(Q) Rooting problems.. - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I seem to be having a problem rooting my Xperia Arc.
I'm trying to run : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320350&page=12
And first I got the error message : Adb out of date, but re-tried.
The second time I did it, I didn't get that message but now it just says waiting for device...
Nothing else happens - I have followed all the instructions and can't see anything wrong.
Any help appreciated...

Go to task manager on the PC and end any instance of adb, then try again.

If the above doesn't work just copy the
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
From your adb folder and try again

Hi, thanks for the replies.
I tried killing the process but made no difference.
I went through and had another read around and followed the adb guide to make sure I had everything, downloaded things and tried again.
I now get a message adb is out of date, killing.
But then says Daemon started successfully, then does nothing.
I don't seem to have those files any you mentioned anywhere??

If you was following that thread you must have those files, also you must have adb SDK installed you are getting that error because the adb files in the link is different versions to what you have installed so just move the files named
I did it the other way and created files folder in program files\android\sdk with the files from the root package and put batch file in the main directory.
Sent from my LT15i using xda premium

Absolutely no idea then, It said it downloaded stuff, but no idea where it is. I have file searched but brings up nothing.
I do have the SDK yes, but there is no folder in there called usb or anything.
I'll try re-doing it all again from scratch, see if it makes any difference..

That's what I've been following.

Knightlore,
I seemed to have had the same problems as you. Much as I thought I was following instructions, I just couldn't get it to work.
One of the threads I was reading had a link to a flashtool thread(I can't easily link to it at the moment as not on computer). Anyway, it said that the Zergrush exploit was now in Flashtool, so I followed those instructions and it was really easy to root phone.
HTH.
I think it is this thread I followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343

Still encountering the same problem, I have re-done everything from scratch and I still get the same error. Anyone else got any ideas please?
I've managed to root all my other phones, but for some reason this just won't work...

Are you downloading the "tools only" or the "full root"?
Also, you could try the "alternative method"

I would uninstall the drivers, restart and reinstall them.
Double check that Debugging is on.
Also make sure you don't have anything like HTC Sync installed.

If you have a friend with a mac, its much easier on there with www.unrevoked.com.
Either way, I recommend www.unrevoked.com.

+1 on the unrevoked method and a Mac. If you dont have a Mac its still pretty easy just remember to install the Hboot driver and your good to go. You will be rooted in under 5 minutes.
no mac but ill look at unrevoked. but i think my issue is that my phones usb port is a bit wanky maybe. you know like i have to have the usb cord held in the sweetspot for data transfer. Its easy enough to do though. but i noticed that yes in settings my usb debug is on, but that the icon doesnt show on the like task bar or watever you call the bar at the top of the phones screen.
the autoroot "kills htc sync" thats the first thing the batch file does but ill uninstall the htc sync and NOT the driver then try one more time then look at unrevoked.
Wish me luck lol
well did a bit of trouble shooting T_T my phone is just more broken then it used to be. Well is there anyway to root withough using usb? I think i might make a new thread for that question though.

CRT Screen Off Mod

Here is an interesting article that will help you if you want CRT screen Off animation like in Nexus S:
http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/enable-crt-animation
Worked with no problems on my SGC with Rogers ROM.
I actually used NinjaMorph to package the modified resources.arsc into framework-res.apk, but I assume the original method will work too.

Probably no. Most likely you will end up with phone freezing on the Samsung logo at boot. framework-res.apk files are not interchangeable between models, maybe not even between firmware versions for the same phone.
Can you post a step by step guide then? I can't really understand anything here
The step-by-step instructions from the link in the first post are pretty much what i did. Read the comment by ravenstark - if you mount the filesystem with root explorer there will be no need to execute the commands in red in section 8.
The instructions from the link in your post cover steps 3-7. You still have to download the file to your PC (1), decompile it (2) and upload it back to the phone once you are done with it (8).
For the first step which terminal do you use??
(Free Your Android guide)
adb. If you don't have you can download it from here. It is part of the SDK and probably the most essential tool.
The command is exactly as written there

What do you mean? If you're using a Windows PC, then just open up a cmd prompt. You should read the guides at the beginning of that page so you know how to setup adb and the apk tool.
The big picture is this. Connect your pc to computer, pull file from phone to PC using adb, modify file on PC, push file back to phone using adb.
For what it's worth, here's a thread I wrote quite a long time ago, some is not applicable for the Glide, but most of it still applies. If you're going to be mucking around in your phone it's best to know how to do a few things first. Read Before Flashing.
When I try and open SDK or AVD (what's the difference :| ) then I just get a quick terminal screen that closes.
It would be appreciated if someone could just create a flashable CWM version >_<
I hate my inexperience @ this. It keeps saying this isn't "adb" isn't recognized, but I've downloaded it! How can I check?!

Ok, so what have you done so far?
What should be done. Assuming you're using Windows, install the Android SDK. Once installed, launch the SDK Manager. Then from the list of installable options, choose the Platform Tools and I always like to get the drivers. Once done, you will have this path, CrogramFiles(x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools, now you could add this path to your variables in Windows, which would be easiest, or copy the Platform-tools folder to C:. Then plug in your phone via USB to your computer.
Now, if you added the Path to your variables, just go Start>Run>cmd, and at the cmd prompt type adb devices. If you see a device you're good.
If you copied the Platform-tools folder over, then Start>Run>cmd, and in the cmd prompt type,
C:
then
cd platform-tools
then
adb devices
Beyond that, can't really help, never use apk tool. Good luck.

Attached to this post is a CWM update with CRT Screen OFF and battery icon with percent for ROGERS ROM. I'm not sure this will work on AT&T ROM.
Make a backup before applying this update so you can restore if you end up stuck on SAMSUNG logo on boot.
Apologies to the author of the battery mod - I couldn't find his post to link to here...

Hopefully the file tcfx44 posted works for you. Either way, I highly suggest you learn how to use adb and some other tools if you plan on flashing your phone in the future. It could prove useful some day.
Will this apply over OsiMood? I really am not sure if I am using the Rogers, but apparently I am because in XDA App it says I927-R and same with a benchmark.
Doesn't work for OsI mood 2.1.30 or whatever version was released today. I don't want to give up the amazing UI and stuff of OSi. I'm working fine though, so doesn't look like the install failed or bricked. Any revisions?

I changed a bit the CWM mod. Hopefully this one will work. Make a backup of your current ROM - I'm not sure if this mod is compatible with OsiMood.

Anyone having problems powering off and crashing GO Launcher? (then run through media scanner, etc..)
Could you remove the battery mod? I don't like it compared to OSiMood battery >_>
Finally, sorry for demanding so much, could you also put CRT on and ICS animations here?
Sorry!!!!!
Having serious problems turning off. This then affects my underclock.

Stuck in bootloop after messing with framework-res.apk

I was in the process of replacing framework-res.apk and missed the step of changing the permissions before replacing it. I found several threads on how to unbrick the phone by flashing a new ROM but I was hoping I can somehow fix the permissions on the framework file and be done. I installed adb and I already had the LG USB drivers installed but when I run adb devices it doesn't list anything. Windows 7 shows "LG AndroidNet Phone" and a removable disk under "Safely Remove Hardware" so I think I have the right drivers.
Is there hope that I can fix the file permissions?
BTW, I'm a newb so I may be missing something. And also scared of having to flash a ROM
I need help.
do you have CWM in the phone ? if so boot into that and run adb devices and see if it finds it their
No, I don't. Other than using DooMLoRD zergrush to root the phone a few months ago, I have not messed with anything else.

unless your phone will boot normaly to the home screen or you have CWM on it you will haveto flash the koren rom theirs no way to get it into recovery that i know of ... have you tryed a factory reset ?
I replied to you at another thread, so I'll repeat here.
What you need to do is re-root while it's looping. It might take you 100 tries before it succeed , but eventually it should succeed.
After that you can try fix the permissions, but if the new .apk file is not copied successfully first time it might get you in boot loop again, so I'd recommend at that point push the .apk again and then change the permissions.
I found that zergrush dated 2011-10-21 has more chances to succeed, because it has more retries before it gives up, the new version tries only few times and gives up too quickly.
I've attached the root I was using with 3 versions of zergrush.
Open CMD window and execute root.bat, let it copy all needed files to the phone. If it fails, try execute loop.bat, it will just execute zergrush indefinitely , so you can go do other stuff. You can check if root succeeded by opening another CMD window and type: adb shell
then, if it shows sign "$" type su, if it shows "#" you are good to go.
P.S.
This method only works with AT$T stock rom, if you are on LU6200 you are probably out of luck, as their root requires wifi and user interaction...
Having CWM is very handy in such situations, not only because you can restore backups, but because you'll have root access.
Thanks [email protected], I'll give it a try. And yes, I have the stock ROM.
I'm having problems downloading root.zip, I've tried two computers and different browsers, it only downloads 554 bytes.
Yeah, for some reason it was downloading 404 page...
I reuploaded it.
I let the loop.bat run overnight without success so I decided to call AT&T and have it replaced under warranty. The new phone arrived today and I've been busy reinstalling and reconfiguring. I may install CWM just so I can easily recover from a backup in case I do some other stupid thing to the phone.
Thanks guys

can someone help me update without losing root?

ok, i recently got galaxy nexus.
it took me 6 hours to unlock it and root it. (yes i'm a total noob.. i followed the guide exactly but my computer won't install the drivers and took me more than 10 tries to finally do it).
so my nexus is rooted and running 4.0.2 NON yakuju build.
now i want to update to 4.0.4 yakuju build without losing root.
what's the simplest idiot-proof method of doing this?
i searched all over but couldn't find a simple guide.
please help me, thank you.

Geez 6 hours...it takes me no more than 10 minutes to unlock and root. By the way this is a question so next time you might want to stick this in the Q&A threads.
Anyway, if your unlocked you should have a recovery or something on your phone to flash ROMS, I think there is a stock rooted ZIP floating around you can use to update. But use the search and browse the development threads I'm sure you will find something.

thanks but my phone is not verizon.
i got it from wind mobile... one that needs sim card inside..
is there a guide for wind mobile galaxy nexus?
Just use OTA RootKeeper to backup SU and restore it after you update.
ok i downloaded ota root keeper.
but how do i update to 4.0.4 YAKUJU?
sorry but i need a step by step instruction..
Now that you have the drivers installed, updating to anything should be easy. If you lose root, then just use the GNex toolkit to get it back. Using the toolkit, it should take somewhere around 90 seconds to root your phone.
ok that's good,
but is there a clear step-by-step instruction on how to go from 4.0.2 non-yakuju to 4.0.4 yakuju without losing root?
because all this is pretty confusing to me.
i need a step by step guide... for example:
step 1: go here and download this file
step 2: connect your phone to your pc
step 3: put this file into ...
etc..

If you want to switch to yakju 4.0.4, see here.
If you want to update your non-yakju build to 4.0.4, see if the update is available here.
To root, after either method (given your bootloader is unlocked), follow method 1 here.

so if i understand correctly, i should follow your 2nd link and just skip the 1st link, right?

No, that's not what I was saying.
I was saying if you want to convert to yakju, follow the first link. You will be on yakju and 4.0.4. I would recommend this.
If you do not want to switch to yakju (i.e., you want to keep your current non-yakju build), then see if the 4.0.4 update is available for your build in the second link.

hi,
ok i'm stuck.
i'm doing the part C of your guide.
you said extract the file and there should br 6 files ending with .img.
so i got those 6 files and put them into a folder (i named the folder 'yakju').
but where does this folder go?
do i put this folder onto my phone's sd card? or do i just leave it on my pc (they are inside my 'document' folder).
then your guide says : 8) Open a command prompt in the same directory and do the following:
but where do i open a command prompt?
in C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools?

Everything stays on your PC. You need to put the files from the attachment in the same folder as the .img files. Then you open a command prompt in THAT directory.
Did you read the whole post before starting like it was stated at the beginning?

ok, i followed your download link, and downloaded 'Factory Images "yakju" for Galaxy Nexus "maguro"'
then i got 'yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f.tar' file... but your guide says .tgz file?
so maybe i downloaded a wrong file.
anyway, then i unzipped it with 7zip and i got this folder called 'yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f'
inside that folder, i get this file 'yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f' with no file extension.
then i upzipped that file with 7zip and i get this folder named 'yakju-imm76i'.
inside that folder, i have bootloader-maguro-primela03.img, flash-all.sh, flash-base.sh, radio-maguro-i9250xxla02.img and image-yakju-imm76i.zip.
so i unzip image-yakju-imm76i.zip and i get this folder called image-yakju-imm76i and inside that folder i have 5 files : userdata.img, android-info.txt, boot.img, recovery.img, and system.img..
so where do i open a command prompt?
right now my folder structure/tree looks like this:
libraries -> documents -> yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f -> yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f~ -> yakju-imm76i -> image-yakju-imm76i
ok i think i may have found the problem.
your guide says: '2) Download the attachment from this post and extract the contents to the directory created in step 1.'
but there is no actual link.
can you please verify?
Lol. Think of the bright side guys. At least you're not doing it for him. You'd probably be getting calls at 4am. No offense op. First time is the hardest. But after the first the learning curve is easier.

Scroll down and download that. Extract those files, platform tools into the folder you just made. That platform tools will be very important from here on out.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus ADB side load help

Phone Was working fine on latest PA rom until battery died. Upon charging and rebooting up, the Rom some how got corrupted i guess, because it now just boots logo forever. I don't have any roms on the device itself so can't reinstall anything through recovery to try to fix whatever may have got corrupted. I know there is a way to Side Load with TWRP, but am running into difficulties. I do have the drivers for the nexus installed. I can't directly drop files through windows because it doesn't read in recovery and read up upon researching the Side load function. So I downloaded the ABT bundle zip folder and placed it in C folder, but that's where i'm stuck. I've tried looking a few things up but every time i try to run Adb command in the platforms folder it just opens and closes within a second. not sure what i'm missing. i've tried looking at other ways but most other phones have the capability of just throwing it on to the SD card which helps other people. thanks in advance.
Tl:dr Need to get a rom file onto the Nexus, to install and repair my corrupted rom.
you run adb from COMMANDLINE, it sounds like you are trying to double click the adb.exe....that will never work. adb is a commandline tool
ok, i'm pretty much a noob, don't know how to do that but i'll google it first before i bug any more. thanks again.
Since you are using windows, while looking at the explorer window that contains the adb/fastboot exes, hold down shift and right click somewhere in the blank space within the folder...OPEN COMMAND WINDOW HERE
once you have a DOS prompt open in that location, type 'adb devices' without any quotes to see if your device is being recognized.
there is an entire thread dedicated to walking you through this whole process.
start reading here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812959
this site contains all the info you need.
I googled it and got it set up and working. it does recognize my device. now i'm reading up on the command to send the zip file. seriously, thanks for the feedback. been sitting here for like 2 hours trying to figure this out without pulling out my hair and tossing the phone lol.
You could have just read the stickies... Why people don't get curious about things like "RETURN TO STOCK ON ANY GALAXY NEXUS VARIANT" or "ANDROID 101", I'll never understand.
