Hello!
Please tell me which games are there which I can't play on ARC while I can on PLAY?
Please name such games if you can.
I am about to buy any one of these tommorrow, and don't know which to prefer; here is a little comparison, please correct me if I am wrong and also mention something I might have missed;
ARC :
Great body design
Great body material
Great Camera
Poor sound
No gaming Pad
Larger Screen
Not so good Web experience
Not so good Touch Interface
Radio
PLAY :
Average body design
Poor body material
Average Camera
Great sound
Gaming Pad
Average Screen
Great Web Experience
Great Touch experience
No Radio
Also tell me is there any difference between them as far as the user experience is concerned, I mean any application or function or anything that ARC has and Play don't or vice versa?
How much do they differ as far as the browsing experience is concerned?
So far Arc is winning, I guess, but now it all depends upon the games. That's is why I am contacting you all. I mean I am interested in Star Battalion and Asphalt (which from what I know can be played on ARC), and not much interested in Crash Bandicot.
Please reply soon.
Thanks in advance.
Can you tell me why you think the play has better web experience then the arc I think the specs of the same are they not ?

Hello!
I don't know really.
I guess I got the impression from the fact that SE's official site says that PLAY is a great web experience on top of great gaming experience. And also from a video which showcased some downsides of ARC's browser versus that of IPhone 4 but couldn't find any video doing the same for PLAY.
I have to Disagree on some of your Points there on Arc
Poor sound
Click to collapse
You must not say POOR in General because for a Single Loud Speaker Arc Speaker is One of the Best out there, Dont' compare Single to Stereo Speaker, but Yes Xperia Play's Speaker is The Best Speakers on Mobile Phone out there.
Not so good Web experience
Click to collapse
Of course Bigger screen means Better Web Experience IMHO, I don't see why Arc will not do better than Play?
Not so good Touch Interface

All Xperia right now have The Same Excellent Touch Interface, but Most Xperia's out there are Applied with Shatter Proof Sheet on a Mineral Glass that protects the screen, that could slightly decreases Touch Performance
IMO Both Phones are Great except they are focused on Different markets
Arc as the Camera/Video Stylish Phone and Play as the Gaming Phone Equipped with Superb PS controls and LOUD Stereo Speakers
but overall Experience is Great

I think you forget to mention that play does not support Brave Engine and i think both device has pretty good sound too. Just get to the store and try it.
Hey lol im facing the exact same crisis! I've kinda decided on the arc. Some of your points are not true mate. The arc web browsing is better. What the play has that the arc doesn't are the dedicated gaming controls and stereo speakers. By no means are the arc speakers bad. Don't pay much attention to the SE website.. they promote their phones as much as they can. For the xperia x8 they say access to thousands of apps on the market. That doesn't mean the androids don't lol. Arc has a brilliant camera, based on personal usage better than the N8 I don't know how.. 12mp vs 8 and even the owner of the N8 reluctantly admitted the arc camera was better. Arc has the exmor sensor and BRAVIA engine while play has no sensor, but has a BRAVIA port. Doesn't Work that great imho. Very little difference. Also keep in mind though that in bright light, bravia might not be good. It overdoes things sometimes and you can't turn it off. I'd love some feedback to this thread from arc owners, IV already got some from play owners. I think I'm gonna go with the arc cos I'm not a hardcore gamer and the arc screen is big enough to support touch controls on normal android games. Fpse can be a problem but I doubt I'll ever use it. Also, I doubt the play can support ps2 and psp games.. so I'm reluctant to get one. There may or may not be any exclusive games being released for it.. would be a HUGE disappointment to play owners. When it comes to custom roms and kernels, it appears the play has a bit more support I assume.. this is just my 2 cents.. would value other opinions very much.
Edit- arc touch interface is awesome. It's bloody brilliant. And it can detect more that 2 fingers simultaneously. Only negative point I have about the arc- in SOME models, hairline cracks appear in the housing. Just google it. It's quite rare.. and you won't notice it in most cases. If this doesn't bother you, it's fine. It doesn't affect performance or anything at all. It wouldn't bother me.. I wouldn't even notice lol. Yea.. thats my 2 cents.
price is a constant too, the arc is cheaper

Hmmm.... are you satisfied with your arc? Any main advantages/disadvantages?
About price - the arc came out at a significantly increased price when compared to the play. However, prices around now are the same. (In my country at least)

No problem. Actually I also had my dilema choosing Arc or Play these were the phones available at that time when i was going to replace my X8, I read a lot about these phones, and their price is almost the same $520 Arc and $525 Play, but i bought the Arc instead with lots of personal preferences, and yes I play a lot.
Yes I am very pleased with my Arc, not just by the looks of it, Performance is great and par on most dualcore phones out there.
Drawbacks? Cracks appearing and chrome peeling that will show around 2 to 3 months, cracks can be serious issue to most people, it hit hard on Midnight Blue version, and rare on Misty Silver, and I chose Misty Silver because of that.
IMO Chrome peeling is not new to us, i Also had some Chrome peeling in my Previous phone.
My Arc was up for 267Hrs before i encountered a random Reboot, I think that's Normal

Hmmm... I want to buy the midnight blue.. Silver doesnt look that great but the cracks are a problem.... Guess ill decide that when I go to buy it..
Do you regret not buying the Play? Or would you choose the arc over the play again? Also, what games do you play? HD? And are they completely lagless?

Oh yea you should replace that X8, too bad X8 was a great contender last year for Mid Range phones, but they didn't supported it well and it's like a Dead on Arrival Phone
Here is my Personal Youtube Channel
It Includes Unboxing, Quick Review(No voice though, Im Shy ) and lots of GAMES! Please Rate and Share too
I only encounter Lags when playing Asphalt 6, maybe because this game is not for Arc, and because this game is for Xperia Play Optimised, but still playable and it rarely lags.
If i could own Both that would be nice
Hmm.. Have you overclocked? Or it lags a little on stock rom with 1Ghz default clock

No, I stayed on Stock Rom 2.3.3 and No Root , Still waiting for a Rootable 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 when time comes
Xperia Play Handles Games and Task very well because it is the only phone out there that uses a dual channel DDR2 memory working at 300 Hertz, that Improves Performances a lot and can perform Heavy Task.
Thats why Playing games on Play is Optimised and stayed @ 60FPS Refresh Rate.
One Very Big Pro for Xplay

The play has bravia engine since doomlord ported it
IMO the Play and the Arc are both excellent devices. But they are aimed at two totally diffrent markets. The Play has been heavly optimised for playing games. (stereo speakers, dual channel ddr2 memory). But unless you intend to play alot of games on your phone, i see no reason to buy a play over an Arc. I love playing games on my play. And could never go back to touchscreen games now
If you want to game a lot --> Play is for you because of the controla
If you want to use it as a normal smartphone, texting, browsing, gaming sometimes Arc is the way to go imo.
I don't regret getting my Arc and it's fast @ 1GHz but of course it's even snappier @ 1.2GHz
Mine midnight blue Arc has the crack but it's not that visable (most of my friends don't see it, even if you say them there's a crack).
Arc rocks, but both devices are great.
Day to day performance should be exactly the same on Arc and Play due same specs and same using experience.

Actually I Play a lot but I did chose Arc over Play because of these Factors
>Size
>Weight
>Screen Size
>Screen Brightness
>Clear Black Panel
>Bravia Engine
>8MP Exmor R
>HD Recording
>HDMI Port(Bonus for Me)
>Style
Over
>PS Controls with Touch pads
>Stereo Speakers
>Exclusive Games and PS Suite
>Dual DDR2 Memory Channel
>Front Facing Camera
Put Those Arc Features in Play, I will choose Play Anytime
They could easily put some of those features and make Play as their Flagship phone?
Just Imagine All those Arc Features(not the Size and Weight) in Play
Those of you who have the play- (AndroHero I think)
Will the play be able to support PSP and PS2 games? Its my biggest concern about the Play. I saw a video on youtube - Modern warfare for xperia play. I know it was fake but the graphics :O:O:O:O:O:O Will the play ever actually be able to do that? Or will there most probably be a play 2 that will..?
My conclusion (so far) - The Play's gaming controls make it an ultimate portable gaming experience and you can thrash other players in online/multiplayer FPS games. The DDR2 RAM eliminates the lags that you very very rarely see on an xperia arc. And you get a tiny not-very-good front camera that Ill never use. The games can be played on both devices extremely well. Day to day performance is the same.
So...
Camera (really awesome cam) vs gaming controls.
Great.. Im exactly where I started out :/
Thanks all for the help More opinions always welcome. Im begging for them actually... It'll be my first high end android and I dont want to regret buying it or later thinking damn I should have bought the <insert name of what I didnt buy>
Edit- how is the support for the 2 devices when it comes to custom roms, kernels, etc?
Ive searched the forums for both, theres one note-worthy kernel (doom), one FXP rom each and the play has 2 or 3 others. Are roms for the arc in progress? Or is the stock rom brilliant as it is? Sorry for the *noob* questions. But Ive done the searching and researching and I want confirmation and stuffs I didnt know. New to the forums here etc etc
is this phone any good? how does it fare up against the iphone 4?
Android can do everything the iPhone 4 can't do, and the Xperia play has a larger screen, Gamepad, and what not?
thanks but i would prefer a more in-depth answer as to why and also if its a good phone or not (and why). thanks

Well I have a video review,
...a "How is it after 2 months?" session to see if it's quality stays consistent,
...as well as a COMPLETE written review.
http://verytechnical.wordpress.com/2011/11/19/sony-ericsson-xperia-play-4g-review/
That in-depth enough for ya?
EDIT: Long story short, you can find a handheld gaming system that handles tactile, portable gaming nicely, but they always fall short for... pretty much all of those non-game functions users over 14 need. You can find a lot of smartphones that handle all those necessities, but the touch controls are horrid, and every other physical controller option violates the "fearsome foursome" of external controller flaws; including that none of them aside from the Xperia PLAY have a lot of compatible games - SixAxis, ZeeMote, iControlPad, Gametel, BGP100...
...all of them fall flat on their ass when you start looking for something more than old emulated stuff. Xperia PLAY kicks ass as an emulator, but it's the only truly versatile smartphone with physical controls with the matching support of over 200 non-emulated games. There's no other device on the market that can hold the claim that well.
This is all from someone who came from 4th Gen idevices BTW. In comparison, its beat iOS at everything from media to games
Okay hardware wise they're almost the same.
1ghz CPU
512mb ram
5mp camera.
Adreno205 gpu to the sgx535
Apps will run similarly.
Okay better with iPhone :
The gorgeous hi res retina screen.
The app store
Smooth ui
Availability of apps.
Music, even though people might say otherwise.
Internal space.
Gyroscope
Better with xplay:
4 inch screen.
The ps controls
The exclusive apps
The Dlna
The PRICE
Audio feedback (xloud)
Image quality (with bravia engine )
The modding possibilities
WiFi hotspot (tethering)
A good forum
Price of apps.
Upgradeable memory (up to god knows how much with sdxc) lets say 64
Common peripherals ,ie Micro USB. So they're cheap if you misplace your charger etc.
Upcoming ics upgrade .
Upcoming PlayStation suite .
Current ps1 games .
Emulator possibilities.
Both are very good devices but unless if you were like me, a gamer, go for the iPhone .
The bads:
IPhone :
Heavily overpriced.
Not very revolutionary .
Overhyped apple product.(internals are the same as 3gs )
Relatively heavy.
Overshadowed by 4s .(last year's product)
Xplay:
Depreciation (not if you bought for like a £100)
Android ui (sorry guys spoilt by windows phone xD)
Weight 169 grams (if you're not a gamer you don't need this weight)
Lacklustre( maybe a bit overhyped too - so far but the upcoming months look really good imho)
But I still love my xplay, as I loved my omnia 7. May I recommend the ray if youre not into gaming and would like a good device .
My gf has a 4s and honestly, if you're gonna buy a new iPhone 4 save a bit more and buy the 4s instead .
Hope that helped.
Cheers
from tapatalk on xperia play.
Since buying an Xperia PLAY a couple of months ago, my old iPhone 4 hasn't seen the light of day and has been hiding in my draw since.
When I hold and use my PLAY, I know I'm holding a phone that was made especially for me. It's got:
- A nicely sized screen.
- Probably the best pair of speakers I've ever seen on a phone.
- Good battery life if treated well.
- That "WOW!" factor.
- 720p recording now.
- Great emulation performance.
- Can play pretty much all PS1 games using the likes of psxperia, FPSE and psx4droid.
- A large number of exclusive games.
- Is moddable and is a dream to run after rooting device.
I won't be buying another phone from here on unless it's a Sony gaming device running on Android.
I just love it when family come over in the holidays rocking up with their iPhone 4 and 4S thinking they have the best phone on the market. While they're talking to Siri asking for the weather, I'm having good fun playing Crash Bash with psxperia with a real game pad and at full speed.

The iPhone whether 4 or 3 or 6 is garbage , CNET and other hi-tech media mention it , IOS is the less customizable less user friendly .... I could go on. Best to actually compare it to a droid razr or galaxy s2 than any iPhone lol.

Have you tried out Launcher7 on the XPlay... Gives you that WP7 look and feel (at least for the launcher)... Ubermusic gives you a zune-style music player...
The biggest draw of any Android device over any of the other major platforms is customization. If you put the time and energy into it you can make Android do anything you want it to.
Plus this phone can take a bit of a drop and still be good the i phone will just shatter

thanks for all the help guys! i would like a good phone but also be able to play games as well (maybe not extensively but i imagine i would use the pad a lot) would you say this is the phone for me or should i get another phone but stick to touchscreen controls? reviews are quite varied, some say its great and others say thats its great only for gaming? could anyone clarify briefly please?
*at the time of posting i have not watched nor read the reviews posted by "TLRtheory" so please excuse me if this was mentioned in one of them*
I recently got an iphone to try since i hear these things organize peoples lives, then got sick of it after i jailbroke it, being on android all these years i felt it was inconvenient just to make ringtones, text tones and with its limited format, then i found out im stuck with that square front page so i gave it to my brother.
then i brought a play, i played it for a few days then placed a listing online to sell it, then pulled out a few days after because i would waste more money getting something better like a Samsung s2
this phone is great it gets used alot more than any cellphone i had, while im waiting around or in public i can just burn some time and play.
At first it wasn't a great phone but then got root uninstaller to disable alot of the services i dont need.
the controls really make this phone worth it, i had sold my psp and missed all those old games, touchscreen controls never went far for me, i couldn't imagine clocking castlevania or many nes roms with it.
There is only one thing this phone can do better than any other: playing games. If you don't see yourself doing that often, you're better off with other options. Buying a Xperia Play is like crossing the Rubicon, as it makes a statement about yourself.
It depends, men are from android and women are from ios.
Well I will be playing games often but I just want to know if it is a good overall PHONE regardless of gaming. I currently have the ZTE blade so maybe that will tell you something..
Sent from my Blade using XDA App
As an overall phone, it's just as good as a Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire S or any mid high end Android device: very fluid movement of the UI, so-so camera... It will be a fairly substantial improvement from the Blade, though that's a fantastic device btw. As a phone, it's bulky, but it has a remarkably good external speaker for music, packs a decent battery and the screen has a nice resolution (higher dpi than the blade).
I came from the Blade and find the Play super. Only cost me €7 more then the Blade too. Its a great phone if you can get it cheap.

Hi Guyz,
I have come down to 2 phones .
My budget is 23k max .
1> SE Xperia Play
2> Galaxy R
I will be using the phone for atleast 2.5yrs until my graduation is over . This is my last investment on a phone
According to hardware specs its an obvious answer = Galaxy R
But the psp controls and the looks is pulling me towards Xperia Play .
So , Guyz plz I ask for your suggestions and thoughts .
Any other inputs regarding other mobile in that range will also help
Thanks in advance ,

If you mentioned the currency you use you would probably get better answers...
Well you said it yourself. The Xperia PLAY isn't as powerful, but it has a gamepad. The Galaxy R is slightly more powerful, but has no gamepad. It's up to you as to which suits you better. Personally, I think the Xperia PLAY is plenty powerful, and I love the physical gamepad. The PLAY is a bit thicker too, but that's to be expected because of its slide-out pad. If you simply want a phone that can do some other things on the side, don't get the PLAY. If you want a phone that can also easily play games, get the PLAY.
Emulators bro and old school fighting games and possibly newer ones . When you look into the android market it's like 90% games optimized for xperia play. Where do you see Galaxy R ? But that was a duche baggy marketing line.
If you Galaxy R you;'ll have a better screen, a better build quality, a better hardware set ( a bit more future proof) but you will never have the retro gaming experience the Xperia play has. Also many new games are being optimized for the play so you won't have problems for a while playing new games
Neither Xperia play nor Galaxy R
Wait for XPERIA PLAY 2
the xperia play is a good phone for emulators, gba roms etc. im planning to keep my play for a long time as i sold my psp and the let down of the sony vita.
if you just want a phone buy a average phone, if you want to play games get a play, the samsung looks great but you dont need all that hardware unless your playing games but then you lack a controller, gta3 is great on a play, abit of lag but its better than using the touch screen controls,i couldnt imagine clocking castlevania or many of my nes games with touchscreen.
23,000 Rupees indictates that the Play has not had a price reduction in India like it did in Europe. The Galaxy R is the better phone by and large, and I'd take it over the Play.
The controls are nice on the Play, shame emulators dont really support the touchpads.

£150 from o2
Just a question that came up in rom threads. To get more insight into things. How many of use really use the xperia play for its gaming ability. Meaning, you REALLY want the gamepad used correctly. Some people use just the touch screen more and dont care about the gamepad as much. So just thought I would make a poll for devs to use later to get insight on how people use their xperia.
The gamepad is the only reason I chose this phone over the other Android phones offered by Verizon. And so far, it hasn't let me down. Of course, I'm a retro gamer, I couldn't really care less about the touchpads.
I use it often. At the mo playing Zelda on the Gameboy Advance emulator and loving it
brought to you by the XDA app on my badass Android toy
I use it for every emulator , every game. The gamepad is the sole purpose of buying this phone.
Yea I am all about the emulators myself. However I think the issue comes up on non stock roms with android based games that "optimize for xperia play" and how some roms may not work right on a gamepad. I just know I love the gamepad. Too bad GTA3 isnt working right.
YES... i had been hunting down this phone since i heard rumors of it, 2 years before its release, so i started to save up cash, i waited a while for it to drop price, when i finally had enough money , i got the white one, because everyone here would have the black one, anyways as soon as i got the phone the works, Boot loader on locking, Rooting, Custom Rom, Emulators/ROMS, im an old school gamer, so all the Pokemons, all the Marios, etc etc.
What i loved about the phone is that my younger brother got a Iphone 3gs and he did not wanted to buy the Xperia Play because " it looks so cheap" and to be honest it does, it took him 30 seconds of playing my Play to Regret getting the Iphone 3gs, as like me he is also a hardcore gamer.
So Gaming pad.. hell Freaking yeah... its the only thing i can bark at work,"hey my phone has this much processor","mine has this much screen", etc then i go "well how many of you have gaming buttons?" and i just laugh.
My last two phones I had purchased the GameGripper for both. Bit when I saw the xplay I jumped for it and haven't looked back. Now version where the hell is the info on the ics update?

The gamepad is great for playing fighting games
The gamepad is one mayor thing that brought me to buy the phone.
As I consider myself a hardcore and casually retro gamer.
Many other reasons:
Decent screen size
Incredibly loud stereo speakers
Supports epileptic led mode (32hz/2000bpm)
Autofocus camera
Awesome processor and GPU (overclockeable to 2GHz!!!1!11one)
512 MBs of RAM
Easy rooting and bootloader unlocking
Comes with the best OS in the world
Built-in integration with Facebook
Some drawbacks:
SEMC skin kinda sucks compared to cooler ones
Comes with lots of bloatware
Brightness is NULL in the outsides of a sunny day
Battery does not last more than three days under default settings
SEMC launcher only has 5 homescreen slots
Built-in theme chooser doesn't do much
Front camera only works in outsides and is a 1.3 MP one
But overall, much better phone than any of those I have found people using on the streets (at least in my country).
I mainly use the phone with Onlive. Ever since it got support I've been wasting my money on games my computer can handle, but it's on my phone <3.
Emulators work rather well, it's just say I'm playing Majora's Mask I have to keep the virtual keys on screen for the c-buttons due to lack of mapping.
I just don't use the touchpads

I use my Xperia Play only as a gaming device. I don't use it as a phone (no sim card). I got it used super cheap. Onlive, FPse, etc.

of course...bought it because of the game pad..i have a lot of time to play games...even at work...
i don't use the touchpad because i haven't game where i need it (only in mupen64 i need them, but i'm not an hardcore player)
Do some of you still use a BT Gamepad on your XP? Was thinking of getting the onlive universal gamepad. Still having a full set of trigger buttons would be nice.
I thougt the game pad was cool but i actully don't use it so much and actully have another android phone.
That's the main reason I got it and it's great for my retro gaming needs. I use emulators mainly and only use the pads when I need to, like with Mupen64.
I can say I'm a little disappointed in the r800x model (stupid Verizon). My parents still pay my phone bill so I can't complain too much.
I'm moving to Canada this summer and I plan on getting one from whatever carrier I end up with (not CDMA though, I'm done with that mess). They are free with most contracts which makes it even tastier.
BTW any recommendations for cell carriers in Canada? PM me
I'm mobile.. and I'm a gamer.. so, I bought Xplay because it's a Gaming Mobile Phone which had "gamepad" on it..
If I don't use the gamepad, I would prefer Arc S or Ray than this..
Hey guys, quick question!
Sony Ericsson MW600 Wireless Headset is on SALE here in the Philippines for 10 days. I just want to ask a few questions with you people who have tried it with the Xperia PLAY.
1. Does the MW600 work fine with the Xperia PLAY?
2. Does it have disconnection problems? I mean, does it disconnect often?
3. How's its battery life?
4. How does it affect Xperia PLAY's battery life with the Bluetooth turned on?
5. How's the sound quality? Is it the same with the stock headset?
6. Besides using it as headset for calling and listening to music, can it also be used when playing a game?
Thanks in advance!
PS, don't post if you're just going to recommend Smart Wireless Headset Pro. It sucks according to reviews.
Anyone?
Only thing I can say is my friend has one I believe and it sounds very good. Granted he has custom rom and edited dspmanager but I'd say it is worth it. Go get it before it sells out!

To my knowledge it can be used for games.. it doesn't disconnect once synced.. I just always recommend a sound manager to maximize value of headset. And it has decent range.

Thanks @MGSBigBoss for the reply!
I just found a better deal: Sony Ericsson Business Pack with MW600 Wireless Headset. I'm going to get that. Thanks again!
