point out that i like the Nexus One more-so then the G2, it would be Weight, and Thickness. Both these things are caused by the hard keyboard, and the G2 is significantly heavier then the Nexus One. Can i get over it, definitely. But anytime i hold my wife's phone now (remember, she has the Nexus One now), I'm like wow, this thing really WAS light and thin.
Conclusion, you'll be happy with the G2.
Thanks dude! That was EXACTLY what I wanted to know!
Guys thanks a million for your help, you cleared up a great many things for me!

Thanks, now I know exactly what people mean by it, and thanks for the info on the battery!

Battery life

How is your A100 battery life?
I've heard its pretty bad from multiple people.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I've had mine now for a couple of days now and can report that battery life indeed is rather crappy. After an hour and a half or so of intensive use watching youtube, playing games, etc. the battery can go from 100% to 60%. Casual use reading books and with wifi off seems to drain the battery much more slowly.
Nevertheless, I like it much better than my iPad (which has a much better battery life) because it's pocketable (for large pockets) and I'll probably be mostly using it for an ebook reader. The form factor is perfect for this.
I would say if you're into heavy gaming / movies, and take lots of long flights then avoid this at all costs, otherwise it may not be that bad depending on your usage. For me it's not such a big deal.

Well multiple informed you wrong. Is it the best out there in the terms of battery life? No, but I get a full day out of it without a problem. I use it to surf the web, play music, a few games, tether to my phone via bluetooth for texting, etc...
If I used it nonstop I would guess that it lasts 6-7 hours with the screen on, longer when the screen is off playing music.
I also have a Nook Color and I would have to agree the battery is slightly less then the Nook but the device is much more powerful as well. The Nook's standby time is much better then the a100 but if it is used they are comparable with the Nook getting a slight edge.
A lot of people complain if they have to charge the device every night, I say so what. I also have to charge my phone every night. I have both chargers next to my night stand and when I go to sleep I am not using them so let them charge for the next day.
The WiFi and the GPS are the biggest drain during idle times I have my WiFi set to turn off with the screen. The GPS hunts for a lock all the time. I fixed it by replacing the GPS config file with one found on XDA that allows for a faster lock.
The only downfall I have with this device is the lack of a recovery or custom rom development. I hope that by the time ICS is released we have a upgrade path to install it.

+1 from me. Literally everything painter said, is what I find as well. 6 to 7 hours of constant use might be pushing it though. I'd guess it's more like 5 to 6. Maybe I just use the backlight set a bit higher.
And yes, the GPS on this thing KILLS the battery really really fast.
Painter, what's the link to the replacement config file?
Yeah, I also have the same feelings for the battery life. Sure, it could be better, but it will last me all day of on and off use. It might be a pain for traveling, but so far, it has served me well.
I don't have a problem with the GPS it only turns on for specific apps but it never just randomly tries to find my location.
I wish the battery was better, but it took my son over 5 straight hours to kill it playing games nonstop. I leave the gps toggled off. For regular use, it will run pretty much all day.

I think that this was the one. There are many gps fixes on XDA. Search for gps.conf for instructions. I was looking for a fix for my phone and put the file on my A100 also. fixed it right up.
Painter, could you upload your gps.conf or cut and paste the contents? I tried the one at the link and it didn't seem to help.
Here is the one that I am using.
1) download the attached file.
2) rename the file to gps.conf
3) put the file on your tablet using adb or root explorer
3a) adb method.
adb shell "mount -o remount rw /system"
adb push gps.conf /system/etc/
reboot the tablet3b) use root explorer to copy the file to /system/etc and reboot the tablet.
4) make sure the clock on your tablet is correct. ( I use clocksysc from the market )
5) install GPS Status from the market.
6) start GPS status. ( the GPS antenna seems to work best if the tablet is held with the SD card slot up. ) It may take a while to get a lock the first time but after the first time the lock will be much faster after that.
Wrong forum. I delete my post.
Sorry

About battery life...
I have a 80G9 Turbo with HDD.
I recently removed the 256GB internal hard drive, and replaced it with a SSD.
I choose a Samsung 840pro (7mm) 128GB, because it has a very low consumption (256GB SSD was too expensive...)
A little difficult to do, and I was afraid to break my machine (and the warranty is lost!) , but now I successfully increased my battery life.
Before it was less than 6 hours (intensive), now i can work for 7 hours or more
(But no real speed increase...)

Oups... Yes, wrong forum (Archos)... I am sorry.

Is this normal? Battery draining....

I am LOVING this phone but this is a bit ridiculous.
I was browsing xda and various other forums on wifi @ 30% brightness for 1.5hr tops.
Seems like the browser is draining way too much juice, I have the GSM 1750mah version all stock.
Try force stopping the Browser then temporarily disabling it. Install Opera or Dolphin and browse for awhile.
Looks normal to me. If all you did with your phone was read XDA via the browser with the screen on as much as it looks like it was on, then yeah, you're gonna get like 5 hours of battery life with the majority of that battery life being occupied by the screen and the browser.
Why were you not using the app to surf the forums? Not that it should matter too much but it does make a difference. And yes that is normal for screen on for 3 hours straight and using network the whole time. Also, changing the browser isn't going to magically fix your battery woes. Finally, watch how many tabs you have open, just checked my browser and had about 13 tabs open since yesterday.
Also not to mention, you're using the browser where you're seeing a lot of whites.
Whites on AMOLED screens use more power than blacks.
Try investing into XDA Premium ($0.99) and set it to black. It'll help.
Can you guys recommend a rom with good battery life

Phone heating up

So when I load my GN with a lot of stuff like redownloading all my apps after a system wipe or use the camera for a long time with flash on, it heats up around the camera but not the battery. I was wondering if it's normal and if others have the same experience. Post if you do pls.

it's normal when using lots of data or heavy 3D gaming. Unless it starts burning you, theres nothing to be worried about.

Thanks for the info. My GN stays at normal temp. when I'm not loading it up do much. But when it heats up, the temp. is not what I'd expect from a phone so I was kinda worried.
Mine gets warm doing anything over 3g/4g for more then 5 minutes, I see it as high as 105 F, which is not too bad i guess. I know they can go up to 140 or so I think before shutting down.
I still don't like it, but I guess all this power in these phones has to get hot.
Yeah with a computer the heat's properly evacuated but with mobile devices like notebooks and powerful mobiles you'll definitely feel the heat.
Still it's very annoying.
IIRC (from Androidcentral.com?), there's a bug in 4.0.2 and below that doesn't turn the camera threads off when using the face recognition signin. You can address this by activating and then deactivating the camera. If not, the camera simply heats up and battery life takes a hit.
I turned off the face-recognition signin and have noticed dramatic improvement in battery life. YMMV.
This do happens to my gnexus. Hot spot comes from the top close to camera area. Happens when I'm playing games or online a lot.

Which browser do you prefer for battery life?

Hey, pretty much trying to get an idea of which browser you think leads to the best battery life? This is pretty much opinion and depends on use age, but I'd also love to see real results!
Personally, so far I've only compared chrome and the stock ICS browser. I mostly use the phone for web browsing, and have had the best screen on time with chrome. Honestly, I haven't noticed much a of a difference between either, but would love to know what your experience has been!
Stock?
Sent from my Nexus in Texas.
Its more important to check your connection and brightness when browsing, which browser really doesn't matter that much browsing black pages is better for your battery than another browser haha.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Well, I was kind of assuming The same screen conditions and such
There are differences though. According to betterbatterystats, the stock browser has very few wake up calls in an hour of use age (<10) whereas chrome would easily have over 100 wake ups in an hour of useage. Also, many different apps drain our batteries at differrent speeds. I don't really expect much of a difference, but would be interesting to see if maybe there is. I haven't been able to find anything to show which might be best as far as battery use.
Stock gives best battery due to the black invert setting. I use ics+ browser even better. Hope chrome gets this setting.
