I am proud owner of SE xperia arc and updated to 2.3.4. with latest 4.0.2.A.0.42 build. I have few queries regarding unlocking bootloader and rooting the device.
1) I understand what is unloking bootloader, by instruction given by SE officials. I want to confirm that will i be still able to update with SE Companion for any new release they offer after going for unlock?
2) I have seen many thread confirming rooting of arc with custom ROM. Is there any specific thread/link where i can find SE custom ROM with same features offered by original ROM?
3) Will the features differ in custom ROM from original one?
The reason i want do rooting is just want to get rid of useless apps installed by SE itself and to get more RAM free for my other frequent apps.
I do understand these things are answered here and there by i need a consolidated one.

1. No, you will not be able to recive new updates from sony ericsson (un less you relock your bootloader and flash it to stock ROM)
2. The best one is cyanogenMOD

More CUSTOM ROMS

3. CyanogenMOD and every other customROM have more features than original (some are kicked out, some are added to it, by the will of maker)
P.S.
For rooting you dosent need to UNLOCK BOOTLOADER, you just need to ROOT it..
Unlocking bootloader remove your warranty..dont unlock it if you dont wanna custom ROM on your phone...

Hi,
I'm a new Xperia Arc S user, this is my first android phone as well (previously - WP7 on Samsung Focus, unlocked it and installed custom roms there - im experienced)
Got this phone since a couple of days now, it's running android 2.3.4, as ICS update is not available in my country yet. The phone came with PlusGSM branding, although can't tell the difference to stock android because I never had one.
I installed couple of apps, did some updates from android market and now I have like 44MB free only. Anyway now I'm wondering what to do next? Do you recommend anything in particular, like flashing to ICS, rooting, wait for official ICS update, etc?
Gonna read some guides like "Ultimate v1.0 Newbie's Guide For Arc / Arc S User" meantime
Wrong forum for question look at Q&A Section

Oh sorry for that, could a moderator move my thread there?
ps. I'm just upgrading to official ICS via PC Companion, it poped up 1h ago...
I heard that there is no valid method of unlocking bootloader on Xperia Arc S without loosing DRM's. So I would like skip this part and try some custom roms that doesnt require to have it unlocked. Could you recommend any particular custom ICS roms ?
Hey, I am using my xperia arc. And I would like to have my UI look like ICS, but still stay on Ginger Bread since it is more stable according to the official Sony website. I currently have the .62 software, Android 2.3.4, boot loader unlocked and I have no idea what I should do after my boot loader's unlocked. Moreover, I have the flash tool software, but I don't get what would happen if I flash some software (i.e the global generic software from Sony). And I would like to have a tutorial on how to get my phone look like ICS. So if you guys can help me out it would be great cheers.
*Please also show me the download link and the phone is not ROOTED.
Please do a little search in the ARC Theme section. Everything is there. And your phone must be rooted to use any UI MOD.
For rooting instructions check the ARC General section. The procedures threads are in top. All are sticky.

Hi all, I have a arc s with locked bootloader but sim unlocked (by IMEI code) and I can't unlock it (unless I pay for it, and I don't want to pay...)
I want to know if I can flash another rom without unlock bootloader and if the answer is yes, what roms can I flash and how.. Because im new on sony ericsson devices.
Im on last version for arc s(4.0.4) without root access.
I new to know:
- how I can flash a rom with locked bootloader
- What roms are the best to flash ( if possible, 4.1.2 or 4.2 versions... )
- how to do all this things...
Thanks a lot !!

Hello Xda People.
I have recently got myself an Xperia S.
Before this I've owned an xpera x8 I loved playing around with roms on that thing yet I never really unlocked the bootloader or anything fancy
So now I have a few questions. What is the smart thing to do?
Unlock the bootloader?
Root the phone and only uninstall unneeded things?
Install a rom without unlocked bootloader
or Instal a rom with unlocked bootloader
The things I would really like are:
A little bit more battery life
The same option the phone has with official rom (xsound/ bravia engine in particular)
Pre-rooted rom
Could anyone here help me make a choice and guide me through the steps I need to take?
Yup u can start by rooting your phone there is lots of threds here after that u can install custom recovey where u dont need to unlock your bootloader after that flash a Rom with a good battry life (like miui) there us few roms compatible with locked bootloader.
I do not recommend to unlock or root ur phone now bcz after few weeks we ll have official jb 4.1.2 after that if ur still board thn u can unlock ur phone and start messing around
Hit thanks if I helped
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
Lock/Unlock Bootloader depends on what ROM you choose to install. There are plenty ROMs available in the development section. Read the ROM threads, Features, User reviews and decide your self which ROM suits you best.
Based on that You can decide whether to go for Unlock Bootloader or Stay on Locked bootloader.
If you like to stay on Stock then just root it and remove bloatwares and install few tweaks. It should be fine. Detail info regarding this can be found in General Section. So search there.
And last but not the least, XDA Doesn't allow discussions about "which ROM is best" or "which ROM suits me most"? Thus the easy way is to head over to the development section and find out by yourself.
OP please read the Post above mine...Thanks.
After 1 year I'm coming back to Android scene from Windows phone 8.
I want to clarify a few things.
The model I got (6506) is a Bell Canada phone which from my understanding doesn't support the bootloader unlock. What are the limitations of not having a unlocked bootloader. It looks like I can still root it and install CWM and flash a few custom roms. Essentially the only thing a unlocked bootloader would provide is me going to 4.4 now as I could run a custom kernel correct? I dont care about overclocking my phone so the kernels aren't really of any interest but its always nice going to 4.4 before sony releases it. Will there be custom roms available for my phone based on 4.4 once its out? Also will a vanilla (CMS) style rom be possible on 4.4 once sony officially releases it for this device or will that still require a custom kernel (unlocked bootloader).
Lastly is there a way to carrier unlock this via a application or something outside of paying $20 on the websites for a code?
Sorry for all the questions and greatly appreciate your feedback. I went with the C6506 for not only the price but also because it wills upport AT&T LTE bands here in the US.
Thanks!

you cannot flash custom roms like cyanogenmod etc some stock based roms root and cwm is all what u can get,any rom which requires u to change kernel vl not work .There must be a way to unlock it unofficially on xda but according to me to me i dont think paying 20$ is some kind of worth (this is my opinion if u still want to do it then first make sure that it vl not be some sort of fake).
sony zl 6506 bootloader

Sony zl user.
I have the same model with bell. Unlocking carrier will be no less than the $20 you found. Also bootloader can be set to yes, but if you are not concerned with overclocking I wouldn't suggest worrying about the bootloader. Also once there will not be anyway to go to 4.4 until the official rom is released and then ftf decrypted...give it some time and u will be able to update with root still available.
