Many thanks, any cheaper alternatives around at all?
I've just gone for this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007K8NN9U/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Will probably get it tomorrow. Tried a similar one yesterday at my mate's house and it worked fine on his 19' monitor.
That's awesome, cheers fella

This looks very affordable. Question though, can it be used to watch let's say catch up tv, or netflx as well?, cause at the moment am working away from home, and we have television that supports hdmi, but no digital service, so was hoping to show this off, to my colleagues.
So would this be like using the Media Link but not wirelessly?

I think so, i ordered one yesterday so ill make a little video when it arrives, show how it works
So got it today, already used it in the 40' HDTV we have in the office and works fine. But it does need a USB connection also for power, which is fine.
I played a 720p movie on the phone and it looked fine, the picture lost a bit quality, but it works.
Can't complain for £6! Does the job

I haven't used the media link, so I don't know the picture quality. But the adaptor I bought works fine
I'm using the bizlink mhl cable on a Samsung le40a559 and it works fine IF you set it up right.
1. Connect HDMI to tv.
2. Connect HDMI to mhl.
3. Connect power to mhl.
4. Wait for tv to search for signal.
5. Connect mhl to phone.
If you connect in any other order it seems to cause headaches at least mine did. Outputting in 1280 x 720p @ 60hz. Noice.
All I need now is root so I can pair my ps3 sixaxis and Shadowgun is getting pwnd.

I picked up an mhl cable for the samsung galaxy series of phones from ebay last week, charges the one x and plays everything from the screen straight to the TV via HDML, works great. Tried posting a link but less than 8 posts but worth looking on ebay for though.
i'm curious if anyone has found an mhl adapter that will working without needing power.

i don't think its possible. the port on any hdmi output (ie bluray etc) would need to have some sort of power source, the mhl doesnt output enough (if any) power to run the hdmi, hence the requirement for a separate power source.
i use my portable charger to run it, works a treat.
Iphones are able to output hdmi with just an adapter, so i dont see why an one x wouldnt be able to.

In order to do this you need an mhl capable TV. Any TV with HDMI will display video but only TVs certified as mhl capable will charge the device via HDMI.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
and if you have a tv with a usb port for flashdrives or external drives next to the hdmi port, would that give power? maybe the output is too low, but it might at least keep the battery from draining right? cause then i could use a short usb cable and avoid having a cable coming from another source. I hate cables but don't trust the media link thing to work well, i've read that it uses some kind of compression for video, and that is a big no no.
I bought a cheap MHL from ebay and works perfect

Did yours work? I bought the same one and it doesn't work, TV recognises the MHL device but the phone doesn't.
Does anyone know if there is a MHL to VGA adapter that works with the SIII? I have an older monitor that I'd like to use with my phone. I'm not really concerned about sound.

The only MHL cable that exists so far is the official Samsung HDMI.
So if you desperate to do that you'll have to spend about $30 on the cable and I don't know how much for a HDMI to VGA converter box.
You've no chance just now. Maybe some day!

No.
This is my problem also since I never know when I will have to connect to my phone to an old analog projector to make a presentation.
If your monitor has dvi then you can get a hdmi/dvi coupler which very cheap. A hdmi to VGA converter is about $38 from monoprice.
I'm thinking of experimenting and getting the mhl to get hdmi, a hdmi to dvi coupler, then a dvi to VGA coupler. The couplers are all less than $3 and I have to buy the mhl adapter anyway.
Good luck to us!

in theory, that should work fine, but what is your plan for audio?
Just go straight for the HDMI to VGA converter because that has the audio out and gonna be more use than DVI.

Just use a pin jack to RCA left/right and plug to headphone jack. Arrgh, too many cables to bring around. At least with my iPod or iPad I can just bring their dock to hdmi adapter or dock to RCA adapter video/audio.

$38 is a bit too much for something that I may use two or three times a year. If my "daisy chaining" couplers/adapters doesn't work then I'll just have to bring my iPad as backup.

Odd that the Google site says the Nexus 4 uses "SlimPort" technology for HDMI out while the LG Optimus G (on which the Nexus 4 is based) uses a normal USB MHL connector. Seems like an odd thing to switch?

I guess the advantage is you can still use the USB port to sync etc while hooked up to your HDTV. If the nexus 4 supports usb host (Stick mount on the GN) then maybe you could play movies off a usb drive onto your HDTV using your N4!

Unless there're two microUSB ports on the Nexus 4, I don't see how you can use that port while it is occupied by this SlimPort. The SlimPort adapter does not look like it has a secondary port on it for USB OTG as well
Only way mirroring and USB OTG can work simultaneously is via Miracast?.

This is the first I am reading of SlimPort as well, but it has a couple advantages over MHL from what I can see
- It does not require external power. This was always a PITA with MHL cables, you had to "power" them from another USB port, usually on your TV. With SlimPort it is just a straight-through cable since it needs no extra power. Much more elegant.
- It can not only output HDMI but also DisplayPort and possibly other formats. Not a HUGE use per-se, but there are some monitors that only have DisplayPort nowadays.
All in all, SlimPort seems to be better than MHL... although I too feel a bit "Appled" by having to buy another cable..
Amazon sells the adapter, and it looks to have a microUSB port on it: amazon.com/gp/product/B009UZBLSG

The Analogix PDF describing the Slimport chip in the Nexus 4 explicitly states that the USB data and Slimport Video out are mutually exclusive. One or the other, much to my dismay. It DOES support charging, as stated in plenty of documentation. It also supports display out without power. This is something that in my experience (Galaxy Note & MHL) that MHL does not allow.
so anybody got the slimport working? or USB OTG? or miracast?

I'm gonna order this one. Since it comes with a 11pin adapter and works with the S4 it should also work with our note 10.1 2014.

Works just as expected. Happy with my purchase.
-USB OTG doesnt require external power works well, speed is high enough to watch movies from USB sticks.
-HDMI needs external power, and works out of the box. Connect and good to go.
But Android really needs some HDMI out options... My TV defaults to 1080p ->24hz<- which is just terribly choppy... I'd prefer 720p 60hz or something if 1080p is too much (shouldnt be since the tablet runs at even higher res/60hz all the time).
Is there a way to change HDMI output signal on the tablet? I didn't find anything.
Another weird thing, the same adapter is not working for my Galaxy S3. No idea why.
Hi all, I'm looking for a similar solution but I'm not very clear on the distinction between the 5 and 11 pin models etc, so finding it hard to make a best guess on what will work for the 10.1 2014.
I tried this because ideally I wanted to go from micro usb to VGA for flexibility:
http://dx.com/p/micro-usb-male-to-vga-female-audio-mhl-adapter-cable-for-samsung-htc-white-233333
but it didn't work.
Giving up on the VGA element and sticking with HDMI, would this have a better chance of success? :
http://dx.com/p/micro-usb-mhl-to-hd...-galaxy-note-ii-n7100-more-black-200cm-177204
Any thoughts appreciated
I bought this from Amazon and has the same configuration as yours but does not seems to work. It does not charge the note. The usb stick and ext hdd are not detected even with attached power.I'm using Total Commander for reading NTFS.I'm not a tech but I have a gut feeling that the S3 adapter is not suited for our note. You can use it for HDMI but I tried it on my charger and it does not charge the device.http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HNEKZZQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Sorry I'm referring to this Callstel 5in1 MHL-Adapter HDMI.
In case anyone was wondering all the standard hubs and adapters made for USB-C laptops also function flawlessly on the V20!
As an example I'm using the Satechi 2-port hub with HDMI and USB-C charging passthrough, I connect the HDMI, a USB to Ethernet adapter and another hub for keyboard and mouse and it works flawlessly! Other hubs work too! I've tried half a dozen or so various adapters and hubs made for Apple laptops and other high end portables.
May I ask which one you purchased?

Yes the HDMI works great, it says 30hz for the adapter but the TVs I've used it with go register it as 1080p 60hz. I use it to play games with my wireless gamepad when I'm outside my home at another person's home and there's no latency and looks crisp.

Here is a condition:
Your USB C charger must have 9V PD and 5V PD, and you're good to go.
V20 supports PD (5V and 9V)

Just curious as to why this is a condition? The V20 is confirmed to support Qualcomm Quick Charge.
While there have been reports it also supports Power Delivery (PD), I don't think I've seen anything official on this.
That being said I have seen some reports that state the Pixel PD chargers worked even better than some QC ones.
However I don't see why you are stating that PD is a "condition" you must have?
I have plugged in my V20 to a USB-C laptop charger with PD and it worked normally.

I have this hub. The HDMI out works great, but I simply cannot get it to charge via the hub. What charger are you using? In this thread, someone has posted that a 5V to 9V PD is necessary. As I search for such chargers on the web, the PD chargers only have ratings in watts? I love the hub other than it will not charge.
