[Q] Which ROM for me? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a 2nd hand Desire and am loving it, it is still on Stock Froyo with Sense. I have had an Orange San Francisco for a year so am familiar with ROMs, etc but I am confused by the amount of choice about Desire ROMs.
There is so much choice with Desire ROMs that I am after some help, I want a good stable ROM that fits on a small /system partition as I will be repartitioning the NAND storage, I don’t want any App2SD or anything else that will mean storing any apps on my SD card. I don’t need Sense. Can anyone suggest a ROM? I see that lots of ROMs have data2sd and I don’t need that. I was thinking Oxygen would be a good one, am I right?
Thanks,
Simon

[Q] How do I install Apps2SD?

I've rooted my HTC Desire quite a long time ago and am currently running Official_FroYo_2.10.405.2, but have never installed Apps2SD.
I want to install it now as I'm running out of space in the pathetic excuse for an internal memory that this phone has...
My questions are:
- Can I install Apps2SD on the ROM I currently have?
- Do I follow just any guide? even if it's almost 2 years old? (for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535232), Or do I need to look for something newer, or more specific to my phone?
- What should I backup before I install Apps2SD?
Thanks in advance!
I feel best way is to install another rom with it built in. Try leedroid for familiar interface else you can check out miui or cm7.
There are also sense Rome with it.

There are requirements every rom needs which are stated in the main post. If you download cm7 version you need cm7 hboot. Then you must decide if you want something built around newest official release or you want a port, a 2.1+3.0 hybrid etc.
But as you wrote in such fashion your first post, it seems you have some reading to do nevertheless as it seems you mix a rom and hboot. Sorry if I'm wrong.

Try oxygen 2.2.1 which is fast, stable, fully functional, works with stock hboot and is running gb 2.3.5 - its what I'm using right now. Its not sense but its a great rom.
You wont find it on xda as the dev has started his own forum - search google for oxygen forum

Guys, cool it, there's no need to be hostile. XDA is all about helping others, and the Search function, as we all know, is far from perfect. It's not the most efficient way to get to the bottom of what msdl28712 was asking--which is user's feedback of different ROMs. Actually, this is the most efficient way of getting that info: by posting and letting users answer, then let the post sink into oblivion a few days afterwards. So you don't have to PMS over something so trivial.
As to which ROMs are fast, I find that Oxygen and InsertCoin are the fastest GingerBread ROMs. Oxygen is AOSP, built with minimal hacks, while InsertCoin has Sense 2.1 from HTC. They're both lean, as can be seen from the less than 60Mb-sized zip files (less half the size of other ROMs like LeeDroid or Stock ROoted GB). MIUI is pretty slim too, only 85Mb zipped, although that's because the English language pack is itself 25Mb. If you're Chinese, then MIUI is only 60Mb zipped, which makes it a lean, sexy ROM like Oxygen. Those 3 recommended ROMs I've used myself, and have had not one single bootloop (I always do full wipe before flashing, even if I'm flashing a newer version of the same ROM). I think those 3 are the cream of the crop.
I haven't tried your others yet, but that's because I've been so happy with InsertCoin.
I haven't had any issues at all and is nice and smooth. Also the tutorials on the Devs own site are really useful.

Non-existent ROM for the Desire ATM - Either You go S-Off and change HBOOT or you won't get much internal space.
AFAIK 2.3.4 has not been ported yet.

Not at all true. You should read about data2sd.
To op: try gingerburst
You will get exactly what you wish. See the screenshots for my OP. It's designed for stock hboot, and needs only ext4 partition for internal memory. You can increase it to as much as you required. My internal memory is 2.5GB, of which 1.5 GB is still free, lol

Guys, once a thread is started, try to help newbies.. some of the greatest ideas around here were evolved from apparently nonsensical queries
Sent from my Desire running Supernova Extreme - Gingerbread goodness with Unlimited Internal memory
I understand what you're saying, but meanwhile xda becomes clogged up because there is exactly the same question asked in about a million different threads. The same answers can be found in every one of those threads, so why have more than one? *wishful thinking I know*

It's true.. Users should search before posting. But once a thread is started, it's not going to be deleted. So my approach is to give them answers they need so that the thread fades to the backgound.. And in his case, he had specific requirements in his mind, so he has apparently researched stuff before posting and I think it deserves appreciation for that..

Well, if you are after fast then I can recommend the dGB ROM. I'm currently useing it and very satisfied. Although one might find it too "basic" (/system is only 60 mb)

Cyanogenmod 7.1 is smooth, fast and sstable. Best for your needs.
If u need sense like Widgets they are available on market.
Lots of internal memory space as well.
Plus good battery life.
Download ice theme and go launcher ex, best rom there.

Oxygen 2.3.2, with dalvik-to-SD zip flashed afterwards is really fast, great battery and plenty of space.
You can get more space by flashing the Bravo Sense or CM7r2 hboots before flashing the ROM.
I have the Bravo Sense hboot at the moment with the above setup and have 163 MB free even though I have 54 apps installed. There would be even more free space with the CM7r2 hboot, I just can't be bothered reflashing right now!
Search google for Oxygen forums.
I'm using insertcoin which runs very smoothly with no problems. I would recommend you try this

CM7 ...CM7 r2?

So I am running some old Rom on Bravo CM7 ...got it to work ages ago. now i'm back and I keep seeing CM7 r2?
can i use a rom made for this? do i need to "upgrade" to r2? if so, can someone point me in the right direction? sory for beign so noob...i've completely lost the touch to this awesome place!
thanks
oh one more question...how do i know what I have: A2SD/A2SD+, D2W, D2EXT -PART ? where can I check this?
Cm7r2 is a hboot which alters the size of the partitions. Not sure if you know that or not?
If you don't know what you have to move x to sd-ext, you can find out.
in settings, how big is "internal storage"? If 147MB, a2sd. If much more, data2sd

Thanks for the quick answer. Yeah I know what it is, just not whether mine (CM7) is any different to CM7 r2 (which is what i'm seeing all new Roms support). Do i HAVE to get CM7r2? how would I change my hboot is the question I suppose...I've forgotten how i did it once upon a time
and thanks for the checking internal storage trick (it's way more than 147...so must be data2sd)

easiest way I have found to flash a HBOOT (as described on alpharev.nl) is to download the PB99IMG, rename it to PB99IMG, stick it on the SD card and boot into HBOOT mode.
The fastboot-method is also very easy.

Drag-On,
This thread seems to have developed into a discussion about how to flash a new hboot, without answering the original question.
When you say that you are running 'on Bravo CM7', are you referring to the CM7 ROM or the CM7 hboot?
If you are referring to hboot, the main difference is that the original CM7 hboot has a /system/ partition of 130MB. The r2 version has a slightly larger 145MB size.
You don't have to 'upgrade' to cm7r2 unless the ROM you want to flash has a system size greater than 130MB.

The best way to open a new thread about it. I'll beat them to it by recommending either Runnymede or ICS - not sure if it would fit in cm7r2 tho.
