[Q] Stock-ish Rom - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I am looking to maximize my Epic Touch...I am rooted..and would like a rom that would allow 5 icons in the dock while sticking with TW launcher...also would like to speed up if possible...not sure what I am looking for. Would just love to get the most out of root access..any help would be great!

Look in theme section for tw 4.5 that is only tw that allows 5 in dock

k...def will check that out...what I am really looking for is the TW 4.5 with CRT animations, No-Ciq..which I may already have..not sure! and anything else thats cool!

just run the touchwiz launcher over any of the roms in the development section.
i personally like starburst but viper's is very good also.
that way you get all the goodies without having to add each individual component manually. just read the orig posts for each rom check out thier features and follow the instructions very easy.
then you can even throw a theme on top to change the look to your liking just make sure it's compatible with your rom.

Thank You!! I have rooted my phones before...but I still feel very insecure when it comes to some of this stuff. Not sure exactly what to do when it comes to adding themes and where I would get the tw launcher to put back on or if it would still be on!!
Thats exactly what I want tho..is all the goodies!!

both the roms and themes are easily installable
mostly it's a matter of booting into recovery (volume up + power)
and clicking install zip from sd card.
if you use your phone to download the file you don't even need a computer for the process.
as for touchwiz backing it up can be done a couple ways
any of these would work
1> before you delete it just make a backup in recovery
2> copy the file somewhere safe using a file explorer (i use es file explorer from market is free and allows root access)
3>just re-install the rom you downloaded it'll come with the launcher.
4>the orig touchwiz is posted on the forums and could be installed the same way.
most everything you could hope for comes with a decent set of instructions just follow them and you'll have no problems

no problem. some of this could be a little confusing at first glance but it's actually quite simple once you get used to it.

Simplest way to remove unwanted system apps?

I want to keep the stock HTC factory ROM on the phone now. I want to remove some of the system apps that come preinstalled, that's all. Facebook, for example. What's the simplest way to do this?
Also, I want the OTA update to 2.2 when it comes, and I don't care if I lose root, so long as I can cherry-pick what programs are on my phone.
And I want a pony, too.
Seriously, isn't there an easy method to just kill a few apps that is noob-friendly?
Download estrongs file explorer, go into settings/root options/Select hiapk or cyanogenmod (whichever works, you will also be prompted to grant su permissions)/then mount.
Now you navigate to system/app and delete at will.

Didn't work. Looks like root is required, plus a custom ROM flashed. Far too many steps to simply delete a preloaded system app. I'm running the stock HTC ROM. I suppose I can run Unrevoked3 to get root, but I have no interest in a custom ROM. I simply want the stock ROM with fewer apps. Thanks anyways...

That doesn't work on the stock ROM
I would also like to remove some apps. I want to keep the stock ROM for now (tried some 2.2 and did not like them... I'll just wait for OTA) and I'm root. What are the posibilities?
Unrevoked only gives you root, you don't have to install a custom ROM. You could just root, keep the stock ROM and just delete whatever you want. Don't see much point in that though. I also hate FB, stock and all the rest but as long as you don't use them / sign in they don't do anything and the free space you gain will be useless.
Simply there is no way to remove system apps without root..
With root you can only do it in recovery by issuing adb commands or by simply deleting .apk files from a custom rom before you flash it.
edit: and i agree with pascanu no need, and you might just screw something up
So basically I have to get root access using something like Unrevoked3, then type in some commands (adb) in my computer, with the phone hooked up via USB, and delete the apps that way?
I can refer to one of the threads explaining how to use ADB, but a quick search tells me that I need to download & install the SDK to use it. Already we are getting way too complicated. Each solution I see involves downloading large files and installing software.
If this is the only way currently, than I can accept that. I have rooted phones and flashed ROMs before, and I am confident I could figure it out again if needed. I just don't want to bother now. I like the stock ROM from HTC on my Desire. All I want is control over exactly which apps live on my phone, just like I control which programs are on my PC. Imagine if you couldn't remove some toolbar or AOL from a new PC when you bought it? Scary, huh? That's where a lot of us are now.
Until it's easy and quick, I and the majority of users just won't bother. I'm still hoping it's possible, and if anyone can explain how to do it then please do.
Yes as i wrote there is no need for that, if you are going to root it should be because you want some of all the good stuff it comes with (wireless tether, a2sd, froyo, decent backup, custom theming etc.)
It is quite easy though.
I may know where you can get a pony..........

[Q] NEED HELP installing apks onto rooted slide???

Hey I'm currently running the CyanogenMod-6.0.0-Slide-RC1 on my mytouch slide and was making attempts trying to install some stock apk files. From another thread (which I shall not mention just so the thread stays open) I was able to download the stock apk/odex files for the faves and friends widgets and the mt3gs swype (in my opinion the best working/looking version of swype out there that I've tried at least...).
The apk/odex files are saved onto my sdcard, in my downloads folder. I'm not sure if I'd actually need to rewrite some code or something to get the stock stuff to run on CM6. Any light anyone could shed on the subject for me would be GREATLY appreciated!
First, most of the HTC widgets will only run on a rom with sense, which CM6 is not. Second, I don't believe CM6 is an odexed rom (I haven't used it, so someone correct me if i'm wrong), so you can not use the apk/odex files from the stock build. Third, this post would be for Q&A not development.

Okay, well as you can tell, I'm obviously a noob when it comes to programming as well as this forum..so thanks for the heads up.
And thanks for the info about HTC widgets only running on sense, that really helped out a bunch.
If you want to add or remove system apps try this:
1 Get 7zip
2 open CM6 with 7zip
3 Navigate to /system/app folder with 7zip
4 Add or remove apk's you want, thats it you are done
Odex files are not required for 90% of apps in CM6
Hope this helps,i have made a barebones(minimal) rom-its posted on here, all you need to do is add your own apk's to it.Or just make your own rom,but adding google apps to a rom requires adding few more files to /lib and /xlib folders,if you new to android try my barebones rom it will save you few headaches adding google apps.

BLEH.
I had trouble running the command line .zip version of 7-zip. I've extracted the files from the zip and try to run the program but it open and closes right back up. I've tried reinstalling and what not but it still doesn't work...I'm running Vista 32 bit if that helps at all.
Thanks again!
Oh, and here's the link to the stock stuff for the MT3GS, enjoy! (I do not take credit for any of the work put into the linked thread, I'm just passing along some great stuff!!!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729529&highlight=stock+apk
EDIT: I'm dumb and figured out how to use the 7-zip program. Super stoked...I hope my mods work.
Bleh, I tried putting the stock myfaves, friends, and skype .apk and .odex files into the apps folder and made my own custom rom...installed everything fine and then I looked through my apps and widgets to see if I could use it aaaaaand. They're nowhere to be found. Great. =/
So again i'm stuck without the slightest idea what to do next. Thanks in advance for the help!

Need some help with installing theme and lockscreen

I have managed to finally root my evo 2.2 with unrevoked3 and i am a noob i was into apple, i knew a lot about jailbreaking etc. but android is much better.(my opinion) i am trying to install MattedBlues-V1_3-CM6.0.0-Sept12 and i really want to have the normal android lock "Flan" but i cant seem to find it. I have tried Lockbot but i didnt like it at all because i have the overclocked widget and it lags for lockbot. i want to see what the message says if i get on at the lockscreen or a missed call etc.. i know i will be getting a lot of criticism because i do admit i am a noob to android world. i am learning. so i give myself credit for that.
please any help/directions would be really helpful
thank you xda forums
your friend,

First. to use a theme you flash it jsut like a rom (except you dont need to preform a wipe for most themes). you jsut place it on your sd card go to recovery and flash.
for the vanilla lock bar. The easiest way i have found is to use root explorer or titanium back up or even adb to remove htcLockScreen.apk from your system folder. then reboot the phone. as a warning if you use alarms you will run into problems using the HTCWorldCLock.
hope that helps some

Kindle Fire launcher files

Ok this is the Apk from the stock kindle firmware
If you get the files you need, how long would it take a certified hacker such as yourself to complete such a port?
probably going to need a lot more then just the apk. could probably just download one of the stock Roms on the forums and extract the zip to get all the files you may need. It would be nice to port over a few more stock apps into other Android versions. I personally have spent more than a few hours trying to get the stock email and contacts app working on CM7 and is not as easy as I thought it would be. I also suck so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
The APKs are encrypted. You cannot just go into it, pull out code, and easily port it over unless you decompile them first.
It's just garbled junk when you extract it.
The OP has no idea how to do this, and it's already something someone else is currently trying to do and even they're having a few issues since it's pretty much just images and fancy shader plugins that make up the entire thing. Not even the bookshelves themselves are images either.

question?
How am I able to extract Roms and then push files from the extracted Rom to my device? Just curious as I do this all the time. Nothing major, did this with things like the bootanimation.zip from cm9 and a few apks from zips of Roms for my phone. Most would not install if I just put on sd partition and hit install but for example I am writing this on the stock keyboard I took from the prerooted stock 6.2.2 Roms zip. Extracted the zip to my desktop, used that qadb thing floating around to overwrite the file with the same name in CM7 on my Kindle and was able to use the keyboard after rebooting. Like I said just curious, do understand it's not always as easy as putting an apk in a directory and rebooting but I use files from extracted Roms all the time.

This is an educated guess, but I think it has to do a lot with whether or not an app is tied to the framework, or to the specific device ID.
Its not that hard i downloaded the email client from the kindle fire on my xperia play all what i did was go into root explorer and make a copy of the apks on my sd card

Remove Bloatware from T-Mobile Note 2

I searched many various sites including this one to try and find the best and safest way to uninstall bloatware. I tried Titanium Pro and when I tried to Backup/Restore and selected an app to delete it then rebooted my Note 2. I looked back into B/R and found the item was still there. There was a message indicating that it may take 2 or 3 reboots to complete the uninstall.
I am looking for an app that will run and unistall all bloatware that is safe to use or gives you the option to select apps to unistall. I did download one which looked very good and even listed the apps it would uninstall. It was SuperNote2 DeBloatware which was a zip file. It would not unzip and I could not get it to unzip after numerous downloads.
Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I did find that posting yesterday and downloaded mrRobinson_Note_II_De_Bloater.v1.00.zip to my PC. When I unzipped this file I saw folders:
apps
assets
meta-inf
These folders dated back to 2/28/2008. So, I was very unsure to use this.
When I opened:
apps it contained: GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
Assets contained; common, fonts, icons, langs and themes.
Meta-inf contained: Com, Cert, Cert and manifest.
This just did not look right for what this was suppose to do. So, I left it.
Your opinion?

You are using a custom recovery, aren't you? CWM or TWRP ... Just follow the instructions in the 1st post. Boot into recovery and select that file and click custom and either run the program or just look through the files that you can remove and exit if you don't want to use the program.
Or, you could just install a custom ROM and not have to worry about this?

That thread is quite old and if you noticed, somewhat inactive with some issues reported. I always use Titanium Backup to "freeze" apps - this usually removes them from being active (and thus saving CPU and battery) but they still remain should you want them. It's a simple and painless process as you are not really deleting them and they do not use much memory anyway.
Here's a great list for the Samsung Galaxy line of devices from Android Forums: http://androidforums.com/metropcs-cdma-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/695070-safe-apps-remove.html

I honestly suggest using a custom rom instead... there are lists out there of apps to remove but it is more based on whats safe to remove vs not safe... ultimately its all user dependant (ie what apps do you use vs what someone else uses)... for me, I love to just install either CM (as reliable and "bare" as any of the roms come) or Jedi roms via aroma (if you still want to hang on to the TouchWiz side of things)... Aroma installs allow you to choose the bloatware you want to have and disregard the ones you dont want... there are tons of tutorials online that take you step by step... make sure you follow the directions (completely) and happy flashing!!

Dont know if you are still in need of help trying to figure out how to flash roms but, you would first need to install a custom recovery. The two major recoveries are TWRP and CWM. They're on par. I used CWM for years but switched to TWRP. From there you first want to make a backup of your original rom and flash as many roms you want to try out. If you dont like the rom, just restore. I dont know how familiar you are with flashing roms but it takes like one try and you pretty much do the same thing over and over.

MTP USB Device?
I thought I was doing great after uninstalling bloatware. However, when I tried to connect my Note 2 to my PC via USB I received the error that MTP USB Device driver could not be loaded. Apparently I must have uninstalled something on my Note 2 that is not allowing me to connect to the PC via USB. I have been searching all day, downloading various Driver apps to no avail. I even downloaded and installed Samsung Drivers which also did not work.
It never ends. Fix one thing and then another pops up. LOL
What else can I say except - H-E-L-P.
I still can use my USB plug from NOTE 2 to my Flash Drive to get stuff transfered to/from Note2/PC.

ps this is why its so important to make a backup in twrp or cwm....google it or find it here! they also call it a nandroid backup...VERY IMPORTANT for issues like this. As previsouly stated you should be able to put the stock rom (check out sammobile's web page for official f.w) on the sd card and from there you can boot into recovery mode and install it from there. I believe. If that don't work look into mobile odin which I have never used. sorry for he typos lazy!
