SO I've been trying to install the 3.0 cwm recovery but I get errors in Android and in the FASTBOOT USB mode.
In Android is says cannot find flash_image or something like that.
and in FASTBOOT it says error: cannot load 'recovery.img/
I unplugged my device and plugged it back in, rebooted it.
Do I have to have a 2.0 recovery FIRST? or can I just do 3.0 first? Is that even the problem?
I can't figure out what the problem is and I've read like 10 different threads from different forums as well.
Of course I'm perm rooted and I've installed Hboot.

For flash_image, you need to make sure you have the binary. There is a thread all about it. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902493)
For fastboot, is the recovery.img file located in whatever directory you are running the fastboot command from? What command are you running?

Do you have an ENG. Hboot? If not, you can not use fastboot, youll have to flash recovery from terminal using flash_image.
Edit: See in your first post says you have HBoot installed, you mean ENG. Hboot right?
If you do have ENG. Hboot type
Code:
fastboot devices
Do you get a "serial # fastboot" ?
See if you have the right drivers installed. I had ADB up and running but when I tried fastboot it would not recognize my G2 so I had to install new drivers.

Take the .img file that you have for CM 3 and rename it to: recovery.img then place it on your sdcard. Open terminal emulator on your phone and type in the following 3 commands, hitting enter after each one:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
reboot recovery
If you need a copy of the latest CM 3 (3.0.0.5) you can download it from here:

If you want to use flash_image, you need to place the binary on your phone and make it executable. The guide I linked to explains exactly what you are supposed to do.
For fastboot, do you have recovery.img in your tools directory?
I've got the same problem as the OP. How do i know if i have hboot? I have s off using the original visionary method. I try to push the image through termimal but it says the image isn't found. I need to do the entire binary method to get the path to work? this is why i want to wait for the update through rom manager, so i can flash back and forth anytime.

Not exactly sure what you are saying about pushing things through terminal and the binary method, but if you want to use flash_image, you should follow the guide I linked to.
If you want to use flashboot, you need to make sure you have the engineering hboot (if you boot you phone while holding volume down, the first line should say something like ENG S-OFF instead of SHIP S-OFF).
If you want yet another method to flash the recovery, there is also the sticky at the top of this forum.
i found this to be the best and easiest way to flash CWM recovery 3.0.0.5
I found a really easy way to flash the new recovery. My fastboot didnt seem to have an option for a terminal so I thought of this genius yet n00b way. Here are the steps.
Steps:
1. Install clockworkmod from market.
2. Flash Clockworkmod recovery from Rom Manager.
3. Navigate to clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries (or where ever your recovery was downloaded to. This can be done in File Manager, Astro, or Androzip.
4. Mine was "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img". Rename it to "recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-visionXXX.img" or something obviously different.
5. Download clockworkmod 3.0 from hereish:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893933
6. Move your recovery.img to clockworkmod/download/koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries and name it recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.3-vision.img
7. Go into ROM Manager and Flash Clockworkmod recovery, it will say its still 2.5.1.3 when your done. Reboot into recovery and you'll be welcomed by a new orange 3.0

I don't think that's true. Temp rooting with rage doesn't install any apps for you by itself (and the temp root to perm root guides only install Busybox, SuperUser, and the su binary). It's just that most people flash a custom rom after rooting, and many of those roms include flash_image. If you rooted and then stayed on stock for example though, you would have to get the flash_image program yourself (and it's something independent of the kernel).
hi...
can any1 tell me how to install custom roms using pc...........
i have searched the forum....but couldnt find any answer.................
sorry for starting a new thread........
thanks in advance
General Method:
- find, download and copy a flashable rom called "fullwipe 1.3" to the sd
- copy the zip with the rom you want to load in it to your sd card
- reboot into cwm recovery
- install zip from sd card
- choose the fullwipe 1.3 zip
- install
- then choose the rom's zip
- install
- reboot
wait for it to load. there you go.
For more advanced rom's, you must make directory's on your sd card for them to work properly. Follow instructions posted by the Rom's developer for proper installation.
thanks bro..........4 all ur help..............
1 more question........
what about using it through the fone......
i mean .....after downloading through the rom manager..........should i follow the same procedure ????
question
I rooted today, s-off & eng-off, installed rom manager
what do i have to do to get clockwork to work
I try booting into recovery but, display goes blank & has a red triangle symbol & after many minutes nothing happens..... can some inform me of the step I may have missed or something i can do to verify that i have the device set up properly.
Hopefully Thanks in advance.

I can appreciate that, but I need to know what to do. I try to do that & i get an error while attempting to run privileged commands. Flashing sounds all great but I cant seem to get it to do anything in recovery... error issues trying to do that, or anything else, I also have super user update issues that say they put a recovery image on the sd card & to go boot that from within recovery.
Just hoping to find out why i cant do the simple things everyone speaks of.

Well if you can't flash recovery from Rom Manager then there's something wrong with your root privileges or s-offs... Just to make things clear, how did you try to flash the recovery?
AT THE TOP OF THE BOOTLOADER IT MUST SAY "... ENG S-OFF RL" FOR THIS TO WORK
With the device connected, boot into bootloader and select FASTBOOT and press power once.
It will now show FASTBOOT USB, and give you 4 options.
Download the newest 4.x.x.x version of the cwm recovery from the dev section.
Download My Toolkit and Extract to C:\
In the recovery zip that you downloaded from the dev thread, find the "recovery.img" and extract it to the RESOURCE folder of my toolkit. (make sure its only the recovery.img and not the folders it sits in)
open up a command prompt (windows key + R, type "cmd" and hit enter)
type in: cd "C:\HTC ACE TOOLKIT\RESOURCE" and hit enter.
the prompt should now be in that directory.
now type in the following EXACTLY and press enter afterwards:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Let it flash, and badaboom, you have just flash cwm recovery.

well, in that toolkit i told you to download is a command script that does pretty much what I told you do to for the recovery.
Since you and I have the exact same phone I recommend grabbing the radio from the 2.52 korean build (Radio_12.59.60.26U_26.11.04.21_M), and the rill's as well.
Here is the radio and ril (first 2 links, download via the dropbox links): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996630
make sure you're in bootloader > fastboot and it says FASTBOOT USB on the screen
take a radio.img from within the zip and drop it into the resource folder and then run the shorcut in the toolkit.
It will now flash the radio to your phone and reboot.
Now with the rill's you flash via cwm recovery, from the RIL zip you downloaded, off your sd card in the same way you would flash a rom.

I would Like to thank you for your help & support, I was a the step of having fastboot usb And on my pc I unziped the radio And droped the image in the resource folder, a window pops up (disk burner) only option to choose is DVD R Drive.... do I have to have the SD card unmouted as a disk drive to the computer?
leave disk burner outta this. lol
The phone should be in bootloader under "fastboot" so the highlighted area will say FASTBOOT USB (since your phone is connected to your pc).
If radio.img is in the RESOURCE folder of my toolkit, go back to the main folder (HTC ACE TOOLKIT) and just double click the "Flash Radio" shorcut.

Changed Rom
Changed rom last night & wanted to know weather I should flash the "rill's" & "radio" each time I change roms. I just did the radio now so hope that cures the tinny sound, also it sounded kinda tinny just playing music, is there a patch or something else to do or is all that fixed in the radio?
Any suggestion on roms to try? using Revolution HD right now.
Just rooted my phone for the first time, and it went pretty smoothly until I tried to flash ClockworkMod. Nothing happens whenever I try to flash it from ROM Manager. I get a progress bar at the top for a second, then it disappears, and nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and can't think of anything else to do.
how did you root? if you used the wiki method you should already have cwm-recovery...
push power & volume - to enter bootloader and then choose the recovery option
if this doesn´t work, post your hboot number... you have s-off? (reason: if you flashed the eng hboot while rooting you can flash the cwm-recovery through fastboot)
command: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Go into Terminal Emulator and type "su." If it asks you if you want it to have root permissions, you have root.

I rooted following the wiki.
I'm trying to install roms through rom manager and when I hit download roms it says, "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing! Install the recovery through ROM Manager First"
Sorry, all of this still confuses me, this is my first time doing this. I don't know what Terminal Emulator is.
ok, i will try to help...
1. download a rom of your choice to pc
2. put it on your sdcard
3. enter recovery (turn the phone off, then press power & volume down - the bootloader will appear, choose the option recovery (volume up and down for moving and tp-wake to choose)
4. in recovery first wipe data & cache & dalvik cache
5. again in recovery choose install from sdcard and select your downloaded rom
6. reboot and have fun...
pls hit the thanks button

The ROM manager and ClockwordMod you have after rooting following the wiki is a VERY old version. It will say you do not have Clockword even if you do have it.
Things to try:
1. Install ROM manager from the market.
2. Reboot into recovery (turn off the phone, then hold down volume and power until you see the HBOOT, choose recovery). If you're in ClockwordMod (which you should) then you're fine.
3. Flash a new recovery through ADB (which what you should definitely learn how to do)
3a. download the newest version of ClockwordMod, copy the img file to the same folder as adb
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
3b. go to settings, make sure that you're in USB Debugging Mode
3c. now, just to make sure you won't brick your phone, turn off the phone, hold down volume and power. If you see the FASTBOOT USB, you're good to go.
3d. open cmd in your computer
3e. type in "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
in which recovery.img is the recovery image you just downloaded. If you download it from the website I pointed, the command will be
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-vision.img
Now you have the latest recovery. Go to recovery in the HBOOT menu to see the result, enjoy!
Terminal emulator: It will be one of the apps in your apps drawer, named "Terminal Emulator". May or may not be there depends on what ROM you're running.
Check for root using cmd: using command "adb shell", you should see
adb server us out of date, killing...
*daemon started successfully*
[email protected]:/#
Installing ROM: please try not to use ROM Manager, learn how to do it in Recovery at least. Because if you cannot boot to your ROM, runs ROM manager then you're stuck when something wrong happens (which is quite usual if you're flashing). Best way is to copy the ROM to your SD card, reboot to recovery, choose "Install from zip" then pick the zip file of the ROM. (remember to wipe data/cache and dalvik cache in the advanced menu)
Hope that helps!
Edited: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager is down for the moment. I attached the newest G2 recovery img for you. Use either of them. Touch is more advance (and more confusing).
Disregard. Kyra was faster.

Hello everyone.
In this thread I intend to help people out with a problem identical to or similar to what I mentioned in the title.
If you have for example recovery installed or some files on your sdcard, you can either skip a few steps or restart completely. If you at any point need further assistance, feel free to post (I am not an expert though, I'm just sharing the knowledge I have used to help people out in the past. If I can't help you, I'm sure others can.)
However, this thread assumes you have fastboot and the like in a folder such as C:\android as you would have needed that to unlock the bootloader. Don't fret if you don't, just post and I or others will try to help.
NOTE: In this tutorial I replace the names of files with other words to save writing down every possible file name in existence. Don't type for example blobby.img, type the name of your recovery file that you have downloaded.
STEP 1: Obtain and store clockwork mod recovery touch.
The latest file can be found here if you scroll down to One X (GSM). I recommend you choose this one:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Or if you want the latest one at the time of writing:
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img
Once you have downloaded the file, place it into your folder with fastboot in.
STEP 2: Flash recovery.
First, go to the bootloader on your phone. Highlight and select fastboot.
Then, open comnand promot on your pc.
If you haven't already, plug your phone into the pc.
Now, use the cd command to select your fastboot folder in command prompt. For example, if your folder is C:\android, type:
cd c:\android
Then press enter.
Now to flash the recovery. In this part, the word blobby replaces the recovery file you just downloaded. Type into command prompt:
Fastboot flash recovery blobby.img
Then press enter.
STEP 3: Download ROM, Super wipe and Kernel.
For this I recommend Android Revolution HD as it is in my opinion the fastest and most stable ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562603
Scroll down to the downloads section and download the ROM itself, the boot. img and the superwipe.zip
Once you have downloaded these, place the ROM and Superwipe in your fastboot folder. Extract the boot zip to a new folder within the android folder.
STEP 4: Put ROM files in your sdcard.
In this next part, blobby means exactly the same as before, rommy means the name of the ROM file you downloaded and wipey means the Superwipe zip.
Go into fastboot on your phone. Open command prompt on the pc and used again to go to your fastboot folder. Type:
Fastboot boot blobby.img
Once in recovery, go to a section called something like mounts and file storage, it's the one with all the mounting and unmounting etc. (Correction needed)
Mount everything, stay in recovery and type in command prompt.
adb push rommy.zip /sdcard
Then
adb push wipey.zip /sdcard
After this is done, return to fastboot for the next step.
STEP 5: Flashing boot image.
Go to the folder you made when extracting the zip before. There should be an executable called something like flash boot. (Correction needed). Open it and follow the instructions.
Once done, go to recovery.
STEP 6: Install ROM.
In recovery, select Install Zip from Sdcard.
Go down until you find the Superwipe zip. Select it.
Do the same for the ROM zip.
Whilst installing the ROM, you will be asked for many settings. I recommend you leave most of them as default, only change what you know changes.
STEP 7: Reboot
Reboot your phone and wait a while. If it starts up, SUCESS. If you still have a problem, post here with more info. Be patient on the first boot, it always takes a while.
I hope this thread has helped you. I am open for all comments good or bad.
Thanks,
ORStoner

Would it not be less hassle to just relock and run an RUU?

I guess you are on a stock rooted rom?
Seems the version provided in the thread was incompatible with the stock rom version your are currently on:
A few solutions:
1. Search a custom rom in the development threads and flash it, choose an ICS rom though if its a sense rom..flashing a jellybean rom is a bit more advanced and isnt suggested for beginners.
2. If you know which stock rom your are using (1.28, 1.29 or 2.17) you can search for a corresponding rom and push/flash just the android.policy.jar from it back to yoru device - thats the file taht got overwritten when you flashed the 3dot removal zip.
3. If you got a nandroid backup, just revert to your backup in recovery.
...there are a few other solutions, which requires relocking your bootloader etc.
IF your are already rooted I would suggest to flash a custom rom, this is the easiest way to get your oen x back to live and running a custom rom can bring a lot of advantages: better battery life, smoother UI and a lot of stuff that enhances the user experience on the One X.
Cheers, Jan
Restore a nandroid from before you flashed the mod. Or find your relevant ruu, relock your bootloader and run the ruu from your pc

Accessing sd card even if device does not boot is still possible, using adb in recovery mode.
If You have cwm recovery flashed, just boot into recovery, if you dont flash revocery and boot into it.
If You are unable to flash recovery do direct boot into recovery as follows:
You need fastboot binaries and recovery image
1. reboot device into fastboot
2. open command window ( cmd, bash, whatever )
3. use this command "fastboot.exe boot recovery.img" where recovery.img is filename for recovery image
4. You device should be now in recovery mode.
Now, for the magic
You need adb binaries.
1. open command window
2. type "adb devices" this should show device id confirming adb's ability to communicate with device
3. using recovery on the phone mount sdcard
assuming You use clockworkmod recovery:
3.1. select "mounts and storage"
3.2. select "mount /sdcard", if successfull, this entry will change into "umount /scard", dont select it again, leave Your phone on the desk and proceed
4. to copy files to device sdcard, use command window You opened previously,
5. type "adb push FILE_NAME.ZIP /sdcard/FILE_NAME.ZIP" where filename is rom zip or any other file You want to copy.
6. depending on file size, this may take some time, and it will seem line nothing is happening, just let it run for couple of minutes.
7. go back to You device.
8. select "umount /sdcard"
9. select "+++Go Back+++"
10. flash you rom from copied file if You need.

3.2. select "mount /sdcard", if successfull, this entry will change into "umount /scard", dont select it again, leave Your phone on the desk and proceed
4. to copy files to device sdcard, use command window You opened previously,
5. type "adb push FILE_NAME.ZIP /sdcard/FILE_NAME.ZIP" where filename is rom zip or any other file You want to copy.
6. depending on file size, this may take some time, and it will seem line nothing is happening, just let it run for couple of minutes.
7. go back to You device.
8. select "umount /sdcard"
9. select "+++Go Back+++"
10. flash you rom from copied file if You need.

Hi there, I am trying to follow these instructions but when i type adb devices I dont get a device listed at all, please help as I flashed the boot.img right before I was about to install a new rom but the rom had errors and so the installation was aborted and now im stuck in an eternal boot loop.
please help!
ADB commands only work in recovery or when you're booted in Android (not possible in your case). What you need to do is put your phone in fastboot mode and get into recovery from there (plenty of info on how to do that available on these forums).
Once you're in recovery mode ADB devices list should show your device and then follow the rest of those instructions.
If you can't get into fastboot from your bootloop force phone off by holding power button for 5 second, then once off hold volume down only and phone should boot in fastboot
