[Q] Simple overclock question - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so my phone is rooted but I understand that I will have to flash a custom kernel in order to clock it any higher than 1ghz? is this correct? I just wanted to verify so I dont end up being stupid and risk bricking my phone.
Thanks

Yep your right, you can only underclock with stock kernel, you will need a custom one to overclock

Yes. You need to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom kernel in order to be able to overclock the phone.

Cool thanks for the confirmation guys.

[Q] Unrooted Overclocked Kernel for Stock 4.0.2.A.0.42

Anyone working on or have a 4.0.2.A.0.42 Kernel that is overclocked and unrooted? I used if2's when I was on 3.0.1.A.0.145 and it worked great. I can't root due to my work email, and my own personal ethics about violating company policies but wanted to enjoy the benefits of overclocking to 1.2Ghz or 1.5Ghz w/o root or using a governor app like setcpu.
Bone stock is just to laggy for me coming from an Atrix. Just updated my LT15a today. Most of the changes are welcome (disable facebook integration), but now I'm stock at stock speed w/o root...for now.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
In case you can't tell, I'm still a n00b. I got the processes figured out for applying mods, just have no clue how to take the dev into my own hands.
Thanks in advance!
As far as i know you need to have root to change your cpu freq... they modify the system files to se the freqs. which need root..
Please give a link to the other ROM that you were using..
And DooMLord's kernel works with 4.0.2.A.0.42 it says..
Or overclock but worry about rooting?
Good one
Just install Doomkernel, it will give you root but you'll need it anyway to overlock with SetCPU.

Before updating I was overclocked without root by flashing the 1.55Ghz kernel here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165355
Which I'm pretty sure you can do by just unlocking your bootloader. Think about it, people flash roms w/kernals all the time then root afterward. I just flashed the boot.img and everything woked beautifully.... aside from a few touch screen glitches which I have seen many times with overclocked devices.
I was skeptical, but it worked. SetCPU showed the CPU speed at 1.55Ghz but did not have root access. I even verified by installing superuser but it did not have root access and could not update the su binary either.
So, there you have it. I will probably do some research and try to tweek the stock kernal myself since doom installs su and also needs a gov app to boost the speed.

I take it you dont need an unlocked bootloader?

My bootloader is unlocked. I think that is a prerequisite to flashing ROMs or Kernels.

Returning your handset back to stock. Telus T989D

Hi
I know this question has been asked before but i havent received a definite answer as yet and i would like to be cautious. I am planning to root my phone but i wiuld like to be able to revert back to stock if needed. I have an idea on the procedure of Unrooting from the guides. My only problem i am having trouble understanding is after i flash the stock rom back, i would also have to flash the stock kernel. The problem is the link i found that has the stock kernel is dead. Would i be able to back up my stock kernel before flashing a new rom and kernel?
Last question is are modified kernels functional with stock rom? For example i am thinking of first trying out synergy kernel. Would i experience any performance changes with just the kernel?
Thanks for the help

I can tell you from personal experience with having to return one s2 x to Telus that there is no issue with reverting back to stock. just do a nandroid backup before flashing your ROM and kernel then you just need to find a stock recovery to flash. I can find mine that I used if you need it.
as far as kernel improvements go, I am really enjoying the ability to overclock. I get about 26 hours of moderate to heavy use using profiles with setcpu. Also bln is handy.
Since you are T989D I would recommend synergy kernel with Mr. X Telus ROM. That's what I an using and am loving it. it is very stable. I haven't even had one random reboot yet!

Thanks for the reply JROCxvl. I was planning on using the synergy kernel, was just worried about flashing back with a stock kernel as I was not sure if nandroid backup backs up your kernel as well. I thought I read it does not. I also wanted to ask about BLN. Using the synergy kernel with stock telus rom would work with BLN?
I can't believe your usage hours. Crazy. Does setcpu basically underclock your cpu when your phone is idle? And you can use setcpu with just a kernel change? I would not need to install a rom as well?
Thanks again for the help man.

Custom Kernel and Unrooted Stock

Hello. I've tried to find this answer through searching but have had not much luck. I was wondering if its possible to use a custom kernel with an unrooted stock from. I would like to increase battery life but my company uses Good for Enterprise which cannot function on a rooted device. Any help here would be much appreciated.

As far as i know you have to root your phone to install a custom kernel. So you might want to look into getting an extended battery.
I believe that you could. You wouldn't be able to change any of the kernel setting tho unless maybe you could make flashable zips to change them.

A kernel comes way before any user installed app. You can indeed install a custom kernel without root, either by fastboot or cwm. Keep in mind you dont even need to flash cwm permanently, just temporarly to flash kernel zip.

[Q] Is overclocking possible on rooted stock?

I was wondering if the SGH-T999 was able to achieve overclocking - I looked around the forums and found no information about it, so I decided to ask...I know some ROMs have it, but I'd like to stay on insecure rom for the time being.
So the question is: Can I overclock my Galaxy III without flashing a custom rom, using only the insecure rom flashed by the QCom Toolkit? and If so, how?
Download set cpu and find out. Only custkm kernels can over clock and even those dont all the time.

I'm on Custom stock - I don't know the specific name for it, since I flashed it using the QCom Toolkit (the file is called "boot-insecure-tmo-t999uvalem-cwm")...but I know it works since it installed superuser.
That just gave you cwm recovery, root, and you are now able to flash custom ROMs and kernels. So the answer is no you will need to flash a kernel that is able to be over clocked and works with stock
This might work just read the forum

I flashed the Trinity Kernel, and am so far very pleased with it. Sure, it only goes up to 1.75 Ghz, but that's enough for now. Should I feel like going higher, then I might look into Adama, specially since the creator himself warns that it's a bit risky.

[Q] Going back to stock kernel

Noob question, since I have not been really into custom kernels and now planning to give it a try.
After flashing and using a custom kernel, is there a way to get back to stock kernel? How?
Are there special precautions when going back to stock? Like things that can brick my phone since it's already BL unlocked?
Also, can I extract my phone's current stock kernel? (So I can play with the splash screen. )
Just use flashtool to flash back stock ftf...

I thought so. Thanks for the reply, good sir!
