Unlocked bootloader for cyanogenmod - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi , im looking to unlock my bootloader as i want to install the cyanogenmod for my play .
But i was wondering that once i do this would it be easy to install ice cream sandwich when it gets released and would all original sony ericsson apps work fine ?
Any info on this would be much appriciated
thanks

If you use the official bootloader unlock method, you will loose the ability to OTA update or update using SEUS. You will also loose the ability to use any apps that require sony's DRM certificates. At the moment that is Track ID, The like button in the stock music app, and music and video unlimited.
If you use the paid testpoint method, you will keep all the above things

If i cant use OTA update or update using SEUS how would i do the update ?
Thanks for the info

You can use flashtool to update, most firmware updates end up in the dev section either just before or just after they are released, with an unlocked bootloader, you can also flash a system.img from fastboot

Excellent thanks

[Q] Software update from 2.3.2

Hi there,
have docomo's japanese Xperia Arc and get a notification that a software update is available. I can download it fine and it tries to install, but then always says failed.
I rooted the phone with Gingerbreak, could that be the reason?
Will it work if I try with SEUS instead of over the air?
Thanks
It is unrelated to "root".
Yes, use SEUS instead.

Thanks for the reply and that link. Looks like a good update. Will need to install windows on a virtual machine unfortunately to use SEUS.
@vladuz976, after rooting, did you remove some of the bloatware? If so, OTA update will not work for you and you'll have to use SEUS. Else you'll have to flash 2.3.2 again with FlashTool and then update OTA (if your bootloader is locked).
Yeah deleted bloatware. That explains it. Thanks

Cannot update phone software

My phone keeps nagging me saying there is an update available, I had previously unlocked my bootloader to get root and relocked it with Blagus's method, I try and preform the official update to no avail, the update takes place phone reboots and when it turns back on it says "Could not update software" I am also having a hard time doing so on my PC with the companion software, It will not detect my phone in media transfer mode.
Sorry for the block of text but this is annoying me, I want the new update
Thanks in advance
Have you deleted/frozen anything or installed the leaked home.apk/market.apk?
Try to unmount your sdcard before connecting it, i've read someone had success that way to get it to connect/find device.
Regards Dousan...
Yes, I have removed a fair amount of crap as well as installed the new market and leaked launcher.
If I unlock my Bootloader again, flash a 3.0.1.A.0.145 version to get all the crap back and then use SEUS to bring it to the new update?

No need for unlocking your bootloader as you can just flash the FW you stated with flashtool and then root with gingerbreak and then without doing anything else update OTA to newest. Only OTA will preserve root
Or you can unlock your BL and flash FW 4.0.A.2.368 posted by @thomassafca with flashtool and then flash doomlords kernel v3 for the same FW virsion as above, with fastboot. It comes prerooted and with su/superuser/busybox installed and then flash kernel.sin with flashtool (SE stock kernel) and relock your BL if you wish.
Regards Dousan...
e: The removed crap is the reason why you can't update
You rule, Thanks for the info. I think i'll go down the flashing the update and kernel route.

[Q] How to update software ???

Hello!
I need to know all the official possible ways available to update the software of my PLAY. Also do mention the best method.
Right now when I go to settings>About Phone> it says that I have the Android version of 2.3.3
I believe there have been 2 software updates since then (correct me if I am wrong).
What do you people think was there any progress in the updates or were they just related to back-end programming?
Thanks.
2.3.4 has been rolling out to some android devices. It takes time for all the different mobile operators to get it out. Im on uk vodaphone and still waiting, ive read it should be available for me during october, so it really depends on your location and operator as to when you will get it....
You can check for software updates by going to settings, about phone, software updates and click the menu button to refresh the search for available updates.
Im awaiting 2.3.4 as i hope it improves my wifi :-(

There are three ways to update.
1. Over-The-Air - the easiest and safest way. Keep root.
2. PC Companion - easy but requires computer. Phone installs software to computer using USB. Lose root.
3. SE Update - not sure about this one. Must go through Sony Ericsson website. Lose root.
DO NOT UPDATE AT ALL IF YOUR BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED
There are 2 new firmwares (for different regions) but only one update ->
2.3.4.
720p video recording
More facebook integration
Disable auto-brightness option
There is more but minor fixes

[Q] if the device is rooted, can we update our phone from Sony official Site

Hi,
I am using Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S with Android 4.0.3 and my device is rooted and I have installed CWM.
Now I got an update (4.0.4) to my phone.
I am just wondering if I would be able to update my phone even though its rooted!!
Also, I would like to know that currently i have some mods like systemUI.apk and some other changes.
If I am able to update my phone, will these be replaced and get a default one as per the update of 4.0.4 or will my current mods be retained.
Kindly need your advice
Thanks
If it's only rooted then yes. If your bootloader's unlocked then no. And it will be a new install so you'll lose any mods(including root).
You can update. You will lose root and all the modifications that you made thus far.
yes you can
but if you has unlock your phone and you update it from pcc or seus it will brick

LT18a - Upgrade Options - Bootloader locked

Hi all,
I own an LT18a which appears to be an LT18i equivalent? It's an Xperia Arc S, Central American GSM version.
It is SIM unlocked however it's made after 12W11 so I cannot unlock the bootloader. In the root status it says Bootloader Unlock is not allowed.
It is trapped on Android 2.3.4 which is horrible. No OTA available.
I am wondering what my options are, I have searched but seem to hit dead ends. Is there any alternate way to unlock the bootloader, I tried a few paid services but they said after 12W11 there is no support.
Can I install leaked 4.1 official firmwares like the UK one posted here via flash tool or can I not install anything except what is OTA (nothing at the moment).
Thanks in Advance
You can install via flashtool a ftf file
Also sony have given us a update to ICS 4.0.4
U may get it from PC companion Or a ftf file
I dont think there is a leaked 4.1 update
U may also root ur phone and then install Custom GB roms for locked bootloaders

You can update to Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0.4, via PC Companion.
At the moment, there is no way for you to unlock the bootloader.
There are no 4.1 official firmwares for our phones, only the ones is xda-developers.
Thanks and thanks! 4.0.4 beats 2.3.4. I will upgrade, thanks everyone!
ICS 4.0.4 might be newer but I'd say that 2.3.4/2.3.7 GB is running much smoother on our devices, so I would not upgrade your phone, but it is your choice
