Hey Guys. Has anyone had the GPS problem on stock setup or after root and flash? I have to reboot every time in order for it to pick up the satellites. i have been using a gps check program from the market to check the status. It will only see 1 sat when the phone has been running for awhile, it won't connect at all outside with clear skys. I read some people having the issue on the sprint site but, not much about it here. Anyone?!?
Did you try Sprint Navigation? That normally gets a gps log on right away. Google isn't working proper on any phone i used. Gladfully we on sprint have free Sprint navigation from telenav whatever beats Google nav anyway. Try it you probably get a log on to gps right away.

Download GPS Test from the android market. Then go into setting and clear the agps and it should lock in within seconds. That's what I did. I only had to do it once and my gps has been fine after that. It locks in within 10 seconds.
I had the same exact issue
To be specific I had my phone bearly 2 weeks, One day while just sitting on the counter with the screen off in what should have been idle state my phone was so hot I could bearly pick the thing up the digitizer or non of the buttons on the screen would function and it was super slow.
I had to pull the battery out to reset the phone the battery history showed it drained a near 90% + charge in under 2hrs.. to say the least I had a couple LOS after reboot everything was FOTB.
Since then my GPS worked for crap it was inermident it seemed the cooler the phone the better it did work but after a certain warm temp it would fail and anywhere around warm or less it would work intermidently at best..
Long story short after talking to someone for several houres he decided it haves a hardware issue after going to a sprint store and pulling teeth they finaly order me a replacement..
After investigating here is what I personaly found out.. The GPS is intergrated into the cpu, i dont know if it is on the T-mobile version with the snapdragon DC CPU, but what I think actually happined is my CPU overheated to the point of desoldering or lifting the chip or causing the internal GPS portion of the CPU to fail or degrade. I am asuming maybe a LOS crashed my phone to the point of causing this failure as of now I have a new phone and it did resolve the issue.
I had the most difficulty with trying to prove to the store that the GPS was bad because the store employees would try and argue that A-Tower triangulation acurate to 3000meters is good enough then after training sprint employees and technicians the difference between A-Tower & GPS I was finally able to get a replacement phone.
I've had this issue happen to me twice on the stock ROM. Google navigation could not get gps lock for several minutes in clear view of the sky. I rebooted the phone, and navigation then got an almost instant lock after going back in. I don't have another gps monitoring app, so I don't know if my phone was having an issue, or nav. I periodically had similar issues on my Droid 1, so it may not be unique to this phone.
Well like discussed in a other tread sprint navigation has no issues to log on to gps. Google nav has issues. It is almost with all Android phones that Google nav has issues to log on to gps. Sprint nav logs on basically instantly.

Google maps locked up on 10 of 11 sats in less than 5 seconds the first time I tried it this morning. I've seen better accuracy (mine varied between 12-18 ft) SN ratio was great all 10 were over 20). I've had my phone since Saturday and GPS test found and used 5 sats in my basement (first time I've ever seen that) turned on my wife's epic and got the same thing.
This is what I get but I don't know if it's good. I can never get shopkick points. I love show kick.

I've been having this issue more and more lately.
Its the same thing every time, after the phone has been up and running for days on end, the GPS will not work at all.
Reboot and its 100% fine and super fast lock & accuracy.
But its now to the point that I just reboot my phone daily just to avoid running into this.
Doesnt help that I dont even have 3g in phoenix, curious if its part of the problem.
I had a lot of problems. Bottom line is that I think some phones may have borked gps chips. After going to thru tech support online, on the phone , and finally taking the phone in, they replaced it and the new ones works great.
Hey guys, just wanted to share my findings with the GPS problem a lot of people seem to have, including me. I was having issue's connecting my GPS all the time, it would not locate the satellites unless I hard reset the phone until I found this software in the market.
It's called. GPS FIX - just search, GPS FIX - simple enough...right?
I tried using the other GPS program everyone talked about, and clearing the whatever but it never really seemed to work. This program however works FLAWLESS! You start your GPS, launch this program, it finds everything, then you launch your Nav software or whatever and it pops up instantly.
Hope this helps...
*side note - my friend has a HD2 and his has the same issue, and also another phone he uses as well. So the GPS issue seems to be something a lot of phones experience, makes me feel better it's not just isolated to this device.
I'm currently running the Starburst rom and using GPS on the road heading to South Carolina. The gps and navigation has been working perfect and accurately

It was worse on the galaxy s, the culprit was the spring arm that makes contract with the GPS antenna on the back case. The arm would lose tension and it would then loose contract. I had my first issue with GPS this morning, wouldn't lock. Haven't tried it since my drive to work

All I know is I run this software and mine works great. Without it I have to reboot to get it to work.

Just enter ##gpsclrx# into your dialer then enter your msl code. Let it do its thing then reboot your phone. You should have much better GPS locks afterwards

Sorry for the late response. It clears the GPS data on the phone, and forces it to resync. This has in the past on several devices resolved GPS locking issues.
Cool thanks!

Hello,
My Defy is rebooting randomly, and I'm looking for a way to know why it reboots.
I'd like to have something monitoring the reboot events, in order to tell me why it reboots exactly, which service or application is causing the reboot.
Is it possible ?
thanks.
mine reboots randomly too, but even worse is that sometimes I get "only emergency calls" and keeps that way until I turn fly mode on&off. It's very annoying because i need to keep an eye on it.
I hadn't flashed mine, maybe these issues get solve if i use another ROM?
No rom solves it. Its to do with signnal strength and 3G. You will find two more threads in same section. But no one wants to help.

Try another SIM card? I read that some SIM Defy give problems and restarts ...
i've only tried a SIM but it's new.
It seems to be a software problem, because it happens randomly and recovers signal every time i switch flight mode on and off...
It has to do with signal strength and 3G. I would suggest that is there is one particular area it does it in, note that area and contact TMobile. They have solved my issues every time I have called into them about it. I suspect part of the issue has to do with the tower.

Have read other threads on this saying same. In the US, T-Mo seems pretty good at responding to these calls.
I'm in France, so T-Mobile should provide me with no help.
However, I will give a try with a new SIM card.
The problem is when you walk into elevator or some cabin. No signal initiates reboot then and tmob cant help in such cases. Is there a developer who can help me with fine tuning one already existing app?. Its called Shutupbattery saver. It switches Off data when signal is low but it needs more modification to make it work. I am ready to pay if someone can help. This tool will also be useful to everyone to save a lot of battery in low signal areas.

Are you running wifi at the same time? I've noticed this exaggerates the problem even more. The other thing I noticed is if you phone is overclocked, put it back to stock and see if it still happens. That was one of the observations I made with both of mine.
With or without WiFi makes no difference. The phone is using official "Orange FR" 2.51.1 ROM, no root, no overclock (even no app), and it may work perfectly for several days and then start to reboot.
It rebooted during the week end. On monday I managed to stop it after several factory reset and wipe of cache. It worked on monday afternoon and tuesday ; and on wednesday morning, during the breakfast the phone restarted one time. Afterward, in the morning several reboots occured, I tried to factory reset the phone two times. The first one with no success (using the bootloader's recovery), the second one by using the "confidentiality" menu of the phone, and it stopped the reboots.
The phone have been working since 10 am and the last reset, and no reboot occured. I installed no app after this reset, I only replaced the SIM by a new one this evening.
I will try the phone like this tomorrow, and on friday I will start to reinstall my applications, and test each one prior to install the next one.

All those observations I made was with stock rom and with no/less apps. I will wait for the Scratman to come back and report his findings. Hope the sim thing works. I am damn fed up of walking into no signal zone again.
If you know the phone is going to reboot, before it does hit *#*#4636#*#* on the dial pad and let us know what the phone is connected to, signal strength, etc. I know I could alwasy tell when mine was going to do it as the phone got real sluggish and it acted almost like a kernel panic. It was a very obvious behavior.
Signal strength with 3G below 102dbm is when it reboots.

OK i came across this wonderful app called Tasker. I tried doing some stuff but this app is realllllllly complex. Can any bright mind download the app here and make a sequence which says "low signal then switch off APN".
I made some but i am pretty sure I am wrong. Here is the code for the direct download. It is a trial and will expire in 9days.

I have the same problem with random reboots.
I sent it in to Motorola and got it back now with only the speaker exchanged (!?!).
Of course now I still have the problem. Upgraded then to Finland 2.2. with Pays Mod, but reboots still sometimes (once or twice a day).
Tried ShutupBatterySaver to turn of data connection when the signal is too low --> still reboots.
I think I can remember that once somebody in this forum posted a link from the Motorola support with a bugfix, but I can't find it anymore. Anyone here knows more?
Has anyone else tried replacing their SIM with a uicc SIM? Others on the non-us Moto forum are reporting SIM replacement as a cure -- but I recommend you get the latest uicc version.

I can't get this phone to tether for more than 2 minutes or so without it not working. The data will simply stop transmitting to the tethered device, while still working find on the phone.
An example is streaming Netflix while driving. I can do it on the phone just fine, but it freezes off and on before stopping altogether on my ASUS Transformer. If I am at home the tethering seems to continue working for hours.
The problem does not occur on the HTC Thunderbolt that my new GN is replacing. I assume this has to do with how the phone handles the transition between towers. There are lots of dead spots along the routes I drive, while delivering pizzas, but they are usually at intersections and are only an issue if I am stopped at the light for too long without sufficient buffer for the video I am streaming.
I have tried ARHD and RootzBoat. Used android-wifi-tether, the built in ICS tether, and the trial for the 10$ wifi hotspot app by SVTP(or something like that).
Please help me. This problem is so frustrating and unyielding I am ready to cry.
Well, if you are moving you will not get fast speeds nor a stable connection. When moving and requesting data you become lower priority on the tower/s not to mention youre just going to get **** for speed because of all the calculating and power necessart to get you that data. Voice is much higher priority and uses less bandwidth and power and will transition much better between towers. You should be driving anyways and not watching netflix. Worse than texting.

This is not true. LTE is designed specifically to work for high-speed travel without degrading throughput. And tower handoffs do not lower your service priority. Agree that if the OP is trying to watch movies while driving, he'll be in an accident in no time. REALLY really bad idea.
These conditions are were childs play for the HTC Thunderbolt. The issue I am speaking of is particular to the GN. That's why I am posting this.
For now I will put a hold on this question. The issue arose today on my home WiFi. As such I think the issue might actually lie in the ASUS Transformer Prime, as the issue isn't present in my ASUS Transformer nonprime. I'll report back within 24 hours when I have tested both devices concurrently.

Stay on point. I am not asking for your permission to use my devices how I see fit. I am pointing out an issue. I determined that the issue lies with the Transformer Prime, and not the Galaxy Nexus. So you can stop responding to this thread and stop preaching to me. I know what I can and can't do safely. I have no desire to get in a wreck, and as such I have never been in a wreck or anything close because of a phone or other gadget. I can also say that I never will be because I watch the road when my car is moving, simple as that.
So I made two very unprofessional videos that show the issue. It took longer than I wanted to completely kill the connections, but the evidence is there, the wifi becomes spotty and unusable after a while.
I also did a little bit of a side by side with the original transformer.

I am actually having the same issue except I am not driving anywhere, the phone stays in one place. I used my Thunderbolt to tether to my ipad2 to stream tv shows while at the gym doing cardio. Unless the 4G signal sucked on the Thunderbolt, it would be able to stream a 350 meg show over Airvideo on the ipad2 no problem. I just switched over to the Nexus, rooted and romed with AOKP build 21 (kernel that came with it) and using the built in wifi tether app as well as a 3rd party installation of Wifi Tether yields the same result... the data will just stop transmitting randomly but still work fine on the phone. First time it stopped after about 200megs transmitted.. then 80, then 38.... without any reason. Signal was fine. Only way to temporarily fix it is to turn off the hotspot and then back on. But then it arbitrarily cuts out again.
Could it be the kernel? Or just something different about how the Nexus treats constant transmission that sucks compared to the older LTE phones? Please someone help!! this is the #1 reason I root!! I like to stream video onto the ipad2 almost daily....

i've posted this issue in another thread. there seems to be quite a few ppl with this problem. tether is active, device connected to genx is showing full signal, yet after a few minutes internet connection is lost while tethering is still active. What I have found works for me is setting the tether network to OPEN. internet connection stays on.
btw. i have i had the issue since aokp 14 till now Milestone 3, all running Franco's kernels and i have also tried a few other kernels. problem started when i started running aosp 4.3 base roms i believe. for now an open network will have to suffice when I need to tether. gl.

Thanks for the tip but that isn't working for me unfortunately... tried a number of different things this morning but still the same random disconnection while tether is on... :-(
Tried turning off bluetooth... changing the LAN settings from 192.x.x.x to 10.x.x.x... force wifi driver reload.... routing fix on/off... goddamnit. I used tether almost every day almost flawlessly with my Thunderbolt.
I seem to have the issue with bluetooth tethering. The first time I tried it it seemed to work just fine, streaming a podcast for over an hour straight.
But I just tried it now to my MacBook Pro and it disconnects in about ~2 minutes after starting over and over again. I'm using all the same settings that worked before and worked on my G2 as well.
Using WiFi tethering now and it seems to be working. I prefer bluetooth though when I just need to tether to one device. Does no one have a solution to this?
I'm on a GSM version stock 4.0.2.
On caulkins rom. Everything was fine, then in the last few days, Gps takes 30 seconds or more to lock. Sometimes not lock at all.
My phone did have a couple of minor drops, but nothing bad.
Any ideas?
Typical for a Samsung phone, you can download GPS status from the market and reset your GPS, sometimes that helps.
im running a stock one that i just got rom saturday and I have been seeing intermittent issues too... sometimes no lock on my 60 mile drive to work!!!!!
im gonna try gps status....
I just came back from a 9 hour road trip, clear skies, my phone would frequently loose the signal altogether or be off by a few hundred feet. Next time I'll just use my Garmin, or an HTC phone.

Now after Clearing it, do you lead GPS Status to Download the AGPS Data after? or After Clearing the GPS Cache, do you close GPS Status, then use Google Map?
I'd like to know
Thank you!
Strange, I've been using this phone for over a month now, and have never had a GPS issue. I use GPS quite often with google maps, google nav, or Waze, and the lock is almost instant. Hasn't ever lost GPS lock either. I'm on a stock rooted EL29 ROM, with EL29 modem and Rogue 1.4.0 Kernel/Recovery. Will not be going anywhere near the touch recovery mess. I'm in NYC, so often the tall buildings will interfere with the signal at ground level, but it's no more than a block off in those areas. But that's a common problem with GPS, and my old Evo had the same issues.

just got of the phone with sprint after 2 hours of troubleshooting. they made be restart me phone a million times din't work, they made me reactivate the phone didn't work, finally got transfered to someone with a bit of knowledge and its been working so far.
what they did with me on the was:
1. go to settings
2. system updates
3. update profile
4. restart
it hasn't gone to **** yet hope this works for the long run not for now.
Strange thing for me is that my first phone's gps was broken. They gave me the refurb I have now and it was just great. Locked in a few seconds and stayed locked.
Now for the last couple of weeks, it has just been terrible. doesn't lock for minutes at a time. GPS Test app shows pretty bad reception.
The problem is that it only seems to work, when I finally start driving towards the sprint store, to put in for a replacement.
I also went back to complete stock. el29

Interesting - what would be contained in a profile update that would be useful here though? Does a profile update simply reset your GPS in the same way that GP Test does?
i was on the phone yesterday with sprint for 2 hours and today went back to the same ****. called them again after 45 mins they decided to write an e ticket for the phone and went and got a new one. they are saying it's a bug in the white e4gt. don't now if it's happening to any one with black phones.

I had issues with my phone not using 4G(speeds were under 30kb). Only way to test out new rom is to drive to an area that has 4g about 2 hours away. I go there about once a month, but to test it out is a pain. To top it off my GPS rarely works. Tried ALL ICS modems.
I gave up and updated through sprint and long story short am now on FI27 rooted. FI27 stock without root caused nothing but problems. Gps wouldnt work, 4g wouldnt work, wifi wouldnt work, gave up and rooted it and flashed agats kernel.
Now my google maps shows my location but does not lock. Gps status app does not pick up ANY satellites either. 4g is unknown as I wont be in 4g area until Thursday.
I'm so lost with this phone, it's problem after problem. It's my 4th android phone and only one to cause so many problems. It's making me flip out.
Any help, of course, appreciated.
Just flashed original FI27 kernel and still no go.

Sounds like you need to exchange it with sprint. Its probably hardware defects.

Have you tried using FK09? I've experienced higher 4G and 3G speeds, and I've had faster GPS detection times.
I sort of had the same issue. My gps one day decided not to lock any longer (after working great for awhile even indoors) , i was so frustrated i decided to open the phone up and have a look at the antenna. To my surprise the antenna is on the back cover of the phone. Here are the 3 things i did to make it work.
1.Odin back to el26, flashed FI27 modem drove around a bit to make sure i got a good lock, accuracy at 8 meters or less. Then i nandroid back to Paranoid rom.
2.Cleaned the connectors to the antenna with alcohol.
3.Unplugged the connector, don't know what that connector is for =] - i just wanted a way to reset the hardware.
As you can see there is no antenna to be found, there is a ribbon connector on the bottom right of the image (out of the shot - first picture) i disconnected that thinking that might reset the hardware.

Here is the antenna on the back of the phone when you unscrew it.
I was so fed up, that I just did all the 3 steps without checking the gps checking in between, in the end it worked. I would recommend odin back to el26 first getting a good lock and go from there.
Thanks for the replies. I odined using FI27 stock rom rooted clean install wiping everything. The gps works but I have to use all settings under "Location". Also, it only worked outside of my home and had to drive around for a few seconds to lock in some satellites.
Agats kernel wouldnt do it at all. Stock kernel works(not inside house though), but the location settings sound normal?
I'm tempted to go back to el26, but not sure. Im hoping it is just the new area I moved to (Poconos PA) because as soon as i drive a few seconds I get a lock. Right now back in home I dont even have 1 satellite being picked up.
Going to back to NY Wed/Thursday, how would I know if my 4g is borked or whatever before going out there since I wont have a computer to mess around with it?
Thinking of going to el26 and maybe just leaving it at that.
Not too good on opening phones. Scratched my xperia x10 to crap lol. Could of sold that for 80 bucks at a store but it has constant boot loops. tried a reflow hack on the board but failed
I don't have GPS aiding turned on in location, actually there isn't a setting for that in paranoid rom - but i do remember on ICS i wouldn't turn that on. How accurate is the lock using GPS Test or GPS status?
Its 4:55 am and im at dunkin donuts. Its at 4m accuracy with maps. Gps status reported 4 errors and 8 out of 12 satellites fixed. When i put phone out of window it goes to 9/11 and errors at 2. Inside car the numbers get worse but lock is there. Im hoping its just a ug.
I think ill bring my laptop this week when i go to ny and start flashing all roms and modems lol.
Do the gps numbers seem okay? If thats good then next thing would be to fix 4g. Gotta test gps without network and see if it locks.
Wish me luck lol
Edit, it all works now. Think I'm going to stay with rooted FI27 stock rom. Too many risks trying different roms out.
Thanks everyone.

How absolutely F**KING ANNOYING!!!
Here, in my area, I was told to reset the network every time I had an issue, the problem with that, is that I have to reestablish ALL of my network connections again (WiFi and BT mainly which is a PITA)... so... I used Airplane Mode on and then waited and then off and let it reconnect and this works about 60% of the time.
I want to try this to see if it helps, but holy hell why when you lose it after a reboot? I auto-reboot once a week and manually sometimes when I really can't get Data without restarting.
Painful.

Yes, you have to redo it after a reboot, but it doesn't take long to do, and I haven't tried it, but you might be able to just do the "apply" option since the asterisks are still there after the reboot. This should fix the problem you get for data, so you shouldn't have to reboot for that reason anymore.
ETA: I researched what the Block AP option was and that apparently will prevent you from having to redo this after reboot!

I did this based on a post on Samsung Members previously (you can see that screenshot in my post in the cell reception thread here), but I haven't seen the instructions with the Block AP option in it. What does that do, do you know?
I've seen instructions with both the SA and NSA versions of the 5G selections to choose, too.
ETA: Based on my research, the Block by AP option prevents you from having to redo this after rebooting the phone.
Thanks guys! I just did this and I guess we'll see over the next few days how this works.
Yeah, one day out and I am STILL having connection issues, even after applying these settings. I am going to head to a T-Mobile store later and throw this thing (well, something else) at them and tell them to figure it out.
Nah, the guys at the store are awesome, I'll see what they have to say.

Strange. What are your connection issues? Maybe it is something different than everyone else is having. I hope the store can help you, as I've never been to a T-mobile store and only have been in a Sprint store like three times (before online phone ordering) in the 21 years I've been using their service, so I don't know how much the store people know.
The problem is the mainboard itself, I got replacement from Samsung, which has perfect connection on Android 11, I updated to 12 without any issue. I tried to downgrade the old one back to 11 and the connection issue is still there.

This does not happen all the time, but it happens often enough to where I am worried about work (I am On-Call most of the time and need to be able to get calls).
I am on WiFi when home. Pretty normal.
I leave home and I MIGHT have data/voice
If I do not, I normally put my phone in Airplane Mode and then back out again and things are okay
If I am driving and move to a new tower, there is a 50/50 change I will need to airplane mode again to get voice/data
Resetting network connections (which is what T-Mo told me to do every time) works, but then you have to log back into WiFi and reconnect all your BT devices again, so this is definitely a NO-GO for me.
edit: Here are my settings using the instructions in the OP:
Just curious, but why do folks think this is a hardware issue ? Everyone's hardware failed after update ? I have the issue but following the procedure in the service menu seemed to take care of it for now at least .

Hmm, that is a strange issue! I haven't had problems when driving around locally or two hours away (prior to this temporary fix, but I've had the issue for a while, not just since 12 came out; I haven't driven far since applying the fix, but don't think I have had an issue with it - I did have an issue with WiFi tethering not connecting to my car stereo one day, but I don't know if that was after the fix or not).
ETA: I checked my Google Maps Timelime and that tethering issue happened before the fix.
We lost internet here at work the other day, turned on tethering on the device, laptop would connect but no internet.

Do you have tethering as part of your cell plan? If not, it might not allow you to use it even if you are willing to pay for it. Tethering works well on this phone for me, although T-mobile removed Bluetooth tethering as an option for some reason, so only WiFi tethering is an option. My plan comes with 60 GB of tethering, so no issues for me.
It's part of our family plan.
So, just an update here.
When I originally made the changes, somehow it reverted and the issue still persisted.
I have the changes applied now and have done a few reboots and the settings have stuck.
I have NOT had the issues I explained above since these settings have "stuck", so take that as you like, but as of now, I have not had connectivity issues and all seems to be working well.
I did those settings yesterday afternoon and made it worse..........wouldn't pick up 5g. Finally did a chat session with T-mobile and finally got 5g again.
I did notice earlier in the week that the device kept dropping calls left and right, not sure what was causing that.

Did T-mobile say anything about fixing these issues?
No.
So 3 weeks in after the update and still experiencing horrible data network issues. I drive a lot and this thing has become pretty much unusable on the road. Tmobile offered me to either receive a refurbished Fold 3 as a replacement or to switch to different phone altogether. As much as I love the Fold 3, I might not have any other choice. Have you guys replaced your Fold 3?

I don't have the money to switch to a different phone even if I wanted to, but I love this phone. I just hope they fix it so it can roam. I have the temporary fix on it and that makes it work, but roaming will be helpful for longer driving distances, especially since I tether my Android car stereo to my phone for Google Maps while driving and other apps while sitting in a parking lot etc.
Does the temporary fix not work for you?
